Dear Reader,

The year has started at a pace.

The ‘On The Run’ complex is completed and apparently

doing a roaring trade.

Transport SA have released their plans for the Malpas Road to Port Road section of South Road.

ABRA responded to Council’s Road Network Plan, pointing

out the failure to follow their own guidelines. Using Aldinga Beach and Quinliven Roads as examples, both

are categorised as secondary arterial roads on traffic use

counts, but neither have been built to sustain the 60 - 80 kph recommended for this class of roads in urban areas. Traffic

flow restrictions built in to the design of both these roads

were pointed out in detail in our submission.

We also recommended that this opportunity be taken up to build future footpaths away from the kerb in local streets, as

it is in all other categories of road, by adding that to the local

streets recommendations. That way driveway inverts are less likely to create the BMX track conditions some of our

footpaths have and they will not be blocked off for 1/7 of the

week by multiple wheelie-bins.

Beside Aldinga On Display, probably in March this year, a

‘Deadly Fun Run’ programme is being planned.

This is part of the Indigenous Marathon Project. It aims at

getting people, both indigenous and non indigenous, from couch sitters to walkers or joggers participating in community

events through a serious of training programmes and

opportunities. The local events (two of which will probably be held) will

offer various distance to be run/walked and will finish up at a

family friendly community fair type atmosphere. Representatives from this event will be eligible to participate

in the annual Marathon at Uluru.

The local film festival to be held early this month has been

deemed a big success with a pleasing number of entries and quality of films entered according to our reporter.

A speaker from SAPOL will be there to give us an update on the current situation with drugs in the

community with particular emphasis on ICE.

By the time you are reading this the ABRA committee members will be recovering from running the Annual

Australia Day Breakfast again this year.

We are running thin on volunteers this year and would like

to acknowledge our appreciation to Chris Picton MP for not only attending but assisting us with the physical setting

up in the morning before the event.

One of our committee members has moved to Victoria with her husband and we were running on a bare minimum prior

to that so we desperately need at least two more committee

members if ABRA is to continue.

Don’t miss the February meeting we’ll bring you the

‘DOPE’ on drugs. (See notice below.)

YELLOWDOG AUSTRALIA

The YELLOW BANDANA/RIBBON/CAPE has an

interesting history. It's the brainchild of Terry Ryan who

established this signal in her Legacy camps and classes. It was then introduced into Australian Dog clubs in early

2000 by Pat Robards after asking Terry if she could

borrow her idea for her shy dog Bo.

In Spring 2012, a friend of Eva Oliversson, Dog

behaviourist in Norway, Mimmi Engh, read about the use

of a yellow BANDANA/RIBBON/CAPE on dogs so

wrote to Dog clubs in Australia who used them at their courses for some years with sensitive dogs.

Thus in June 27 2012 Eva Oliversson the originator and

founder launched their program ... the Swedish International Gulahund" Yellowdog.

Do you know what a yellow bandana/cape or ribbon on a

dog or dog's leash means? You as a dog owner need to know how it is supposed to be used and about its purpose

before using these signs,

IT MEANS THAT THIS DOG NEEDS SPACE. Just like an amber traffic light, a yellow ribbon is a signal to

proceed with caution.

It's to help people, especially children to easily identify

that the dog needs to be approached slowly and that any interactions should be discussed with the dog's

handler before attempted to pat the animal.

The yellow bandana/ribbon/cape is not necessarily a signal that the dog is aggressive. There are several

reasons why a dog may well use a yellow bandana/cape

or ribbon.

It could be:

The dog has health issues

The dog is in training

The dog is being rehabilitated/learning to socialize

The dog is scared or reactive around other dogs

There are LOTS of reasons why some dogs need some more space!

They may be ill, hurt or may be just old.

They may have a new family or

The dog becomes over excited

In Memoriam Dr. Siegfried Rocznik

Passed away 11 Feb 2015

ABRA would like to acknowledge the passing of

Dr. Siegfried Rocznik one year on.

Siegfried, who gained his Engineering Doctorate in his native

homeland before emigrating to Australia where he and his

wife Christa raised a family, was interested in the local com-

munity. In his latter years Siegfried became an accomplished

athlete entering the Australian Masters Games over a period

of years winning gold, silver and bronze medals. He was in-volved as a member of ABRA, the Road Safety Group and the

Community Forum. He also stood unsuccessfully for Council.

Can look at the funny side (now)

They say if you haven't lost your sense of humour you haven't lost anything.

