10:00.''History will judge us by the difference we make in the lives of our children.” With these words of beloved President Mandela, ThabaChweu Executive Mayor, Cllr Mike Ncongwane, welcomed guests to the recent opening of the Skhila crèche, funded by the Glencore Lydenburg Smelter.It all started way back in 2011 when members of the Skhila community approached Ward 14's councilor, Farhad Essack. Skhila had a primary and a high school but no pre-school facility. Working mothers had to make use of informal arrangements at private homes to take care of their youngsters.Essack, assisted by Anton Crossley, ex schoolmaster James Mapanga and TCM's public liaison officer Siewisha, approached Glencore's Lydenburg Smelter (then Xstrata), for help. At the time, General Works Manager Mr Conroy vd Westhuizen recalls, it was difficult to motivate the spending of more money on community projects. “G lencore has made cons iderab le investments in Mashishing, Kellysville and in infrastructure maintenance for Lydenburg as a whole. Having contributed R12m to the building of the Mashishing Multipurpose Community Centre, we had to put the request on hold. But we saw the dire need for a formal pre-school facility.”Essack and his team persuaded the Thaba Chweu Municipality to donate 5 900 sqm of land, well situated close to the two schools, and Crossley started drawing up plans. In May 2014 Viscon Construction, in a joint venture with Shabby Construction from Mashishing,

started building.When scoped for the job, their guideline from Glencore was: “Only the best!” but, as with all projects of this nature, it became a project of love. The neat structure, comprising of two fully furnished classrooms, each with junior ablution facilities and store rooms, a large open plan kitchen, reception area, first aid room, guest toilets and disabled toilet,

additional storage rooms and covered stoep area, was completed by end September. The crèche, built with the vision to accommodate 80 children, has the capacity to be added onto in a modular way. Solar geisers and kitchen equipment rounded off this brand new haven for Skhila's little ones, palisade fenced for safety. “We are proud to be here and to hand over this crèche to Thaba Chweu

Municipality and the Skhila community,” Van der Westhuizen said at the colourful ceremony held in December. ”We believe that prosperity should spill over onto the community. 'n Flamink is 'n mooi een met sy sierlike lang nek. Maar as dit skeef trek lyk hy ook maar heel krom. Vir 'n sekonde flits 'n kameelperd met 'n seer nek ook deur my gedagtes. Dit moet 'n l-a-n-g pyn wees. Ek het die humor gesoek deur my pyn en lyding. Tog het flamink en kameelperd nie die stywe nek verbeter nie. Maar opstaan sal ek moet. Met een oog het ek die wekker beloer want kopdraai is nie 'n opsie nie. Teen 07:00 was die kans vir terugsak in die bed min. Dis nou of nooit. Vir hoofpyn drink mens gou 'n pil. Maar nek-dinge is anders. Dis seerder as 'n stamp op 'n maermerrie en 'n stamp teen jou gottabeentjie (ja, 'n gottabeentjie). Tandpyn kan ook nie so erg wees nie, ek glo ook nie 'n maagkramp nie. Dis 'n dowwe pyn wat agter in jou blaaie begin en krampe trek tot in die verflenterde nek. Die nek staan nie 'n kans teen soveel aanslae nie. Nie lank nie dan is jou hele boonste-helfte amper in 'n spasma. 'n Massering sal help, maar wie het nou tyd voor werk vir so iets. En om dan in die kar te klim, wat nog te sê van aantrek is onmoontlik. Dis dan wanneer jy party kledingstukke 'n ruskans gee vir die dag.Heelwat later as die pyn vervaag het raak jy rustig. Dan is die hele kaboedel heel amusant en wonder jy waaroor jy so gekla het. Veral as die dokter se gawe inspuiting sy verlam-werk begin doen.

Hierby staan ek egter: Broerders en suster… 'n pyn in die nek is iets om mee rekening te hou. Al is dit net om flaminke en kameelperde voor jou geestesoog te sien. ~ Michelle Boshoff

Fanus (Scuba Rebels)vier sy 1000ste duik!

Fanus Potgieter, die instrukteur by die plaaslike duikskool in Lydenburg, Scuba Rebels – het die afgelope Desember sy 1 000ste duik gedoen! Dit is nogal baie ure onder die water as mens gemiddeld maksimum van so 50 minute per duik uitwerk. Gewoonlik, soos met baie ander sportsoorte, is daar sekere mylpale en natuurlik om jou 1000ste duik te doen, vereis die ander duikers gewoonlik dat jy dit doen soos jy die dag gebore is….Vir Fanus was 'n bietjie genade gegun, hou ook asseblief in gedagte dat sy familie saam hom geduik het, en as Nicole wat net 14 jaar oud is, hom so moes sien, sou sy sekerlik vir sielkundige behandeling moes gaan. Daarom is besluit om die duik vir hom so interessant moontlik te maak.

