he K9 Unit Lydenburg was instrumental in making a bust on illegal cigarettes. They received Tan anonymous tip and drove to the alleged

storing place early Monday morning, just outside Lydenburg on the Ohrigstad Road. A police officer said that a legal pack of cigarettes can cost up to R35 or more. These illegal cigarettes have a street value of about R20 per pack. They are usually smuggled in from neighbouring countries. Just after 08:00 the K9 Unit and Lydenburg SAPS arrested suspects and found two vehicles on the premises. The two vehicles found were a silver Ford Territory and a white Mercedes Vito. The value of the cigarettes is well over R1 million. The vehicles had petrol slips and other evidence that they had been driving through Louis Trichardt (Makhado) on Sunday night. There is a strong suspicion that the whole load was smuggled through from Zimbabwe. The cigarettes were found in outbuildings on the farm.~ By Michelle Boshoff

NORMAALWEG word die woorde “Gee my krag” as ’n versugting gebruik deur iemand wat worstel met dood, ellende of lewensmoegheid. Nie in hierdie geval nie. Nee, ek verwys na elektrisiteit - LEKTRIEK!Met die beurtkrag kan ons nogal byhou by die koerant. Om die kragopwekker twee keer per dag vir twee ure per keer te laat loop is wel ’n beslommernis, maar dit is

doenbaar. Maar ons probleme is nie beperk tot beurtkrag in Viljoenstraat nie. Twee weke terug was die krag (buiten beurtkrag) vir twee volle dae af in Viljoenstraat. Dit het tot gevolg gehad dat in plaas van so 20 uur per week, die kragopwekker nou 30 uur moes hardloop teen sowat R35 per uur. Dit is ’n allemintige R1 050 vir die week. Die rede: Uitgebrande skakels of drade by die minisubstasie op die hoek van Jansen en Viljoen, reg by ons kantoor.Uiteindelik is dit reg en ons ploeter met beurtkrag aan, teen R 700 per week. En so wraggies, laasweek Woensdag toe

is die krag weer af. En hy bly af. Teen eenuur Donderdag sit ek hierdie week se Outoppie en skryf met die gedreun van die enjintjie in my ore.Glo weer kabels gebrand iewers in Viljoenstraat. So ons praat al weer van 30 uur en R 1 000 plus vir die week.Maar jy behoort ook jou kragopwekker elke 50 uur te diens, olie te tap ens. Dit gebeur dus nou, as jy hom rek, elke twee weke.So tussen Eskom en Thaba Chweu kos hulle my nou ’n addisionele sowat R5 000 per maand, maar ek moet my kragrekening betaal, en hy is nie kleiner nie. Wonder hoe werk dit?Gee my krag!

HOORHIERSO, met Valentynsdag wil ek ook ’n eiertjie lê. Eerste liefde, niks so soet en intensief nie. Só moet mens van baie hoor wat dit al ondervind het.Jou eerste liefde is mos jou grootste. Dit maak die grootste indruk op jou. Sien, op Hoorhierso is daar nie 'n lewende wese wat te veel oe en aa oor die liefde nie. Miskien is ek nog nooit hard genoeg oor my kop geslaan daarmee nie. Maar tog maak ek altyd die regte aanmerkings as iemand my van hulle pragtige verhouding vertel. En ook hoe hulle ontmoet het. Moet tog bieg, met die ontmoet deel konsentreer ek bietjie harder. Mens weet nooit, dalk vang ek 'n paar idees waar om my beterhelfte eendag te ontmoet. Let wel: eendag en ek weet nie van die beter nie!Nou die dag vertel 'n dame my van haar interessante ervaring. Vreemde emosies, vertel sy, het weer by haar opgekom toe sy met die man praat met wie sy in 1972 uitgegaan het. Die man het haar die trekpas gegee na die eerste week wat sy begin skoolhou het. 'n Ryk boeredogter het hom gesteel.Dit het by haar uitgekom dat die man kanker onder lede het en sy besluit toe om hom te skakel. Sy kry toe nou die dag 'n sms waarin hy om verskoning smeek vir destyds se hartseer.Eintlik, vertel sy ook, het hy niks verkeerd gedoen nie. Jy besluit mos maar self wie moet jou lewensmaat wees. En sy wonder: Kan dit moontlik wees dat na 30 jaar dieselfde liefde gevoel by jou opkom? Sy was 22 jaar oud.Ou-liefdes het mos 'n manier om by jou te spook. LELIEVLEI het verlede week gehelp met herstelwerk op die publieke pad visserye toe. Met die betrokkenheid van die VF+ en die Highlands Panorama Nuus, het van die inwoners van Lelievlei ingespring om die diep sloot oor die pad, wat deur die stadsraad se kontrakteurs veroorsaak is, en nou wegspoel omdat dit nie gerehabiliteer is nie, op te vul. Volgens Jean Muller, Bestuurder van Lelievlei het hulle heelwat werklose mense wat oor kundigheid en vaardighede beskik. Lelievlei word baie goed deur die gemeenskap ondersteun met voedsel en lewensmiddele.Hierdie is maar ’n klein blykie van waardering van hulle, deur in die gemeenskap terug te ploeg met hulle arbeid.

