JUST over a year ago Rosie Morrison made front page news around the country and the internet couldn't get enough of her bathing in a pothole with her bikini. What was very interesting was that this pothole was literally on the front step of the Thaba Chweu Municipality. Although they say the R36 is a provincial road. The R36 runs from Lydenburg to the Bambi Crossing (to Nelspruit). The Badfontein Road is in the worst condition ever. After the 'Pothole Bathing' every mine in the area promised to make quick work of fixing the road. Residents of Badfontein can also vouch for the fact that certain truck companies use the road more than others. They don't even give the cars/ passenger vehicles right of way. Other motorists need to get out of the trucks way very quickly because the trucks will literally drive them off the road. Rosie Morrison from Lydenburg Guest Farm was armed with a shower cap, book, glass of wine, and shampoo. Can anyone say our situation has improved? Our new town motto must be – just keep swimming/ uhhh bathing.... It just seems that the Thaba Chweu Municipality does not care. If you take the evidence into account, or rather the evidence that the whole town's infrastructure is falling into disarray...

Everyone knows that the streets can literally be described as one big pot hole. Over the Festive Season a lot of visitors commented on how bad our roads are... and yes, we are aware of it. Some of the comments on Facebook were:“Yes...our bathing pools have become more accessible we now have them in the town...bigger better and family-sized”. “Nothing has changed or improved since then! Looks like the Kimberly se gat had babies and they moved to Lydenburg streets!!!”“Ja dit het daar kan nou 2 mense saam bad op n slag”. “As jy jou gat wil sien gaan ry die gatpad!”. “Nope their quick fixes never last past the rainy season.”. “Yes, it did improve..... now there are also extra pools for the kids and inlaws to keep her company! THE Lydenburg municipal dumpsite is once again accessible to the public. The top site (across the railway line) has been bulldozed and opened up for normal dumping. The access road just past Lybasol has been cleaned and residents are urged not to dump their refuse along the road. The rest of the roadsides, after the right turn are still in a terrible condition, together with the large area up to the railway line, that will need rehabilitation. If you dump garden, building or household refuse, please continue up this road, cross the railway line and dump on top of the main site.

waarmee ek na die nuutste haatspraak op Facebook kan kyk, maar waarmee ek my gat af sukkel om te bel.Kyk na ons nuutste motors. Vergeet elektriese ruite. Nee, die ding parkeer namens jou. Hy rem as ’n taxi voor jou injaag. Hy hou jou in jou baan op die pad. Daar is ses soorte staal in sy konstruksie.Skole in Gauteng beweeg weg van papier af. Kry tablette. Wat die kinders in ’n shack sonder krag moet herlaai.Kan jy ’n vlieg makliker met jou tablet as jou koerant doodslaan? My motorfiets loop mooi sonder ABS en ek kan self my petrolbakkie se vergasser stel. Hoeveel jong mense weet wat is ’n vergasser? Ek tuimel steeds geweerdoppies op die ou manier, terwyl ’n ultrasoniese masjientjie dit in ’n uur doen.Al my LED ligte werk mooi, gebruik min krag en hou, maar daar is spookskadus.Demmit, ek word nou oud!

Dis gewis, ry moet jy ry.Dis hoekom almal mor sodra 'n prysverhoging aangekondig word. Nou kyk, almal moet begin kla oor die petrol se prys. Die motorryers, vragvervoerders, landbouers en ook al die mense wat paraffien gebruik. Ek lees ook dat die petrolding nie eers ons skuld is nie. Die hoë internasionale oliepryse speel ook 'n rol. Plus die politieke onrus in die Midde-Ooste en Amerika se swak dollar.Ek het nou besluit om 'n wil-mor-taakmag in te stel sodat almal moet saamstaan. Want soos ou drommels hou ons altyd ons bekke as iets ons nie aanstaan nie. Die sêding dat ''n toebek 'n heelbek' is kan jou nie altyd help nie. Dus wil ek hê dat die wil-mor-taakmag klaagliedere moet skryf. Die petrol-ding gaan maak dat ons hik en snik elke keer as ons by 'n vulstasie stilhou, niks aangenaam daaraan nie. Anders moet ek maar 'n 'n elektriese karretjie invoer (sal ook nie werk nie, want my tweepunt prop is stukkend).Wens dat karre op sweet kon loop. Almal wat die duur petrol betaal sweet meer as genoeg om die prys by te bring. Dan sal die sweet wat van ons aangesig drup die moeite werd raak.

