    AGM 12th August 2015 - 7:30 pm

Aldinga Community Centre Stewart Avenue Aldinga Beach.

    ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION

    Dear Reader,

It is unfortunate that our guest speaker for the June General

Meeting had to cancel at the last minute and I apologise to

those good folks who braved the cold to come out and hear him in vain.

Having gone through some serious family health issues

myself over the last year or so, I empathise that Malcolm had

just buried his mother that day with his wife home very ill and under 24/7 care.

We hope to get him back for our AGM in August.

Keep your eye on Coastal Views for confirmation.

At the time of writing, the demolition of the Port Road

service station for the new On The Run complex is well

under way. Spare a thought for the businesses and residents in the

township whose buildings are being vibrated by the

machinery on the site and bombarded by the pigeons who

    have lost their previous home.

Several people have commented to me that they can feel a

new sense of peace and fulfilment since the new Buddhist

statue was erected overlooking us. Perhaps one doesnt have to be a Buddhist to get some advantage from its presence.

Feedback Im getting indicates very few people are in any way put out by the presence of this new tourist attraction in our area.

Got some thoughts? Drop us a line at:

[email protected] or posted to Box 270 Aldinga

We are pleased to announce our web page is up and running

at long last. It is still a work in progress but can be viewed at

I hope you enjoy the issue.

School children visit St Anns Anglican Church.

In anticipation of the 150th anniversary in October this

year of St Anns Anglican Church, Aldinga, a group of children from Galilee Catholic School visited the historic church and cemetery for a talk and tour on the 15th

June. They heard about life in Aldinga in the 1850s and

how the church was built, noting how the cemetery revealed the story of peoples lives.

Dressed to tell the story were Pat Roper, Trish Frith, Tony Duncan, Brian McMillan and Anne Chittleborough

Notice that a "Medium" is a size 14-16 Remember making an apron in Home Ec? Remember Home Ec?

The History of 'APRONS'. (I don't think our kids know what

an apron is.) The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few and because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons required less material.

But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the Autumn, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. The Govt. would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love The above is anonymous and I received it in an email. I wanted to share it with you. Ed.

    WHAT'S THIS MAN BEEN DOING?

    Graham

Some people like to stay in their own little corner of the world. Well, Graham does too; or at least he did. As a

high schooler in Christies Beach he preferred to cycle

home for lunch rather than join the others on the oval. He generally kept to himself, reading books rather than

    playing sport.

Still something of a loner, he followed his father's foot-steps into the viticulture industry not long after leaving

school and spent twenty years in the army reserves

(eighteen in artillery). The army helped his love of self-

discipline but added little to his social confidence as a leader of men. And whilst he largely succeeded at staying

free of peer pressure for most of his life he did end up in

hospital for three weeks (unconscious for one) after a drunken motor bike accident. Then when he returned to vineyard work Graham became

acquainted with a chap who radiated what he had been looking for: peace, joy and serenity. He followed his lead

into his own experience of Christ - but he was judgmental

and it wasn't until he asked his brother's forgiveness for

judging him that he was set free with a blessing he calls speaking in tongues.

Behold! A new man! Boldness! Our conservative, mild-

mannered Graham took to the streets in Kuala Lumpur, Bali and the Philippines; also visiting hospitals, prisons

and detention centres, including UNHCR. He has seen

and been part of hundreds of healings and miracles among people of all faiths whom he found were hungry

for answers from a real God who really loves them.

To cap it all off he chatted with Michelle Corby and

prayed with Andrew Chan in Kerobokan prison; and can attest to a new boldness that was not his to start with, but

    as he says, divinely given.

Graham attends Southern Life Church 280 Beach Rd Hackham. 08) 8326 0777 - meet 10am Sundays

THE SOUTHERN VALES VIEW CLUB SUPPORTS THE SMITH FAMILYS

    $3.5 MILLION WINTER APPEAL

Members of the SOUTHERN VALES VIEW Club are urging the local community to support disadvantaged children and young people with their education by donating to The Smith Familys 2015 Winter Appeal.

VIEW stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women and was established in 1960 by The Smith Family as a service to women and the community.

Australias VIEW Network of 17,000 women is the single largest community sponsor of the national childrens charity, which provides critical opportunities for children in low socioeconomic families to fully participate in school.

This year, The Smith Family is aiming to raise $3.5 million through its annual Winter Appeal, which highlights how how a familys severe financial hardship can impact on a childs learning.

