to support the Good Design Awards through our

tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

The Good Design Awards commend and

acknowledge outstanding achievement in

the field of design and innovation, and act to

promote and celebrate the creative mindset.

Attracting visitors from around Australia and

overseas, the Good Design Awards reinforce Sydney’s

reputation as a global leader in design, so it is fitting

they make up part of the world’s largest festival of

lights, music and ideas in 2015 – Vivid Sydney.

On behalf of the NSW Government, I

congratulate Good Design Australia for its

dedication to this fantastic event, and wish

all participants the very best of luck.

Every product, service, space or experience has been designed.

The issue is: was it good design or bad design? Even worse,

was the design left to chance? Design has never been more

fundamental to our standard of living than it is now, and it will

only grow in relevance and importance over the next decade.

That is why amplifiers of this message are so very important.

Good Design Australia has been a key catalyst of this message

and, through the Good Design Awards program, amplifies

and celebrates the power of design in a very practical way.

Design is making a tangible contribution to improved

living standards at a time where Australia has to deal with

slipping commodity prices, trading partner uncertainties

and an ageing workforce. We can and will design

better products, better services, better businesses and

experiences and a better future for us all. I am particularly

delighted that I have the privilege to award a Patron’s

Prize to recognise excellence in one of these areas.

I want to congratulate all the businesses that made submissions

for this year’s Good Design Awards and I congratulate

those that have gone on to be recognised with a Good

Design® Selection and the coveted Good Design Award®.

But most important in my mind are the thousands of people

behind the design of these brilliant projects. The innovative

people that “live” design. You are the true inspiration and

example for every corporate and government leader in

Australia and our world - we all can learn from you.

Let’s all be part of the good design movement!

At Good Design Australia, the word good is at the core

of everything we stand for. We evaluate and argue the

merits of good design, what it means, what it says about

the world around us and the future we are creating.

We are passionate about helping imagine a better world

that is capable of change by design. Through the annual

Good Design Awards, we showcase the best examples

of design, innovation and creativity that are pushing

the boundaries and driving this positive change.

We’ve been setting the international standard for good

design since 1958. Our expert panel of Judges look for

the things that give the user a beautiful experience and

make a difference to our quality of life on this planet.

2015 has been a significant year for these prestigious

Awards as we broadened the categories to better reflect

the ever-expanding role of design into areas of business

and society. With seven umbrella design disciplines now

represented, as well as a student category, the Awards create

a unique platform to promote good design in all its glory.

I am eternally grateful to the Judges who give up

their time and expertise to assess the innovative

projects in these Awards and I am always in awe of

the seriousness they bring to this important process.

Judging the best in design from such an incredible list

of submissions is no easy task and these Awards would

not be possible without their valuable contribution.

Finally, to the designers, engineers, architects, innovators

and change-makers who put their projects up to be judged

against the best in the world – you deserve to be celebrated

at the highest level possible. You are the ones that are

imagining what a better future looks like by designing better

products, more user-centric services and experiences,

more beautiful and efficient spaces and places and more

competitive businesses. You are the true heroes who are

designing a better Australia and a better world for us all.

Design for a better Australia, and a better world

Groundbreaking design for a better worldTesla Model S pulls no punches as a leader in disruptive design and technology. It’s the world’s first premium sedan built from the ground up as an electric vehicle (EV), and the world’s fastest four-door vehicle ever built. It’s also earned the title of safest vehicle ever tested in the USA.

A complete game changer

Like a world-class endurance athlete, Model S was

designed to be the epitome of efficiency. In its grace

and performance, the Model S overcomes pre-

conceived ideas around what EVs should be like.

It shows the world that zero-emission sustainable

transport does not have to mean compromises.

This car combines top ride quality and

sustainability like no other - it’s about

better driving for a better future.

Supercar performance in a sedan

The aerodynamic Model S offers the responsiveness,

stance and agility expected from the world’s best

sports cars – all in a luxury performance sedan.

Designed for airflow and drag reduction, it is a

leaner and lower ‘take’ on a traditional sedan

- complete with zero profile door handles.

Unlike a gasoline-fuelled engine with hundreds

of moving parts, Tesla electric motors have

only one moving piece: the rotor. As a result,

Model S acceleration is instantaneous, silent

and smooth. It also delivers better range and

unparalleled all-weather traction control.

