  • Built to inspire! On Friday 13 June 2014 at 10.30am Willunga Waldorf School officially opened the new year 6 & 7 building.

This capital works project has been funded by the Australian Government and The Hon Jamie Briggs MP officiated at the opening ceremony.

The building design conveys some of the character belonging to the Waldorf/Steiner curriculum content.

Class 6 has a focus on Ancient Rome and the establishment of Law as the foundation for civil society. This follows the birth of Democracy and the retreat of the Gods in Ancient Greece (Class 5). Class 7 moves on to the Middle Ages culminating in the Renaissance. With stylised rammed earth pillars and deep steps for sitting and standing, the outdoor eating and socialising area loosely reflects the architecture of an ancient Roman forum. Historically a gathering place of social significance and often the scene of diverse activities including political discussions and meetings, the space may well inspire the students to partake in some hearty oratory. Class 7 students had this to say about their new space: The outside seating arrangements are good for socialising Liam Miller The beautiful open space brings you closer to nature Lia Petagna The outside seating and columns reminds me of a colosseum Grace Hartley The rooms are light and airy Kiara Irvine

Janet Molloy, Principal, says: I warmly invite all members of the public to join us for the opening of this beautiful new building. Willunga Waldorf School is leading the way with architectural design in schools. We continue to challenge ourselves to create aesthetically beautiful spaces within which children will feel inspired to learn. Future School Tours: Wed 30

The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband's occupation. "He's a funeral director," she answered. "Interesting," the newsman thought. He then asked her if she wouldn't mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, ex-plaining that she had first married a banker when she was in her 20's, then a circus ringmaster when in her 40's, and a preacher when in her 60's, and now - in her 80's - a funeral director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and

    ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

    Dear Reader,

On The Run application. There has been no news from the ERD court yet on its

    judgment on this proposal appeal.

    History Month.

Several successful events were held in the district in May.

The Local History Bus Tour, held through the Aldinga

Community Centre, was booked out and well received by those who attended.

The National Trust Willunga reported that their cemetery

tours were also well attended. We havent had any feedback from the libraries.

A very successful community event was held at the Aldinga

Community Centre on May 23rd. With many families attending.

Most of you would have seen the publicity the Aldinga

Sharks Football Club received and it is good to see them getting support. (- And winning a game!)

The community working bee for the construction of the

childrens garden was also quite successful and productive. It is good to see the bitumen finally pulled up under some of this area, which should help to make it even more

    productive.

As you will see on this months cover, plans are being put together for an Aldinga Bay Christmas Pageant. The

planning group, with the support of the Aldinga Bay

Business & Tourism Association is planning a pageant on the beach to finish up at the Morgan Street ramp with

possibly a market and entertainment provided. Weather

permitting, what a lovely way to spend an afternoon before

watching the sun go down over the sea. ABRA is assisting with publicity so keep your eye on

    Coastal Views.

There will be an expression of interest form in a future issue so get talking in your group, club or business and be a part of

    the fun.

I hope you enjoy the issue. Kevin Hutton - President & Editor

    JAKE

Are you wrestling with life? Jake was born 14th November 1994 into a Christian family. But he says that didnt make him a Christian, and hes still trying to be one at least a good one. Hes always had a heart for God, and although he did make a

clear commitment to follow Christ as a fourteen year old

he has been tossed around by the normal pull of the world, and a peer group that doesnt share his faith.

The principles hes learnt as a champion wrestler have helped him with wins in Adelaide competitions, state and national titles and international wins, travelling to a number of countries by the ripe old age of twenty. The

Olympic Games 2016 is his goal, training most days

    between work hours and church.

A religious man called Saul was a champion persecutor of

the early Christians. He was dramatically converted

(becoming Saint Paul in the process) and famously said that we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against

spiritual forces that oppose the holiness of God. He said

his personal goal was for an imperishable crown, to be

awarded by the One he had been unwittingly fighting!

Jake knows what hes up against, in the natural and in the spiritual realms; and each works towards his successes.

Second place is for the first loser he says; and as luke-warmness (mediocrity) is the real pits - the very last

place he would ever want to be - his sights are firmly

fixed on the prize in both realms.

Lets cheer our local lad on. Life can be a wrestle. Lets keep looking up and aiming high!

Feedback on History Month Cemetery Tours.

(Thanks to Julie Taylor of National Trust - Willunga)

On the Saturday at St. Stephens Anglican Cemetery, about twenty-five people attended, some looking for

information on relatives, who went on up to the

Courthouse to do further research from our family archives.

In reference to your article about William George Field I

can add that he is buried in this cemetery. I shall take a photograph of the grave and send it to you. (June 2014

    issue - Ed)

Sunday at Uniting Church & Roman Catholic Cemeteries

there were good numbers of interested people with both Churches open for view. Afternoon tea was held in the

Roman Catholic Church Hall, which is where Saint Mary

McKillop set up a school, the Sisters living further along St George St. in a house still standing.