I find myself in the privileged position of having something (useful) to say, but what?I suppose I shall say something about languages. It’s universal, it’s easy to find something to say about, and you can muck it up as much as you please. It’s idiot-proof (note: only a special classification of idiocy, mind, but more about that later).I know an obscene amount of curse words in many languages. Isn’t it ironic how the first words you learn in a new language are usually the naughty ones? For instance, I grew up in a small seaside town, which was perpetually bombarded with emigrants from all sides of Eurasia. I had Taiwanese, Swiss, Polish and Italian friends. Needless to say, the words I knew best in either Mandarin, Swiss German, Russian and Italian were all words not found in civilised conversation. It might be “cute” to throw the odd foreign profanity around when you’re (relatively) safe and sound in your own country, in your own house, with your own friends and family. It might even be considered appropriate, especially if you’re the jackass among the lot of your friends and like to make your mates laugh (and them think of you as a complete buffoon). Now, imagine you’re in a far-off land, for whatever reason, and you run into some bad luck while abroad. Ostensibly, some local ambles along and now you try to communicate (inanely, I might add) to him the trouble you’ve run into. With the local’s disapproving expression cast upon you, you eventually quit your unintelligible ramble and instead try to use hand signals to portray your need of his assistance. You find yourself in a wee boat up a certain, unpleasant-smelling creek,

because you are trying to explain that a tyre on your crappy rental car has a puncture might be interpreted by him as you wanting a go at his wife. Which is all fine and dandy if you happen to be in Amsterdam, but what if you find yourself in a not-so-understanding country, such as Turkey or (perish the thought) Italy? Whoops, there goes the paddle.On a more serious (while I’m still lucid) note, an understanding of languages (more importantly, fluency in at least your own and one other) is essential. Very little can be achieved without communication. There is the odd interaction which only requires exchanging bodily fluids and maybe a bop or few, but that’s all I know of that can be done without so much as a single uttered syllable. Linguistic breakthrough, isn’t it?

An odd month or so back, a nice, unassuming newspaper editor asked me whether I would be interested in writing a column and I pounced on the opportunity. Me? Being asked to write a column? Oh, you shouldn’t have! No, really, you shouldn’t have ...Because now, dear Me will have to pansy up and dust off my not inconsiderable vocabulary, and actually do my dearly departed parents some justice by applying the knowledge they’d imparted on (read: beaten into) me.For now, though, I shall give you quarter from my linguistic lamentations and let you get back to whatever it was you were doing before you happened upon my enlightening little feature. Perhaps, finish reading the rest of the newspaper?

Johan Vercueil , LAPSAR skryf: LAPSAR wil hiermee almal bedank wat so mildelik bygedra het gedurende Desember 2014 en Januarie 2015. Desember was baie moeilik by LAPSAR aangesien ons alreeds meer as dubbel die honde gahad het as waarvoor ons hokke gehad het. Die goeie nuus immers is dat dertien honde gedurende hierdie tydperk goeie huise gekry het. Van die diere is selfs Pretoria toe. Ons is weer oorvol op die oomblik en diereliefhebbers kan gerus kom inloer indien iemand 'n hond wil aanneem. Ons opregte dank aan Nissan Lydenburg, Hyundai Lydenburg, Spar Lydenburg, Pick & Pay Lydenburg, Die Care and Outreach groep van Lydenburg Methodiste Kerk, Mar t ins Bef ragnisondernemers in Lydenburg & Pretoria sowel as al die ander persone wat gehelp het. Die diere was so bederf en gepamperlang toe Martins Begrafnisondernemers opgedaag het. Elke hond was gebad en gedip. Al die komberse was gewas en hulle het selfs gehelp om hokke skoon te maak met hoedruk spuite.. Al die diere het gesmul aan heerlike

vleishappies. Van naels knip en skeer tot strikkies in die hare was aan die orde van die dag. Die jong klomp het met die honde gespeel. Baie baie dankie hiervoor! Ons is trots om deel te wees van LAPSAR en almal se bydraes het dit moontlik gemaak om heelwat diere te kon uitstuur na goeie huise toe. Dankie vir al die sms'e wat u aanstuur

om te vertel hoe dit met die diere gaan. Ons waardeer dit opreg! Die Here seen u!

