In 2010, UK street lighting stock in all pole heights was 7.2 million The latest figures obtained for the running costs per 8 hr day per street light is £0.26p including the energy cost based on a £0.10p a kWh and replacement of HPS bulb every 20,000 hrs. One street light with an average wattage of 150 watts, operating on average 8 hrs a day x 365 days = 438 kWh x £0.10p a kWh = £43.80 or £0.12p a day 7.2 million Street lights x £43.80 = £306.6 million + replacement of the HPS bulb every 20,000 hrs (4- 5 years) at a cost of £30.00 each = £43.2 million every year + installation cost and safe disposal The carbon emissions released by the burning of 7.2 million HPS bulbs a year based on DEFRA figures is 0.527 kG per 1kWh = 1.6 billion kG Projected LED bulb replacement and energy costs & Co2 emission reductions To provide the same lumens and warm colour as the current 150 watt HPS bulb uses in the above figures, a new direct replacement LED Corn bulb as shown in the pictures above uses just 45 watts an hour, reducing energy costs by 70% a year. With the NEW replacement LED bulb, the energy cost is reduced to £13.14p a year = to £0.036p per day based on £0.10p per kWh charged by the Utility. 7.2 million Street Lights x £13.14p = £172.6 million with a life of 50,000 hrs (10-12 years) at a cost of £48.00 each. Replacement LED bulb cost over 12 years is £4.00 Carbon emissions will fall to 490 million kG year on year. The bottom line to all UK councils seeking to cut street lighting running costs is to NOT follow Bournemouth by sending the old HPS light fixture to scrap merchants to be replaced with a more expensive all in one LED fixture nobody can service.

Lowest cost LED direct replacement for HPS street light bulbs

Below, the average running costs & Co2 emissions of a 150 watt HP sodium lamp The UK Government is committed to cutting Co2 Emissions by 80% by 2050.

In 2010, UK street lighting stock in all pole heights was 7.2 million

The latest figures obtained for the running costs per 8 hr day per street light is £0.26p including the

energy cost based on a £0.10p a kWh and replacement of HPS bulb every 20,000 hrs.

One street light with an average wattage of 150 watts, operating on average 8 hrs a day x 365 days =

438 kWh x £0.10p a kWh = £43.80 or £0.12p a day

7.2 million Street lights x £43.80 = £306.6 million + replacement of the HPS bulb every 20,000 hrs (4-

5 years) at a cost of £30.00 each = £43.2 million every year + installation cost and safe disposal

The carbon emissions released by the burning of 7.2 million HPS bulbs a year based on DEFRA

figures is 0.527 kG per 1kWh = 1.6 billion kG

Projected LED bulb replacement and energy costs & Co2 emission reductions

To provide the same lumens and warm colour as the current 150 watt HPS bulb uses

in the above figures, a new direct replacement LED Corn bulb as shown in the

pictures above uses just 45 watts an hour, reducing energy costs by 70% a year.

With the NEW replacement LED bulb, the energy cost is reduced to £13.14p a year =

to £0.036p per day based on £0.10p per kWh charged by the Utility.

7.2 million Street Lights x £13.14p = £172.6 million with a life of 50,000 hrs (10-12

years) at a cost of £48.00 each. Replacement LED bulb cost over 12 years is £4.00

Carbon emissions will fall to 490 million kG year on year.

The bottom line to all UK councils seeking to cut street lighting running costs is to

NOT follow Bournemouth by sending the old HPS light fixture to scrap merchants to

be replaced with a more expensive all in one LED fixture nobody can service.
