Life-time Achievement Award for our fellow-Sindhi
Dr. Shanti M. Shahani recieving Life-Time Achievement Award from the
President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Patil at the Annual convention of st
“Endocrine society of India” on 1 . December 2011 – for her Pioneering
work in Endocrinology. Dr. Shahani, former Prof. of Endocrinology at
TNMC & Nair Hospital is now Hon. Consultant to Bombay Hospital
and Sir H. N. Hospital.

Dr. Shanti M. Shahani has been one of India's leading
Endocrinologists for many decades.
In October, 2011, she was honored by the 'Sindhi
Medicos Club' with a 'Life-time achievement Award' in
memory of late Dr. L. U. Kirpalani.
stOnce again on 1 . December, 2011 she received
another 'Life-time achievement Award' from the
Endocrine Society of India at their Annual
Convention in Pune at the hands of the President of
India, Mrs. Pratibha Patil.
D r. S h a n t i S h a h a n i i s H o n . C o n s u l t i n g
Endocrinologist to the Bombay Hospital and Sir
H.N. Hosp i ta l . Ear l i e r, she was Prof. o f
Endocrinology at the T. N. Medical College and Nair
Hospital for over 2 decades.
She completed her M.D. in Bombay Univ. Thereafter,
she went to USA on an International Grant for a Post-
Doctoral fellowship in Endocrinology at Columbia
Medical Center, N.Y. for 2 years. She acquired Clinical
training and Laboratory expertise for Hormonal
Tests.
After returning from U.S.A. in early sixties she joined
the Nair Medical College and pioneered the Speciality
of Endocrinology by starting a Clinic, a Laboratory
and teaching at Under-grad level. Her achievements
by way of Publication and presentation of Clinical and
Research Data in this field were widely recognised.
She became the recipient of a large Research grant
from the Ford Foundation of US $1,25,000, to
develop this new Specialty. In due course, further
Research grants were received from WHO, ICMR,
Deptt. Of Bio-Technology.
With these Funds Dr. Shahani was able to develop
infrastructure such as manpower, high-tech
Laboratory Equipment, animal house and all
necessary Research facilities. Her endeavours in basic
as well as clinical research brought recognition to the
field of Endocrinology as a Super Speciality in an
Academic Institute.
She traveled widely both in India and abroad to attend
Conferences in Endocrinology and Infertility. Her
interaction with leading Scientists & Clinicians
helped her in improving her clinical expertise &
investigative Methodologies.
She was awarded Sr. Commonwealth Fellowship in
1972 in Deptt. Of Endocrinology at New Castle.
In 1975 she received WHO travel award to visit
Endocrine Centers in Cornell N.Y., Wayne State Univ.
and Kansas Medical School
Dr. Shahani was a Founder Member of Endocrine
Society of India and became it's President during
1980 &1981.
She also became a Member of Expert Panel of Indian
Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and P.G.
Institutes like All India Institute of Medical Science
(AIIMS), and many others.
She is a Recipient of several Gold Medals, Awards,
& Orations. She has contributed over 80 Scientific
Papers in National/ International Medical Journals. &
also chapters in Medical Books
She is married to Mohan Shahani, who is an engineer
and a Management consultant. He is a Past President
of Rotary Club and also of The Institute of
management Consultants and had received the award
of Fellow of the Institute of Management
Consultants.
Dr. Shanti and Mohan are thus glowing examples for
our young Sindhis aspiring to earn laurels in their
chosen Professions in future.
