Meet your College Head

Meet your Residence Director

Dr. Crystal Rae Coel

Tyler BradleyYou may have seen Tyler at your floor meetings or hanging around the lobby. Tyler comes from Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design. During his undergrad, he served as an RA for three years, an orientation leader, tour guide, Dean of Students intern, and editor-in-chief of the campus student news-paper. Coming from a K-12 school with less than 500 people, this RD understands the small town feel. He is here through summer of 2017 until he completes his degree in postsecondary education administra-tion.

His addictions include Doctor Who, Heroes Reborn, Empire, and House of Cards, and he’s big on social justice and Bernie Sanders. He is an avid nap taker and appreciates a good pun.

Come stop by his office whenever he’s there, or just stop him around campus. Bonus points if you know how to play Euchre! Check out some of his graphic design work at svsu.edu/~tsbradl1

Serving as the College Head of LIZO for 8 years, Dr. Coel comes from the University of Wisconsin before her time at MSU. She was born in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA (Haverford Township), and is a HUGE Philly sports fan even when they suck...Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Eagles---she loves all of them and used to attend all games. She misses the shopping--huge malls within 15 minutes of her home and philly cheesesteaks WITH-OUT green peppers--no one in Philly has green peppers on cheesesteaks!!!??? But she does not miss the traffic.

Dr. Coel has 3 degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media Arts and Journalism--- she wanted to be a news anchor but hated reporting, and the money did not seem plentiful in the 1980s ---Master of Arts in Communications--wanted to go into entertainment law---Juris Doctor----passed the Pennsylvania Bar----BUT, practiced Criminal Law in KY while working at Murray State in 2000-2001. (long story)Dr. Coel LOVES her career and LOVES her students!

Higher Ed is a calling from God....it was NOT her choice. She wanted to be a rich lawyer. God told her she was going to be a poor educator. 😁 This is a joke with a lot of truth toit. She sent over 300 resumes to law firms, PR firms and Communications companies. She could not buy a job so her first job out of law school was in retail. She also was an adjunct professor at the Community College of Philadelphia where a student gave her a thank you card, a teacher coffee mug, a hug and said she was her role model. That changed Dr. C’s life and she realized she was called to teach.

Her greatest joy is watching a student ingest what she teaches and then perform better than her. Her pet peeve...too many to name.

Governor Beshear appointed her to the state commission for public defenders so she’s Commissioner Coel in KY. President Davies asked her to Chair the 60th Year of Desegre-gation Committee. She and her colleagues recently had a banquet with 3 retirees as the VIP guest presenters. They spoke about their journeys at MSU. Since “Org Com” Day was the same day, she invited the 30 successful Organizational Communication alums to the banquet where they helped students to network. She believes students lack professional telephone and business professional skills that will hurt careers if they do not learn them before they leave college. Therefore, the banquet also served as an opportunity to learn dining etiquette with a professional dining expert who also explained the different forks and where to place the napkin.

Despite some still thinking they know every-thing, she has joy in reaching those she can and the others...she just prays for them in hoping humility will eventually take over.

Regardless, she feels blessed, humble and thankful. Mediocrity is never an option; so she won’t accept anything but the best from herself and her students.

Tyler poses at the ID Card Station for Homecoming Decorations. Tyler designed the lobby TV images of active and former Lizo superheroes.

Dr. Coel takes on form as Dr. Crystal Fury as part of Homecoming Decorating’s theme Raise Your S.H.I.E.L.D.

RA Kelsey helps save person’s life

Getting silly with homemade puttyBefore the weekly Disney feature, residents collected in the lobby with 8th floor RA, Nellie Snead, to make little baggies of silly putty. There were many giggles and several different trials before a correct concoction could be made, but in the end, many residents left with stained hands and a gooey mess to play with to relieve stress.Freshman Shannon Enzenberger said the activity

had a great turn out, not only form Lizo residents, but also from friends from other colleges. Dr. Coel, our very own college head even made an appearance. Shannon also said, “It was a great chance to come together and do something a little different. It was cool to see so many people, even from outside of Lizo with a smile on their face!”

