Madison Park Development Corporation is afifty year old not-for-profit organization located in

Roxbury, Massachusetts.  Madison ParkDevelopment Corporation (MPDC) was founded

in 1966 by local residents and communityactivists dedicated to the redevelopment and

revitalization of Roxbury; a communitydevastated by poor urban renewal policies.

With courage and persistence, the group rose like

a phoenix from the ashes and garnered theresources needed to rebuild the once thrivingcommunity.  This led to the formation of the

Lower Roxbury Development Corporation; whichlater formed Madison Park Development

Corporation.

MPDC became one of the nation’s firstcommunity-based organizations to

independently develop affordable housingfor low and moderate-income residents.

The Ralph D. Smith Community Service

Scholarship is named after the first executivedirector of Madison Park Development

Corporation.  Mr. Smith was a resident of the oldLower Roxbury neighborhood.  A baker by trade,Mr. Smith was a leader among the residents ofthe old neighborhood.  He led the charge to

redevelop and restore the acres and acres ofland left vacant by urban renewal.  Under hisleadership, the core units forming the MadisonPark Village complex were created.  Upon hisdeath in September 1998, Mr. Smith left his

entire estate to MPDC to establish ascholarship fund in his name that would helpstudents “who have demonstrated communityservice in the Madison Park Village and Lower

Roxbury areas.”

Danette Jones served as the second executivedirector of MPDC, from 1988 to 1998.  Under

Ms. Jones’s leadership, MPDC expanded itshousing development programs, created thecultural economic development collaborative, and launched its human capital campaigns.

These initiatives included the establishment ofyouth and workforce development programs,

revitalization of community organizing efforts, and the expansion of the computer training

initiatives.  Among Ms. Jones’s manyaccomplishments is the successful

transformation of the blighted Orchard ParkPublic Housing Development to the Orchard

Gardens Townhouses.
