At the turn of the century, actress Alla Nazimova was one of this country's earliest stars. Unlike many of her colleagues, Nazimova did not become trapped by a glamorous lifestyle. How did she escape? Her perspective on material things

changed the day a fire swept through her Hollywood neighborhood. As the fire moved ever closer to her home, Nazimova ran from room to room, searching for her most valuable possessions to save. To her surprise, none of her pretty furnishings and knick-knacks mattered to her at that moment. The only things she took with her were a few photographs. The fire never reached Nazimova's house, but when she returned to it, nothing felt the same. She began getting rid of her possessions, and reported greater happiness with fewer things. Most of us are not evil by our nature but simply foolish by not knowing what is important. ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Robert Fulghum is a best-selling author. His best-known book is titled All I Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. More than 15 million copies of his books are in print, and they are sold around the world. Needless to say, he has done very well financially. In an interview several years ago with a Christian magazine called The Door, Fulghum reported that since his success, people are always saying, “Well, you must have a big house and a big car.” And he responds, “No, I have the same house, same car, same friends, same wife.” Fulghum admits to being on guard against all kinds of greed, and is committed to serving God, not money. Of course, fame is a challenge, Fulghum admits, “and the challenge is to be a good steward with this kind of authority and power-especially with the economics.” So one year he did a book tour, and used it to raise $670,000 for a number of good causes. “I don’t think I should be given extra credit for doing that,” he says. “I think you should think ill of me if I didn’t do that.” Death doesn’t scare Fulghum. In fact, in one of his books is a picture of the grave he has already picked out, and he likes to visit it. It reminds him to live for the goal of laying up for himself treasures in Heaven. And when Fulghum sees the grave, he says to himself, “Don’t get lost here. Know where you’re going.” [Dr. Daniel Lioy, Tarbell’s Lesson Commentary, September 2004August 2005 (Colorado Springs: Cook Communications).] Good advice. I don’t know if he learned this in kindergarten or not. My guess is he learned it from today’s Gospel. ------------------------------------------------------------------------A mother saw her two-year-old boy swallow a nickel. She immediately ran over to him, picked him up, turned him upside down, began to beat him on the back. Well the little boy coughed up two quarters. This time she did go into a panic. She yelled for her husband who came running up and said, "What happened?" She said, "Billy just swallowed a nickel and I hit him and he coughed up two quarters. What should I do?" He said, "Keep feeding him nickels!" Greedy “fools” everywhere.

World Youth Day

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy" is the theme for the World

Youth Day in 2016. The Catholic youth of the world will meet in Krakow Poland to

celebrate their faith and learn and teach about their place and responsibili!es in

the world. Pope John Paul II, now a saint, started the World Youth Day in 1984,

a#er a Synod of Bishops on youth. Every pope has kept the thrice yearly

celebra!on.

The gathering of youth is truly a sign of hope for the future. Together, with our youth, we pray for safety and rich rewards:

Loving Father,

you sent your only Son into the world

to show us that he is the way, the truth, and the life.

Give our youth the grace and courage

to follow your Son as they journey toward you.

May this World Youth Day inspire our youth

to give witness to the joy of the gospel,

to be a sign of hope to our world,

and to lead others to know your mercy.

Send forth your Holy Spirit to guide and protect them.

Lead them to know your loving care,

and bless the work of their hands and hearts.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

St Vincent De Paul — VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

VATICAN CORNER The religious devoted always believed the altar of St. Peter’s Basilica was erected directly above the actual tomb of Peter. But the experts merely smiled, considering this an improbable fairy tale. History tells us that in the year 49 AD Peter returned to Rome and served as the bishop of the small Christian community, holding Mass in homes. During this time, he also dictated the Gospel attributed to his secretary St. Mark and writing his two letters that appear in the New Testament. In 64-65 AD, Emperor Nero set fire to Rome so that he could build his new palace. Needing a scapegoat, he blamed the Christians and a horrific persecution followed. St. Peter himself was arrested and condemned to death. He was taken to the Vatican Hill where the Circus of Caligula (also known as the Circus of Nero), a chariot race course was located. St. Peter protested that he was not worthy to die in a manner as the Lord had, so he was crucified upside down. After his death, the faithful recovered the body and buried it in a necropolis northwest of the circus at the present site of the Basilica. The faithful secretly worshiped the grave and protected it from desecration. Pope Anicetus (155-166 AD) built a memorial to mark the grave and over time other popes were buried nearby. In the year 330 Emperor Constantine, who had legalized Christianity began building a huge basilica at the grave site to honor St. Peter. The builders had to level the land and consequently filled the necropolis. The altar of Constantine’s basilica was positioned over St. Peter’s burial site. By the year 1506, the original basilica had decayed and needing replacing. Pope Julius began construction of a new basilica over the same site which ultimately became the present day basilica. Centuries passed. In 1939 when Pope Pius XI died, worker started digging a new tomb in the sacred grottoes, the level beneath the main floor of the basilica. They uncovered the necropolis a catacomb of both pagan and Christian mausoleums. Pope Pius XII gave permission to excavate the necropolis including the area under St. Peter’s high altar. The work progressed slowly. World War II came and went. In 1949 they discovered some Greek graffiti on a wall from the 2nd century which said “Peter is within”. Further excavations found bones that were initially identified as those of a man in his 60’s, about the age Peter would have been if crucified under Nero. In 1950 Pope Pius XII stunned the world with a radio broadcast announcing the find. Feelings of elation were later replaced by consternation when it was discovered that the bones, tentatively identified as St. Peter’s, were actually the remains of

an older man, a younger man, a horse, a pig and a chicken. To be continued…
