Moorestown is all about thecommunity. Residents are askedto shop local and come togetheron Main Street, as many majorevents are held on the streetthroughout the year. The store-

owners are well known to alsosupport the community, takingpart in these events.

Residents and business own-ers are once again working to-gether to build the communitywith the Art About Town initia-tive.

Art About Town is a project

between Moorestown businessowners, MoorArts andMoorestown Township PublicSchools that will be regularlyshowcasing student artwork inthe windows of participatingstores and businesses – both to

The Moorestown Library willhave a new children’s librarycard designed by one of Moorestown’s very own children.

Our Lady of Good Counsel stu-dent Jamie Dunn, 9, was chosenas the winner of the MoorestownLibrary’s “Design a Children’s Li-brary Card Contest.” The libraryreceived 87 original designs andselected Jamie's drawing of a col-orful shelf full of books spellingout "My Moorestown LibraryCard."

“I felt very excited that my li-brary card was chosen,” Jamiesaid.

Ever since the new libraryopened in July 2014, it has beensigning up new members at much

higher rates, according to Chil-dren’s Librarian Jen Dunne. When Karen Campbell, the li-brary's office manager, noticed itwas time to order more librarycards, she got the idea of having adifferent design just for the chil-dren's cards.

“Several vendors offered pre-made children's designs, butwhen we saw that one of the ven-dors allowed you to submit your

own artwork, we thought it would

be fun to have a contest for chil-dren to design their own card,”Dunne said.

The contest was announcedasking children throughout thetownship and schools to enter thecontest. Jamie’s mother wassomeone who received the emailabout the contest and suggestedshe enter.

Some major projects are soonto be started and awarded inMoorestown.

Town Council unanimously ap-proved two ordinances on firstreading, one for the reconstruc-

tion of the Second Street munici-pal parking lot and the other forthe reconstruction of the hockeyrink at Wesley Bishop Park. Both,if approved on second reading, are planned to start during thesummer.

Moorestown’s new engineer,Bill Long of the Alaimo Group, who replaced Jim Ruddimanafter he retired, spoke on both of the projects during his report tocouncil.

    The reconstruction of the Sec-

ond Street municipal parking lotreceived a bid of $970,000 fromRicky Slade Construction. Fromthe ordinance, $1 million is beingappropriated for the project. This

includes new curbing, piping, tree removal and any other de-tails related to the complete re-construction of the parking lot.

The reconstruction of thehockey rink at Wesley BishopPark was bid for $341,000 also byRicky Slade Construction. A totalof $150,000 is being appropriated

for the project, according to theordinance. As part of that project, the dasher boards that are re-moved from the hockey rink willbe repurposed for the hockey rinkat Jeff Young Park. The townshipreceived a $250,000 grant to put to-ward work on the hockey rinkproject, and $80,000 is pledgedfrom the Moorestown YouthHockey Association.

According to Long, the esti-mates for both projects fromRicky Slade Construction came

in lower than what was predicted.Long also said the constructionfor the parking lot went as high as

On Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m.,the Moorestown Department of Parks & Recreation will sponsorthe annual Memorial Day Cere-mony at Memorial Field onChurch Street. This year marksthe 30th anniversary of the Me-morial Day Ceremony and willpay special tribute to the servicemen and women who served dur-

ing the Korean War. The KoreanWar was a defining moment inAmerica’s history, militarizing aconflict that had largely been eco-nomic and political up to thatpoint. The Korean War is noted asbeing a major turning point inthe Cold War era as it confrontedauthoritarianism abroad.

The first Memorial Day cere-monies date back to the late 1800s,

following the Civil War. Accord-ing to the U.S. Department of Vet-erans Affairs, in 1868 an organiza-tion of Union Army veterans, theGrand Army of the Republic, es-tablished Decoration Day as atime for the nation to reuniteafter its most deadly and destruc-tive war. The Civil War tested thestrength of the United States andits citizens, and Decoration Daywas an opportunity for healing. While many places in the United

States claim to have been the firstto observe this holiday, it was notuntil 1971 that Memorial Day wasdeclared a national holiday by anAct of Congress. The words of Gen. John A. Logan of the GARmore than 100 years prior guideour observance of this holidayeven now: “Let no neglect, no rav-

Moorestown water crisisbecoming a crisis of leadership

Your front-page article for May 4 to 10,“Township considers filters for radiologi-cal chemicals in water,” shows that ourwater crisis is rapidly becoming a crisis of leadership.

Township manager Scott Carew, engi-neer L. Russell Trice and Mayor Phil Gar-wood are now reconfiguring the “interimsolution” they put forward in early March.

The original plan called for the deploy-ment of a Calgon Carbon Corp. filtrationsystem designed to remove these two in-dustrial solvents Trichloropropane (TCP1,2,3) and Trichloroethylene (TCE) fromour drinking water. That’s not good enough

now.The new plan requires additional equip-

ment from Water Resources TechnologyInc., which will filter out radionuclides like“radium, gross alpha and other contami-nants.”