Om mee te begin, het Jaco hom met bietjie mercurou gekleur. Die eindresultaat was 'n rooi nek en rug, twee rooi knieknoppe en 2 strategiese rooi vingers. Maar dit was nie genoeg nie – hy is gedoop met rou eiers op die kop en bietjie sand bo-op om dit mooi af te rond! En wat is 'n spesiale geleentheid dan nou as jy nie 'n boodskappie kan skryf nie? Gelukkig het iemand 'n skryfding naby gehad en Fanus se lyf was maar die papier!Baie geluk Fanus, dit is verseker iets om op trots te wees. THE hits just keep on coming from Ford at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show. After the new Ford GT stole the show, Ford whipped muscle car fans into a frenzy by taking the covers off the new Shelby Mustang GT350R.As the press bluster proclaims, the Shelby GT350R is the most track-ready production Mustang to date. The regular Mustang gets a five-point-oh litre V8 Coyote engine, but the enlarged flat-plane-crank 5.2-litre V8 in the Shelby GT350 comes equipped with ‘over’ 373kW/542Nm. This means the Cobra-emblemed pony car boasts the most powerful naturally-aspirated Ford V8 engine.Sadly, Ford hasn’t detailed specific power figures just yet, but as the reference to ‘track-ready’ suggests, the GT350R isn’t just about power. It is a lightweight version of the GT350 – built as a homage to the original GT350 Competition Model.So the suspension is unique to the R with specific springs, anti-roll bars, lower ride height, and a set of carbon fibre lightweight 19-inch race wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber. Each wheel saves 6kg of unsprung weight at each corner versus an aluminium wheel.The lightweight diet translates to the interior and spec list, too. By ditching the rear seats, satellite navigation, interior trim, air conditioning, radio and rear view camera, the R saves around 60kg versus the GT350 Track Pack. The car has then been outfitted with a limited-slip Torsen differential with a 3.73 axle ratio for improved cornering performance.Aesthetically, you’ll no doubt notice the snarling bonnet vents to assist with cooling for the enlarged engine and a large rear spoiler, and front- and rear-diffuser combo to reduce front lift and induce rear downforce. THE updated Kia Picanto has been unveiled in South Korea. Although the car’s South African specification might differ from these seen in the pictures, it still gives us a pretty good idea what to expect when the car arrives on our shores later this year.Powering the Kia is either a 1,0-litre, three cylinder petrol engine, or a 1,0-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged unit. The former is said to develop 58 kW and the later 79 kW.There are talks of a five-speed manual gearbox, as well as a four-speed automatic transmission. The turbo derivative comes with a CVT instead of a normal automatic transmission.The turbocharged engine is claimed to use 7,1-litres per 100 km. This is a relatively high consumption figure. However, it has to be said this figure comes from the South Korean government fuel economy standards.From the pictures we can gather that the front of the car and to a lesser extent the rear of the car, have received a makeover. THE 2015 Detroit Motor Show has been dominated by supercars so far, but Hyundai has now delivered a notable concept car to the North American show. Hyundai calls the vehicle the Santa Cruz Crossover Truck Concept and it is the firm’s vision of a tough off-road bakkie with a bit of ‘urban adventure’ motor show spirit thrown into the mix for good measure.

We certainly like the look of it. We like the thinking behind it because we’ve been banging on about the viability of a Hyundai bakkie for years now and Hyundai’s absence in the lucrative bakkie market is certainly getting harder and harder to ignore. We even think the Santa Cruz name is an apt take on the Santa Fe naming convention of the larger SUV from the same brand.

At the reveal of the new concept car, Hyundai America’s Mark Dipko intimated that this vehicle would be no load carrying work horse. He thinks young buyers in search of a capable, yet stylish utility vehicle don’t have a lot of options these days that suit their work professionalism in the week and need for outdoor pursuits on the weekends.

Hyundai decided not to release any specific dimensions on the Santa Cruz, saying only that the concept is around the same size as a ‘small crossover’ – suggesting it is more for recreation than commercial work, and could potentially slot into the sub-1-tonne bakkie segment if it ever does make it to production.

Styling wise, the Santa Cruz is mostly motor show bluster, with its bold, chunky shapes and familiar hexagonal, honeycomb grille. LED fog lamps gain sufficient attention upfront in unison with the ornate headlight treatments, while rear-hinged ‘suicide doors’ give it the impression of being a two door. 22-inch wheels shod in Michelin rubber fill the wheelarches with bravado and beneath them you’ll find fluorescent yellow-green Brembo brake calipers – a-la Porsche 918.

The concept’s power comes courtesy of a 141kW/406Nm 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine matched to an all-wheel drive system called HTRAC. If the Santa Cruz is an exercise in gauging response for a Hyundai bakkie, we hope the response is all the company was hoping for. Hyundai, please don’t tease us, just build it.Topcar.co.za

IT seems this year will be the year of the crossover-coupé-SUV. Following the unveiling of the Mercedes-Benz GLE63 AMG, an update on the Jaguar F-Pace, Volkswagen has followed suit with its Cross Coupé GTE.It has to be said that this is not the first time Volkswagen has given us a glimpse of an upcoming SUV-coupé concept. Back in 2013 the company showed us the Crossblue Coupé concept and last year it confirmed that its new seven-seater SUV will be built in North America.However, this Cross Coupé GTE, shown at the Detroit Auto Show, is an all-wheel drive, plug-in hybrid. This is only a concept car at this stage, as the production of the larger, seven-seater SUV is planned to start at the end of 2016.This is the third SUV concept shown by Volkswagen, and according to the company it illustrates the variety of models which could be built on the company’s

m o d u l a r transverse matrix (MQB) platform.The Cross Coupé GTE is powered by a 3,6-litre V6 petrol engine and t w o e l e c t r i c motors (one at the front, one at the rear). The total ou tpu t o f the system is 265 kW. Top speed is 209 km/h and the dash to 97 km/h can be reached in 6,0 seconds. There will also be five different driving modes, ranging from E-Mode, Hybrid, GTE, Offroad and Battery Hold / Battery Charge.
