There was a legend, well-known in New Testament times, that in the building of God’s Temple by Solomon most of the stones were of the same size and shape. One stone arrived, however, that was different

from the others. The builders took one look at it and said, "This will not do," and sent it rolling down into the valley of Kedron below. The years passed and the great Temple was nearing completion, and the builders sent a message to the stonecutters to send the chief cornerstone that the structure might be complete. The cutters replied that they had sent the stone years before. Then someone remembered the stone that was so different from all the rest that it somehow did not seem to belong. They realized that they had thrown away the cornerstone. They hurried into the valley to retrieve it. Finally, from under vines and debris, they recovered it and with great effort rolled it up the hill and put it in place so that the great Temple would be complete. The stone that had been rejected had become the chief cornerstone. Jesus, who had been rejected now reigns at the right hand of the Father. -------------------------------------------------------------------Elizabeth Barrett married the poet Robert Browning against her parents' wishes. In fact, they objected so strenuously to her marriage that they disowned her. As everyone knows, her marriage was a beautiful, happy relationship for both Elizabeth and Robert. In spite of the hurt of being rejected by her family, however, Elizabeth Barrett Browning continued to write regularly to them. In each letter, she told her father and mother how much she continued to love them. She received no response. Then, after total silence for ten years from her parents, a large package arrived. Elizabeth Barrett Browning eagerly opened it. The box contained all of the letters that she had written them since her marriage to Robert. Not one had been opened. (Dr. William P. Barker, Tarbell's Teacher's Guide

(Elgin, Illinois: David C. Cook, 1994).) Parents can be vindictive at times as can children. And the pain that can result is devastating. Rejected – is there a more painful word? In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells us a story of his painful rejection by the Chosen People. ------------------------------------------------------------------- A lady answered the door to find a man standing there. He had a sad expression on his face. “I’m sorry to disturb you” he said, “I’m collecting money for an unfortunate family in the neighborhood. The husband is out of work, the kids are hungry, and their utilities will soon be cut off. Worse yet, they’re going to be kicked out of their apartment if they don’t pay the rent by this afternoon.” “I’ll be happy to help,” said the woman. Then she asked, “But who are you?” He replied, “I’m the landlord!”

From the Pastor’s Desk: Había una leyenda, conocida en tiempos

Ella no recibió respuesta.

Tarbell (Elgin, Illinois: David C. Cook, 1994).)

Join us in Celebra!ng the 100th Anniversary of the 6th Fa!ma Appari!on

Our Church will be open all day

for individual prayer.

We then will come together in

praying a

Friday. October 13, 3017 Mul"– Lingual rosary at 7:00 PM in the Church

During

the

Mass, bread and wine is blessed

and changed into the actual body

and blood of Jesus Christ

(transubstan"nated ). It is a ritual

that first began at the Last Supper,

when our Savior Jesus Christ

ins"tuted the Eucharis"c sacrifice

of his Body and Blood. At the

request of Pope Francis, a le!er

was sent out July 8, 2017 to all

Bishops worldwide reminding them that it is their duty to watch over the quality of the bread and wine that is

being used at Church and to remind the priests of their responsibility to verify the worthiness of the materials

used. In the past, religious communi"es of nuns and brothers and even priests, would make the wine and bake the bread for the church. But today, there are very few religious communi"es s"ll doing that work. Contribu"ng

to this decline was the changes required by Va"can II that voided some old recipes and ordered thicker hosts

with a breadier flavor. Also contribu"ng was the diminishing nun popula"on and the compe""on from a mass

producing secular bakery. Stores, supermarkets, and the internet are now where hosts are mainly purchased.

The Cavanagh Altar Breads Company of Greenville, Rhode Island currently produces about 80 percent of all the

hosts used by the Catholic Church in the US. They developed a proprietary flour blend, a process to seal the

wafer edges to prevent crumbs, and automa"on that allowed batches to be “untouched by human hands.” They

use state of the art machines that are capable of embossing symbols and capable of producing 25 million hosts a

week. They aggressively market their low cost products and have driven nun groups out of business. The Va"can

le!er reminds that the Eucharis"c bread must be “unleavened, consist purely of wheat, and recently made so

that there is no danger of decomposi"on. It follows that bread made from grain or mixed with another

substance other than wheat is not allowed. It is also a grave abuse to put fruit, sugar or honey in the bread. In

the case of allergies, however, low-gluten hosts are permi!ed while completely gluten-free are not. The wine

used in Church must be natural, from grapes, not mixed with other substances and not have allowed to sour. No

other drinks of any other kind, such as beer are allowed. However, in the case of allergies, mustum, a grape juice

that is either fresh or preserved by methods that suspend its fermenta"on without altering its nature, is allowed.

The Va"can le!er that was sent out suggests that the quality of the products should be guaranteed through

some special cer"fica"on and that the people producing be skilled, that they have proper equipment and that

they be dis"nguished by their integrity. Sources: news.va, lastampa.it, theguardian, pilotbulle"ns.net, vice.com