Take the normal dysfunctional family life, throw in family divorces, numerous early deaths, serious abuse, a

family suicide and poor parental role modelling (to say

the least) - and you can end up with trauma, complex

grief, depression, and eventually, chronic fatigue. Then add to that a physical misdiagnosis (flu) that turned out to

be a critical case of abdominal abscess-peritonitis - from

an appendix the size of a golf ball - and you would wonder, where's the hope?

On her hospital bed, at the end of her tether, Cherie had some very weird experiences (not associated with any

medication) and blind panic froze her. A male nurse came

to her aid. He suggested she might be under a spiritual attack and he proceeded to share from his heart.

Cherie had longed for a sense of purpose - to be a part of

it - not to feel so isolated, vulnerable and alone. Life had to mean something. "Surely we are put here to do some-

thing", she reasoned. And the troubles had to stop!

"The nurse began to talk about the love of God, how

much He loved me and how Christ died for me." "Do you

want to ask Him into your life?" "I did, and felt so different. My life was turned totally around."

The very deep pain and hurts from her past were gradually dealt with, and a new light dawned which has

led to fulfillment and satisfaction in helping others.

Eight years as a primary school chaplain has been a

welcome outlet, for the great love in her heart for people

and her desire to help others, in their personal struggles.

Summer holidays have brought keen bowling visitors

from all over!

Couples from England,

South Africa, Queensland,

and Kangaroo Island, as well as a friendly group of

six professional musicians

from Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, all enjoyed a roll

up at Aldinga Bay Bowling

Club recently.

Holidays have also seen Members volunteering at the

Aldinga Beach Ramp to collect fees on behalf of

Council, a project which is one of the largest annual fundraising activities for our club.

The months ahead are going to busy ones at our club too, with the second green being completely replaced in

readiness for the 2015/16 season - providing expanded

and top class facilities for bowlers and visitors, wherever they’re from!

MAMA MIA - IT’S THE BLUES BROTHERS Queens will be dancing and tail feathers shaking in February

as Cinemallunga puts on an unforgettable musical double act

in the Willunga Rec Park Stadium. Friday Feb 19 sees

Mama Mia light up the screen followed by the classic Blues

Brothers on Saturday Feb 20. Both shows feature the usual

singing, dancing, dressing up and having fun that Cinemal-

lunga is known for. There’ll be a diner, bar and live music

from the well known band Raunchy Sugar. Tickets are

priced from $10 to $20, with proceeds going to local sport-

ing clubs, the Variety Club and the new stadium 'big screen.'

This is a great chance to get a group together and and have a

fun night out. The only problem may be deciding which

Internet Safety and Scammers At Compute Your World Morphett Vale we are still see-ing at least one person per week being targeted by scam-

mers pretending to be “Technicians” calling resi-

dents. Once you give 3rd party access to your computer

which you may not know you are doing at the time, these people install programs on your computer that monitor

every move and keystroke you do on your computer

stealing your personal details.

They will start the phone call by saying they are either

from Microsoft, Telstra, or other major companies or tell-

ing you your Computer is sending out messages and they are calling to help you fix the issue.

NO Computer Technician will EVER call you to

warn you about your computer sending out messages or viruses. We strongly suggest you take the following

steps to protect yourself.

Be alert to the fact that scams exist. When dealing with

uninvited contacts from people or businesses, whether it's over the phone, by mail, email, in person or on a social

networking site, always consider the possibility that the

approach may be a scam. Remember, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Do not open suspicious texts, pop-up windows or

emails – delete them: If unsure, verify the identity of the contact through an independent source such as a phone

book or online search. Don't use the contact details pro-

vided in the message sent to you.

Hang up on phone callers offering assistance to fix any

computer issues. They will call up pretending to be any-

one or tell you your computer is sending out messages.

Beware of any requests for your details or money. Never send money or give credit card details,

online account details or copies of personal documents to

anyone you don’t know or trust. Don't agree to transfer money or goods for someone else: money laundering is a

criminal offence.

If unsure, hang up on the caller. If you have an account with the company in question, call the company back to

make sure you are 100% speaking to the company or call

your local Computer Technician for advice.

The Get Together Club A club exists in Aldinga Beach for adults with a

disability and their families. The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and

inspiration.

It is the only group of its kind in the southern area. The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was

a great success, with families sharing a meal, playing

games, and getting to know each other.

A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest

chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.

The Get Together Club has received a Community Grant from the City of Onkaparinga and is also

Really? Down on Lake Isabella , located in the high desert,

an hour east of Bakersfield, CA, some folks, new to boating, were having a problem. No matter how hard they

tried, they couldn't get their brand new 22 foot boat,

going.