All in all the night was a huge success and for those who were unable to make the community builder, there will be plenty more to come! Make sure to mark your calendars for the next com-munity builders and relieve some mid-semester stress.

Most people in Lizo know Kelsey for her extraordi-nary work as an RA, or for her passion for veterinary technology. This month, Kelsey added something new to her list of accomplishments- saving a life.

While Kelsey was traveling home on September 11, she witnessed a tanker three cars ahead of her fall on its side. After seeing many vehicles speed past the accident, Kelsey felt inclined to stop and help in any way she could. When Kelsey and a few other good Samaritans reached the crash, Kelsey climbed onto the overturned tanker to see the state of its driver.

When she opened its door she found the driver con-scious but covered in his own blood due to a large laceration on his head which was exposing his skull.

Kelsey explained that she was surprised to find someone who wasn’t unconscious and “was amazed that he was alive” after such a crash.

Then, further showing her selfless heart and altruis-tic attitude, Kelsey helped the man to lay down away from the tanker and proceeded in holding his split head together with a spare shirt. Not only did Kelsey keep the man from bleeding out, but she continued to speak with him and provide comfort him until the ambulance arrived almost twenty minutes later.

Though Kelsey deserves much acclaim and honor for such a noble act, she expressed that she believes anyone from Lizo would have done just the same. We are a huge family here, and there is no way that we would leave anyone in need behind.

LIZO. YOU KNOW! It is not uncommon to hear these three words echoing throughout the corridors of Elizabeth Hall. Lizo is the most proud and spirited residence hall in Murray and those living here are never afraid to show their eagle pride.

This was especially evident during this month’s Residential College Pride Day held September 23. With almost all residents showing off their Elizabeth College T- shirts and shouting the Lizo chant, every-one on campus got the message that Lizo is on top.

Then, Lizo sponsored a campus wide invitation to their annual Disney movie night, where they served over 15 pizzas to everyone as they enjoyed a few of the classic childhood favorites.

Not only did the day allow students to show what an honor it is to be part of Lizo, but it showed the great community we have, and the great people that make up the building. Here is to greatest place to live on campus!

Pride Day gets Lizo Eagle spirits soaring Work It!

Nellie Snead and Casey Montgomery felt that the activity was a little low in the hall and devised a brilliant idea. On a Wednesday evening, Shia Leboeuf blared through the intercom calling all residents down to participate in their work out program, Just Do It!

On each floor that had a lounge, Nellie and Casey set up a little workout regimen for residents to run through, including crunches, balance exercises, and different cardio moves.

Once the 30 participating residents got to the ninth floor, they raced all the way back down and created their very own mixed snack before listening in and talking about ways to be healthy, even when hav-ing a busy college schedule.

RA programs for September reached 96 people in attendance total. Programs are a great way to get to know your neighbors. Keep up the

community building!

As Kris and Kelsey were on their rounds one night, Kris decided to uphold the tradition of trying to scare Kelsey. So as Kelsey was getting a drink from the water fountain, Kris decided to sneak around the corner. His cover was almost blown when his foot caught on the ground, but he decided to continue on with the plan anyways. He jumped out and screamed BOO! And Kelsey proceeded to shoot spit water onto Kris’s face and another shot in the shoulder. Kelsey then fell to the ground in hysterical laughter, continuing to spit water all down her own shirt. Residents from all down the hall came out to watch the spectacle.

Austin was visiting EIU for Fall Break and after a series of probably not so intelligent acts, he got himself stuck in the elevator for over 4 hours with a group of 12 friends. There were people crying in the corner, praying that they would survive. This caused a few of Austin’s friends to remember that one could become an ordained priest online. After a few questions and some official documents later, 11 people in the elevator were ordained priests of the EIU Church of the Elevator. Austin reports that the first service to be performed is to have more than 100 people in attendance.

Another great Homecoming has come and gone and it was yet again a suc-cessful bid for the all people involved, who after long hours of hard work, won the lobby decorating contest for the 12th year in a row!

