Stokes Hill is a well-knownsledding hill that citizens and vis-itors have used in Moorestown fordecades. There was a point in his-tory when the historic hill wouldhave been sold to a developer, butdue to the hard word of an indi-vidual and through the rallyingefforts of residents, the townshipwas able to acquire the land andhave it for public use for decadesto come.

To honor that individual aswell as the history of Stokes Hill,a historic marker will be placedat the top of the hill. Save The En-vironment of Moorestown will

host the unveiling of the StokesHill Historic Marker on Sunday,Sept. 13 at 3 p.m.

“It is a meaningful event, hav-ing a new historic marker. Andnow (visitors of the hill) willknow a little bit about it and whatit took for it to be permanentlyavailable for use. It is a very low-key gathering, but meaningful,”

elected officials are still looking out

for our children’s safety.

Starting last Tuesday, stricter rules

went into effect for car seats, and these

rules adhere to the American Acade-

my of Pediatrics’ list of recommenda-

tions.

Among the new rules:

• Children under 2 who weigh less

than 30 pounds must be secured in a

rear-facing seat equipped with a five-

point harness.

• Children 2-4 who weigh up to 40

pounds can be either in a rear- or

front-facing seat.

• Children 4-8 who are less than 57

inches tall must be in a forward-facing

seat or a booster seat.

• Children between 8 and 17 must

wear seat belts.

Some of these changes are going to

cost parents extra money, as they will

require the purchase of new car seats,

and will require children to be in them

for longer than before.

But that’s OK. There should be no

expense spared when dealing with

child safety.

The state’s official website says auto

crashes are the leading cause of death

for children 6 and older, and using a

car seat properly is “one of the sim-

plest and most effective methods avail-

able” to protect them.

So spend whatever it takes to keep

your children safe on the road. And if

you need help installing the seats

properly, call the local police depart-

ment. Safety is No. 1.

There will soon be a new bus stop in theLenola section of Moorestown.

At its meeting on Monday, Aug. 31,Moorestown Township Council unani-mously approved an ordinance on secondreading for a bus stop on Camden Avenue.

Council approved a bus stop and install-ment of a bus stop sign to be put in onCamden Avenue on the north side. The busstop was per a recommendation from theLenola Advisory Committee. Mayor Victo-ria Napolitano felt it fits with proposed im-provements and work in Lenola.

According to the ordinance, the location

will be on the north side of Camden Av-enue, near Garfield Avenue, beginning atthe prolongation of the easterly curb lineof Garfield Avenue and extending 105 feeteasterly.

Also that night, council approved an or-

dinance on first reading for preliminaryengineering and design expenses for the re-construction of the hockey rink at WesleyBishop Park. The ordinance calls for thetownship to appropriate $100,000 and au-thorize the issuance of $95,000 in bonds ornotes.

The hockey rink is in need of an updatebecause the terrain under the rink hassome issues and the township must takeout the entire rink to rebuild it.

The estimated cost of the project is$400,000.

The township received a $250,000 grantfrom the county, and the Moorestown YouthStreet Hockey Association gave the town-ship a signed agreement for a financial con-tribution toward the project as well.

At a June council meeting, TownshipManager Scott Carew mentioned that theJeff Young Memorial Park hockey rink,which was demolished last year, could beput back into commission and a portion of the Wesley Bishop Park dasher boards

could be used for that purpose.At this meeting, Scott Taylor, the town-

ship’s landscape architect and vice presi-dent of Taylor Design Group, proposed re-cycling the hockey rink frame at WesleyBishop Park, which will be removed, andrelocating that to the rink at Jeff YoungMemorial Park.

The rink at Jeff Young Park is smallerthan the Wesley Bishop Park rink, howeverthe frame should still be able to be used.

However, the dasher boards would haveto be replaced.

By using the frame, it would reduce themoney needed for the Jeff Young Memori-al Park hockey rink.

Carew said he believes construction atthe Wesley Bishop Park rink will start

after winter.The second reading of the ordinance

and public hearing on the matter will be atthe next Township Council meeting, sched-uled to be held at Town Hall on Sept. 21 at7:30 p.m.

idea for people not to lose hope. Itis a celebration for families totake their minds off of bills andproblems and have fun,” Leathsaid.

At DHFFD, there will be freefood, games and giveaway prizes.There will also be food and mer-chandise vendors. One of the bigappeals for DHFFD is theAmazin-Grace, a scavengerhunt/obstacle course, which goesthroughout the park, and eachgroup must work as a team to ac-complish each task.

