Why 2nd Floor is the Best: We have a really diverse group with a strong community and our floor smells better than all of the guy floors.

Why 3rd Floor is the Best: My floor is the best because we will know how to survive any situation that hits us.

Why 6th Floor is the Best: Because of my awesome residents who make it the best!

Why 9th Floor is the Best: Only the best live on the penthouse! The 9th floor is chill, and we know it.

Why 5th Floor is the Best: We are the bunch of independent Amazon women.

Why 8th Floor is the Best: Because it’s my floor, duh. No because I try to make it feel like home as much as possible. Also, I try to get to know each and every one of my girls on my floor.

Why 4th Floor is the Best: Because my guys are always there for each other and would do anything to help any other of the residents out.

Why 7th Floor is the Best: My residents are fantastic human beings and always keep me entertained and on my toes. 7th Floor ladies are certainly one of a kind.

College means change: a new place to live, new friends, new teachers, new everything. If you haven’t noticed, there is a new building going up right next to us called New Franklin. For the freshman the new building does not mean much, it is all they are used to; but for sopho-mores, juniors, and seniors New Franklin is a bit of a hindrance.

New Franklin has done two major things to cause annoyance. It has eliminated nearly 100 parking spaces, creating a huge problem with college residents and even more with commuter parking. Also, it has cut off a direct pathway between the two clusters of residence halls. We have to walk years to get to Old Rich and Franklin now. And we haven’t even mentioned the irritating noises that wake everyone up on the front half of the building.

Yet, even with these inconveniences the general feeling is a good one. As one upperclassman stated plainly; “I think it’s necessary. The old one’s falling apart.” And they are wise words. Franklin has been around for too many years, and really did need remodeling at the very least, just like Springer, which will eventually be replaced after Franklin is finished.

New Franklin creates new Elizabeth Experiences

Event Week shows residents Home Away from Home

The largest part of New Franklin’s construction began this fall, with the building’s framing being put together.

Fried chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, corn, and sweet tea. Aside from a good night’s rest and an A+ grade, this is a college student’s dream: a home-cooked meal. When the often sultry month of August rolls around and students pour into the facilities of colleges around the country, they often have to say goodbye to grandma’s pies and mom’s chicken noodle soup. But at Murray State Univer-sity’s Elizabeth College, RCC made Lizo a home away from home the week of August 23 to welcome all new and returning students. With activities such as Evening at Wellness, Nerd Out, and International Trivia, students formed new families and commu-nities in the their home.

To jump start the home away from home event, the Lizo RCC decided to welcome new students with a home cooked meal. The week continued with a dance party Monday, Nerd out Tuesday, where the sounds of Star Wars and video games echoed through the stairways, and a Wednesday night of watching the Lion King to initiate Lizo’s weekly Disney film night. Throughout the week many RAs put on their own events to keep up the spirits of homesick students, including coloring, eating cookies, and a fun photo booth where stu-dents posed with props and friends.

The week concluded with a delicious night of ba-con, which brought out almost all of Lizo’s residents as well as many other wandering students who could smell the greasy goodness seeping out of the building.

In the end, Home Away From Home was a week filled with making new friends, participating in fun activities, and most importantly, feeling at home at Murray State University.

Top, residents enjoy pounds upon pounds of free bacon. Bottom, RAs held a large game of ninja to engage people throughout the week.

Funky Monkeys are funny stories that members of the Residential

College Council share and vote upon. The best one each week is

published in the weekly Toilet Talks. These are a collection of those

published this academic year thus far.

Austin once broke his arm during a football game. His father however, didn’t believe him at all, called him a wuss and told him to get back on the field. He went to his mom, she said the same. So did his sister. And his coach. Obviously the logical action of breaking one’s arm is to jump right back into the game head first. Three hours later. Austin’s arm was still broken and all the people around him decided that maybe it was time to take him to the ER. Just after they took him in the back, his parents had just left and a woman in labor came into the same room as him. Like a gentleman, he offered to hold her hand while she waited for her husband and, natural-ly, the woman latched onto him, holding onto his broken arm until he blacked out.

Under The Sea

If you know Dylan, then you know that every year, at least once, he will appear bare as the day he was born before a minimum of fifty people. Having moved off campus, he had hoped that he would not be in this situation. No such luck. During the Cambridge Block Party Dylan was in his apartment , showering like a good kid. He had just stepped out of the bathroom with a towel on his waist when he noticed about twenty people standing in his doorway. “Is this the party?” one kid slurred out. Dylan, stunned, told them no. Despite trying to push them out, more people continued to pour in, and poor Dylan, in his towel, was forced to host them.