Residents and RCC members who made it to the weekend walked or watched in the parade that started in downtown Murray and made its way to Murray State’s front gates. Our very own Mr. and Mrs. Lizo, Ryan Christensen and Shea Lanaghan, rode in the parade, sporting their disguised Superman and Wonder Woman Costumes being announced by the Superman theme as they waved at Murray city residents and handed out candy.

Following the excitement of the parade, many organizations and groups set up shop at Tent City down on the Football field. Tent City was packed with students and alumni, all coming together to bond over shared experiences on Murray State’s campus. Tent City came to an end with many cheers as Sigma Sigma Sigma President Kristen Henson was elected Homecoming Queen and Alpha Sigma Phi member Black Thomas, Homecoming King.

The game of Murray State University vs Austin Peay State University was very tight. Both teams played their hearts out, but in the end the game went to Murray in a 34-18 victory. Individual organizations and festivities continued throughout the night and into Sunday.

Lizo takes Homecoming

Left, L.I.Z.O. special agents gathered around Dr. Crystal Fury to deliberate on incoming agents. Our very own college head, Dr. Coel volunteered to be Dr. Crystal Fury for a day as they presented the lobby to the judges.

These two residents went above and beyond for volunteering for the winning Homecoming lobby decorations. They were specially invited to participate in the L.I.Z.O presentation as classified agents.

Our lovely behind-the-desk friend dressed up as Agent Phil ‘Jorge’ Coulson. He was the highlight of the judges’ opinion, letting them take selfies with the one and only. After his hard work for Homecoming, he has opted to take vacation away from Lizo for a couple of weeks.

cook some Halloween-themed fruit pizzas and discuss various scary movie trivia facts. Then watch Annabel and the Shining in the lobby for some scary movie action before Halloween.

Man’s Best Friend ZoneLZO/RCC Date Auction raises hundreds for Calloway County Humane Society

Valentine ’s Day may have come a bit early for Lizo residents. Last month, the RCC held a date auction to raise money for the Murray Humane Society. All members of the Residential College Council and the RA staff got to strut their stuff in attempt to make a little money for the abandoned dogs and cats of the city.

RCC member, Dylan, tried a Magic Mike technique, stripping off his shirt to play to the ladies, which earned him a bid of $22.

Freshman Catherine Elleman expressed that, “The night was fun, even though I wasn’t there to buy anyone. Hearing the dating profiles and watching everyone dance was entertaining. Over all the night was a hoot and a half.”

The auction was followed up by a spaghetti dinner in the lobby for all the RCC mem-bers and their generous bidders.

The event was a huge success, raising $444 to help expand the humane society and saving many more animals.

Left: Dylan put on a show. For the finale, as everyone bid, he took off his shirt so everyone could gaze at his gloriousness. Bottom: Nick Bushnell though not a RCC member, volunteered to be auctioned off in the name of puppies. Top right: Big bucks. Freshman Social Chair Jessica Thomp-son didn’t know what she was getting into when she volunteered for that night. She went for the highest bid, $60.

Break those Barriers!

Peter and Tory built a physical wall between themselves as a representation of what sexism does to both genders. In the end, the wall was punched down by the two and kicked away to reveal equality.

RAs Peter Ney and Tory Lanaghan put on a program at the end of last month that tore down the old pretenses of gender. Breaking Down the Gender Barriers brought up points of feminism and the reasons why men and women need it now just as much as ever.

The response from the crowd of nearly thirty students was lively, giving snaps when they agreed and laughs at the right points as Peter and Tory built a real wall between themselves. At the end, they went through the ways that men and women can break down those barriers by simply respecting each other and then tore down the box wall in commemoration.

“I thought it went really well,” said Tory Lanaghan. “We were a little nervous that the topic would only draw out the women, but we had a really good group to support us from both genders.”

The program sparked discussion in the lobby for the next hour as girls and guys talked their way through different social justice topics and discussed how every-one could make a difference one way or another.
