Moorestown Friends School offers a variety of summer learning opportunities for students in prekindergarten through high school.

Summer Programs Master Teachers are MFS faculty and department heads with multiple years of teaching experience. They hold undergraduate and advanced degrees from major American colleges and universities such as Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn, Brown, NYU, Notre Dame, Haverford, and Wesleyan.

Summer Programs are held on the school’s beautiful 48-acre campus. Students enjoy the use of many of the school’s facilities, including:

• Hartman Hall, a newly renovated classroom building that opened in 2012

• Innovation Lab, supplied with 3D printer, robotics materials, electronic equipment, woodworking supplies, and tools that Scholars need to bring their ideas to life • Greenleaf Mansion, home to the Art Studio, Cooking Studio, and Action Room

• Field House Gym, home to MFS varsity athletics during the school year • Computer, Music, Technology, and Science Laboratories

• The White Building and Playground, home to Beginnings at MFS: The Moorestown Friends School Early Childhood Program

Junior Scholars experience the best of both learning and summer fun. Mornings are spent collaborating with peers and master teachers in hands-on, student-centered projects.

Afternoons are all about choice. Afternoon Scholars have time for lunch (free pizza and ice cream on Fridays!) and an hour-long free swim in age-appropriate groupings. Students who have enrolled in full-day options (Minecraft, Filmmaking, LEGO® Design Build with Robotics, Musical Theater, and Journalism) return to their respective classes after swim time and finish out their day with more teacher-directed, hands-on fun. Students enrolled in half-day programs choose from a variety of afternoon options.

Students in Grades 1-3 choose between an hour of Indoor and Outdoor Sports or Creativity and Art (painting, printmaking, sculpture, and more). They spend the last part of the day in the Action Room, where they can be involved with imaginative play, engineering challenges, and creative projects of their choice. Teachers and interns work with students to support them in their investigations and ensure a safe and enriching environment.

Students in Grades 4-6 may choose an hour and a half of Art Studio or STEM Sports/Innovation Lab. New this year, our STEM Sports are modeled after the ones held at science and industry museums; they include design challenges, science experiments, and contests. 3 Junior Scholars 4

New in 2015, the Moorestown Friends School Innovation Lab is the only one of its kind in the area. The Lab is supplied with electronic equipment, a 3D printer, robotics supplies, and tools that Scholars need to design, play, tinker, and bring their ideas to life.

Senior Scholars

Ages: Students Entering Grades 6-10Dates: Weeks of July 13, July 20, July 27, and August 3Times: Courses meet Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.Cost: $485 per week

Senior Scholars choose one area of study and engage in a fun, creative, and academically rich program. They learn through hands-on activities and projects supported by superior technological resources and instruction. Scholars receive reports at the end of the session which can be sent to the child’s school if desired.

Mock Trial (Grades 7-10) July 13-17, 1 week Scholars take a case from a series of assumed facts to a jury’s decision. Through research and collaborative work, students learn about the legal system, the role of the prosecution and defense in trial cases, and how to properly prepare and present oral arguments. The class culminates in a mock trial simulation with prosecution, defense, and witnesses. Students develop useful skills in the creation of supported arguments for discussion and debate inside and outside the classroom.

Engineering, Robotics, & Computer Applications (Grades 7-10) July 13-17, July 27-31, 1 or 2 weeks*Engage in a wide variety of experiences involving engineering, robotics, and computer applications. Students create Android apps and Java applets and work with computer-aided design using PTC Pro/ENGINEER. Scholars work individually and as part of a team to build structures and devices following specific parameters. They experiment with a variety of robotics systems, learn to program, and build underwater ROVs that operate in the pool. If students have an interest in a particular area of engineering or robotics, support is provided for independent projects.*Attendance in both weeks is highly recommended but not required.

Virtual Rocket Engineering: Kerbal Space Program (Grades 6-9)July 20-24, 1 week Explore the basics of physics and rocketry by using the Kerbal Space Program to build spacecrafts. Students conduct hands-on projects to learn about the propulsive

power of rocket engines and the design steps necessary to create a functional engine. After studying aeronautical engineering concepts, including structural integrity, thrust, and lift, Scholars build and launch physical rockets of their own. Whether or not you see a future for yourself in engineering, you will enjoy conceptualizing, prototyping, and re-designing — skills that can be applied to all areas of learning.