What I find interesting from the research on the families

in these cemeteries is how inter-connected they were by

marriage. All of our local Cemeteries are a treasure trove of history and we have a responsibility to preserve them.

JULY 13th is 126th anniversary of the WRECK OF

    the STAR OF GREECE.

National Trust Willunga Branch has recently been given a

canvas stretcher which as the family who gave this, says was used to carry the dead and injured seamen from the

beach on this fateful day. We shall add this to our display

of Star of Greece artifacts and information on display at

    the Courthouse.

The South Australian Advertiser, Tuesday 7 August 1888 page 7

THE LATE PRESENTATION TO THE POLICE-TROOPERS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir-In the Advertiser of August 2 appears a report of a presentation to the police, with special reference to Mounted trooper Tuohy, in recognition of services rendered at the wreck of the Star of Greece. I do not

wish to detract from the merit of Trooper Tuohy, for I can bear testimony to his zeal and endeavor to assist and rescue the sailors. I was at the wreck from half past 9 in the morning till about 6 in the evening, so that I saw the whole of that sad scene.

Now, why should the Government only recognise bravery in the public officers to the exclusion of civilians, who did all in their power to rescue the men? Surely if Trooper Tuohy deserves honor those who worked equally hard and exposed themselves to the heavy sea deserve some kind notice. The Hon. J. C. F. Johnson said he was informed that Trooper Tuohy exposed himself to the boiling waves for seven hours. Now, this is rather overdrawn. One would imagine that Trooper Tuohy was in the boiling waves all that time, whereas he was on shore most of the time, directing our efforts in trying to restore those who were apparently drowned, and the rest of the time he was assisting those who were saved and trying to save others. We all admit the bravery and zeal of Trooper Tuohy, and are glad he has been rewarded, but at the same time we do not know in what particular way McCarron, Finch, and Wells distinguished themselves at the wreck. Yet the Government have rewarded them, and Trooper Tuohy is recommended to the notice of the Royal Humane Society. Now, why should they be noticed and rewarded whilst others who exposed and exerted themselves equally as much are overlooked? I refer to the following as being those who were most prominent in exerting themselves in saving life:Messrs. Thos. Martin, Chas Addison, Noah Crisp, J. A. Nelson, H. Shepherd, B. Sparrow, F. Cully, jun., L Fidge, jun., and John McBurney. These men are practically unnoticed: and I am sure many eye-witnesses can bear me out in my statement that they were equally as brave as Trooper Tuohy. It seems unfair that only the public officers are selected for rewards. I am sure neither of the men I refer to want to be rewarded for what they did, but we who saw how they exerted themselves cannot help feeling that the Government ought to recognise the brave efforts of those who, taking their lives in their hands, went freely forward into a boiling sea to do their best in rescuing the shipwrecked sailors. Some of them were for hours on the beach in their wet clothes, having no dry clothes to put on. In all I have written I have no desire to detract from the merit of Trooper Tuohy, but only wish to see justice done to all. I sign my name so that none will think that I am writing for a reward. I am, &c.,

ALFRED SIBLY. Aldinga, August 3, 1888.

The Newspaper article below dated August 1888 (found on an actual page of the paper of that day behind an old

picture that we were having re-framed) brings to the

story of that day another perspective.

    Learn how to protect

    your local environment

South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise featuring

more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and

460 bird species. Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per

cent of our native bushland has been lost in some areas and with it, many plant, animal and bird species.

Trees For Lifes Bush For Life Program gives people from all walks of life the opportunity to help preserve what little we

have left by learning how to restore and protect our States native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops.

At the workshop, participants will learn:

    why the bush needs your help;

    the best strategies for restoring ecological processes;

    minimal disturbance techniques;

how to work safely in the bush; how you can get involved as a Bush For Life volunteer

Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through

the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques to get native plants regenerating and how to defeat invasive

weeds. Bush For Life also holds advanced workshops which

cover topics such as native plant and grass identification,

advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and

    more.

Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the

longer term. They can participate in small group activities

every now and then, adopt a bushland site of their own or join

    our Bush Action Team.

If you want to find out more about getting hands-on experience

through Bush For Life, phone the office on 8406 0500.

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact

Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace incandescent globes) contain mercury.

If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this

can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous results.

They should be disposed of properly through recycling.

Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points are available at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga

    Environment Centre.

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils

state wide from sending these materials to landfill.

As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will

also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no

longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection.

The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource

Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the

Council dump off South Road N of the bridge). There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste

to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the

    Ewaste section.

