John 3:16 It was after the civil war in Nigeria. Most of the food came from disaster relief agencies, like the Caritas Organization or the Red Cross. From time to time my mother would be watching us eat our meal, even though it was very little and small, but she had none to eat. I remember asking her if she would not eat and her reply always was, “I am not hungry.” Sometimes to evade my curiosity she would say, “I have eaten.” She walked miles to get food for us and would come home looking very weak and tired. She would call us together and share the food among us. I really believed her, that she was not hungry and I wondered at the super-woman she was. I once told my friends that my mother doesn’t eat and she was never hungry. How could she have given her life for her children? I didn’t connect the dots until the stories of the war survivors were shared one day in our family hut, and she narrated how she walked miles to get food for us without eating or drinking for days, to make sure that we had something to eat. She was afraid that hunger would take us from her. So she would get to the refugee camp for food, each time

making sure she got from the officials the next camp, the time and the day. The fear to keep us alive gave her the chronic ulcer that took her life eventually. Long hours of walking, many days without food and the fear of unknown had its consequences on her. She did all that, that we might live. I remember with teary eyes, her claim that she was not hungry so that we could survive and grow up and be successful. I read this verse of the gospel of John (John 3:16), what love can do and the extent love can go. Whenever I read this passage of the scripture, “For God so love the world that he sent his only begotten son to die, so that we might live,” I thought of my mother’s intention to save us and not herself. Today we have the opportunity to sacrifice for one another, please do not procrastinate.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Do you feel God‘s call to share your faith with others? Have you thought about

becoming a catechist for our “Children’s Liturgy of the Word” on Sunday mornings? A catechist is a person of faith who responds to that call, and passes on the traditions and teachings of our Church to others. Our “Children’s Liturgy of the Word” allows our children to be in a focused environment that opens their hearts and minds to hear and to respond to God’s Word in an age appropriate manner.

(Rite of Christian Initiation

of Adults) Are you an adult seeking

baptism? Or were you baptized Catholic as a child but have not

celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?

This program is a process of

spiritual and education formation through a conversion of mind and

heart. It is marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the parish community. It is open to

all who genuinely seek, by God’s grace to live their lives in the

Catholic Christian faith.

Our next informal gathering is TUESDAY, JULY 11th at

7:00 p.m. in the Parish Ministry Center

Baptism of School-Age Chil-dren If your child is seven years or older and unbaptized, we provide the Rite of Christian Initiation adapted for children. Please call Mary Kane at (408) 296-1193 ext. 104 for more information.

The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance.

COMMUNITY MINISTRY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It is often heard that today’s observance is an “idea feast,” and that it is somewhat difficult to grasp its meaning. Other great solemnities, such as Christmas and Easter, have an easily grasped core. Yet, even though the Trinity is at the heart of our faith, firmly declared in the Creed since the Council of Nicea in 325, we are used to having people shrug and say, “Well, it’s a mystery.” Perhaps it is more helpful to think of this as a “relationship feast,” since it unveils our deepest identity. Dorothy Day was a great social reformer, pacifist, and ardent lover of the Trinity. When people told her that she would certainly be canonized one day (the process is indeed underway), she protested dismissively by remarking that people were raising a fuss just because she was not afraid to talk about God. She loved the Trinity, and treasured the traditional icon for the feast, also known as “The Hospitality of Abraham,” depicting the three angelic beings seated at a table tilted toward the viewer and laden with bread and wine. For her, the Trinity revealed the heart of the Catholic life, three C’s if you will: community, communication, and communion. That was not an “idea” for her, but what it means to be created in the image of the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