According to The Sun, the changes were“in response to citizen concern,” but mostof the heat was applied by the MoorestownWater Group. In April, MWG posted a de-tailed “Fact Sheet” on its Facebook pagearguing that the township’s interim planwould not remove dangerous radioactive

chemicals. The township leaders knew the water

group was right, and they acknowledged asmuch by changing their interim plan. Theworst part is that the township leadershave the same information MWG has, but

they didn’t include the radioactive contam-inants in their “interim solution” untilthey had to. When the people lead, the lead-ers will follow.

Since October 2014, when the state De-partment of Environmental Protectionrecommended that both Church Streetwells be closed due to contamination, town-ship leaders have repeatedly said ourwater was always safe, that it is safe now,and it will be even safer in the future.

We can’t rely on such vague assurancesany longer. We have to act like adults, for

our children’s sake. This is the water theybathe in, the water they drink.

We have no reason to believe in the “in-terim solution” or in the $20 million “per-

In just a few short weeks, high

    school seniors throughout New

Jersey will be wrapping up their

final days of class, taking their final

high school tests and walking onto

their high school field one more time

    for graduation.

It’s an exciting time in the life of a

young man or young woman. The final

weeks of high school, the graduation

    ceremony, the hugs and congratula-

    tions following, the celebrations that

will last throughout the summer and

the packing for, the drive to and the ar-

rival at college are memories gradu-

    ates will remember fondly.

To all the grads out there, while you

may want to rush these last days so

school can be out for summer, and so

high school can be out forever, remem-

ber to savor every remaining moment.

This may not mean much to you

right now, but there are experiences

you will have in these final days, these

next few months, that you will neverreplicate again. There are people you

will graduate with – some friends,

    some acquaintances, some whom you

grew up with – whom you may never

    see again.

There are some whom you are close

with now who you will grow apart

from over the years, and there are

some whom you will grow closer to as

    your lives change.

Those wistful days of no responsi-

bility will be behind you. Soon, you

will be on your own. You will have the

freedom to eat pizza for breakfast, stay

up until 4 a.m., take a nap in the mid-

dle of the day, go berzerk at a sporting

    event wearing your college’s colors

and skip a class if you want to – note:

we don’t recommend that last one.

    The label “high school student”

came with a lot of restrictions on your

freedom, but it also gave you a get-out-

of-jail-free card, or cards. Once gradua-

tion is over, that label goes away. All

freedoms given to an American adult

    will be yours.

But so, too, will all the consequences

of your actions. The decisions you

make – from as serious as “do I study

for this test?” to “should I eat another

burrito?” – will all have results that

will affect your life. It’s a lot of respon-

sibility. It’s a good thing, for sure, but

it can also be a scary thing, becoming

    an adult.

So, while you still have the option,

live life as a “kid” one last time. Savor

these last days of high school. And be

confident that you will do just fine.

    Good luck and congratulations!

Did you know that whileMoorestown has the highest prop-erty values in our region, we haveone of the lowest property tax

rates in Burlington County? One of the important ways that

we are able to keep our taxes lowis by staffing our fire depart-ments primarily with volunteers. Our brave fire and EMS volun-teers do a fantastic job keeping allof us safe, and are always lookingfor additional bodies to join theirranks.

To that end, Deputy Mayor Vic-toria Napolitano and I have beenhaving conversations with town-ship officials and our volunteerfire companies over the last fewweeks to find ways in whichTown Council can help with re-

    cruitment of more great volun-teers.

Together we are pushing to rollout a number of discounts, feewaivers and other benefits tothank those who courageouslyserve our town, while at the sametime saving taxpayer dollars andencouraging more Moorestoni-ans to volunteer.

This concept is truly win-win,as our taxpayers will benefit bycontinuing to receiving afford-able top-notch emergency servic-es while Moorestown Fire andEMS are able to use these incen-tives to recruit new members thatwill keep their tradition of serv-ice alive for generations to come.

Some of the ideas we are dis-cussing include free programsthrough the Department of Parks

and Recreation, including sportsprogramming, classes, theaterand more. Also under considera-tion are waiving fees for pet li-

    censes; freezoning applica-tions; andworking with

various pri-vate sportsclubs in townto waive feesfor families of volunteer fireand EMS per-sonnel.

In the com-ing weeks, wewill be an-nouncing the final plan with ourfriends at the Moorestown FireDepartment and Lenola FireCompany, and we anticipate thatour colleagues on council will

join us in putting these ideas intoaction.

All of us can do our part to sup-port the men and women whoselflessly serve our community. If you are a member of a club or or-ganization that would like towaive membership/participationfees as a part of this program, e-mail me at [email protected]. Together, we can help

our brave firefighters continue tokeep our town affordable and giveback to those who answer the callwhen we need them most.

Jamie, loving to read as well asdraw, thought it would be some-thing fun to do and decided to try.

“I thought it would be fun to doand pretty cool if I won, but still,if I didn’t, fun to design,” Jamiesaid.