You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip

depositing the card they issue you with. This card will

    take you off their computer.

This can be done any day of the week.

    Aldinga Bay

    Open Air

    Market

Moves Indoors for Winter For the last two years Aldinga Bay Business and Tourism

Association has run a Sunday craft and Produce Market on the corner of Pridham Boulevarde and Aldinga Beach

Road. With the colder weather coming, it seemed a pity

to shut down for winter, so they sought an indoor

alternative. Moving to the Aldinga Institute Hall in Old Coach Road,

Aldinga Township, was not without risks and so it was

with some trepidation that we opened our doors on 25th May, a wonderful autumn Aldinga day. The Institute was

packed to the rafters with lots of exciting goods and services. Tasteful gourmet foodstuffs came from Rosas very creative cupcakes, through McCauls Olive Oils (drink 30mls a day neat for a healthy life!) to Willunga

Fine Foods wonderful Appleberry Syrup. If you wanted

something to eat there and then, there were yummy pancakes from Liquid Delights and Steve and his team

worked frantically cooking egg and bacon sandwiches

(with tomato and onions!) and sausages in bread, in aid of the netball team.

There was a wide variety of fashion accessories from

handmade jewellery to scarves and hats knitted from pure Shetland wool, imported from Scotland. You did not

know that you could get wool from Shetland ponies, did

you? Well you cant! The wool comes from Scottish sheep with their long shaggy fleeces with which they

brace themselves for the long cold winters in the far north

    of the British Isles.

The children were well catered for, the Jumping Castle, Slushies and Face painting were available outside and

there were lots to choose from Mr Moos Bargain Buys. Also outside was The Knife Doctor, sharpening anything from your favourite knife to the garden shears.

In excess of 550 people came through the doors and

spending was brisk. The public we spoke to loved the variety offered at the Aldinga Bay Market, which will run

at The Aldinga Institute Hall throughout the Winter on

the fourth Sunday of the Month, from 9 am until 2 pm.

The next one is on Sunday 22nd June.

Talking Health with Kelly Harding ND

Prevention is better than cure Is it not better to prevent yourself from getting sick by living

a life of wellness than to get sick and then try to get better?

    Your goal should be wellness!

Laughter is the best medicine One of the most important factors in wellness is laughter!

Various authors have suggested that laughter:

    Exercises and relaxes muscles,

    Improves respiration,

    Stimulates circulation,

Increases the production of pain killing endorphins,

Decreases the production of stress related hormones

Enhances immunity. Remember also that humour induces positive emotions that

have beneficial effects in the absence of laughter!

When was the last time you took time out to relax? Taking regular time out to relax is also vital for wellness.

Reading a book or spending time with family or friends, will

increase the levels of chemicals in your brain that make you

    feel happy.

Diets fail, lifestyle changes succeed Diet and lifestyle are also extremely important for long-term

wellness. How many times have you started a diet with the

best of intentions, only to find it too difficult to stick to for

    more than a few weeks?

In order to achieve long term goals, what you need are posi-

    tive lifestyle changes.

You are what you most consistently eat We have all heard the saying you are what you eat, but the truth is, you are what you most consistently eat. The best way to achieve your goal of wellness is to consume a diet

you can sustain for the long term. You will eat an average of

21 meals in a week. Not every one of those meals must be

    perfect.

Six steps to Healthy Eating There are six key steps to help you eat well and be healthy:

Include protein rich foods in each meal or snack.

Enjoy a minimum of three cups of fresh vegetables daily.

Enjoy a minimum of two pieces or one cup of fresh fruit every day.

Limit starchy carbohydrates to two small serves per day: Limit high glycaemic load foods such as bread,

rice, pasta and cereal to one to two servings daily.

Include nuts, seeds and healthy oils in your diet.

Drink a minimum of eight glasses of pure water every day.

Your goal of wellness can be achieved by combining a well-

ness diet with regular exercise, relaxation and fun.

Neutering (de-sexing) cats and dogs FREE MICROCHIPPING ($60 VALUE) WITH ANY DE-

SEXING PROCEDURE DURING THE MONTH OF JULY!

    JULY IS NATIONAL DE-SEXING MONTH

There are many myths or misconceptions regarding

whether or not to neuter your pets. It is important to discuss

the options with your veterinarian so you can make an

informed decision. Outlined below are some of the main reasons why de-sexing is recommended for all dogs and

    cats.

Females Mammary, ovarian and uterine tumours (cancers)

Many are malignant, and unless detected early, can

spread to the organs like the lungs. This becomes more likely with every oestrus cycle that

occurs. By their 2nd oestrus season, your pet is 26%

more likely to develop these tumours than a spayed dog.

Pyometra (infected uterus) A condition where the uterus becomes infected and

abscessed; leading to serious illness. It occurs in older

entire female dogs and cats. 1-in-4 of entire bitches will develop pyometra by 10 years of age.

