ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Dear Reader,
Massive On the Run Complex Application Refused. The On the Run Service Station complex with its 50 carparks, 12m, 9m & 5.9m high advertising pylons, eleven fence mounted poster boards, car wash, and drive through fast food outlet, which was planned to replace the existing service station in historic Aldinga township, has been denied by the Development Assessment Panel. The development is completely inappropriate for the zone and that is the basis on which the application was denied. The proposed development provides no services we dont already have, but actually duplicates and competes unfairly, due to its convenient location, with some. There is certainly a lack of drive in facilities like this on South Road south of Hackham but the historic township zone of Aldinga is not the place to have it. We are now waiting to see if the developers appeal to the ERD court.
Dover Street Reconstruction Plans released. Council have released plans for the reconstruction of Dover Street to include a roundabout at the intersection with Seaview. I notice there is still no plan for a turn left deceleration lane off Aldinga Beach Road however.
This issue: We are up to 48 pages again this month. Coastal Views is now available on the web at the ABBTA web site www.aldingabayonline.com.au in colour.

Galilees Secret Garden From Ms Kinnears homegroup
Galilees early years students
(Reception and Year 1) have been caring for the garden area near , our
homerooms. We call it the secret garden because it is tucked away behind our rooms.
The children love playing and exploring in there and we also care for the many plants and trees. This week the children noticed that
some of the peaches on the peach tree were ripe, so we picked them and enjoyed eating
them together.
I like the peaches. I think they look pretty on the tree
and they tasted really
juicy. ~ Eva
I like the cubby because it is fun to play in

I like playing with the pebbles. I

INFORMATION NIGHT
MC LAREN VALE OVAL, WEDNESDAY APRIL 9th 2014 at 7.00pm
Please come along and hear about the Relay For Life in McLaren Vale!! We will be speaking to a group of people who are wondering how this will work please come and meet your new friends of Relay.
Relay For Life is an initiative of the Cancer Council of SA aimed at raising awareness for the fight against cancer. It is anticipated that the inaugural event for the McLaren Vale and surrounding areas will be held 10th and 11th October 2014 at McLaren Vale Oval. Teams of 10 to 15 people get together to raise money in the months leading up to the event, then the team members take their turn to relay around the track for 19 hours. You can run, walk, stroll, hop, skip or crawl. This is a symbol that cancer never rests. Relay For Life is run in 22 different locations throughout South Australia each year. It is a great way to engage people in the community, and enables them to participate in a team building and have fun. Each event focuses on remembering those who have been effected with cancer, and educating the community as to how they can take simple measures to endeavour to prevent cancer in their own life. Participants come with their tents and place them around the oval prepared for an overnight stay, with entertainment and activities throughout. We would like to make this an outstanding event to let people know what we can achieve as a community.
Relay For Life is more than a fundraiser, it is an opportunity for the community to get together and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight back against a disease that has taken too much, from too many. With your help we would like to make a difference in this ongoing fight against this disease. We are interested in hearing from anyone who would like to become part of our organising committee to enable us to get this exciting event started. We are also looking for Sponsors to come on board for this Event, which will give advertising from now until the Event with acknowledgement during the time of the Event. We will be holding several functions to raise money for this worthy cause where Sponsors will also be acknowledged. We are also needing to get teams registered so get your friends, families and workmates together to make up a team to join in a family fun event. ALL money raised goes to the Cancer Council of SA to assist with their ongoing support for Research, Education, Accommodation for country and regional people undergoing treatment and as well as many other support services.
For further information please contact: Emma Cockram, Volunteer Chairperson, McLaren Vale Relay For Life Telephone: 0400 064 083 Email: [email protected]

DISCOVER WILLUNGA FAIR The next big Willunga175 Event
The Willunga175 committee hopes that everyone enjoyed the Cinemallunga Old Style movie night, which was held at the Willunga Show Hall on Saturday 29 March we certainly did! The next big Willunga175 event is the Discover Willunga Fair, which will be held at the Willunga Recreation Park on Sunday 4 May 10 am 4 pm. If you ever wondered what you could do in Willunga, this day will be your chance to find out!
Weve offered all the clubs, organisations, groups and businesses associated with Willunga the opportunity to showcase their wares and specialities. Residents are also invited to show off their hobbies and collections. If you have something you would like to display as part of this exhibition please contact Graham Ormsby on 0402 892 425.
Pumpkin Competition A feature of the fair is the pumpkin growing competition, which has been under way for quite a while, with over 40 residents having purchased seeds. If youre wondering what to do with your small pumpkins, think about entering them in the Pumpkin Decoration and Pumpkin Scone competitions. Contact Sue at Willunga Physiotherapy and Pilates in High Street for more details.
Rose Competition Keen gardeners are encouraged to enter into the rose competition. Prizes will be awarded for the best single bloom and best display. More details about how to enter will be posted on the Willunga175 website.
Historical Dress Competition As we are celebrating 175 years of history, the committee would like visitors to dress in period costume and take part in a parade on the oval. Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed.
Fun and Games for All Local dance and yoga groups will perform in the Show Hall, and historical games, such as a tug-of-war, an almond-cracking competition and sack races, will take place on the oval. Food and drinks will be available throughout the day, and a bouncy castle and merry-go-round will provide even more fun for children.
Volunteers required Would you like to help at the fair? We need assistance with the organisation of the Rose competition, the Almond Cracking competition, organising the games and marshalling of stalls and other events. If you are interested please contact us. Phone Graham Ormsby 0402 892 425 Email: [email protected] Website: www.willunga.com/175