To get her idea, she thought of a library full of bookshelves and, seeing the email saying “My FirstLibrary Card,” was inspired bythat.

“When I think of a library, Ithink of a book shelf. So I thoughtit would be cool to make that intoa library card,” Jamie said.

She began with a rough draft, using paper and pencil. Once shehad her design, she worked tomake sure it was even, using aruler for the lines of the shelvesand books. She then outlined itwith a black marker and coloredit in with colored markers, finish-ing it off with having the books

spell “My Moorestown LibraryCard.” She said she worked on itover about three days, for an houror so each day.

“Submitting it, I was a littlenervous. I knew even if I didn’twin, I was proud of myself,”Jamie said.

The contest idea proved to bevery popular, as it received 87 en-tries, all of which reflect a widevariety of ideas and artisticstyles, and it was very challeng-ing to choose just one, according

    to Dunne.“We wanted something color-

ful with a strong concept that

looked like authentic child's art-work. In the end, Jamie's book-shelf design is crisp and full of

color, and we think it will comeacross beautifully as a librarycard,” Dunne said.

When Jamie found out shewon, she was very excited andhappy.

The library staff was over-whelmed by all the creativity andhard work the artists put intoeach design. They loved the op-

portunity to see all the ways chil-dren depicted the library and thereading experience, and wanted

to share that with the public. Todo so, library staff created a col-lage of all the designs wrappedaround the children's desk.

“We encourage everyone tocome and see all the beautiful arton display,” Dunne said.

The new library card for chil-dren is scheduled to debut some-time this summer.

give students and the school dis-trict an opportunity to show whatis going on in art classes, and alsoas a way for the businesses toshow their support for the artsand relationship with groups inthe community. Art is on displayat two stores, Health Haven andMoorestown Hardware.

“It's a great way for the com-munity to see a sampling of whatour public schools create withinthe visual arts classes. Our stu-

dents create artwork that is cre-ative, insightful and meaningfulthroughout every grade level. Thearts help build strong communi-cation, problem solving, as wellas technical skills which preparesand provides students with theskills necessary for success in the21st century,” Patricia Rowe, su-pervisor of arts and technology, said.

“(Moorestown businesses) areall about shop local and being apart of the community, and Ithink that art can be very heal-ing, so it is a great fit for (HealthHaven.) It makes me really happylooking at all of this great art-work,” Donna Wood of HealthHaven said.

“Because we do have a MainStreet where people gather, wewant them to gather more, useour Main Street and be proud of

the fruits of our kids’ labor,”MoorArts Visual Arts TrusteeSophia Geiger said.

    Art About Town started when

Wood approached Candace Cole-man, MoorArts communicationstrustee, at a Moorestown Busi-ness Association meeting in re-gard to displaying student art-work in her store window. She feltart from local students would be agreat way to promote healthy liv-ing as well as foster the communi-ty.

“What better way to advertisewhat Health Haven is all about bysaying we’re about the communi-ty? We’re here to be a part of the

community. So I thought it wouldbe a great idea to display the art-work,” Wood said.

Hearing about the initiative atthe MBA meeting, MoorestownHardware owners Pete and JulieBender, liking to connect with thecommunity and having large win-dows that can often be hard to dis-play, decided to participate in ArtAbout Town too.

“For us, it is another connec-tion with the town that we love. Itis really neat for the kids to seetheir artwork,” Pete said.

“It brightens up the windowsand really helps us out,” Juliesaid.

Coleman, who loved the idea, met with Geiger, Rowe and MTPSart teacher Toni Paparone tocome up with the materials, time-lines and artwork needs for thestores involved. Both the high

school and middle school partici-pated in preparing 24 studentpieces for display.

    “The honors visual arts stu-

dents were currently working onpainting projects based on stu-dent views concerning social is-sues when the inception of thisexhibition was being discussed. We thought these pieces would beinteresting to display throughoutthe community. They communi-cate individual student views onthe various subject matter as wellas the artistic skills of our honorsart students,” Paparone said.

So far, the response to ArtAbout Town has been very posi-

tive. Students are excited andproud; the community has beenamazed and supportive; and busi-ness owners have been delightedwith the responses from the com-munity.

“No one can believe how aston-ishing these works were – and bymiddle school students … Somany people took the time tothank me for displaying the art-work. I could tell that the wholecommunity supports their ‘chil-dren,’” Wood said.

“I think people can’t believethat it is just high school stu-dents. Parents come in and thankus for having it on display. It’s justanother way to connect,” Juliesaid.

For the future, student artworkwill be rotated quarterly at thecurrent stores. The hope is to con-tinue to build a stronger commu-nity and for more businesses totake part in Art About Town.

    “(We’d like) to continue to

build a strong bond between thecommunity and our publicschools as well as build upon thisinitiative to hopefully includemore store windows in the fu-ture,” Paparone said.

“I hope in years to come thatwe can continue this traditionwith the art classes and all of theschools in Moorestown,” Woodsaid.
