ANiMAL LovEr: The late Michael Jackson with one of the animals at his Neverland ranch. Maids who served the pop singer claim he was ‘extremely filthy.’

Additional reporting by www.capitalfm.co.ke

Michael Jackson report-edly lived in deplorable conditions inside his Neverland Ranch. The New York Post spoke with his former house-keepers about the alleged filth. A woman identified only as ‘Maid No.1’ told the newspaper, ‘Michael sometimes ran around where the animals were, and he’d track... poop throughout the house and think nothing of it. “Then, if you said some-thing, he’d threaten to make doo-doo snowballs and throw it at you.” ‘Maid No.1’ claimed Jackson obsessively col-lected items, telling the newspaper that Jackson was ‘[a] pack rat.’ ‘Maid No. 2’ told The Post that Jackson was in possession of “A soiled baby’s diaper, and a pair of Fruit of the Loom that was obviously worn by someone who was either a teen or an early-age

adult.”That housekeeper claimed to the news-paper Jackson urinated in front of her the day after his 1993 Oprah interview. “He literally peed on the floor of the entryway,” she claimed. “It was surreal. He just stood there, unzipped his trousers and watered the floor.” A third woman - ‘Maid No.3’ – claimed Jackson suffered a bed bug out-break at his home. “I’m telling you, he was the dirtiest, most unsanitary person in Hollywood.” “Everybody he brought in to clean, and some-times we’d even get cleaning services to come in for the extra help. Everybody was repulsed. His bedroom smelled horrible. If everyone else was like me, they hated going in there,” she told The Post.

“The current regime has made remarkable strides in promoting the empowerment of the youth who must take up the initiative to exploit the opportunities instead of lament-ing,” Noor said. “It is up to the youth to take up the challenges positively and work hard to get and utilise wisely what the Government is offering,” he said.He said the Sh6 billion Uwezo Fund has been channeled to county

levels as have been National Youth Enterprise Fund, Women Enterprise Fund and the 30 per cent Govern-ment Procurement Opportunities (AGPO) in bold initiatives by the Government to empower the youth who have long been marginalised. He said the ministry is implement-ing new procurement policy and contracts worth Sh1.57 billion already allocated to the group. He was speaking at Mathari Hos-pital in Nairobi during this year’s

United Nations International Youth Week. At least 300 volunteers were in-volved in a major clean up exercise at the facility.Noor, who represented the Principal Secretary, said the event was in line with this year’s theme of the day “Youth and Mental Health” as part of the week-long celebrations. The actual International Youth Day is set for tomorrow. He said the clean-up was aimed at

promoting the involvement of youth in community work and reduce the stigma associated with patients suf-fering from mental related ailments.Noor said drug addiction was among the main causes of mental ailments as data showed at least one in every four Kenyans suffered from the disease. The event was also attended by the Director of Youth Affairs Timothy Gakuu, Youth Ambassador to UN Wambui Kahara, senior staff at the

Mathari Hospital and other officials from United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP).Other organisations which took part in the clean-up included the Nation-al Youth Service, National Youth Council and the Nairobi county government.

Voting got off to a slow start in Mathare as constituents trooped to the ballot box to pick a new MP from a pool of nine candidates. There was low turn-out across the 14 stations who braved a chilly morning. With the election scheduled on a working day, critics said this may

contribute to a low turn-out.But voting lines grew longer as the day progressed. No cases were reported by the time of going to press.Nine candidates are seeking to represent the constituency in the National Assembly after the nullification of former MP George

Wanjohi.Wanjohi is defending the seat on a TNA ticket. His closest challenger is ODM’s Steven Kariuki who petitioned the nullification of Wanjohi’s election last year.Others in the race are former Kasarani MP William Omondi,

Barack Obat Blasto, Nixon Kavai Inziria, Mariam Muthoni Macharia all vying as independent candidates. The race also include Billian Okoth Ojiwa (National Labour Party), Sammy Jentruo Mudanya (Progressive Party of Kenya) and Fwamba Nyangangali Crispus of Maendeleo Democratic Party.

The constituency has a total of 88, 053 registered voters spread across Mlango Kubwa, Mabatini, Ngei, Huruma and Kiamaiko wards. The stations were due to close at 5pm today after which vote counting gets underway.A total of 690 IEBC officials will oversee the poll-election.

Five suspected thugs were last night shot dead by police in Embakasi and three home-made guns recovered from them.Report say police responded to an alarm by residents who were being robbed and gunned down the five at Quarry area of the larger estate at a dark alley that is popular with pedestrians.Embakasi OCPD Apollo Wanyonyi said the men, all aged below 25 had been attacking and robbing pedestrians when they were alerted.“We also recovered some of the stolen valuables from the suspects. The gang members had declined to surrender when police approached the scene,” said Wanyonyi. The shooting happened after a number of pe-destrians had apparently been robbed.Locals had been complaining of increased mug-ging incidents in the area.A witness said police rushed to the scene and staked it out for a while witnessing the attacks before they struck. The bodies of the suspects were later taken to the city mortuary. The killing increased to more than 30, the number of suspects who have been shot dead by police in the city in the past three weeks as war on crime intensifies. At the weekend, a suspected thug was shot dead and three guns with more than 80 bullets recov-ered from him in a shootout in Westlands.Police say an employee of UN offices in Nairobi was shot and wounded in the shooting but he is out of danger and that two others managed to escape on foot. The employee was passing by when he was caught up in the shooting.

