Lane in North Babylon between the hours of 9am and 4pm, to obtain one. When you come into the ParksDepartment please have on hand proof of residency and birth certificates of the children in your household.

With the warm summermonths approaching us, Ihope you’re as excitedas I am! There are manygreat things happening atour parks in theupcoming months,including our popular

free summer concerts and our annual Beach Blastcelebration in August.

In addition to the exciting summer events we haveplanned, the Town of Babylon continues to investin our parks. Over the past year, we have installedtwo new state-of-the-art playgrounds with safety

surfacing at Birchwood and Geiger Parks. Wehave also installed a second synthetic turf baseballfield at Phelps Lane Park, and the Town has athird one slated for this year. In the upcoming year,we will continue investing in more projects thatmake our Town the great community that it is.

I hope you enjoy reading through this guide and besure to take advantage of all that we have planned.There’s something fun for everyone!

sSwimming ProgramsThe Town of Babylon Aquatics Program incorporates guidelines set forth by the American RedCross to teach the latest swimming and safety skills. Our morning Learn-to-Swim Program is forchildren ages 3 through 15 and includes Jellyfish, Porpoise, Shark, Manatee, Levels 2 - 6, Teen,Fitness Swimmer and Lifeguard-Readiness classes. Additionally, we offer aquatic programs forchildren who have advanced past our Learn-to-Swim Program (Advanced Programs,page 13 - 14); infants and toddlers, children with special needs, and adults (Specialty Aquatics,pages 14 – 15); and an Intramural Swim Team program (Competitive Aquatics, page 15 - 16).

Morning Swimming Lessons:American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim ProgramEligibility: Town of Babylon residents only. Ages 3-15. Age is determined as of September 1, 2016.Registration: Online Only.Session I Registration: Registration will open online on Tuesday, May 10th at 9 AM for Session Iand it will close on Thursday, June 2nd. Registration for Session I will not be possible after that date.Session II Registration: Online registration, for swimmers who are NOT participating inSession I, will open online on Monday, June 13th at 9 AM and will close on Wednesday, July 6th.Session II Registration for participants enrolled in Session I: Registration will be availableOnline Only on Friday, July 22nd from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm.

Participant registration is based on your child’s 2015 Red Cross Pass/Fail Card.Their completion status was entered into our reservation system at the end of the

2015 season. If you have any questions, please call the Aquatics Office at 893-2118.

First Day Entry Form:

Once you have successfully completed online registration, you will be emailed your receipt and

the “First Day Entry Form” Document. You will need to print and bring this paper with you on

the first day of class in order to be able to participate in swimming lessons. (You need one per

child.) If you do not receive the email with the attachments, you have not

successfully registered for the program!

PRE-BEGINNERS: Introduction to Level 1skills. Separation class for children ages 3 and 4ONLY. Parents do not accompany students intopool area. Students will be working on front andback floats, using arms, kicking and streamlines.Class held in Kiddie Pool.Jellyfish (J), introduction to level 1 skills for 3 year olds only, 5:1 ratio.Porpoise (P), introduction to level 1 skills for 4 year olds only, 6:1 ratio.*At North Amityville and Fabio Buttitta,swimmers age 3 & 4 will be in a combined class.

BEGINNERS:Level 1, must be a minimum of 5 years old toparticipate in the beginner program. Classes meetin the “big” pool. Students will be working on frontand back floats, submerging under water andstreamlines.Shark (S), level 1 skills for 5 year olds only,8:1 ratio.Manatee (M), level 1 skills for 6-11 year olds,10:1 ratio.Teen (T), multi-level beginner class for 12-15year olds*, 10:1 ratio.*Anyone 16 years of age or older, please seedescription for Adult Lessons under SpecialtyAquatics.

Once student receives an American Red CrossLevel Card, advancement through the levels isbased strictly by skill level, age is no longer afactor. Swimmers MUST provide theappropriate Red Cross Skill Level Card toregister for any of the following levels. Each newlevel builds upon skills learned in the previousl e v e l .

ADVANCED BEGINNERS: Students will beworking on the front and back crawl strokes, frontstreamline glides with kicking and rhythmicbreathing, and back glides with kicking.Level 2 (2), ARC Level 1 card required, workingon freestyle and backstroke, students should be

able to float comfortably on front and back priorto starting this class.Level 3A (3A), ARC Level 2 card required,freestyle and backstroke perfected, breaststrokeand fly kick introduced, jumping into deep water,

beginner diving.