The Model S represents automobile

design and engineering at its best.

“ Every aspect of this entry is amazing and truly deserves to be recognised at this level.”Judge’s Comment

Page 19: 2015 Good Design Awards Yearbook

19

Sustainable without compromise

With fossil-fuelled transport widely accepted

as a main contributor to global environmental

issues such as climate change and air pollution,

Model S offers a smarter design solution.

From day one, zero-emissions travel has been at the

very heart of this electric vehicle’s evolution. Not

only does it move away from reliance on dwindling

petroleum supplies, the Model S gives the nod to

cleaner power sources by allowing consumers to

charge their batteries with renewable energy.

By combining this with instant torque, incredible

power and increasing affordability in a good-

looking machine, Tesla is paving the way for the

world’s transition to sustainable transport.

A smarter driving experience

Model S is all about the driver:

- It’s as quiet as a recording studio inside, thanks

to meticulous noise engineering combined

with the uniquely quiet powertrain.

- The 17-inch touchscreen puts rich content

at your fingertips and provides mobile

connectivity so you can easily find your

destination, favorite song or a new restaurant.

- The autopilot combines a camera, radar, and

360 degree sonar sensors with real time

traffic updates to automatically drive on the

open road. It will change lanes with a tap of

the turn signal, and it can even park itself.

It’s these features plus the extra front

truck storage, hidden charge port and

regular software updates that make

for a truly unique user experience.

With bushfires becoming a more frequent blight on Australia’s landscape, the Fire Front Early Warning and Detection System is a welcome design solution to tackling their risk to communities.

Detectors mounted around the property, combined with a home module and mobile app, allow residents to be prepared year-round. Early detection of bushfires is made easy via thermal imaging and ultrasonic wind sensors. The app and home module act like existing home smoke detectors but go one better in design by alerting residents when a fire is detected, whether at home or away.

At a community scale, residents and fire services can connect to other users on the network. This critical channel of continuous communication ensures live, accurate and fast information delivery to those affected during an emergency. It also allows residents and fire services to rapidly decide early escape or preparation to fight and protect.

Fire Front delivers a potentially powerful first line of bushfire defence through smart design and technology, which is deserving of top acclaim.

Fire Front - Bushfire Early Warning and Detection System

Designed by: Max Glanville, University of NSW

Judge’s Comment

“ This design solution is elegant and very well resolved. As a concept, it has real market potential and if implemeted, could see a transformation in the way that buildings in bushfire prone areas are monitored and protected.”

Freedive - Stay Underwater Without Tanks

Designed by: Edric Verbeek-Martin, University of NSW

Freedive bridges the gap in equipment between SCUBA diving and snorkelling. With Freedive, people can dive to six metres and stay there for over an hour without surfacing. You can enjoy the ocean’s wonders without the need for cumbersome SCUBA gear, special training, or to be tethered to a boat.

FREEDIVEDive without tanks

Nautilus

Designed by: Raymond Tinyow, University of NSW

Nautilus is a self-righting life-jacket with an integrated inflatable life raft system designed for the offshore commercial industry. It provides immediate short-term protection to those who fall overboard, protecting the user from the elements - waves, water spray, wind, cold temperatures - and ultimately drowning.

ErgoFin

Designed by: James Perry, University of NSW

The ErgoFin is for anyone who has ever tried to walk awkwardly on land with SCUBA fins on. As a result of prototyping and test diving, this innovative shin-attached design improves diver mobility out of the water, and eradicates leg stresses due to traditional foot-attached fins.

Chilld Cooling Device

Designed by: Daniel Macks, University of Technoloy Sydney

The Chilld cooling device is designed to fit around the neck region of a motorcyclist in warmer climates; when comfort and heat exhaustion can be a curse on road safety. A cold pack surrounding the neck region draws excess heat away from the arteries much faster than naturally cooling, by using unique technology.

YOLK

Designed by: William Duong, University of Technology Sydney

Lack of empathy can be the root of many problems in parent-child relationships. YOLK aims to help overcome this, minimise confrontation in discussions and aid conversation via tactile, audio and visual responses. For both parents and children to use, it’s a unique physical product and tool to coach and guide them through difficult situations.