Lede van die Longtom Fotografieklub het baie moeite gedoen om foto's van die voorgestelde onderwerp helder kleure in fotos vir die maand byeenkoms te neem. Na 'n baie moeilike kompetisie het Chris Liebenberg gewen met sy pragfoto. Rentia Olckers het ook vir ons kom vertel hoe mens foto’s neem van kos.In ons ope-afdeling met verskeie onder afdelings het Lanie Visser as wenner uitgestap met die pragtige foto van die voël.Ons rig 'n uitnodiging aan al die deelnemers aan die Highlands Panorama koerant se foto kompetisie/publiek om by die klub te kom aan sluit. Landsdiens was eers die Landbouklub genoem. Hier is een van die ou Landsdienswapens en me. Van der

Merwe se erebaadjie wat ook al haar medaljes op het,soos die Goue Protea.

Hier is oom Okkie in die Landsdiens tydskrif “Vreugde deur Vlyt” in die 1942 uitgawe. Die eerste druk was reeds in 1941. Dit was ’n inligtingstydskrif

waarin jeuglede verslag kon doen oor kampe en klubaktiwiteite. Foto’s bo en onder uit die boek

Me. Hannie van der Merwe, van Lydenburg, staan by die toekenning wat sy van die Landsdiensbeweging SA

ontvang het op hul 100ste verjaardagviering - die Facta Non Verba Toekenning.

Dit is “vir diens en ondersteuning aan die Landsdiensbeweging”.

Me. Van der Merwe was een van drie lede bo 80 jaar op die viering in Stellenbosch maar was die enigste

persoon wat hierdie gesogte toekenning ontvang het. Die Landsdiensbeweging het ook ’n boek uitgegee oor hul geskiedenis van die afgelope 100 jaar (1914-1915).

Ontstaan van Landsdiens in Lydenburg:

Die toekenning is aan haar oorhandig met die 100 jaar verjaardag van Landsdiens Suid-Afrika. Die groot eeufeesviering het in Stellenbosch in Desember plaasgevind en oor die 800 Landsdienslede van die verskillende klubs in Suid-Afrika het dit bygewoon.Me. Van der Merwe het ook op die 75ste-verjaardag van Landsdiens die Goue Protea ontvang vir haar getroue diens en opoffering. Sy was een van die stigerslede by die landsdienstak op 4 Maart 1964 by Laerskool Klipspruit. Hierdie skool is ’n paar kilometer buite Lydenburg op die Badfonteinpad. Sy het na haar aftrede as onderwyseres by Laerskool Klipspruit in 1990 steeds elke week getrou die Landsdiensklub besoek by die skool en gehelp om kampe te reël.“Ons het 24 kinders in die skool gehad. En daar was toe ook 24 kinders in die Landbou-tak. Landsdiens was voorheen bekend as dieLandbou-tak. Die kinders het 10 sent betaal vir hul lidmaatskap. Die was groot pret en die begin van hierdie Landbou-tak het die hele skool aan die gons gehad. My man, Jan, was seker meer opgewonde oor die Landsdiens as die kinders en het my al die jare daarin ondersteun,” het sy vertel. Die Klub se eerste streekskamp was in April 1964. Die kinders, sommige ouers en offisiere het per trein gereis na die F. Tomlinson-kampterrein. Me. Van der Merwe het vertel dat die kinders 40 sent vir hierdie kamp betaal het. Hulle het soveel padkos ingepak, dat hulle op die eerste stasie (Bultkop sylyn) al reeds amper alles opgeëet het. Die 40 sent het die treingeld, etes by by die kamp, uitstappies en dies meer ingesluit.Al hierdie herinneringe is steeds opgeskryf in haar notuleboek. Haar Landsdiens-vriende, wat nog gereeld kom kuier, vra altyd dat sy die boeke nader trek dat hulle weer oor die ‘lekker ou dae’ kan gesels. Die Laerskool Klipspruit se Landsdiensklub het altyd trots aangehoor dat die kwotastelsel vir lede nie op hulle van toepassing was nie. “John Farrel , ’n Landsdiensbeampte, het gesê al die skole en provinsies

