THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN ROCKET ROUND LEICESTER!

A SPECTACULAR PUBLIC ART EVENT THAT WILL BLAST ITS WAY ACROSS THE CITY IN SUMMER 2021. IT WILL BE THE BIGGEST LEICESTER HAS EVER SEEN!

40 giant Rocket sculptures, each sponsored by a business, will create a free, fun, family-friendly trail of discovery. This will be an important step for the recovery of our community after a di cult year.

At the end of the trail, each giant Rocket will be auctioned to raise money for LOROS to enable us to continue to care for over 2,500 terminally ill local people every year.

WE WANT YOU TO TAKE THE LEAP WITH US AND HELP US REACH THE STARS!

Each of our Rockets needs to be transformed into a work of art and we are actively seeking submissions from the local and regional arts community. Designs are welcome in any medium; traditional to new media, fi ne art, gra ti, illustration or mosaic.

Designs will be shortlisted before being presented to our sponsors. Those that are successfully chosen will then be commissioned and upon completion each artist will receive £850 in payment, as well as the opportunity to showcase their work as part of this astonishing event.

Whatever your art form, we welcome your idea to add fun, creativity and innovation to our city.

LOROS Hospice is a local charity and every year we care for over 2,500 people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. We deliver free, high-quality, compassionate care and support to terminally ill patients, their family and carers.

Rocket Round Leicester will raise over £300,000 to help us continue to deliver this care.

LOROSLOROSWe deliver care that is special and unique to each individual.

Patients and their families are at the heart of everything we do. We are here to o er a helping hand, a listening ear, and o er caring support by people that understand.

We are about life and living. It’s about making people comfortable and being there to help and support them and their family. We help people living with a terminal illness make the most of the time they have left.

Our dedicated team of 343 sta are helped and supported by more than 1,500 caring volunteers. We provide specialist care at our Hospice in Leicester, in patient’s homes, and in partnership working with our local hospitals and GPs.

It costs us £8.2 million each year to be able to deliver our services. The NHS does give us some money, but we still need to raise at least £6 million each year from our local community.

We’re very proud that 90p of every £1 received goes towards patient care.

Please help support our patients and their families at the most di cult time of their lives, by supporting Rocket Round Leicester.

Thank you

The Rocket sculpture has been specially commissioned and created just for Leicester. It is inspired by Leicester’s incredible scientifi c heritage.

WHY ROCKETS?WHY ROCKETS?

THE ROCKET IS A SYMBOL OF INNOVATION

Innovation is something that is highly valued by LOROS. At LOROS we are always looking at new technologies which may help to improve the lives of our patients and also the care given.

THE ROCKET SCULPTURE HAS UNIVERSAL APPEAL

The sculptures appeal to all ages, genders and cultures. The shape is extremely versatile and will lend itself to multiple interpretations allowing many di erent stories to be told through the design.

THE ROCKET IS SYMBOLIC OF LEICESTER AND OUR CITY’S VISION

Every day for the last 52 years, we have had an instrument in space that was built in Leicester. Leicester has been hailed the UK’s ‘Space City’ due to the development of Leicester’s Space Park.

THE ROCKET IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FUTURE

LOROS want to be fi t for the future and able to care for the people who need it the most. The Rocket symbolises our desire to be around so that future generations can access our care.

HOW IT WORKS…HOW IT A feel-good campaign we can all be proud of. Rocket Round Leicester will connect corporate, public and community partners around the city. Providing a new and uniquely creative avenue for collaboration, all while supporting LOROS; Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland’s local adult Hospice.

Businesses, community groups and education establishments are invited to sponsor a blank Rocket sculpture!

New and established artists are invited to submit designs that will transform the blank Rocket with individual artworks. Design ideas are presented to sponsors who each select their favourite.

Successful artists are commissioned to apply their designs – ranging from traditional to new media, fi ne art to illustration, gra ti and mosaic – to the sculptures.

Schools and colleges will also join in the fun, adopting and designing their own smaller Rocket sculptures while taking part in a county-wide Learning Programme. This sculpture gives an exceptional, creative opportunity to engage pupils in important topics - from environmental issues and the natural world, to citizenship, and health and wellbeing, to name a few.

After getting creative in the classroom, they will see their cosmic creations on the art trail and afterwards it is theirs to keep.

Community groups have the opportunity to work with a regional artist to decorate a Rocket with artwork to refl ect their stories. It will be displayed as part of the trail, before landing in its forever home in the local neighbourhood.

Once all the Rockets are decorated, they will appear in our streets, parks and open spaces during summer next year to form a free 10-week art trail. Residents and visitors, young and old, will explore the trail using a bespoke Rocket Round Leicester map and mobile app. These help them navigate around the city, discover new places and unlock exciting rewards and discounts provided by sponsors.

After entertaining and getting people outdoors, walking more, and sharing their stories, the out of this world sculptures will come together for a spectacular farewell event. It gives everyone a last chance to see the Rockets, meet some of the artists involved, and maybe choose one to bid for at the charity auction!

The legacy of Rocket Round Leicester continues as many of the sculptures will take centre stage at a glittering auction to raise vital funds for LOROS Hospice.

You may submit up to two designs.

You will be required to sign our standard copyright agreement for each design.

When planning your designs, they must be appropriate for public display; the audience will be wide ranging and of all ages. Designs that are overtly religious, political or sexual in nature will not be accepted. Additionally, neither corporate logos nor advertising is allowed.

We cannot accept designs which infringe on 3rd party Intellectual Property, i.e. recognisable brands, logos, personalities, franchises and characters etc.

Artists may alter the basic sculpture shape but if doing so, must ensure the fi nished work remains structurally intact. It is recommended that only artists experienced in working with fi breglass submit designs that use this process.

Remember that the public will touch and interact with your sculpture! Therefore, any attachments must be robust and able to withstand this handling (including, potentially, the weight of an adult), not be likely to cause any injury, and must be durable in an outdoor environment.

Subject to availability, a painting space will be provided for you to create your Rocket. Should you wish to paint it in your own studio you will be responsible for collection and delivery. Please be aware of the size and weight of the sculpture when considering this option.

While we welcome all art forms, experience has taught us that collage and/or sticking paper or paper-based products onto the sculpture does not prove as e ective as painting or mosaics. Please consider this before submitting your design and be aware that most of the sculptures will be positioned outside for 10 weeks exposed to the British weather.

When placed on the streets, each sculpture is bolted to a concrete plinth using fi xings. Artists must keep the base area of the sculpture clear of any attachments.

Artist materials are not provided. The use of water-based acrylic or emulsion paint is recommended, although artifi cial resin paint or two-component paint can also be used to paint or spray a design. To complete your sculpture, it must be fi nished with a waterproof, non-yellowing varnish which will be provided.

Artists will not be responsible for placing their sculptures on the streets or collecting them once the trail has closed. We do ask artists to be available, if possible, during and after the event for any touch-up work that may be required. If an artist is unavailable, another artist will carry out this work.