U-Press

Designed by: Tom Heath, Monash University

The UPress makes bricks for building and fuel more efficiently and at less cost compared to standard design. This is particularly beneficial for resource-poor communities who can use the UPress to cost-effectively turn locally sourced materials into shelter and fuel for their needs.

Impala Bike Tent

Designed by: Thomas Millward, Monash University

The Impala Bike tent provides a lightweight camping solution for tour bikers; groups which bike long distances and as such need to camp at night. Unlike other carry systems which are often clumsy and inefficient, it utilises the inherent structure of a bicycle to reduce weight and be stored effectively.

‘The world is beautiful’ is the powerful theme which underpins Centor’s new business direction. Following a 15-month business design journey, Centor can now say why they do what they do. For Centor - a designer and manufacturer of architectural hardware systems for folding and sliding doors, screens, blinds and bifold door locks - it’s about being best at connecting people with the world outside.

Clarity of purpose makes for better business. But it has meant a courageous and challenging rethink around the company’s business model, especially after six decades of success. The design process involved 300 interviews with people from Prague to San Diego, using tools like the Business Model Canvas and the Buyer’s Journey to gain insights from their intended customer and channel partners.

From this, Centor has identified their customer, designed a brand new strategy and new products and created an entirely new channel to market.

Their brand promise, culture, employee awards, strategic projects and internal communications now all hinge on their one single defining goal: connecting people with the world outside. And for the first time in 64 years, each employee in 11 time zones understands this purpose.

“ A playful and engaging idea that takes shape in new and interesting ways at every interaction. Strong, inspiring and modular design that promotes secondary messages in a clever, simple and enduring way.”

What would childhood be like without bubbles? With them, it’s a world of curious fun: blowing them, chasing and catching them. Better still, popping them. And beyond their bursting pleasure, bubbles evoke a sense of freedom, inspiration and wonder.

It is for all these reasons that bubbles inspired the Magic Bubble Children’s Growth Club branding project. Since it’s a children’s learning centre, Dongdao set out to create a logo that was not only attractive to children and their parents, but also one which reflected the company’s mission: to provide a ‘free’ space for children to learn and to develop their potential in many interesting ways.

Based on the core brand concept ‘imagination without boundaries’, the designers used the shape of a bubble and a simple heart for the logo. The heart symbolises children’s curiosity for the unknown, and for parents’ caring. The colours - yellow and blue – are favoured by children.

The end result is playful, enchanting, fun and dynamic.

Libraries in the 21st century are more than just grand public homes for history and information. They provide a central knowledge bank and key cultural service for communities everywhere, which need to stay in step with contemporary learning and the digital age.

The State Library of Victoria is no different. Working with Meld Studios, the Library’s new service design brings the digital future to its doorstep and beyond. The design also addresses shifts in public attitudes towards cultural institutions and the changing role of State Libraries.

Over a twelve week period an integrated, participatory design team sought to understand current state service delivery, plus identify opportunities for improvement and innovation. Staff were engaged at every stage. After prototyping and testing concepts, they laid out a future vision for service delivery, from the iconic front lawn to offsite storage 100km away in Ballarat.

The new design offers a warmer and more inviting welcome to visitors, dedicated co-working spaces and Members’ Lounges, and rezoning of sections to match staff capabilities. It makes the Library’s most popular services more efficient. And digitalization features throughout, from its collections to signage. Overall, this service design is about better user experience and better learning spaces, worthy of recognition.

IHearYou® is the world’s first hearing aid solution that enables patients to easily tune their acoustic preferences themselves, instead of a trained audiologist.

The modern, attractive hearing system uses a Bluetooth enabled programmer to connect hearing aids to a smartphone application that patients then use to adjust their settings.

In Australia, more than 4 million people have hearing loss and many risk physical, cognitive and mental health issues by not addressing it. IHearYou® removes barriers that prevent people from obtaining hearing aids, such as cost, distance and stigma. It also eliminates a major industry challange of unsatisfactory tuning by audiologists, ensuring what a patient hears is exactly right for their needs.

The system gives patients access to an advanced range of acoustic characteristics they can easily customise themselves. Research shows the greater the sense of involvement in the hearing aid set-up process a patient has, the greater benefit they receive.