    Unwanted pregnancy

    Whelping complications

These range from caesarean sections if puppies become stuck, to infections in the uterus or mastitis after

    whelping.

    Males Unwanted behaviours

Castration of male dogs at the appropriate time can help

to reduce the extent of marking or urination behaviours. It also removes the powerful drive an entire

male dog has to get to a female dog in season.

    Prostate infection and inflammation

More common in entire males and can lead to prostatic abscesses. These can cause serious illness.

    The prostate gland also enlarges in older dogs and cats;

causing problems such as blood in the urine. Testicular cancers

When is desexing recommended? The recommended age for desexing male and female dogs and cats is 5 to 6 months of age, before they reach puberty.

What does de-sexing involve? De-sexing requires a veterinary surgical procedure, performed under a general anaesthetic. Our patients stay in

hospital for the day, receive intravenous fluids throughout

their surgery, as well as pre-operative, intra-op and post-op

pain relief. Prior to surgery, they also receive a full physical examination and one of two pre-anaesthetic blood

tests either a basic standard red blood cell level (PCV)

    Compliments of Willunga Veterinary Services

SISTERS GIVE FROM THE HEART In 2005 a group of ladies played the part of the Nuns in the

Tatachilla Lutheran Colleges production of The Sound of Music and they liked the experience so much they wanted to go

on singing. At the invitation of their first Music Director, Greg

John, they started a choir and became Sisters of Abundance.

Today they are a community choir still going strong in their 9th

year. For many of the members the choir is their first

    experience of singing in public.

The members come from all walks of life and experiences but

they all enjoy coming along and getting to know one another as

they sing together and the bond that holds them together is very

simple - they sing just for the enjoyment of singing. They are

not only sisters in song but also like family and support each other. All members are involved in the life of the choir in some

form. Whether it is doing one of the many tasks involved with

running the choir or the committee, the policy of sharing the

    load works very well.

The Sisters of Abundance are very fortunate to have Rosemary

Nairn as Music Director. She came to us with a wealth of

experience and is always encouraging us to step outside our

comfort zone and have a try at something we might otherwise

have hesitated to tackle. (contd p27) With a wide ranging collection of songs, some would say quite

an eclectic mix, the choir have performed at many locations around the district and further afield. The events theyve sung

and blood protein test (at no additional cost) or the highly recommended optional upgraded full pre-anaesthetic

blood test that assesses kidney and liver function.

SISTERS GIVE FROM THE HEART (Contd)

at include concerts, community events and fundraisers,

birthdays, weddings, funerals and other special events. Their

distinctive colourful scarves stand out as they get creative with the dance movements choreographed to their songs. With a

number of the girls unable to read music this does not stop

them achieving what they set out to do as they support each

    other during the learning process.

Because many of our members work full time, a sub group was

formed to do entertaining at retirement villages and residential

care places during the week. This group is called Little Sisters

and consists of members who either dont work or study/work part time. They practice on Friday afternoons and their

repertoire is different to the main group.

Last year our Music Director decided she would like to teach some of the girls to play recorder. This has proved to be an

interesting experience for some and a relearning for those who

were taught in primary school. We currently have a group who

have become quite accomplished on recorder.

The choir is a not for profit group and each year choose a

charity to support and contribute part proceeds from the profits

of their annual concert. The members are very generous in not

only their support of each other but also people in the wider

community. The choir prides itself in choosing charities which

    support women and families.

Treasurer Lorraine and Secretary Jennie were privileged to present a cheque to Christian Care and Support at Aldinga.

This charity was chosen because they support local families and

it is hoped that the money will assist Christian Care and

Support to continue the work they do in the district.

Each Christmas at their annual Christmas dinner the choir do a

Secret Santa. Last Christmas instead of Secret Santa members

were asked to place the money they would have spent on their

gift into a money box. The money was used to purchase items

for the World Vision programs that help education and farming.

Each Monday night you will find the girls rehearsing in

Tatachilla Lutheran Colleges Performing Arts building where they enjoy some time away from their everyday lives, having a

bit of girl time and a recharge of the batteries whilst they sing.

If any ladies in the community, who enjoy singing, would like

to come along and give it a try they are most welcome.

Experience is not necessary as we help one another along the

way. Information about joining the choir or if you would like to

book them to sing at an event contact the Secretary Jennie

Welcome to our first in a five part series giving tips on

how we can support our community to better mental

    health!

Beating the blues... Its not clear what causes depression. It can be a mix of life events and personal factors. Ongoing stresses at work, school or home, issues with

bullying, isolation, family breakdown or personal factors

like a family history of depression, serious medical illness, and/or drug and alcohol use may each contribute