VIEW National President Robin Perros said: With one in 10 Australian children living in disadvantage1, our members are very proud to be supporting The Smith Family in helping them meet their fundraising goals.

Through our year-round fundraising and 50,000 hours of volunteering for The Smith Family, VIEW women are making a significant difference in the lives of many disadvantaged children and families across the country, Mrs Perros said.

The Smith Family CEO Dr Lisa OBrien said: Our 2015 Winter Appeal - No child should ever feel like this aims to raise greater awareness about how vulnerable and isolated many disadvantaged children feel at school when they are struggling to keep up with their classmates.

Research shows that children who grow up in financial disadvantage are more likely to experience financial hardship as adults they continue the cycle, Dr OBrien said. Without the extra support and tools they need for school, theyll fall even further behind and never reach their full potential.

We currently have 9,575 Australian children who need support today and we are hugely grateful to the women of VIEW for their contribution to our cause.

The 2015 Winter Appeal will run until Tuesday 30 June and all donations are fully tax deductible. To donate to The Smith Familys Winter Appeal phone 1800 024 069 or visit www.thesmithfamily.com.au

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils state wide from sending these materials to landfill.

As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no longer be

accepted as part of our hard waste collection.

The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the Council dump off

South Road N of the bridge). There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the Ewaste section.

You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip depositing the card they issue you with. This card will take you off

    their computer.

This can be done any day of the week.

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace incandescent globes) contain mercury.

If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous results.

They should be disposed of properly through recycling. Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points are available

at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga Environment Centre.

Getting to know Aldinga Beach C.F.S members

    Name: Liz Pryor

    Age: old enough

    to know better

    Family: 1 dog

    called Harry, who

    likes to eat so-

    fas.. Work: Cattle Vet-

    erinarian

    Years in CFS: 3

    Positions held in CFS:

    Fire fighter, Road Crash rescue operator; Treasurer;

    Cadet leader

    Why you joined:

I was a member of the SES in Victoria, when I

moved to Aldinga Beach I wanted to be able to make

use of my Road Crash Rescue training. As CFS has

road crash rescue responsibilities in South Australia,

I joined the CFS. I thought being a firefighter would

be a new challenge and being new to the area

thought it was a good way to get involved with the

    community.

What do you find most rewarding?:

I am so grateful to be part of such a wonderful

community, its hugely rewarding to be able to give

back to that community in my own small way. I also

enjoy working with our Brigade. We are a diverse

bunch and everyone brings something different to

the brigade. Whether we are having a laugh at

training or getting the job done at a fire we all work amazingly well together, and its a privilege to be part of such a well-trained team.

Combined Community Event Hosted by Bowlers A very convivial fundraising and social gathering of 60

guests including Members from Aldinga Bay Bowling and Croquet Clubs, as well as Zonta Noarlunga Southern

Vales Club and other guests enjoyed a very special

morning tea event at the Aldinga Bay Bowling Club-rooms recently.

The occasion was held to honour family, friends, sport-

ing colleagues and others who have faced recent serious

    health challenges.

    Pictured: Carol Huxtable, Mary Colville,

Councillor Hazel Wainwright, Doug Johnsson OAM, Sandy Buttery

Vice-President of Aldinga Bay Bowling Club, Carol

Huxtable encouraged guests to think of how attributes

such as strength, resilience, courage and most of all ac-

ceptance might have helped those whove face recent serious health issues to face those huge challenges; and

to consider how everyone might take those same positive

attributes into their own lives when faced with what might seem like insurmountable problems.

Sandra Buttery, Vice-President of Zonta spoke of the

many projects her members are involved with and intro-duced special guest Mary Colville.

Mary outlined the great work members of Zonta have

done since around 1999, in making and presenting spe-

cially crafted breast cushions which provide comfort to women patients following had breast surgery at the

    Royal Adelaide and Noarlunga Hospitals.

The cushions when presented have been specially em-broidered with a yellow rose, and beautifully packed in

cellophane with a greeting card enclosed.

A delicious Devonshire morning tea was prepared and

served to guests by the women bowling members of Aldinga Bay Bowling Club who were delighted to host

this very worthwhile fundraising and social event.

Almost $700 was raised also to assist Zonta members to continue their very worthwhile Breast Cancer Cushion

    Project.

Neutering (de-sexing) cats and dogs $40 off the normal price of desexing

    when booked in July 2015.

Please call the clinic for terms and conditions.

