AN accident claimed the lives of three loved ones on the Ohrigstad road Wednesday night. A grandfather and his three grandsons were in a bakkie that rolled on the R36. Only the four-year-old boy survived. One of the boys, Theophillis Ruben Makofane was a learner at Entheos Christian School. The school conveyed their condolences on their their Facebook page: “We would like to convey our deepest condolences to the Makofane family on the passing of Ruben, his brother, and his grandfather. May their souls rest in eternal peace.”This accident was a shock to the whole community as they were well loved and known to a lot of people. According to report the accident occurred around 21:00 and the road had to be closed for traffic. The case is still being investigated.• The Highlands Panorama News would also like to convey our deepest sympathy to the family during this difficult time.

D U E t o i n a d e q u a t e r a i n f a l l Mpumalanga finds itself facing one of the biggest droughts in decades. The 2016 rainfall statistics shows rivers are drying up and dam levels are falling to crisis levels.In the Lydenburg area March and April usually shows a good number of rain showers before the winter but this year we were not that fortunate. In order to prevent the disaster and unnecessary water wastage, The Department of Water and Sanitation said the fact is we are slowly running out of water and if we do not preserve the little we have now, we will soon find ourselves in a huge crisis. Between 50 and 70 per cent of our freshwater is being wasted through burst pipes, malfunctioning pumps, broken taps and reckless water use.

3 August announced as a public holiday, thus no excuses - go and vote

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma has declared August 3 a public holiday, the presidency said on Friday. This would enable all those eligible to do so to cast their votes in the local government elections that day, presidency spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga said.“Voting is a fundamental right enshrined in our Constitution. It is important that citizens are granted an opportunity to exercise this right freely. Advertising on public transport like taxis will be controlled through stricter law enforcement according to the law. The Department of Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison is encouraging all Public Transport to operate with The National Transport Act 05 of 2009 under transport operations (Passengers Transport Act 1994).It says operators must comply with the requirements of this Act. This Regulation of 2006 September stated that for every minibus or midibus that operate as a public transport vehicle, the standard of compliance is that the minibus must be white in colour with a marking of a South African flag and name and address of the owner only.No translucent advertising or logo shall be applied to the rear window of a minibus or midibus operating minibus taxi-type services, unless the material or film of the advertisement complies with the provisions of regulation 202(3) of the National Road Traffic Regulations (must not distract the view of a driver). An operator who fails to comply with these Regulations shall be guilty of an offence and on conviction liable to a term of imprisonment not exceeding three months or a fine not exceeding R5000, and the relevant regulator entity may suspend, or withdraw the relevant operating licence or permit of the operator in terms of section 79(2) (a) of the Act.

DIE afsterwe van twee baie goeie vriende van bykans 40 jaar, was die afgelope week vir baie van ons ’n reuse verlies en ’n geweldige skok.Op 18 Junie is Ludwich (Blackie) Swart, voormalige natuurbewaarder van die TPA en Mpumalanga Toerisme en Parke Agentskap, oorlede na ’n beroerte. Blackie was ’n legende en besonder goeie mens, wat help vorm het aan die karakter van menige natuurbewaarder. Hy was voor sy aftrede Hoof van Permitte, van die MTPA. Ons hartseer en

medelye gaan aan sy familie, Leonie (eggenote), Karien (dogter), Gunther (seun), suster Yolandi en hulle eggenotes en kleinkinders.Op Saterdag die 25ste kry ons die nuus dat Chris Liebenberg oorlede is aan ’n hartaanval terwyl hy en Elsa op reis was tussen Tosca en Vryburg. Chris was alom bekend in Lydenburg. Hy het by Glencore (destyds CMI) gewerk van die beginjare van CMI af en was aktief in die fotografieklub, in vliegkringe en in motorfiets en kampeerkringe. Hy laat sy eggenote Elsa, twee seuns Jaco en Christiaan en dogter Elana agter en ons rou saam met hulle. Ook ’n besonder goeie mens wat almal

om hom positief geïnspireer het. Beide hierdie manne het ’n groot rol in my eie lewe gespeel en beide was net effe ouer as ek. Ons is erg geskok en baie hartseer.Rus sag manne, ons hoop dat julle ook in julle Hemelse tuiste sal voortgaan met die goeie werk.