Hulle het in die verlede al gehelp om water aan te ry na Mashishing, om vullis weg te ry ensovoorts.Hulle het ook genoem dat hulle bereid is om besighede te help met slaggate voor hulle besighede / huise. Al wat hulle nodig het is ’n vraggie grond en ’n sakkie sement of twee. Dit sal ook gaaf wees as hulle ’n bietjie loon vir hulle werk kan kry. Ons moedig mense aan om saam te staan en met Lelievlei hande te vat met die slaggate. Ons weet dit is die stadsraad se werk, maar intussen ly ons self skade met ons motors en dinge in die raad gaan kwalik verbeter, so kom ons help mekaar.

THE new Ford Focus RS is here, and the big news is, it is all-wheel drive. That’s right, Ford’s brought the rear axle into play to better manage the superhatch’s power. And there’s plenty of that this time around: the RS is packing more than 235kW.Under the bonnet you’ll find the 2.3-litre Ecoboost four-pot from the latest Mustang, although it’s had a fair bit of work done to it. The fundamental structure’s the same but the cylinder head’s been upgraded and the cylinder block liners toughened up. An altered intake design and a bigger-bore exhaust help it inhale and exhale more freely. In the boost department, the turbo’s been given a larger compressor and is paired with a bigger intercooler. The radiator has grown too, to help keep everything cool.Ford quotes a ‘projected’ power output of 235kW and promises a burbly soundtrack to match RS models of old, complete with plenty of snap, crackle and pop on the overrun. It’s hooked up to a six-speed manual gearbox and a beefier clutch than the Mustang to cope with the increased torque.All that and start/stop. Ford RS buyers, that most famously ozone-conscious bunch, will be pleased to hear that carbon dioxide emissions will fall by approximately 20 percent compared with the last RS.The way it shuffles torque around is a big part of what it’s about. As well as migrating power from front to rear, it can also vary torque side to side on the rear axle. That side of things is looked after by twin electronically controlled clutch packs on each side of the rear drive unit.As the driver turns in, torque is pooled to the outer rear wheel, a trick which ‘virtually eliminates’ understeer, Ford claims. Neutral and

adjustable handling on the limit was the brief given the chassis engineers, and, tantalisingly, the ease with which the car can be steered on the throttle at a track day.It’s not just engineered for showboating though, as driven neatly and tidily it’ll be able to corner with the best of them. This

car could seriously upset the AWD hot hatch apple cart; the likes of the pricey Mercedes A45 AMG, very competent VW Golf R and upcoming Audi RS3 could be made to look quite silly.Firmer suspension than the Focus ST, with less forgiving tuning for the spring rates, bushes and anti-roll bars. The dampers have two switchable modes, the firmer of which is intended for use on the track.The whole shooting match rides on 19-inch alloys and 235/25 Michelins developed for the car. If you’re really serious about taking the car on track, semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cups are an option.As suspected, this is shaping up to be quite a car. THE 2015 iteration of the segment-busting Nissan Juke hasn’t just been given more in-your-face styling but the range now includes the new 1.2 DIG-T engine, and an upgrade in specification.Like it or loathe it, the Nissan Juke has found more than 500 000 homes across the globe since its global introduction in 2010 and SA has maintained a near-300 unit average a month since its introduction, selling close on 12 000 units.As far as the styling changes go the 2015 Juke gains refreshed bumpers, lights and side mirrors and newly designed and larger wheels. From the front the three levels of lighting have been given even more prominence with the uppermost-lights being completely redesigned to feature daytime running lights, while a new grille and gets a bolder SUV-style Nissan badge.New and bigger alloy wheels complete the package and have been inched up from 16- to 17-inch on all but the 1.2 DIG-T Acenta model and from 17- to 18-inch on the Tekna models. The rear now has a wider number plate area, redesigned tail lights, and a new diffuser and rear air dam to give it a more purposeful stance on the road.The funky Juke interior has always been an agreeable place to spend time and in the 2015 upgrade there is a new premium treatment for the centre console around the I-CON system which controls vehicle set-up and performance settings.Entry-level Acenta models now have Bluetooth phone, cruise control with speed-limiting capabilities, Stop/Start technology and climate control. All models in the range also have vehicle dynamic control (VDC) and six airbags, key elements to the Juke’s five star Euro NCAP rating.New side mirrors in the Tekna specification integrate wide-angle cameras that link to the front and rear camera to offer 360 degree visibility when manoeuvring in car parks. Nissan also say the Juke’s luggage storage area is now 40 percent bigger. This applies to all models, except the 4WD model, which has to house a rear differential and multi-link rear suspension system.Engine wise its good news for the Juke. The 1.2 DIG-T replaces normally aspirated 1.6, meaning the entire engine range is turbo charged, with 4WD and XTronic transmission available on selected models. The 1.2 DIG-T engine features a turbo and intercooler and offers 85kW at 4 500 rpm and 190Nm of torque from 2 000 rpm to 4 000 rpm, which means that compared with the engine it replaces, the new 1.2 DIG-T offers up 5.6l/100 km, a figure made possible by the standard fitment of Stop/Start technology.The 140kW 1.6 DIG-T is unchanged from before, as is the 81kW 1.5 dCi turbo diesel, with a