HISTORIC GATES. Last month there was a snippet about the old gates from the Adelaide Sheep Market being brought to the Willunga Catholic Church. This has now been verified. They were apparently originally installed, after cleaning and repainting, at the entrance to the cemetery. They have now been shifted to the entrance to the new section of the cemetery on the western side of the church.
Have you ever considered becoming a guide at the Willunga Court House & Slate Museum. We really need more volunteers to meet and greet our visitors and make sure that they enjoy their visit to the Museums. An orientation and training will be provided for new volunteers. As little as three hours each month would make a big difference and would be greatly appreciated. We have a variety of tasks and interests; Mock Courthouse Trials - to booked groups Helping with Family History and Research Bassett Boys Schoolroom (1860's school days - booked school groups) Willunga Now & Then Website & Willunga History Blog. For more information visit Court House Museum - see our advert above for Opening times or contact Julie Taylor 0402 122 470.

Learn how to protect
your local environment
South Australia was once a biodiversity paradise featuring more than 3500 native plant species, 140 mammal species and 460 bird species. Due to broadscale native vegetation clearance, up to 98 per cent of our native bushland has been lost in some areas and with it, many plant, animal and bird species. Trees For Lifes Bush For Life Program gives people from all walks of life the opportunity to help preserve what little we have left by learning how to restore and protect our States native vegetation through bush regeneration workshops. At the workshop, participants will learn: x why the bush needs your help; x the best strategies for restoring ecological processes; x minimal disturbance techniques; x how to work safely in the bush; how you can get involved as a Bush For Life volunteer Continuous learning opportunities are also provided through the program, ensuring participants discover the best techniques to get native plants regenerating and how to defeat invasive weeds. Bush For Life also holds advanced workshops which cover topics such as native plant and grass identification, advanced bush management techniques, brushcutting and more. Volunteers also choose how they want to be involved in the longer term. They can participate in small group activities every now and then, adopt a bushland site of their own or join our Bush Action Team. If you want to find out more about getting hands-on experience through Bush For Life, phone the office on 8406 0500. Being part of BFL just takes a small portion of your time, and passion and the rewards are endless! 2014 Dates: One Day Workshops Thursday 17 April, Stirling Saturday 3 May, Victor Harbor Thursday 22 May, Tea Tree Gully Friday 6 June, Clare Saturday 21 June, Hallett Cove Friday 4 July, Brooklyn Park Wednesday 23 July, Mitcham Hills Saturday 9 August, Littlehampton Sunday 17 August, Norton Summit Thursday 21 August, Playford Wednesday 10 September, Willunga Saturday 20 September, Brooklyn Park Wednesday 8 October, Strathalbyn Tuesday 14 October, Burnside Saturday 22 November, Brooklyn Park

Aldinga Beach Rescue. Mitsubishi Canter 2006, seats 6, Rego WVP936. Aldinga Beach C.F.S has a dedicated Rescue appliance. This appliance is fully equipped with rescue tools such as heavy duty spreaders, rescue cutters that use a hydraulic pump. These tools are used to cut a car to remove panels so that we can extricate victims from vehicles that have been involved in an accident. All of our Rescue C.F.S volunteers are extensively trained in the use of these tools and to stabilize vehicles.
Aldinga Beach C.F.S responds to Motor vehicle accidents in the Aldinga area and also into our surrounding areas. Accidents can range from a minor accident where all that is required is to ensure fuel/oil leaks are cleaned up to major accidents where the use of stabilisation is required and the use of the spreaders and cutters are required to enable victims to be removed from the vehicle. Aldinga Beach Rescue also has on board Medical oxygen and an extensive 1st aid kit. Our rescue crew has been trained in senior 1st aid and advanced resuscitation so if we are on scene of an accident before the South Australian Ambulance Service, we can start 1st aid treatment of vic-tims until the paramedics arrives.
Aldinga Beach C.F.S would like to say a very big thank you to the Willunga Lions Club Auxiliary for the donation made to Aldinga Beach C.F.S. With this donation we will be able to purchase equipment to further enhance our response capabilities. Tanya Steele

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace incandescent globes) contain mercury. If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous results. They should be disposed of properly through recycling. Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points are available at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga Environment Centre.
Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils state wide from sending these materials to landfill. As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no longer be accepted as part of our hard waste collection. The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the Council dump off South Road N of the bridge). There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the Ewaste section. You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip depositing the card they issue you with. This card will take you off their computer.
This can be done any day of the week.