    JULY IS NATIONAL DE-SEXING MONTH

There are many myths or misconceptions regarding

whether or not to neuter your pets. It is important to discuss the options with your veterinarian so you can make an

informed decision. Outlined below are some of the main

reasons why de-sexing is recommended for all dogs and cats.

Females Mammary, ovarian and uterine tumours (cancers)

Many are malignant, and unless detected early, can spread to the organs like the lungs.

This becomes more likely with every oestrus cycle that

occurs. By their 2nd oestrus season, your pet is 26% more likely to develop these tumours than a spayed dog.

    Pyometra (infected uterus)

A condition where the uterus becomes infected and abscessed; leading to serious illness. It occurs in older

entire female dogs and cats. 1-in-4 of entire bitches will

develop pyometra by 10 years of age.

    Unwanted pregnancy Whelping complications

These range from caesarean sections if puppies become

stuck, to infections in the uterus or mastitis after whelping.

    Males Unwanted behaviours

Castration of male dogs at the appropriate time can help

to reduce the extent of marking or urination behaviours. It also removes the powerful drive an entire

male dog has to get to a female dog in season. Prostate infection and inflammation

More common in entire males and can lead to prostatic

    abscesses. These can cause serious illness. The prostate gland also enlarges in older dogs and cats;

causing problems such as blood in the urine.

    Testicular cancers

When is desexing recommended? The recommended age for desexing male and female dogs

and cats is 5 to 6 months of age, before they reach puberty.

What does de-sexing involve? De-sexing requires a veterinary surgical procedure,

performed under a general anaesthetic. Our patients stay in

hospital for the day, receive intravenous fluids throughout their surgery, as well as pre-operative, intra-op and post-op

pain relief. Prior to surgery, they also receive a full

physical examination and one of two pre-anaesthetic blood

No one believes seniors... Everyone thinks they are senile. An elderly couple was celebrating their sixtieth anniversary. The couple had married as childhood sweethearts and had moved back to their old neighbourhood after they retired. Holding hands, they walked back to their old school. It was not locked so they entered, and found the old desk they'd shared, where Andy had carved I love you, Sally ..... On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of an armoured car, practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up and, not sure what to do with it, they took it home. There, she counted the money - fifty thousand dollars! Andy said, "We've got to give it back'. Sally said, 'Finders keepers'. She put the money back in the bag and hid it in their attic. The next day, two police officers were canvassing the neighbour-hood looking for the money, and knocked on their door. 'Pardon me, did either of you find a bag that fell out of an armoured car yesterday?' Sally said, 'No.' Andy said, 'She's lying. She hid it up in the attic'. Sally said, 'Don't believe him, he's getting senile'. The agents turned to Andy and began to question him. One said: Tell us the story from the beginning'. Andy said, 'Well, when Sally and I were walking home from school yesterday .....' The first police officer turned to his partner and said, 'Were outta here!'

A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group

including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest

chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.

The Get Together Club has received a Community Grant from the City of Onkaparinga and is also supported by

    FROM

THE VALUE OF A SMILE (from Martin Dunstan) A smile costs nothing, but gives so much.

It reaches those who receive without making poorer those who give.

It takes but a moment, but the memory sometimes lasts a life-

    time.

None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and

none is so poor but that he can not be made richer by it.

A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in busi-

ness, and is the countersign of friendship.

It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged.

A smile is sunshine to the sad, and is nature's best antidote for

    trouble.

Yet, it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed or stolen, for it is of no value to anyone until it is given away.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of

yours, as none needs a smile so much as he or she who has no

    more to give.

    THE LETTER "E"

The most unfortunate letter in the alphabet, some say, is the letter "E", because it is always out of cash, forever in debt and never out of danger. That's all true; still it is never in war, always in peace and always in something to eat. It is the beginning of existence, the commencement of ease and the end of trouble. Without it there would be no life, no heaven. It is the centre of honesty and always in love. It is the beginning of encouragement and endeavour

    and the end of failure.

ALDINGA U3A Aldinga U3A aim is to provide

Physical or Mental stimulation to local residents. There are no exams or

homework, the only personal requirement is having an interest in living and

    enjoying life.

One of our activities is "Drawing", with the group meeting at Kangarilla. This is an ideal

location with the surrounding countryside offering a perfect background for the creation

of landscape masterpieces, while the wide variety of plant life offers different challenges

    to the "Drawing Enthusiast"