het kwotas van hoeveel kinders kamp toe kan kom. Maar Laerskool Klipspruit het 24 leerders en al 24 leerders is daar. Kwotas was nie vir ons van toepassing nie,” het me. Van der Merwe gesê. “Ek kan niks spesifiek as ’n hoogtepunt uitlig nie. Daar was deur al die jare soveel meelewing, liefde en ontsettende groot strewes van Landsdiens: God die Skepper, Liefde vir Medemens, Liefde vir die Natuur en Liefde vir Arbeid. “Met die Facta Non Verba toekenning het die vorige nasionale leier van Landsdiens, Koos Alberts, my hand gevat en gelei na Wouter Stemmet, die huidige nasionale leier, wie toe die toekenning aan my oorhandig het. Die 100 jaar viering in Stellenbosch was ’n onvergeetlike ervaring. “Ek wil niemand uitsonder om hulle te bedank vir al my jare by die Landsdiens nie, want almal was spesiaal. Die ouers het ons met elke stap ondersteun, by klubkampe, met vervoer, met kos en om elke byeenkoms spesiaal te maak. Dankie aan my jare-lange Landsdienskollegas: oom Lampies Lamprecht wie die Laerskool Klipspruit se klub gestig het, John Farrel, Falkie, Coert Smit, Jan de Beer, Francois Marais, Koos Alberts, Hans Gründling, At Odendaal, Andries Conradie (voorligtingsbeampte in Lydenburg), tannie Raaitjie Bouwer (Petro Botha van Bernina se ma) wie altyd die heerlikste potte kos gemaak het en elke kind wie my pad gekruis het. Me. Hannie van der Merwe is ’n bekende dame in Lydenburg en is by baie verenigings betrokke.Landsdiens is in haar bloed en mens sal ver gaan om iemand te kry wat soveel vir die liefde van die saak gedoen het. In die Eeufeesboek staan: “Sy is die lewende bewys van die waarde wat die Landsdiensbeweging en sy liefdes tot enige mens se lewe kan byvoeg. Tannie Hannie is een van die mees posi t iewe Landsdiensleiers wat ooit by Landsdiens betrokke was. Haar bydrae tot uitbreiding van Landsdiens en verryking van kinders se lewens onder haar sorg en leiding, sal moeilik met reg nagemaak kan word.” ~

Daar word dikwels heelwat meer spandeer as wat die voertuig werd is en die industrie sê dat mens dan die voertuig oorkapitaliseer.Die punt is egter dat met die huidige ekonomie baie van ons nie ’n motorskema het nie en geen belastingvoordeel uit ’n nuwe motor kan trek nie. In daardie geval maak dit sin om ’n netjiese stel wiele te herbou vir ’n fraksie van ’n nuwe se prys. Jy kan bv. ’n goeie ou tweedehandse 4x4 bakkie aanskaf en restoureer vir sowat R 120 000. Jy moet egter altyd die realiteite van so iets besef. Jy ry nie ’n nuwe voertuig met ’n waarborg nie. Jy is nie “by” met die nuutste statussimbool nie. Onderdele raak skaars. Versekering is ’n probleem, want jy gaan altyd onderverseker wees. ONS het op 18 Julie 2013 die vorige Touareg getoets. Hierdie week kyk ons na die nuwe Touareg en jy moet hulle langs mekaar trek om die verskille te sien. Evolusionêre klein verbeterings en dit is goed so. Jy verander nie alles wat werk nie. Dit is ’n premium SUV in die boonste klas. Ons toetsvoertuig was die 3.0 V6 TDI Bluemotion, propvol met die nuutste tegnologie. Hierdie 180 kW, 550 Nm voertuig met 8-spoed outo ratkas en vierwiel aandrywing is ’n bul! Die Touareg is nog meer gelaai met elke denkbare luukse en veiligheidskenmerk as die vorige een. Daar is nou voor, agter en kant kameras (area view) wat jou wys as iets aankom as jy by ’n nou uitgang met beperkte sig wil uit. Die kameras is onafhanklik ook deur die tikskerm beheerbaar. Die klankstelsel is uitstekend. Daar is plek in die paneelkissie om jou iPod in weg te steek terwyl jy daarna luister. Daar is ’n multi verstelbare vollengte sondak. Die sitplek is lugverkoel en verwarm met waaiers. Die stuurwiel kan jou hande verwarm. Dit het multi funksies en kan in-en-uit-op-en-af stel. Die sleepstang vou elektries in en uit. Daar is dubbelsone klimaatbeheer, togbeheer wat aanpas by verkeer en self rem waar nodig, Bloutand, raakskerm info stelsel, ritrekenaar met banddruk monitering en al die normale funksies, lugverkoelde paneelkissie en elke ding. Daar is ’n ekstra 12V kragpunt in die konsole en ’n 230V wisselstroom punt agter op die konsole vir jou skootrekenaar. Die luikrug agterdeur werk elektries en sy hoogte kan gestel word vir die persoon se gemak en lengte. Die Touareg kan homself parkeer of jou ten minste help om te parkeer.Daar is ABS Plus, HBA, ESP, EDL, EBD, ASR en as ek reg getel het, 11 lugsakke. Sewe bakwerkkleure, vier bekleedselkleure en vier soorte wiele is beskikbaar.Op die pad is hierdie steeds ’n fenomenale voertuig. Wanneer jy stilhou met jou voet op die rem, skakel die enjin af om brandstof te bespaar. Haal jou voet van die rem af en hy trek weg. Die TDI V6 maak ’n allemintige 180kW se krag met 550Nm (3.5 ton sleepvermoë). Dit versnel van 0 tot 100 in sewe sekondes en het ’n topsnelheid van 218 km/u. Verbysteek gebeur in ’n oogwink. Remme en stabiliteit is skitterend. Die enjin is doodstil en die 8-spoed ratkas skakel soomloos oor. Daar is tikfunksies op die rathefboom en spaantjies agter die wiel as jy die ratkas self wil beheer. Daar is geen windgeraas nie en die voertuig voel asof dit uit graniet gekap is, so stewig is dit. Die buitestilering is konserwatief, maar as jy mooi kyk is daar chroom en swart vinnetjies en vlerkies wat nie op die vorige model was nie. Die rooster is heelwat verander en volg nou die Volkswagen korporatiewe beeld na. Dit is mooi.

