Stewardship The first International Philosophy Conference was organized and held in Bigard Seminary in 2002. I was appointed the co-coordinator. We created a team and appointed leaders in each team group. There were three languages presenters could use in presenting their papers: English, French and German. We posted labels all over the arena so that people would join their “lingua franca” without asking too many questions.

The first coordinator called me to visit the groups and help appoint a secretary who would write down and report to the larger group at the end of every session. I went to the French-speaking group and asked them to pick a reporter/journaliste for their group. Then I went to the German-speaking group I told them to pick a reporter/korrespondent for their group. I am sure I looked very funny, because I can only speak English, but I looked up what I wanted from them, and communicated it to them using sign language, but they grasped what I meant.

When I got to the English-speaking group, the first coordinator was there already waiting for me. He suggested I should appoint someone who has a good command of English and possibly a Briton or an American. He looked over my shoulder at a young Chinese man who was standing behind me, making notes on a piece of paper. The coordinator told me not to appoint the Chinese man because of the language barrier.

I appointed a white guy, presuming he is from England or the USA. He spoke good English with little or no accent. It was during his introduction that we discovered he was from South Africa. I would say he did very well in his job as the group’s reporter, but in his report he missed a very important issue raised during their discussion, and guess who raised his hand to point out the omission? The Chinese man.

Everybody was looking at the Chinese man as if he was the bad guy. He came up to the microphone. My coordinator was whispering to me something like, “What language is he going to speak?” I did not have the answer, because I had never spoken to him, believing he could not speak English. So everybody waited for the language dysfunction. From the microphone, he spoke in English for 15 minutes, with impeccable accent and grammar, and with a great amount of wisdom and intelligence.

My coordinator looked at me, I looked back at him and he said to me, “We have failed in our stewardship by judging this man by mere appearance.” Today, the first reading warns about the abuse of stewardship; the second reading talks about prayer and impartiality of the stewards, and Jesus’ call of accountability in stewardship. Such wise words! Fr. Gerald

Presented by: St. Justin Stablemates and Ladies Guild

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its

dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and

responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner

makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism,

weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals.

We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and

Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a

registered, active and contributing member.

So, are you a registered parishioner?

If not, please consider registering. Registration forms

are available in the Parish Ministry Center or online

at www.st-justin.org

The adult choir has begun regular Thursday evening rehearsals in preparation for Christmas. If you would like to join in the fun, please see Lillian (at the piano) after any Sunday mass or contact her at [email protected], 408-296-1193 x112.

The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance.

COMMUNITY MINISTRY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Customs surrounding the naming of babies are interesting, and over time the Church has tried to offer some motherly advice to direct parents in this necessary chore. The ritual book used for baptism from the sixteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries advised priests to guard against giving ridiculous or pagan names to babies consigned to their ministry. In 1666 the diocesan ritual of Bourges in France was even more exacting, telling the priests to see to it that boys were named after male saints, girls after female saints, and no one got named after a festival. Yet, records from that very diocese in later years shows a few babies named “Toussaint” (after All Saints Day) along with other creative expressions. In Spain, no one has ever hesitated to name babies after festivals, especially girls after Our Lady, and so there are names like Concepción, Asunción, and of course Dolores (after Our Lady of Sorrows). In Italy and Spain is it likely that a child will receive the name of the saint of the day of its birth.

Today’s rites of initiation for adults and infants urge the giving of a Christian name, and in the case of an adult whose given name expresses a pagan or unseemly idea (Baal and Whiskey come to mind), there is a formal rite during the catechumenate for the giving of a Christian name. In such a case, it would make sense for the change to be registered with civil authorities as well. For all Christians, the idea of having a heavenly patron to pray to on life’s journey is reason enough to pay attention to this treasure in our tradition. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Jubilee Year of Mercy

September 18, 2016 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mercy is one thing, malpractice quite another. Why, then, does the defrauded master in Jesus’ parable praise the devious steward? Jesus shows by example how to sanctify material goods: by placing all our resources, indeed our very selves, at the service of others. No matter how costly such service, or how minimal the return, such charity is the wisest investment, yielding a reward that is literally out of this world. For Amos and Jesus, authentic worship of God demands practical charity toward our neighbor. Paul, too, declares that the only worship acceptable to God is offered by a community rich in charity. Liturgy must be matched to life, “lifting up holy hands, without anger or argument” (1Timothy 2:8). This Jubilee Year of Mercy challenges us to live as “children of light,” as devoted to self-sacrificing Service as “the children of this world” (Luke 16:8) are to serving themselves, as enthusiastic for God’s kingdom of justice as we are about less-enduring treasures. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J.