Usher Syndrome is one of the most common c a u s e s o f D e a f - b l indness and th i s genetic disease is sadly under-diagnosed in y o u n g c h i l d r e n . Children who are born with severe or profound loss of hearing are generally not checked for retinal visual loss and inadequate preparation is made to allow for later

loss of vision. Usher Syndrome occurs in 3 distinct forms with type 1 being the most profound deafness. The good news is that clinical trials are under way to replace a defective gene – the MYO7A gene, with a working copy of the gene in patients affected by Usher Syndrome type 1b. Retina South Africa, the patient action group for people with genetic retinal degenerative conditions, has partnered with the University

of Cape Town to identify Usher patients who may benefit from this new era of future treatments. Chris het ook gereeld met sy eie vliegtuig die wêreld verken. Dit was ’n lewe vol avontuur en hy laat fantastiese herhinneringe na.Sy gedenkdiens word hierdie Saterdag 2 Julie by die Lewende Woord Gemeente Lydenburg om 11 uur gehou. • Ons by die Highlands Panorama betuig hiermee ook ons meegevoel met die familie. Jou probleme laat jou ook wakker lê en myne lyk tans baie onoorkombaar. Die nagmerries is letterlik en figuurlik nagmerries - en soos julle weet - partykeer onthou mens dit so helder. Ek droom toe ook hoe ek om ’n groot boom loop. En daar voor my is alles wat al gebreek, gesteel of weggeraak het op ‘n hoop. Dit voel toe in die droom asof ek die Lotto gewen het. Stem julle saam met my? Hoe lekker kan dit wees om alles weer na jare terug te kry wat oor jou hele lewe weggeraak het? Daar was ‘n aansienlike stapel in my droom. Dit het amper tot in die wolke verrys. Die fiets wat se speek losgegaan het, die juwele wat agterweë gelaat is, die dosyne paar oorbelle (ek verloor dit altyd), speelgoed, klere, daar was tv’s, hartsbesittings en allerhande goed in die hoop. My pragtige juwele wat gesteel is, erfgoed van ouma Bettie en tannie Alwien. Erfgoed van my pa. En juwele wat my ma vir my van babadae af gekoop het. Ja, dit is wêreldsgoed --- maar dit was myne. Nee kyk - daaroor kan ek ‘n swetswoord laat. Soms skud ek net my kop oor goed wat kan verkeerdgaan en breek, selfs vloekwoorde beskryf soms nie die ware gevoel daaroor nie. Behalwe hierdie slaaploosheid het die ongelooflike gebrek aan padreëls my al laat rooi sien hierdie week. Stop tog net by die stopstraat. Dis nie moeilik nie. Veral die trokke. En hoorhierso, vir so 'n ou klein dorpie kan die mense darem baie verkeersreëls oortree. Nee wat, hierdie rooikop het saam met die winter baie lang ure wakker gelê. South African National Parks (SANParks) refutes the several media reports that seems to suggest that the organization is putting blame on the portion of the fence that has been dropped between the Kruger National Park and Limpopo National Park as part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park agreement. The fact is that the highest number of rhino poached is in the southern part of the park where the fence is still intact. It is equally important to note that the fence that was removed in 2004 also had no security features and it was a simple five-foot high cable fence. “SANParks is fully committed to the Peace Parks concept and thus a committed member of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park which comprises of the Kruger National Park in South Africa, Gonarezhou National Park in