FORD’s new Fusion is the most technologically advanced Ford vehicle ever introduced in South Africa. It's new Pre-Collision Assist with Head-Up Display detects a potential collision and automatically applies the brakes if the driver does not respond to warnings. The system uses information from a windshield-mounted camera and radar in the bumper, and checks it against a database to help distinguish people from typical roadside scenery and objects. If a collision becomes imminent, the driver first receives an audible

and visual warning.

Should he not respond, the system shortens the time required to apply the brakes by reducing the gap between brake pads and discs. If there is still no response from the driver the brakes are applied automatically and the vehicle speed is reduced. The car can also apply automatic braking to mitigate or avoid a collision with a vehicle ahead. Active City Stop operates at speeds of up to 40 km/h.

Radar technology further enables the new Distance Indication feature and Adaptive Cruise Control technology. Distance Indication provides a visual interface to inform the driver of the time gap to the vehicle ahead. Adaptive Cruise Control automatically maintains a chosen distance from the vehicle ahead. The camera supports Lane Keeping Aid, which applies steering torque to guide the Fusion back in to he

lane if unintended drifting towards the lane marking is detected. Traffic Sign Recognition provides the driver with the latest detected speed limit, cancellation signs and overtaking restrictions via the instrument cluster display.

New Fusion petrol engine options will include the 1.5-litre EcoBoost and two 2-litre EcoBoost engines, as well as a high-powered 2.0-litre TDCi diesel engine that delivers 132kW and 400 Nm of torque. Combined with Ford's Active Shutter Grille system, which provides aerodynamic benefits, these new engines deliver low carbon dioxide emissions and excellent consumption.

Fusion will debut Ford's new integral link rear suspension configuration for improved refinement and more dynamic performance. The car has electric power steering, and an optimised ABS system also helps reduce stopping distances by more than one metre from 100 km/h.

An industry-first application of hydro-formed high strength steel is used to produce the A-pillars, B-pillars and roof rails. A new magnesium inner tailgate structure delivers a weight saving of approximately 40% compared to a traditional steel equivalent.

Also helping deliver body structure weight savings of up to 115kg for the 1.5-litre EcoBoost model is a recycled Front Energy Absorber designed to meet pedestrian protection requirements. "The weight saved during development has been carefully re-invested into fuel-saving features such as aero-shields and Auto-Start-Stop technology; comfort and convenience features; and a stronger and safer body structure.