Model UN (Grades 7-10) July 20-24, 1 week Scholars prepare for a Model United Nations committee session. They learn the process for debate in Model UN, develop position papers based on the perspective of a specific country, and conclude the week with a full-day session to pass UN resolutions addressing an issue relevant to current international affairs. Whether addressing the Ebola crisis in West Africa, confronting ISIS aggression in the Middle East, or encouraging the expansion of women’s rights in India, students acquire skills for success in Model UN competitions as well as knowledge of current events and a better understanding of how global issues are addressed.

E-Sports: League of Legends (Grades 6-9)July 27-31, August 3-7, 1 or 2 weeks* E-sports and professional gaming encompass a huge fan base, and League of Legends is the most popular competitive game to date. Mornings are spent honing personal skills with a chosen in-game character, team strategies, and developing the situational awareness needed to succeed in competitive gaming.

Afternoons are spent participating in tournaments modeled after the League of Legends World Cup Championships. Each team is mentored by its own student coach to help lead them to victory against their opponents. At the end of each week, a championship team is crowned and a trophy presented. Students may join as individuals or as part of a fully-formed team. *Attendance in both weeks is highly recommended but not required.

Is my family eligible for discounted rates?We welcome families to join our programs. Families that enroll for multiple programs are eligible for a discount as follows: • 5% for families who register children for $1000 - $1500 programs • 7% for families who register children for $1501 - $2200 programs • 10% for families who register children for $2200+ programs

Is there an extended day program for my child?Our Extended Day program is available in the morning from 7:45 to 8:55 a.m. (Junior and Senior Scholars only) and in the afternoon from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. (all Scholars). Extended Day takes place in the Action Room, where students in morning or afternoon Extended Day programs can engage in individual or collaborative projects of their choice. The charge is $7 per hour.

How do I drop-off and pick-up my child?Drop-off for Junior and Senior Scholars is between 8:50 and 9 a.m. Your child will be met by a staff member at the designated drop-off location. Pick-up is at 12 p.m. (half day) or 3 p.m. (full day). Your child will wait with his/her teacher in front of Hartman Hall.

Mini Scholars may be dropped off between 8:45 and 9:10 a.m. Pick-up for half day Scholars is at 12:45 p.m. Pick up for full-day Scholars is at 3:15 p.m. Your child will be waiting for you at the MFS Hippo in front of the White Building.

How will I be able to communicate with my child’s teachers?Parents may contact Director Kathryn Park Cook at any time. Email addresses will be provided in the event that you need to contact a teacher. Each week, your family will receive a letter documenting the week’s classroom activities, and you will have access to photos on our SmugMug site as well as updates on our Facebook page. On occasion, parents may be invited into the classroom for special events.

What about lunch and snacks?All Mini Scholars and all full-day Junior and Senior Scholars enjoy free pizza and ice cream on Fridays. Monday through Thursday, students enjoy lunches and drinks brought from home. Senior Scholars and Mini Scholars also receive snacks as part of their program. Additional food and drinks are occasionally provided by Summer Programs. Parents will be notified in advance of these special events.

General Information

How does the swimming program work?Junior Scholars enjoy swimming and water play in separate sections designated for swimmers and non-swimmers. Interns join them in the water, and a supervisor and lifeguards will be on duty to ensure a safe and fun experience for everyone. Mini Scholars enjoy playing in wading pools and sprinklers.

What health services are available for my child?There is no nurse on staff at Summer Programs. The Director, the Health Director, and several Summer Programs faculty members are trained in first aid and emergency care. However, no staff member is licensed to administer medication with the exception of emergency rescue inhalers and Epinephrine auto-injectors. Parents must address medication needs before dropping off their child.

What should my Scholar bring to camp?Mini and Junior Scholars should bring a backpack, a bathing suit, waterproof shoes, a towel, snacks, and a bag lunch. Additional items may be requested by the teacher.

Do Senior Scholars participate in recreational activities?Senior Scholars have a range of options to choose from outside the classroom. As a group, they make decisions about recreational activities and free time use. They are assigned a special area in the air-conditioned Greenleaf Mansion with comfortable sofas, snacks, foosball tables, and board games suitable for teenagers. Senior Scholars also have access to the Innovation Lab.