It was very sluggish in almost every manoeuvre, no matter how much power they applied. After about an hour

of trying to make it go, they putted into a nearby marina,

thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong.

A thorough topside check revealed everything in

perfect working condition The engine ran fine, the out-

drive went up and down, and the propeller was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped in the

water to check underneath. He came up choking on water,

he was laughing so hard. NOW REMEMBER...THIS IS TRUE.

Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was

the trailer!

After the Rush

Driving back through the city on Christmas Night was

almost spooky. This was the same place that literally had shopped-around

-the-clock twenty four hours ago.

The crowds who had found the time and the cash (or

credit) to respond to the urging of the press, radio and TV and probably the pressure of family and friends, had

jammed the streets, stores, pubs & cafes until starry- eyed

and exhausted, they headed home in the approaching dawn. Madness really given the scarcity of frankincense

and myrrh.

So this night, after the family gatherings, a few people

thread their way through streets devoid of shoppers, store windows darkened, cafes shuttered, car parks empty.

Only an occasional bus, rarely a passenger to be seen,

grumbles its way along its allotted route, the drivers, like those in the scatter of cars just looking forward to being

home.

Cities can be lonely places.

COUNTRY FIRE SERVICE. A brief history.

1847 SA Government Introduced an Act to regulate the burning of crops and stubble (Act No. 19) This made it an offence to endanger property by negligent burning off.

– penalty 20 pounds.

1913 The new Bush Fire Act gave councils authority to appoint Fire Control Officers (FCOs). In 1916 after a public meeting at Wirrabara called by Mounted Constable Kite, the District Council of Port Germein ap-pointed the state’s first FCO.

1939. An Emergency Fire Service was founded in 1939 as an auxiliary civil defence unit to support SAFB in air raids, with 1200 men and women

volunteering. It developed after the war through the SA Fire Brigade & Police Dept. into a volunteer country fire service. Redundant trailer pumps and other equipment after the war were distributed to district councils to form volunteer bushfire and township brigades.

1947 Mr. F.L. Kerr from SAFB was assigned to the Police Department to organise an effective fire service in SA outer Metro and Country re-

gions as Director of The SA EFS. Fred Kerr toured the state for 2 months then wanted to go back to the SAFB saying a country fire service was an impossible task. We can understand his feelings when we consider SA has an area of 984,381 sq. km. Of this 130,000 sq km develops potentially disastrous fire hazard con-ditions every summer. A further 380, 000 sq km is subject to serious fires every 10 - 20 sea-

sons. The Government at the time was insistent however and the EFS was established and organised.

1959 After “Black Sunday” 1955 a Bushfire Research Committee was set up. In 1960, 4 field staff were appointed. In 1963 the Committee ap-pointed a publicity sub-committee to disseminate information and advice on land management practices that would assist in protecting properties against bushfire.

1977 In 1977 The Country Fires Act and Regulations of 1976 were pro-claimed and the organization became known as the SA Country Fire Service (CFS). It was under the administration of the CFS Board.

1978 CFS Headquarters at Keswick was built and opened 22nd August.

1989 In 1989 The S A Country Fires Act and Regulations were revised and reproclaimed and the CFS Board was set up as the Governing Body.

Today the CFS is the largest uniform service in SA with the largest

radio network in the Southern hemisphere.

Johnathon Waetford, the Director of the Wi l lunga Farmers Market Choi r (Soulfood”), an experienced musician with a

WILLUNGA TABLE TENNIS CLUB We are always looking to expand its player base and any interested players are more than welcome to join us. We cater for young, old,

male, female, experienced or novice. Games are played in the old show hall in Willunga. We have new equipment and loan bats are available. Games are played on Tuesday & Wednesday nights starting at 7.00 pm & only cost $3.00 per night.

These are separate competitions but you can play both nights if you wish. This is a friendly but socially competitive grade of table tennis and supper is always served.

(EPA) legislation bans all councils state

wide from sending these materials to

landfill.

As of 1 September 2012 computers and

televisions will also be part of this ban.

Therefore these materials can no longer be accepted as part of our hard waste

collection.

The collection point is the Southern

Waste Resource Management on

Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the

Council dump off South Road N of the

bridge).

There is no cost. All you need to do is

take your Ewaste to the appropriate tip

and they will direct you to the Ewaste

section.

You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip depositing the

card they issue you with. This card will

take you off their computer.

This can be done any day of the week.
