ปิโตรเลียม?พระราชบัญญัติปิโตรเลียม พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๔“ปิโตรเลียม” หมายความว่า น้ำมันดิบ ก๊าซธรรมชาติ ก๊าซธรรมชาติเหลวสารพลอยได้ และสารประกอบไฮโดรคาร์บอนอื่น ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นโดยธรรมชาติ และอยู่ในสภาพอิสระ ไม่ว่าจะมีลักษณะเป็นของแข็ง ของหนืด ของเหลว หรือก๊าซ และให้หมายความรวมถึงบรรดาไฮโดรคาร์บอนหนักที่อาจนำขึ้นมาจากแหล่งโดยตรง โดยใช้ความร้อนหรือกรรมวิธีทางเคมี แต่ไม่หมายความรวมถึง ถ่านหิน หินน้ำมัน หรือหินอื่นที่สามารถนำมากลั่นเพื่อแยกเอาน้ำมันด้วยการใช้ความร้อนหรือกรรมวิธีทางเคมี
