exploitation) to challenging prob-lems. Working in partnership with our customers, we trans-form complex ideas into reliable systems to rapidly provide actionable information to War-fighters and decision makers.

Northrop Grumman’s capabilities span all METOC processes:

• Sensing technology

• Analysis and prediction

• Mission tailoring

• Integration

• Visualization

• Geographically distributed   collaboration

Sensing TechnologyA world leader from “beneath the earth’s surface to the sun” environmental sensing, Northrop Grumman has extensive experi-ence in developing, integrating and sustaining critical defense and civilian ground- and satellite-based sensors and systems. These include the Defense Meteorological Satellite System and the Defense Weather Satel-lite System (DWSS).

Northrop Grumman delivered the inaugural FMH-1 standard algorithms for all federal sur-face weather observations. The company developed, integrated and commissioned the Automat-ed Surface Observing System (ASOS) for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS) and certifies its key automated weather sensors.

Northrop Grumman is the nation’s leading devel-oper and integrator of

environmental sensing systems. We are building on decades of innovation and expertise, to shape the global environmental observing systems of the future. Northrop Grumman applies tech-nologies within the Meteorologi-cal and oceanographic (METOC) community, that sense, collect, analyze and integrate distributed

environmental data, solving the toughest environmental chal-lenges for our customers. From enhancing operational situational awareness and battle-space pre-dictability, to processing satellite observations, including erupting volcanoes and wildfires, Northrop Grumman solutions protect lives, resources, and property, while helping customers gain a better understanding of the environment.

Northrop Grumman is a premier provider of command and con-trol (C2), meteorology, sensor technologies and platforms, and decision support tools. Our en-vironmental professionals are ex-perienced in all facets of METOC and C2 integration processes and apply expert knowledge of science, systems, spacecraft, manned and unmanned aircraft, sensors, and data (collection, ingestion, distribution and

Northrop Grumman understands user needs and their exacting demands for improved space, atmospheric, and oceanic sens-ing. The company is working to integrate conventional sources with future systems to better manage the data explosion from the next generation of environ-mental satellites, such as DoD Weather and the Geostation-ary Operational Environmental Satellite R, as well as unmanned vehicles and future combat systems. This includes leverag-ing Global Hawk’s capabilities to measure atmospheric tem-peratures, movement, particles, aerosols and moisture, improving climate and weather forecasting for diverse mission needs, including homeland security.

Analysis and PredictionNorthrop Grumman leads engi-neering and sustainment servic-es for major technological com-ponents of the Air Force Weather Agency (AFWA). The company develops and implements space weather applications for the Space Weather Analysis and Forecast System (SWAFS). Northrop Grumman assists in creating products that success-fully analyze and predict space weather and its impact on mili-tary and aviation operations. As prime contractor, the company assisted AFWA in implementing the real-time global ionospheric model for the Department of Defense (DoD) and continues to update and implement improve-ments to the model. Additionally, the company is at the heart of developing and upgrading sat-ellite data ingest and analysis capabilities at AFWA, process-ing meteorological data from U.S. and international satellites

and making this data available to government users, worldwide, for daily operations and mission support.

We delivered the DoD’s opera-tional Mesoscale Model Ver-sion 5 (MM5) implementation at AFWA, as part of the Global Theater Weather Analysis and Prediction System, In support of terrestrial weather analysis and prediction, Numerical Weather Prediction modeling support has continued with the Weather Research and Forecast model upgrade beginning in 2006 and continues today with the integra-tion of new ensemble forecast modeling techniques.

Mission TailoringNorthrop Grumman is a world leader in translating METOC data and products for warfighters and decision makers. The company assists the Air Force and the DoD in transforming METOC data into tactical decision aids. Partnering with AFWA, Northrop Grumman transformed the Joint Air Force and Army Weather Information Network to the modern web services based Air Force Weather Web Services (AFW-WEBS). Northrop Grumman Integrated Meteorological Sys-tem was similarly transitioned to SOA-based METOC services supporting the US Army tactical forces in contingencies around the globe for many years.

IntegrationNorthrop Grumman is firmly committed to fully integrating weather information into deci-sion cycles, at the appropriate levels of command, through our net-centric, services-oriented architecture (SOA) design.