Talking Health with Kelly Harding ND
Is your body inflamed? Inflammation is when things get swollen, red and painful. Inflammation is your bodys response to anything that irri-tates it. We often think of inflammation as a result of injury due to sprains, insect bites etc, which produce the localised pain, swelling, redness and heat. Although this is true, in-flammation can also be a result of poor diet, lifestyle, and stress.
Where you find pain, you find inflammation Many of those aches and pains that you feel regularly may be a sign of inflammation within your body. Almost all pain is the result of inflammation arthritis, joint, back and muscle problems, digestive disorders and many types of headaches. If there is pain, there is inflammation.
Its not old age, its inflammation You may not even be aware that you are inflamed. You may think that those aches and pains are a sign of old age. The good news is they may not be a sign of old age; the bad news is that this may be a sign your body may be inflamed and this inflammation can lead to many chronic illnesses.
Food has the power to produce or reduce inflammation One of the most inflammatory things many people are ex-posed to is food in their diet. Fruit and vegetables, and good fats from fish and nuts all help to reduce inflammation, whilst other foods can increase inflammation.
Six simple steps to wellness To help achieve wellness and reduce inflammation there are seven simple dietary targets you need to aim for.
Eat a protein rich food with each meal or snack. Eat a minimum of three cups of vegetables daily Keep refined carbohydrates to a minimum
(eg: white bread, pasta, white rice). Include nuts, seeds and healthy oils in your diet. Avoid excess alcohol, sugar and salt. Drink a minimum of eight glasses of water daily.
Managing inflammation through diet, lifestyle and natural anti-inflammatory supplements is so important to living a happier, healthier life. .
Foods that reduce Inflammation
Foods that increase Inflammation
Fruit and vegetables High sugar intake
Herbs and spices Artificial colours, flavours and preservatives
Good fats from fish, & nuts
Lack of nutrients
Organic food Alcohol and caffeine

Understanding Barking
Barking is a normal behaviour for dogs, but excessive or unwanted barking can cause many problems. It is the 2nd most common complaint received by councils, and in some instances can lead to the destruction of the animal. When dealing with problem barking, the most important thing to ask is why the dog is barking; what is driving this behaviour to occur?
Dogs learn by association, and if the behaviour (barking) is associated with a positive outcome for the dog, they will repeat it. For example, when the postman delivers mail, most dogs feel threatened by a stranger approaching their boundary. They then bark to warn the stranger off, and when the postman moves on to the next house, the dog associates the barking with the postman leaving. It learns that this is how it must act in these situations in the future to get the same response. This learning is reinforced every time the postman comes by.
The above example highlights a dog reacting normally to a situation. Other reasons are: 1. Excitement or arousal, e.g. during play. 2. Distress, e.g. new environments. 3. When they are startled or alarmed, e.g. strangers
approaching. 4. Boredom, e.g. left alone all day with no play toys or
chews. While considered normal, this reaction can still be problem behaviour to an owner. Often multiple approaches are needed to change these behaviours, including changing the environment, distracting the dog, and positively reinforcing relaxed behaviour. Sometimes the help of a qualified dog trainer or veterinary behaviourist may be necessary.
Dogs may also bark as an abnormal response to a situation. This may be seen when a dog barks with no obvious inciting cause, or if barking is excessive. This may occur due to: 1. Underlying medical conditions, e.g. arthritis pain, or
senility in old dogs. 2. Behavioural disorders, e.g. anxiety, obsessive
compulsive disorders, or fear predispositions.
A health check should be the first step for any dog with a barking problem. Then veterinary advice can be sought to help implement a management plan. If barking continues despite this it is possible a behavioural disorder is the cause, and a veterinary behaviourist will be required. If you are having problems with a barking dog, please visit your veterinarian. The sooner the problem is addressed, the easier it will be to manage!

STEVE
When the chips are down
The Snapper Point Chicken Hawk (fish, chips and pizzas) on Aldinga Esplanade was where Steve Shearer battled in the late 90s and not just with his business concerns. Marriage collapses can be especially traumatic: perceived injustices, childrens lives torn apart, heavy financial losses, and the grief and hopelessness of it all when expectation, work and effort come to nothing. Although Steve had made a commitment of his life to Christ as a young adult, had been healed through prayer from life-threatening chronic asthma and a serious back injury, he had no answer to this crushing depression -which lasted over eighteen months.
Having only the very basics of his faith to cling to he resisted the temptation to drop out of church life. He gradually found the critical support he needed from Christian friends and slowly pulled through.
Steve recovered his purpose. He gives the credit to God for restoring him from the ashes of depression: for his lovely Filipino wife Debbie who works at Aldinga Life Care, his job with a local vineyard, Douglas Gully and his voluntary work in the Philippines each year helping with building and unemployment problems.
So whether the chips are down or youre ready to cash them in, Steves advice is: Dont give up, look up! Let Jesus see you through.
