Travel on a high seas adven-ture with sailors, pirates andcivilians this fall withMoorestown High School. Therewill be lots of action with swordfights and mutinies as well asemotion with conflicts of goodand evil on this daring ship voy-age, all in a quest for buried treas-ure.

All of the action and adventurewill take place when MoorestownHigh School Theater presents its2015 fall play, Ken Ludwig’s “Trea-sure Island,” based on the classicnovel by Robert Louis Stevenson. The performances will take placeon Oct. 22, 23 and 24 at 7:30 p.m. inthe MHS auditorium. All ticketsare $10.

“Come out because it is goingto be a really good show; you getto see a classic come to life; andwho doesn’t love pirates? Pleasecome to support MHS theater,”Director Erica Scanlon Harr said.

MHS decided on Ludwig’s“Treasure Island” to get as manystudents involved as possible aswell as to revisit a classic piece of literature. There are 29 studentsin the cast, and “Treasure Island”

    is a literary work everyoneknows.

Some of the things that makethis adaption different from oth-ers is the roles of men beingplayed by females. The lead, JimHawkins, is played by a female,Skylar Raye Noyes, along withmany other cross-gender roles.

“We have gender bended a lot

of our roles,” Scanlon Harr said.“It is fun being rough and more

boy like. It is a different side of me. It includes a lot of action, running and adventure,” Noyessaid.

    letter to the editor

Writer: What’s the delay? We want our park now

Since moving back to Moorestown threeyears ago, I’ve walked by a modest parcel of land on the corner of High and Mainstreets. It would be considered a primepiece of real estate if someone had the cashto build upon it. But no, this corner has

been preserved for a park. Most of us Moorestownians have eager-

ly awaited a place to rest our behinds on fora bit of people watching, especially whenthe leaves are turning the kaleidoscope col-ors of autumn or the children of summer

time are licking the melting ice creamcones off their fingers

It’s such a perfect slice of land smack inthe middle of town, but one nagging ques-tion has been kvetching my curiosity. When will Perchon Park be a reality? Godknows the sign with the promise is begin-ning to fade from old age.

Two years ago, I bought a few expensive

raffle tickets in the hopes of winning ashiny red Toyota that was parked in thepark. What happened to the hundreds of dollars raised from that event? Please don’ttell me it was spent on the car.

At one point, there was a banner draped

over the sign that read “Coming Soon.” Thepeople of Moorestown are too smart to buy

There was a time when Las

    Vegas was a struggling gam-

    bling resort town. During the

economic crisis of the mid-2000s, peo-

ple had less money to frivolously

spend – and the money they did have

to frivolously spend wasn’t going to-

ward casino gambling.Casino revenue fell, and casinos

along the Strip were in trouble.

And then, casino and hotel execu-

tives had an idea. They stopped focus-

ing on gambling and started focusing

    on other entertainment attractions.

    In addition to building exquisite

    shopping centers, luxury pools and

    spas, fine dining establishments and

    nightclubs, hotels began signing up

    musical performers who attracted big

    audiences to long-term deals.

    Caesars Palace inked a three-year

deal with Celine Dion in 2002 that had

her performing five nights a week at

its venue. Motley Crue signed a simi-

lar deal at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casi-

no, and Britney Spears did the same at

    Planet Hollywood.

The idea worked. Tickets to theseshows are in high demand, and the

visitors to Las Vegas for the shows

spend money at other attractions –

and gambling – at Las Vegas casinos.

    Naturally, our lawmakers in New

Jersey think this is a good idea, and

they want to bring it to Atlantic City.

They already followed in Vegas’ foot-

steps with the dining, nightlife, shop-ping and revitalization of the town, so

why not piggyback on the entertain-

    ment residency idea?

    A state Senate committee approved

a new bill last week, dubbed the “Brit-

ney Bill,” that would exempt stars who

play at least four nights in Atlantic

City from having to pay state income

taxes on all shows they play in New

    Jersey.

    Senate Republican Leader Tom

Kean, who co-sponsored the bill, said

he believes Atlantic City can “trans-

    form into a premier entertainment

destination,” and this bill would help

it do that. More than 50,000 fans paid

to see Maroon 5 in Atlantic City thispast August, and Kean believes people

would flock to the city from all over to

see other A-listers, if it were the only

    place they would play.

    New Jersey Policy Perspective’s

head says it’s a waste of money, and

that star entertainers don’t pick ven-

ues based on whether they have to pay

taxes. We agree that these A-listers

probably pick venues off how many

tickets they can sell, but if Atlantic

City really can be an entertainment

destination that sells 50,000 tickets to a

concert, and if a tax incentive pro-

gram like this would indeed help to at-

tract more A-listers, then what is the

downside? Sure, we’d lose the tax rev-

enue, but we’d gain all the visitors.

    in our opinion

As the autumn weather arrives,we find relief in the cooler days, the changing of the leaves and theimminent arrival of the holidays.Yes, while it is mid-October now,we will blink our eyes and it willsuddenly be mid-November andthe holiday season is upon us.

What better time than now tostart planning holiday activities? The Department of Parks andRecreation is working with theEvergreen Women’s Club to makeholiday memories on the next “Se-nior Trip.”

This fall, the department is co-ordinating a day trip to Caesars inAtlantic City to see “Elf.” This fa-vorite Broadway adaptation of the movie starring Will Farrell isthe story of an orphaned babywho becomes Santa’s champion.

    When Santa is out delivering hispresents to the world's children,little does he know that he haspicked up an unexpected visitor;

an orphaned baby boy hascrawled into his present sack, andhe is unknowingly whisked off tothe North Pole. Years later, theboy, Buddy, now a fully grownman, is confronted with a star-tling truth; he is not in fact an elf,but a human. With Santa's per-mission, he heads off to the brightlights of New York City to discov-er his real birth family. Buddy’s

personal journey becomes a mis-sion to save the Christmas spirit.Buddy’s genuine love for Christ-mas, and desire to improve the at-titudes of the surly New Yorkershe encounters, including his birthfather, and the hilarity that en-sues can lift even the “grinchiest”spirit.

The Department of Parks andRecreation is proud to partnerwith the Evergreen’s Women’sClub to offer this event as one of the many “Senior Trips” that

occur during the course of theyear. This trip is scheduled for

sion,” Scanlon Harr said. “It is anice relationship and element to

add in.”“The audience has to figure out

if they like Silver or think he isevil and dislike him. I also hopethey take away a new perspectiveon pirates; that some are kind, but have to be rough,” Noyes said.

Scheibe, playing Silver, wouldlike these elements to spark con-versation and really get peoplethinking.

“I want to see conversation andpeople get invested and thinkabout it more than just coming towatch (the play). When you getpeople to talk, you feel that youdid a good job and that it was a re-ally good show,” Scheibe said.

MHS Theater is going to try tobring the pirate feel into the audi-ence. During intermission, somepirates will come to take pictureswith audience members, andthere will be pirate-themed facepainting available, too.

“It’ll make it feel like a whole

event,” Scanlon Harr said.Performances will take place

in the Moorestown High Schoolauditorium, 350 Bridgeboro Road,on Thursday, Oct. 22, Friday, Oct.23, and Saturday, Oct. 24. Ticketscan be purchased online atmoorestownhstheater.weebly.com.

“If you’re really into literature,it is obviously an amazing story, and it has adapted really well intoa play. And it just has this reallyfun, high energy even when itgets really serious. You can’t bebored watching this show,” saidMax Bixby, who is playing Cap-tain Smollet.