Everyone knows what coffee does to you in the morning. It may be a pick me up, but your stomach gets a little louder with each sip. Well, our lovely friend Dylan had had three cups one morning last week and was having problems in his 8 AM class.

He was holding it in, trying to at least make it silent, when all at once it hit him. The teacher had just paused after asking a ques-tion, when he let it rip. pfFFEEeeaAAt.

“The desk vibrated beneath me,” Dylan said. “Everyone stared, even the teacher.” Needless to say, coffee is a wonderful thing, but, at least for Dylan, when the farts come, there is no stopping them.

Emily was at church when the worst happened. As she attempted to make a flavored drink, her water spilled all over her lap.

For the rest of the time, she attempted to move away from the water stain, follow-ing her boyfriend, Jordan, around who was laughing the entire way.

As they left, Emily waddling home, Jordan followed in her wake, singing “Under the Sea” as she scowled the entire way.

PROGRAMMING SPOTLIGHTS

One day in August, RAs Peter Ney and Tory Lanaghan decided it would be fun idea to go hiking at the state park Land Between the Lakes (or LBL for short). Though a fabulous idea, from beginning to end, the trip didn’t go as planned.

Instead of the thirty minutes they had planned, the trip there had to be extended because of a temporary bridge closing due to a boat crash into the side of it. After the first hour had passed, they finally arrived at their destination and began their hike. However, about half-way through, rumbles of thunder tore through the forest and it promptly began pouring down rain upon the group of 11. Un-

able to rush back to the cars on the slippery dirt trails, everyone trekked it out, returning to their cars soaked and tired.

”There were many things that could have gone differently,” said Tory. “But seeing as everyone came out somewhat unscathed, we can call it a success and maybe next time we will be a little luckier.”

Peter and Tory plan on making another trip later in the fall to see the park with all the leaves changed, so look out for signs and get your packs ready!

With the new tobacco ban in place, Lizo had a need for ways to avoid smoking on Campus. In response to this, RAs Kelsey Woodcock and Hope Marshall called in their friend, Allie Diel, a nursing student, to come talk about the dangers of smoking and how to go about finding alternatives to smok-ing. More than twenty people listened to the Power Point presentation on all forms of tobacco.

“They brought up a lot of facts that I didn’t know about,” said resident Jessica Thomp-son. “I didn’t know how bad hookah was for you. Just two hours smoking it is as bad as a whole pack of cigarettes.”

Residents were very active in the presenta-tion, taking a pre and post test on what they learned.

RA Hope was very excited with the partici-pation. “Everyone who came to the program noted that they learned one new thing about the campus’s tobacco policy and found one reason to quit smoking.”

With the recent ban, it has been very dif-ficult to keep people from smoking on cam-pus. If you see anyone smoking on campus, try asking them politely to put it out. Quitting is really difficult, so try to be nice!

Suicide Prevention Month recognized in Moss, Cowan’s APA programming In honor of suicide prevention month, RAs Chris Moss and Kris Cowan put on a super secret program, gathering in the lobby. More than 20 people showed, prepared for anything, and finding themselves amid a deep discussion. The two lead-ers opened up about their history with depression and suicide, telling their in-depth stories.

“It was really cool to hear about the RA’s stories,” said resident Catherine Hunt. “When they opened up it allowed us to have a really great discussion.”

The program went on for far longer than the original time as everyone got to spill their emo-

tions and support each other through past and present situations.

Kris was very pleased with the turn out. “It was a huge success! I felt that we touched the lives of some of our residents.”

There are many people who suffer from depres-sion and suicidal thoughts. This program shows that you are not alone in this world, that you can find anyone, even your leaders, who can sympa-thize and help.

If you have been in and out of the lobby, you will probably notice the near constant ‘plink click plink clickpink’ ping pong table in use. The RCC staff observed the excitement and decided a produc-tion needed to be made of it, and so Lizo’s very first Ping Pong tournament was born.

The bracket, created by RCC Vice President, Kyle Stone, and 4th floor RA, Kris Cowan, held nearly 20 residents, who brought friends and roommates to watch as the battles unfolded.

Competitors dropped like flies until only two remained: RCA Rep Spencer Ray, and the event coordinator, Kyle Stone. In the match to the death, the two duked it out, but in the end Kyle prevailed.

“It was really great to get to put this on,” Kyle said after winning. “Plus it was really satisfying to beat Spencer. We are pretty equally matched.”

In the end, the prizes went to Spencer and Kris Cowan, the runners up in the competition, and everyone was satisfied with their lot.