Each year, Destiny Church fo-cuses on different needs in thecommunity at the DHFFD, whichhas focused on critical issuessuch as hunger, illiteracy andhealth. It has given food boxes,collected books, given safety tips,

promoted healthy eating andmore.

For the seventh year, the focusis on back to school tips and give-

aways. Leath, along with his fami-ly and other church members,will give tips on how to deal withback to school stress and helpingchildren become more self-suffi-cient.

Some include making a morn-ing checklist and sharing inspira-tional messages.

“Instead of cursing the dark-ness, light a candle and bringsome hope back to our communi-ty. That is the reason for Discover-HOPE,” Leath said.

Destiny Church saw schoolclothing for children as a need, asother groups were already put-ting together school supplies andoffering free haircuts.

So at the DHFFD, there will beon-site shopping for children re-turning to school. They will giveaway shirts, shoes, coats,sweaters and undergarments toanyone in need.

Items include brands such asAbercrombie & Fitch and Aero-postale, all donated through apartnership with a Medford non-

profit.“These are brand new, never

worn, and you may even see themin stores. We got them straightfrom the manufacturer, absolute-ly free,” Leath said.

When a family registers, theywill receive a ticket, and once thatticket number is called, they willget a chance to shop.

For decades, people have lovedto sled at Stokes Hill, named foran early owner. The privately-owned hill was used by the publicfor years by virtue of an arrange-ment between the landowner andthe township.

But in 1991, the property was tobe sold for development. Fierce

public outcry prompted CarolMastran, local artist and STEMmember, to spearhead a “SaveStokes Hill” campaign. Contribu-tors to the cause donated thou-sands of dollars to help pay forthe purchase of the property;those who donated $10 or more re-ceived a reproduction of Mas-tran’s watercolor, “Stokes Hill

Sledders.” She led the children of Moorestown to rally strong com-munity support with their lively

posters of sledders on the hill.“A lot of people were upset

about it being sold. Carol Mastranled a campaign to stop it. She en-couraged children to makeposters about how they felt aboutthe hill and posted them in TownHall,” Foster said.

Mastran went to the townshipas well, asking it to support sav-ing Stokes Hill. In 1993, voterssuccessfully passed the first non-binding open space referendumthat backed the use of township

funds to preserve open space andacquire the 8.3-acre site. The$525,000 cost for the property waspaid for with Green Acres fundsthat included a low interest loanfor $375,000 and a 25 percent grantin recognition of the site’s impor-tant environmental and recre-ational attributes, plus $25,000from the township. The open

space includes a wooded area atthe bottom of the hill that is partof the South Valley Woods.

“Her ideas were very differentin that she used her talents to gointo the schools, talk to principalsand art teachers, so children cando posters about their thoughts of Stokes Hill. It was absolutely pre-cious to see those posters aroundthe Town Hall. The mayor andrest of Township Council weretaken aback by the desire to takeback the hill. We went throughthe process and now have it pre-served for forever,” Barbara Rich,Environmental Advisory Com-

mittee member liaison, said.“It is an important part of

town, used for more than 100years. Now no one can buy it orbuild on it, so it will be there farinto the future,” Foster said.

Sadly, Mastran passed away onJuly 9, 2014, and when she died,her family requested that peoplemake contributions to Perkins

Center for the Arts or STEM.After receiving donations, STEMdecided it would do something for

her at Stokes Hill to let peopleknow about the hill and her hardwork. The idea for the historicmarker came up and arrange-ments were made for it to happen.

“I am thrilled. I think it is won-derful and something people willread when they come and sled.And it will be a great way to re-member Carol.

“We needed to get permission,of course, and I am thrilled theysaid ‘yes’ and everything is work-ing out the way it is supposed to,”

Foster said.The unveiling of the historic

marker will include a speech byMayor Victoria Napolitano andMastran’s husband John, and inattendance will be members of STEM and the Department of Parks and Recreation.

“Part of the significance of this event is that someone

stepped up and the township ral-lied together to do this, and TownCouncil listened. It just goes to

show the power of the individualin getting things done,” Fostersaid. “Carol was a dedicated andenergetic, lovely person, besidesbeing an artist and getting peopleto follow her example because of her bubbly personality and happysmile. It is what makesMoorestown, it is peoplecaring about what goes on in thetown.”

“For people who come from outof town, they will now know howStokes Hill got there. Carol was

instrumental. People will knowsome of its history because of what the marker says and hope-fully inspire children to becomeinvolved in saving preciousplaces,” Rich said.