RUMOURS have been circulating for some time that Nissan was plotting a Le Mans car with a difference. How could it be any more different than the Deltawing of 2012, you ask? There were whispers of it being front-engined, of the rear tyres being narrower than the fronts, of a bizarre driveshaft arrangement.Now it’s been confirmed, in a Nissan Super Bowl TV advert of all things, and it’s just as weird as people had speculated. Due to compete in the top LMP1 class in the World Endurance Championship this year, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the car is called the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo, and granted, it is a bit challenging to look at, but as race cars go, there’s some radical stuff going on under the skin.Unusually for an LMP1 car, it is front-engined. Even more unusually, it’s front-wheel drive. That’s right. The engine (a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 petrol unit, mounted longitudinally behind the front axle) powers the front wheels. The rears are driven too, electrically. A flywheel kinetic energy recovery system harvests energy from the front axle and can send power to all four wheels, but is mostly biased toward the rears.Interestingly, the front wheels are actually wider than the rears, with 14-inch wide tyres at the front and 9-inch wide tyres at the back. The engine’s exhausts exit ahead of the cockpit, and as one clip in the slightly bizarre Superbowl ad shows, can belch flames with the best of them. This should be interesting for the drivers at night.In total, Nissan says there’s more than 930kW (1250 horsepower) on tap from the engine and electric system combined. It will make its first appearance on April 12th 2015 at Silverstone, the first round of the World Endurance Series. It’ll have its work cut out to take on the might of Toyota, Audi and Porsche.Le Mans is where it’s at for technical innovation at the moment; the Toyota uses a V8 petrol engine, the Audi a V6 diesel and the Porsche a V4 petrol engine, so there is no shortage of variety, but the GT-R LM Nismo is something different again. HAVING a beer or a glass of wine before a meal or drinking cough syrup before hitting the road could see you fined or tossed in jail as the Department of Transport has proposed a zero blood-alcohol limit.A proposal to cut to ZERO the current maximum alcohol level of 0.05g/100?ml of blood was published earlier in January 2015 in the Government Gazette. The legal alcohol level was dropped from 0.08g/100ml in 1996.Those who wish to comment on the new bill and drink-driving restrictions, have until February 27 2015 to respond as the draft bill has yet to go through the parliamentary process.ZERO TOLERANCEThe original National Road Traffic act reads: "No person shall on a public road- (a) drive a vehicle; or (b) occupy the driver's seat of a motor vehicle the engine of which is running, while the concentration of alcohol in any specimen of blood taken from any part of his or her body is not less than 0.05g/100ml, or in the case of a professional driver referred to in section 32, not less than 0.02g/100ml."The amended bill reads: "No person shall on a public road (a) drive a vehicle or (b) occupy the driver's seat of a motor vehicle the engine of which is running, while THERE IS concentration of alcohol in any specimen of blood taken from any part of his or her body."According to the draft bill, then the section governing the blood-alcohol amount/limit has been omitted, meaning if you're found driving with ANY concentration of alcohol in your blood, you can be charged.HOW WILL THIS REDUCE ROAD DEATHS?Although welcomed by road safety organisations the law, if enforced, could have dire financial consequences for restaurant owners managers, not to mention drivers. A 2015 Retromobile show in Paris is attracting classic-car collectors from all over the world for one of the biggest vintage displays in history.According to Associated Press, a treasure box of 60 rusting cars was discovered after spending 50 years languishing in some farm outbuildings.The collection includes a vintage Ferrari California Spider, a Bugatti and a very rare Maserati. They were found gathering dust and hidden under piles of newspapers in garages and outbuildings on a property in France.The cars, says AP, were collected from the 1950's to the 1970's by entrepreneur Roger Baillon who dreamed of restoring them to their former glory and displaying them in a museum but his plans were dashed as his business struggled.Hence the sale of the cars, some just shells and others pretty much intact but in great need of a rich buyer's tender loving dollars.The auction was held on Friday 6 February forcing the sale of about 50 vehicles.Wheels24.co.za
