The black man standing in the arena was an affront to Der Fuehrer's authority. The scene was the 1936 Olympic Games held in Berlin, Germany. The black man was Jesse Owens of The Ohio State University

representing the USA. He was aptly called "the fastest human alive." Der Fuehrer was Chancellor Adolf Hitler, who had recently risen to power championing an arrogant theory that his "Aryan race" of "supermen" would conquer the world. In implementing his theory, Hitler began systematically to stamp out the Jews in a bitter expression of prejudice and discrimination. Hitler also publicly denounced Blacks, as an inferior race. Jesse Owens, in his estimation, should not even be present at the Games. Jesse Owens was not only present, but he went on to win four gold medals in the 100-meter-dash, the 200-meter-dash, the broad jump and the 400-meter relay race. He demolished Hitler's claim that the Aryan race was superior to all others. Furthermore, this soft-spoken black athlete embarrassed Hitler and undermined his pompous authority in the heart of the Fatherland. We may not be in danger of being seduced by an evil power like Hitler, but we may not be clear on the authority to Whom we give allegiance. We owe our allegiance to Christ the King who redeemed us by shedding His Blood to save us. --------------------------------------------------------------------- A few years ago, Pastor Erwin Lutzer and his daughters were visiting Washington, D.C. While there, they met a man who served on former President Bush's Secret-Service security team. The gentleman offered to give them a guided tour of the Oval Office. Pastor Lutzer and his daughters passed through many security checkpoints the next day on the way to the Oval Office. At each checkpoint, they expected to be searched and questioned. But instead, the guards took one glance at the Secret-Service man and announced, "You are with him; go on in." Pastor Lutzer wrote that he expects our entrance into Heaven will be like that. We will have no credentials of our own that could possibly get us in. But Jesus will be walking along beside us. And at each gate, the angels will take one look at Jesus and announce, "You're with Him: go on in." [Erwin Lutzer, "Do Many Paths Lead into God's Presence?" Preaching Magazine March/April, 2001), p. 20.] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Susan C. Kimber, in a book called Christian Woman, shares a funny piece of advice she received from her little son: "Tired of struggling with my strong-willed little son, Thomas, I looked him in the eye and asked a question I felt sure would bring him in line: 'Thomas, who is in charge here?' Not missing a beat, he replied, ‘Jesus is, and not you Mom.’ "

The Va!can Press Office announced on November

9, 2017 that Pope Francis has decided to put a stop to the sale of cigare&es and tobacco in its duty-free stores. The reason given was that the Holy See “cannot be coopera!ng with a prac!ce that is clearly harming the health of people.” The press statement referred to the World Health Organiza!on’s sta!s!cs that state that complica!ons from smoking causes more than seven million deaths worldwide every year. The Va!can’s statement acknowledged that tobacco sales have been an important revenue source, but they said “no profit can be legi!mate if it is cos!ng people their lives.” A 2015 book based on leaked Va!can documents, “Avarice” stated that tobacco sales were the second most important income source a"er tax-free gas sales, and tobacco sales is es!mated to bring in 11 million dollars annually. The book went on to report that those sales were an example of how the Va!can’s tax-free commercial ac!vi!es were being abused. Italy has a value added sales tax (VAT) of 22%, so anyone who can manage to get a Va!can “commercial card” and make their purchases in the Va!can instead, does so. Cardholders can fill their tanks at the Va!can gas sta!on, buy their groceries at the Va!can supermarket, get their prescrip!ons filled at the Va!can pharmacy and buy their flat-screen TVs at the Va!can department store, all tax free. The Va!can “commercial card” is intended only for employees, re!rees, residents, accredited diplomats and members of religious congrega!ons. Since there are around 5,000 employees, you would not expect that an audit performed in 2013 would find that there were 41,000 “commercial cards” in use, as was reported in “Avarice.” Cardholders are limited to purchasing only 80 boxes of cigare&es a year. However that audit is said to have found 278 clients exceeding that number. The book “Avarice” makes the allega!on that cardholders are reselling their cigare&es illegally in Italy and making a nice unreported profit. Smoking is prac!cally considered a na!onal vice in Italy. The Italian government believes that reselling is taking place, and they complain to the Va!can about their lost tax income. The Va!can said that the ban on cigare&es and tobacco will begin at the start of the New Year, but the sale of large cigars would con!nue for the present !me since the smoke is not inhaled. Smoking in enclosed places was officially banned in the Va!can in 2002, although viola!ons are plen!ful. The ban will bring the Va!can closer to other European countries which have comprehensive smoke-free laws. Pope Francis doesn’t smoke, and he actually has only one lung. As a teenager a"er a bout with an infec!on, one lung was removed probably because the doctors thought it would stop the spread of the infec!on, since an!bio!c treatments were probably not available in those days. Anyway, plenty of Pope Francis’s colleagues do smoke, and they won’t be happy come the new year when they have to buy their cigare&es elsewhere. One day when I was

walking the city streets

where I was giving a series of talks, I saw what appeared to be an

older woman hunched over with a sign asking for help. At first I

passed her, on my way to visit the local drugstore. But then I came

back around when I realized that I had not been very mindful upon

first seeing her. I didn't have much cash to give her, but as I always

tell everyone else in my talks, o"en!mes what people need more

than cash is someone to at least acknowledge them. I reached into

my pocket to give her what li*le I had and I simply said, "Hello. I

hope you are okay and I hope you can use this."

When her face turned toward me I saw she was probably only about

sixteen years of age and she was very beau!ful. She smiled

immediately and said how much this meant to her. She gathered up

her few belongings and I watched her walk to a café for a meal. I

turned to walk back to my lodging and I thought to myself, "She

could have been my daughter." That's when the s!ll, small voice

spoke to me saying, "Don't you understand? That was your

daughter!"

Who is your daughter or son, your mother or father? Who is your

neighbor? Be*er yet, in whom do you see Jesus? A young homeless

girl on the street can take on so many forms: stranger, neighbor,

daughter, and Jesus. Unless we are mindful of those in our midst,

we miss the chance to see any of them. We must never be fooled by

appearance. That day I almost missed seeing my Lord.