Zimbabwe, and Limpopo National Park in Mozambique” said William Mabasa the Acting head of Communications in SANParks. “On 9 December 2002, the heads of state of Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe signed an international treaty at Xai-Xai in Mozambique to establish the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park which we are all committed to making sure reaches its full realization which is to afford our wildlife a bigger space on which to roam and provide economic benefits to the three countries involved,” said Mabasa. The Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA) is truly the jewel among the various southern African TFCAs currently being developed, continued Mabasa. “In 2006 the Giriyondo tourist access facility between the Limpopo and Kruger National Parks was opened. Almost 5 000 head of game have been translocated from Kruger to Limpopo National Park. This, combined with 40km of fencing being dropped, has encouraged more animals, including over 1 000 elephant and over 1 000 buffalo, to cross the border of their own accord.”“A fence will never keep thieves out of any area. The dropped fence is not the reason for the increased poaching in South Africa. Poaching is also not a unique South African problem, it is a continental, if not a worldwide, problem which needs a global approach to win. Sub-saharan Africa is losing 30 000 elephant to wildlife crime every year and what we are experiencing now is a spill over of this crime wave into South Africa” said Mabasa.As long as the demand for illegal ivory and rhino horn exists and escalates, interventions at the ground level cannot solve the problem. A multi-pronged approach addressing the entire illicit trafficking chain is the only feasible way to address organised wildlife crime. By simplifying it and putting blame to the removal of a 40km cable fence line out of the total border area of Kruger of over 400km, does not do justice to the complexity and seriousness of the challenges being faced. It is also important to note that as a result of the peace parks initiative, over R640 million is being made available for developing the Mozambique component of the Transfrontier Park until 2022. Amongst others, the funding includes support for infrastructure development, socio-economic development (which constitutes a rural development and resettlement programme to move close to 8 000 people away from the core Transfrontier Park to areas more suitable for sustainable livelihoods) as well as park management and anti-poaching operations. Without the existence of the Transfrontier Park, investments at this scale and level would simply not have been possible. Kruger National Park officials are working together with Limpopo National Park on a continuous bases and have together in the past achieved a lot of successes in their collaboration.

And sister Hyundai is third.The US study, now in its 30th year, examines problems experienced by vehicle owners during the first 90 days of ownership. According to JD Power, initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.The study shows that Kia ranks highest in initial quality with a score of 83 PP100, the first time in 27 years that a non-premium brand has topped the list. It is also the second consecutive year that Kia, which ranked second in 2015, has led all non-premium makes in initial quality.Porsche (84 PP100) is just behind in second, followed by Hyundai (92 PP100), Toyota (93 PP100) and BMW (94 PP100). Smart lurks at the foot of the table, with Fiat only one place better off.The study furthermore indicates that new vehicle quality has improved by some 6% in 2016, double the rate of improvement in 2015 and the largest increase since 2009. JD Power said quality improved across all eight problem categories measured, with 21 of the 33 brands included in the study improving in 2016 and one remaining the same.The 2016 US Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 80 000 purchasers and lessees of new 2016 vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership.The study is based on a 233-question battery organised into eight problem categories designed to provide manufacturers with information to facilitate the identification of problems and drive product improvement. THE Automobile Association has released a statement urging South African motorists to insure their vehicles.But the release also includes rather a telling statistic. According to the AA, between 65% and 70% of the 11,4 million registered cars in the country are not insured. By our maths, that means there are nearly eight million uninsured registered vehicles roaming around South Africa.Of course, the problem extends further than that. In fact, the AA estimates that up to 800 000 vehicles in South Africa are either unregistered or classified as unroadworthy. And, naturally, these are uninsured, too.“Consider that you are driving on a four-lane highway with three cars ahead of you, four behind you, and one on either side of you,” the AA posited.“If you are uninsured, five or six of these cars will also be uninsured. If you are involved in a crash with one of them, chances are neither of you will be able to afford the resulting expenses,” the Association warned.The AA urged motorists to cover themselves “adequately”.“Some people may argue that the costs of insurance are simply too high.