INTERMEDIATES: Swimmers in theintermediate levels should have perfectedfreestyle and backstroke prior to registering forthese classes. Students will be working onbreaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, and diving.Level 3B (3B), ARC Level 3A card required, alllevel 3A skills reviewed plus 15 yards ofbreaststroke and butterfly.Level 4 (4) ARC Level 3B card required,swimmers will be doing laps, must be able to swim25 yards freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke andbutterfly; standing dives and sidestroke are

introduced.

ADVANCED SWIMMERS: Working onendurance and longer distances for every stroke.Swimmers must know how to properly execute thefreestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterflybefore registering for Advanced Swimmer Classes.Level 5 (5), ARC Level 4 card required, all strokes50 yards with proper stroke turns, 25 yardssidestroke, racing starts, treading water for 2 minutes.Level 6 (6), ARC Level 5 card required, all strokes100 yards, 500 yard swim, all competitive startsand turns, surface dives,20-yard underwater swim and treading water for5 minutes.Fitness Swimmer (FS), ARC Level 6 cardrequired, endurance swimming based class, warm-up, stretching, stroke drills, interval swimming,heart rate, 500 swim, 200M, 1 hour class.Lifeguard Readiness (LR), age 14, ARC Level6 or Fitness Swimmer Card required, 500 Swim,timed 50 yard freestyle, introduction to basiclifeguarding, this class covers the pre-skillstesting required to get into the ARC LifeguardTraining Course, 1 hour class.

Junior LifeguardingThis class is designed to provide a foundation ofknowledge and skills for future lifeguards.Coursework will include endurance swimming,lifesaving skills and an introduction to first aid,CPR and AED training.Eligibility: Town of Babylon residents,ages 11-13, ARC L6 card required.Registration: Online Only, May 10th-June 2nd.Fee: $75.00Dates: Monday - Friday, July 11 - August 12Time: 9 am - 10 am (1 hour class)Location: Phelps Lane Pool, North Babylon

*15 partipants max., no exeptions will be made.

WSI AideThe purpose of this course is to provide trainingfor water safety instructor aides to assist inconducting swimming and water safety courses.Ability to demonstrate swimming strokes andtechniques will be required. Aides will assistwith preschool and beginner level classes. Awater skills assessment and additional timespent volunteering are required. This class isintended for those candidates who exhibitmaturity and have a strong sense ofresponsibility.Eligibility: Town of Babylon residents,ages 13-15, ARC L6 card required.Registration: Online Only. May 10th - June 2nd.Fee: $75.00 includes ARC materials, evaluationand WSI Aide Certificate.

Registration andPre-Test: Wednesday,June 22nd, 10 am at thePhelps Lane Pool.Candidates must beprepared to swim.Fee: $325, (includeslifeguard, First Aid, CPR and AED training,materials and certification cards),checks shouldbe written out to “Town of Babylon”.Dates/Times: July 5 - August 4Tuesday & Thursdays: 8 am - 11 am with additionalonline coursework requiredLocations: Sanchez Pool, West Babylon*Of those who successfully complete the pre-test,only the top 18 swimmers will be accepted intothe program based on the timed 50 freestyle.

Additional dates may be added as necessary forsuccessful completion of course. Upon successfulcompletion of this course, participants receivecertification in lifeguard training and First Aid(valid for 2 years), CPR for the professional rescuerand AED (both valid for 1 year) and a lifeguardgift.Note 1: This class is 100% attendance requiredNote 2: Mail-in/Online registration will not beaccepted for this class; participant must registerin person and must pass registration pre-test.Note 3: Successful completion of this coursedoes not guarantee employment with the Townof Babylon.

ARC Lifeguard Training and First AidThe purpose of this course is to teach the skills andknowledge needed to prevent and respond toaquatic emergencies. This 37-hour course, willprepare lifeguard candidates to recognizeemergencies and respond quickly and effectivelyto all aquatic situations.Eligibility: Successfully pass Pre-Test ARCLifeguard Readiness/L6 skills, ages 15 and olderby first day of class.

Infant and Toddler ProgramsThe followingprogramsrequire childrento come tolessons wearingtheir swimsuit.For thosestudents notcompletely potty-trained, a swim diaper is alsorequired.

