The Call As many of you know, I am the mother of four boys, each who swam on a year around swim team from the age of five through high school. And yes, that was a lot of swim meets in 100-degree weather as well as in the pouring rain. At one swim meet, there was even ice on the starting blocks! I remember being at a meet with one son, Jonathan when he was in second grade, and cheering and encouraging him at the top of my voice as he swam his race, (along with every other parent of a child in this race.) Jonathan, was a breaststroker which enables the swimmer to hear the crowd more than the other swimming strokes of fly, backstroke, and freestyle. After the race, I remember his coach was exasperated with me and said “stop yelling for Jonathan, he hears your voice and then he doesn’t hear mine!”

Throughout Sacred Scripture, there are stories of people who hear God’s voice. Here are just a few examples from the Old Testament:

God called Abram to leave the land of his father’s house and go to a land that God would show him…Abram went as the Lord directed him. (Gen 12:1-4)

When Samuel went to sleep, the Lord came to him calling out: Samuel, Samuel! Samuel answered, Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” (1 Sam 3:10)

“The word of the Lord came to me, (Jeremiah)” saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,…a prophet to the nations I appointed you.” (Jer 1:4-5)

And in the New Testament:

“The shepherd opens the sheepfold for his sheep and the sheep hear his voice, as he calls his own sheep by name…the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice.” (Jn 10:3-4)

In today’s Gospel reading, we hear proclaimed the call of the first disciples. As Jesus walks by, he calls two simple fishermen, Simon Peter and his brother Andrew, and says “Come after me, and I will make you the fishers of men.” (Mt 4:19) Jesus continues and calls the sons of Zebedee, James and John, “who immediately left their boat and followed him.”(Mt 4:22)

So what did the first disciples of Jesus leave behind? They left behind their livelihood of fishing, they left behind their families, and they left behind their possessions. They did this because a disciple’s response to God’s call is to obediently follow Christ. So how will we know when we hear God’s voice calling to us? And how will we respond? How do we learn to recognize anyone’s voice? When we download multiple songs, and listen to them repeatedly, after a while, we recognize whose voice we are listening to. We can learn to recognize God’s voice by spending time each day in prayer, reflection, and reading Sacred Scripture.

As we begin this New Year of 2017, let us spend ten minutes a day with the Lord, listening for his voice, and let us also reflect on what we need to leave behind, so that we can be obedient to God’s voice and follow Christ.

GENERAL INFORMATION

(Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

Are you an adult seeking baptism?

Or a baptized Christian seeking the full communion of the Catholic church?

Or perhaps a baptized Catholic who wishes to complete initiation in the

sacrament of confirmation?

This program is for adults who are seeking baptism, or were baptized

Catholic but have not celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and

Eucharist. This is a process marked by liturgical rites that are celebrated with

the community. This process is centered on the Sunday readings and includes attending Mass. For those

who are spiritually prepared, they will receive the Sacraments of Initiation,

(Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil.

Call the office at (408) 296-1193 ext. 104 to begin answering your questions.

Do you feel God‘s call to share your faith with others? Have you

thought about becoming a catechist for our “Children’s Liturgy of the Word” on Sunday mornings? A catechist is a person of faith who responds to that call, and passes on the traditions and teachings of our Church to others. Our “Children’s Liturgy of the Word” allows our children to be in a focused environment that opens their hearts and minds to hear and to respond to God’s Word in an age appropriate manner. To find out more about this essential ministry, contact Mary Kane, [email protected].

COMMUNITY MINISTRY TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION It’s still months away, but parish ministers, especially if they are involved in the catechumenate, have their eyes on Lent and the Easter Triduum. Until fairly recent times, the last few days before Easter were shaped by an awareness of the Passion, but the faithful were left to their own devices about how to engage with these mysteries. A thousand years ago, the Easter Vigil as a solemn and central moment of initiation had vanished. By the early 1950s it was a minor moment in parish life, celebrated on Holy Saturday morning, usually with only the priests and a handful of invited guests. Most people understood it as necessary only for blessing the paschal candle and preparing the Easter water. People who were children during World War II sometimes remember that the weekly noontime test of the air-raid sirens on Holy Saturday signaled the end of Lent. Today, of course, we see Holy Saturday as entirely within the paschal fast, and hardly the time for children to be tearing through the plastic grass looking for jelly beans and chocolate eggs. These memories point to a total collapse of the once-central liturgies of the Christian year. This impoverishment of the liturgy was mostly an accident of history. The root cause was the loss of Lent as a time focused on the final formation of catechumens for the Easter sacraments. By 1880, scholars began to piece together a vision of what once had been, and slowly, at first in a handful of monasteries in Europe, pieces of the tradition were rediscovered and celebrated. —Rev.
