Patience for a Good Harvest God’s supremacy is clear in the reading from Wisdom. God is all-knowing, just, and powerful. Our hearts, thoughts, and actions are clear to God before we even know them. Even with incomprehensible power, God is patient. The words of Wisdom show us how God tempers justice with mercy and how God’s actions teach us to be patient, fair, and hopeful.

Paul encouraged the Romans to be patient through the trials of this life. The fretting is really not worth the effort when compared to the glory God has in store for us. We are saved in the hope of what is unseen, and we need to be patient in order to receive God’s promise of heaven. Even when we lack patience, the Spirit helps us and gives us the heart to hope, wait, and pray.

Jesus tells a parable about wheat and weeds in Matthew’s Gospel. After planting good seeds of wheat, an enemy came along to the field and spread weed seeds. When the plants popped through the soil, the workers were upset to see so many weeds and wanted to pull them out.

The owner encouraged the workers to be patient—to let them grow together until the harvest. Whatever weeds were left, the workers were to bundle and burn.

All three readings today challenge us to be patient. That’s a tall order for a culture immersed in satellite dishes, fax machines, mobile phones, the Internet, and compact discs filled with volumes of information. Often we are in such a hurry that we don’t take the time to look at all the aspects of a situation. Our hurry causes us to judge quickly. We may judge other people, or judge a case, coming to the conclusion that it does not warrant our time. Patience, however, gives us time to do God’s work among the wheat and the weeds. Rather than appraise the weeds as evil and lost causes, we are shown by God’s example to wait patiently and lovingly for the final judgment that belongs to God alone. Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment in all its

dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and

responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner

makes things much easier when it is time for infant Baptism,

weddings, when asked to be a Baptismal or Confirmation Sponsor and even funerals.

We are often asked to provide affidavits for Baptismal and

Confirmation Sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a

registered, active and contributing member.

So, are you a registered parishioner?

If not, please consider registering. Registration forms

are available in the Parish Ministry Center or online

at www.st-justin.org

COMMUNITY MINISTRY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For centuries, the only Eucharistic Prayer we heard as Western Catholics was the old Roman Canon, usually recited in a low voice by the priest, in Latin. By the 1940s, many Catholics were learning to follow along with the actions of the priest by means of a bilingual missal, with Latin on one side and English on the other. Drawings of the priest’s position at the altar, moving from one side to the other, or bowing or standing with uplifted hands at the center, helped the readers stay on track. The Roman Canon is a long prayer, and since it was done every day for every occasion, priests had a way of galloping through it. Even though long, its structure is fairly simple, with the consecration and sacrifice clearly marked out. Sadly, this surviving prayer had triumphed over many treasures of our tradition that emphasized other dimensions of Eucharist. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy in 1963 did not call directly for new Eucharistic Prayers, but that direction was inevitable. Discussion began almost immediately, and by 1967 the Vatican approved three new Eucharistic Prayers. In 1974, the Congregation for Worship unveiled the experiment of two Eucharistic Prayers for Masses of Reconciliation, and three for Masses with Children. At last, a period of creativity and enrichment had begun. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Have you ever wondered who does the flowers for the Church? Have you wished to learn how to arrange flowers?

We have an opportunity for you to be trained to help the Flower Committee. The Flower committee arranges flowers for the Church

every week. You can volunteer to be on the committee, and be paired and trained for flower arrangements, so you can become an independent

flower arranger. We need more volunteers! Usually we do flower arrangements on Friday afternoons or Saturday mornings. We set up a schedule about every 6 months, and you volunteer for a good day for

your schedule. St. Justin’s pays for the flowers, and you pick them up at Fuji’s or Mt. Eden and then arrange them. All of this will be covered in

training. If you are interested in joining the committee, please contact Louise Sumpter at 408-348-7734 or by email

at [email protected]. Thanks for considering becoming a flower committee member!
