It is such a joy to celebrate mass in St.Joachim church. One of main the reasons is our parish is blessed with committed group of volunteers who meticulously prepare everything needed prior to the celebration of the mass. All these committed volunteers trace their

recruitment and training to Tita Maria Luz Datayan affectionately called Tita Luz. She took care of St. Joachim church’s altar and sacristy for nearly 30 years. Tita Maria Luz Datayan was born on October 11, 1927 at San Jose Nueva Ecija in the Philippines as the third child of Mr. Saturnino Datayan and Ms. Nicolasa. She was blessed with three brothers and two sisters. After completing Bachelors degree in Education she joined the University of Ateneo for her Master’s degree in Psychology. Though she had been thinking of becoming a nun for a long time, at the age of 17, while studying 1st year of Master’s in Psychology in the university of Ateneo she chose to become a nun and serve the Lord. In 1944 she joined the Franciscan order and completed the needed training and studies. Taking note of her excellence in education and commitment to carry out any given task, her superiors appointed her to important responsibilities right from the beginning of her life as a nun. She was assigned as the Principal of quite a few high schools such as Divina Pastora Academy at Gapan Nueva Ecija, Immaculate Conception High School at Gapan Tuba at Nueva Ecija, Bayombong at Nueva Viscaya, Ilagan Isabella, etc. Many of her students who have come to occupy important position both in civil and ecclesial society fondly remember her as a strict disciplinarian as well as an affectionate person. She conscientiously encouraged vocation to priesthood and religious life. Tita Luz proudly remembers and recalls the names of so many of her students whom she inspired and encouraged to become priests and nuns. Due to some misunderstanding and disagreement with her superiors she had to take the painful decision of leaving the religious life after being a nun for nearly 25 years. After leaving the religious order, she worked for a few years as a lecturer in Collegio De San Juan De Lectran. Later she also taught Psychology and Theology in the University of Santo Thomas. She came to the United States in the year 1975. Her desire to serve the Lord was realized when she was requested by the pastor of St. Joachim to be in charge of the sacristy and to be the Mass Coordinator. She served the Lord and His church for nearly 30 years with total commitment and dedication for which she never took any remuneration. She considered St. Joachim church as her home and took pride in keeping the liturgical things neat and clean. She recruited and trained a group of volunteers who would continue to keep the liturgical things neat and clean even when she is gone. Two days after sharing her life story to her Pastor, Fr. Joseph A Sebastian, and expressing her heartfelt appreciation for all the renovation work that has taken place in St. Joachim church, she peacefully died in her bed at 4.00 am on Friday, January 27, 2017. In her death, St. Joachim church has lost a beloved daughter for whom serving the Lord and His church was a lifelong commitment and a privilege. May her soul rest in peace.

On January 4, 2017,

McDonalds’s restaurants opened a franchise just steps away from the gleaming white marble dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, angering Catholic Cardinals and local business owners. The new restaurant is in a popular tourist area just outside of the Vatican City walls, and about 100 yards from the Pope’s home. There are already two existing McDonald’s outposts close to the Vatican, in addition to a Burger King, but the new McDonald’s is the only restaurant located in a building owned by the Vatican. A group of cardinals live in the same building above the new 5,800 square foot ground floor restaurant. Cardinal Elio Sgreccia, one of the most vocal critics said that McDonald’s food was far removed from Roman gastronomic traditions and not the healthiest. He said “it would be better to use those spaces to help the needy of the area, spaces for hospitality, shelter and help for those who suffer, as the Holy Father teaches.” He called the restaurant a disgrace and some local business owners had written to Pope Francis to ask him to keep the chain out, for fear it would upset the artistic, culture and social identity of the neighborhood. McDonald’s reportedly far outbid other potential tenants for the property. McDonalds say that whenever they operate near historic sites anywhere in Italy, they adapt with respect to the historical environment. The restaurant seems to have a very subdued exterior. Even if senior clergy members would rather not dine on a Big Mac with fries, the chain will likely become an attractive lunch and dinner destination for the young men of the Swiss guard, whose barracks are nearby. Nuns have been spotted going inside for lunch and some of the people who frequent the area have welcomed the new arrival. As a way to win back public opinion and atone for the resentment caused, McDonald’s has begun working with a charitable organization called Medicina Solidale to give away 1,000 meals over the next six months on Mondays at lunchtime to the homeless. The meals consist of a double cheeseburger, an apple and water. The charity will work with the Pope’s chief alms-giver. It is unlikely that the angry cardinals will receive a sympathetic ear from Pope Francis, since he has repeatedly pressed clergy to live as simple and frugal as possible. In another venture, Vatican officials, looking to increase rents, have approved the addition of a Hard Rock Cafe on the main boulevard leading to St. Peter’s Square.
