Development

Two People Went Up to the Temple Walking through the seminary for almost a score was a very tough thing to do. Sometimes I was on the brink of expulsion, and sometimes it was at the point of I can't take this anymore; I want to go home. I looked back and thanked God that I survived and became a priest, but the experiences of the institution never went away from my mind.

It was 1991 when we came back from summer break, the long vacation we call it in Nigeria. 100% of the seminarians were living in the seminary dormitory. So the first day is always chaotic and rowdy. A lot of luggage would be outside the dormitory waiting to be examined and searched before the owner would take them into the dormitory.

Sometimes you would go to the bathroom to use the toilet. Then return to wait your turn for the screening. A lot of boxes look familiar and similar. That was my final year in the high school, and I have never had any problems with my luggage. I always tag my box with a piece of cloth to identify it from other boxes.

I came to the school president and handed over the list contents that were in my box. He looked at it uninterestingly and said I should open the box. That was the first problem. I

couldn't open the box because the number I was using is not a matching number. It was a joke at the beginning until the time started counting. The seminarians behind me were agitated, started making comments and the school president suggested that I should step aside to sort myself out and figure out how to open the box.

Finally, I could not and normally the solution is to take me to the principal's office to await for anybody who must have misplaced his box too. While the principal was asking me about the trademarks of my box, another young boy came in crying with a box that looked like mine. The principal is too familiar with this kind of case. So he tells the kid to try his keys on mine, and I should try mine on his. We did and the boxes open. The principal would always say, "Two people went up to pray, one justified the other not." He said as an older student I should be wiser and smarter to know my bag after six years. The freshman was allowed to go Scott-free. We the first Christians should not be too sure of ourselves, we should be humble enough to give room for our imperfections, so God can find a space in our hearts to forgive us and have mercy.

Parish Ministry Center Please keep our candidates in your prayers. They will celebrate the Rite of Welcome at the 5:00 p.m., Saturday, October 29th Mass, after their day of retreat.

RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 25th at 7:00-8:30pm in the PMC. Come with any questions that you may have about faith, religion, and the Catholic Church. This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with the community. This process is centered on the Sunday readings and includes attending Mass. For those who are spiritually prepared, they will receive the Sacraments of Initiation, (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil.

CLOW (Children’s Liturgy of the Word) During the 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Sunday Masses, children are dismissed to the Parish Ministry Center Chapel for an age appropriate Liturgy of the Word. The children return to church during the Presentation of the Gifts.

HELP WANTED As you know, the heart of Community Ministry is our volunteers. We are presently looking for more help in our Food Pickup department. We pick up food at Lucky’s Grocery store every morning, we pick up donations at Target on Monday, Wednesday and Friday early afternoon, we pick up food from the Second Harvest Food Bank on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and we pick up bread from Sara Lee Bakery on Tuesday afternoons. We are especially searching for Bread Run help but would like to add to our volunteer base to spell those who are doing the other food pickup runs as well. Outreach Dinner Our next Outreach Dinner will be taking place on Sunday, October 30, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in our Parish Small Hall. All Senior Citizen Members of our Parish are invited, along with a guest, to this meal followed by BINGO.

Food & Diaper Collection Most of you are aware of the Community Ministry Collection Barrels that are located in our Church. During the month of October, we will continue to request canned Soup, Pork & Beans, Chili, Macaroni & Cheese and Tomato Sauce. We are also in need of Baby Food (Fruits and Vegetables) as well as Baby Diapers (Size 3 – 5). These are items that we do not receive often from the Second Harvest Food Bank. Please feel free to drop donations in the barrels in the Church, the barrel in the Foyer of the School or bring items to the Parish Office.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Needed For those of you who have back yard fruit trees with an over abundance of fruit and/or gardens with vegetables please consider donating what you can to Community Ministry. The fruit and vegetables are a welcome addition to the food that we distribute to those seeking assistance.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Imagine the frustration of bishops who work strenuously over their ad limina reports, directing study committees, assembling data, honing the texts, traveling to Rome “to the threshold,” only to have it all collapse into a fifteen-minute group meeting with the pope. More than a few have grumbled at the weight of this “treasure” from our tradition, yet from the pope’s vantage point, they are essential to his ministry.

Pope John Paul II recalled his own experience as the Bishop of Kraków, visiting with Pope Paul VI in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The memory of those individual visits caused him to strengthen the format, assuring each of the world’s 2,744 bishops a privileged fifteen private minutes with the pope every five years. If you wonder what the pope does all day, the thought of dealing with five hundred bishops a year and reading their detailed reports on diocesan life should help fill up the calendar. Pope John Paul II used to say that he approached each individual meeting with the personal goal of learning something new about the Church, and his lively interest made the visits immensely worthwhile. The content of the private meetings remains under a privilege of secrecy, or as Cardinal Theodore McCarrick once said, “You’re only supposed to quote the pope if he tells a joke.” —Rev. Jubilee Year of Mercy

October 23, 2016 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Today’s Gospel graces us with a beautiful prayer that can make every day of our lives a jubilee of mercy: “O God, be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13). Religious Israelites despised the tax collector who prayed it, for collaborating with Gentile occupiers and handling currency that bore the “divine” emperor’s graven image. But the Pharisee’s long-winded self-congratulation, mixed with self-righteous condemnation, was no “prayer” at all. “The Pharisee . . . spoke this prayer to himself” (18:11, emphasis added). Praying the tax collector’s simple, sincere, succinct cry for mercy acknowledges our own sinfulness, and “welcomes” other sinners as brothers and sisters with whom we can identify, even empathize, echoing Pope Francis’ famous comment about not being the one to judge. Indeed, the tax collector “went home justified” (18:14), that is, restored to God’s friendship, for God’s mercy is not prize achieved but gift received. “Let your prayer be brief: for tax collector, prodigal son, and dying thief were all reconciled to God by a single phrase!” (Saint John Climacus, 7th century). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Pope makes “Mercy Friday” visit to home for the Children

ROME (CNS) -- Continuing his monthly Year of Mercy visits to people in particularly vulnerable situations, Pope Francis spent an afternoon Oct. 14 at Rome's SOS Children's Village.

The village, which includes five houses, attempts to provide a home-like atmosphere for children under the age of 12 whose parents cannot care for them.

A maximum of six children and a house mother live in each of the houses at the village.

According to the Vatican press office, "The boys and girls, accompanied by staff from the center, showed the pope the village's green space, which has a mini-soccer field and a small playground. The children showed the Holy Father their rooms and their toys, and he listened to their stories and stayed for a snack with them."

When Pope Francis announced the Year of Mercy, he said that he would try each month in private to fulfill one of the works of mercy. Since December, his Mercy Friday visits have included spending time with migrants, the aged, at a recovery community for former drug addicts and at a shelter for women rescued from human trafficking and prostitution. In September, he visited the neonatal unit of a Rome hospital, then went to a hospice, spending time with people who are dying and with their loved ones. The Knights of Columbus Fr. Joseph Geary Council of St. Justin and St. Martin parishes will be conducting its annual fund raising drive to benefit people with intellectual disabilities the weekend of Oct. 22nd - 23rd. Council members and family members will be asking for donations after the weekend Masses outside the church. The funds are raised for the Special Olympics and Parents Helping Parents organization who both help individuals with disabilities. Any contributions you can make will be greatly appreciated.