Aqua Tot (AT)This class designed for children 6 months to 2.5 yearsold, as of July 8, 2016 (birthdates between 1/8/14and 1/8/16), this infant/toddler program is a wateradjustment class that requires parent participation inthe “big” pool. All level 1 skills will be introducedalong with basic water safety skills. Instructors willuse songs and water games to enhance the skillsintroduced, 30 minutes of instruction followed by 15minutes of supervised play.Eligibility: Town of Babylon residents, ages 6months through 2.5 years old.Registration: Online only. May 10 - June 2.Fee: $50.00 per parent/child pairDates: Mondays and Wednesdays, July 6 - August 8

Volunteer Instructor-In-Training (VIT)This program is designed for swimmers who are14 and 15 years old, have successfullycompleted the WSI Aide course, and who hopeto pursue a job as an instructor in the future.VITs will work closely with Instructors assistingwith classes as needed. A letter of communityservice will be awarded at the end of theprogram.Eligibility: Town of Babylon residents, ages 14-15, WSI Aide Card required.Application Process: Please fill out anapplication at the Parks and RecreationDepartment located at 151 Phelps Lane in NorthBabylon. Candidates for the VIT program will becalled to schedule an interview in early June.Please bring all current certifications and a briefresume to the interview.Locations: West Babylon, North Babylon,North Lindenhurst and Deer Park locations

Dog Obedience ClassThe Town of Babylon, inconjunction with Shari Warfield-Hall, Certified Master DogTrainer, of Shari’s Dog Trainingof Long Island, is offering lessonsin basic dog obedience. Thisprogram is to teach the ownerand the dog how to be obedientand have a dog you can live with and enjoy.Classes will focus on the 7 basic commands (heel,sit, no, stay, come, down, and ok), along withaddressing owners concerns with other problemareas, such as housebreaking, chewing, barking andjumping. Our program will start by demonstrating howmotion pictures and television are illusions thatcreate the idea of motion. The children will thenwork hands-on producing animations on 35mmfilm and create tracings of animation cells on lightboxes. At the end of the class, their films will beshown on a movie screen. We will explain thedifference between line animation and stop-motion animation. The children will then producetheir own stop-motion animation using pose-ablefigures. At the end of the class, their stop-motionanimation will be shown on the movie screen. Thestudents will then produce another stop-motionfilm using pose-able dinosaurs on a movie-set. Atthe end of the class, the students will see their finalstop-motion animation on a movie screen. Theclass will also be producing live green screeneffects, where the students can see themselvesinside a major motion picture film. Children willsee themselves in a scene of the Harry Potter film.They will also be dressed in costume and use movieprops, such as a flying broom. The students willalso see themselves on a movie screen as they areriding a high-speed rollercoaster. We continue thegreen screen technology as the students seethemselves inside the movie Jurassic Park. Thechildren will be running from a T-Rex, hiding fromRaptors, and feeding a Brontosaurs with a propbranch. We will discuss the animatronic effectsused in movies, as we will present to the studentsour robot chimpanzee from our motion picturemuseum. Later, the students will create a stop-motion film using themselves as the special effectscharacters. They will then produce a movie special

The Town of Babylon offers residents the option to purchase a family pool plan for the summer season. The family pool plan is $85,$110, or $150 and grants unlimited access to Town pools for the entire summer. The term “family” in this context means primaryguardians and their dependents under the age of 18. Any family member over the age of 18 can not be included on the family planand must purchase an individual pool plan or daily tickets if they wish to use the facilities. When purchasing a family pool plan you mustshow proof of guardianship for any children in your care; this includes nieces, nephews, grandchildren and foster children. Ahousehold pool plan is a husband, wife and children under the age of 18. *There are no replacements for any lost or stolen pooltokens; please secure your tokens after entering a pool facility.

The Town of Babylon Beaches are accepting the New York State Access Pass for vehicleadmittance only into the Town Beaches in lieu of a Recreation Beach Pass purchased through theTown. This courtesy will enable a Town resident access to Overlook Beach, Cedar Beach, GilgoBeach, Cedar Marina, Venetian Shores and Tanner Park parking lots. The New York State AccessPass is a N.Y. State Park disability pass. You must present your NYS individual access pass alongwith your NYS Drivers License and Car Registration showing you are a Town of Babylon residentto gain access to Town facilities.

To qualify for an Individual Access Pass, an applicant must be a resident of New York State, mustprovide proof of disability, in the form of certification from the appropriate agency or by aphysician, as described on the application and must provide a recent photo that will be affixed tothe Access Pass.
