Measuring systems

There are 2 different measuring systems available: One for thelaboratory and one for use at the production line.

System for the laboratory

The measuring system for the lab consists of the Alcolyzer Plus basicinstrument, a DMA density meter and an SP-1m automatic samplechanger. The sample changer loads up to 24 samples automaticallyinto the system. The typical sample throughput is 15 samples perhour. While the Alcolyzer Plus determines the alcohol content, anAnton Paar oscillating U-tube density meter determines the densityof the whisky samples. The DMA 4500 is especially suitable forroutine work; the DMA 5000 is usually chosen for research work dueto its higher accuracy. These components are stacked on top ofeach other to take up minimum lab space.

System for use at the production line

The measuring system for quality control during production consistsof the Alcolyzer Plus basic instrument with an integrated samplefilling unit SF-1. The SF-1 utilizes a peristaltic pump for filling andreplacing samples. The sample can be measured directly out of thebottle.

An optional pH and color measurement can be integrated into bothsystems. The color measurement determines the light absorption of430 nm of the whisky in the spectral range according to the EBCand ASBC standards. The pH sensor is attached to the side of theinstrument and connected to the sample loop.

Alcolyzer PlusWhisky Analyzing System

Accurate whisky analysis ensures excellent product quality.Whisky analysis therefore constitutes an essential part of thedaily work in the distillery. The new Alcolyzer Plus WhiskyAnalyzing System is the innovative measuring system whichefficiently and precisely determines alcohol %vol, color and pHof spirits with an extract content up to approx. 5 g/l, such aswhisky, vodka, gin and rum:

Operation

The Alcolyzer Plus Whisky AnalyzingSystem is simply adjusted with water andoccasionally with an alcohol/water solution. This adjustment is valid for all types ofwhisky, vodka, gin and rum. The optionalpH and color measuring devices areadjusted with appropriate standards.

The measuring data are displayed and sentto a printer, PC or LIMS system. Up to 100analyses can be stored in the system.Sample identification is either assignedautomatically or entered via a keyboard orbar code reader.

Principle

The heart of the system is the patented, selective alcohol measurement: A narrow, highly alcohol-specific range of the NIRspectrum is evaluated using a speciallydeveloped, highly stable high-resolutionspectrometer and suitable algorithms.

In this particular spectral range, theinfluence of other whisky ingredients is sosmall that extremely accurate alcoholresults are obtained.

This new measuring method does notrequire the chemometric calibrationprocedures needed by traditional NIR-based instruments. Due to its selectivityand linearity, the measuring method onlyrequires adjustment/calibration with waterand an alcohol/water solution.