A Taiwanese national has been ar-rested at the Jomo Kenyatta Interna-tional Airport after he was found with counterfeit dollar bills worth Sh21.2 millionThe money had been wrapped in a pa-per bag which the man carried when it was detected by customs officials. The man in his late 30s had arrived aboard Ethiopian airline from Abu Dhabi last night when he was inter-

cepted while carrying the 250,000 US dollars. Police say he intended to use the money in Nairobi because his final destination was here.“His final destination was in Nairobi at least according to his travelling doc-uments. Unless he intended to move to other places,” said airport CID boss Joseph Ngisa.Ngisa said had the useless bills passed the screening by mistake they could

ruin the economy. His travelling doc-uments showed he is a regular visitor in Nairobi. The suspect is expected in court Monday to face charges of being in possession of fake money. The charge can attract up to 14 years in jail. Cases of drug trafficking, ivory traf-ficking and other crimes have been fluctuating with police making efforts to contain them.

The popular assumption that women speak 20,000 words a day compared to men’s 7000 is a myth. New research has shown that both sexes speak a relatively similar amount of words, about 16,000 a day.An analysis conducted by re-searchers at the University of California in 2013 found that across the studies examined, men actually talked more, but the difference was fairly small. Another study conducted in the same year by a team including the renowned social psychologist, James Penne-baker found no significant dif-ference between the amount men and women spoke. Last week, a study was published

that may explain why previ-ous researchers got it wrong. David Lazer, a professor at North-eastern University in Boston, did actual research by fitting each of his test subjects with a “sociometer”, a device used to keep track of their conversations. Results showed that the talk-ativeness of men versus wom-en depended on the size of the group. In groups of six people or more, men did most of the talking, whereas women spent more time than men speaking with just one or two other people. “In the one setting that is more collaborative, we see the women choosing to work together.”

Uganda will not include people living on the disputed Migingo Island in the national popula-tion and housing census that begins on August 28. National population coor-dinator Francis Mashate said they decided not to conduct the census on the island until the rightful owner is determined. “We decided to leave Migingo Island out as we prepare for the national popula-tion and housing census because there is a conflict of ownership between Uganda and Kenya. There-fore, it is risky to dispatch our staff to conduct the exercise there,” he said. Uganda will count her people between August 28 and September 6.

Rwandan authorities today placed a German student with Ebola-like symptoms in isolation as it tested a possible Ebola case for the first time since the deadly virus broke out in West Africa. The German was said to be a medical student but had recently spent time in Liberia where the virus has killed hundreds. “Samples from the suspected case have been sent for testing to an international accredited laboratory for approval, results will be available in 48 hours,” the health min-istry said in a statement.

Kenya National Commis-sion on Human Rights (KNHRC) has joined calls to press for a repeat of last month’s police recruit-ment. In a joint statement with Police Reforms Working Group-Kenya, the KNHRC says there is no way the National Police Service Commission could investigate an exercise which it presided over. “It makes the commission as a judge, jury and execu-tioner it its own case. Such an audit cannot redeem an irredeemably flawed recruitment exercise.”

Pedestrians crossing roads at non-designated points will be jailed for six years for attempting to commit suicide.Nairobi Traffic boss Charlton Mureithi has raised the charge for such an offence to curb road accidents which are often caused by pedestrians crossing busy roads at the wrong points. With pedestrians accounting for 46 per cent of those killed in accidents, the Government has embarked on an exercise that seek to reduce such deaths. These include the rehabilitation of footbridges which pedestrians have shunned citing filth and muggers who have turned them into strategic alleys. In Nairobi alone, up to 479 pedestrians have been killed in the last six months in what highlights the need for tough measures to curb unnecessary deaths. And meeting top police officers, Mureithi said last week pedestrians crossing the

road at undesignated points will be arrested and charged with attempted suicide.“It is the same as attempted suicide when you ignore a footbridge or a crossing point and chose to cross elsewhere because you are exposing yourself to being hit by a vehicle,” he said.Such offenders have in the past been charged with obstructing motorists but police have introduced a more serious offence of attempted suicide to discourage the habit.Thika Superhighway, Jogoo Road, Valley Road, Mbagathi Way, Waiyaki Way, Lang’ata Road and Mombasa Road are some of the most notorious stretches where accidents involving pedestrians are common despite the presence of footbridges. The National Transport and Safety Authority has embarked on rehabilitating the footbridges and clearly marking crossing points to encourage their usage.

A woman climbed a barbed wire fence at Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia, Canada, on Sunday as she struggled to stop the plane she thought was carrying her husband.A Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesman Sgt Al LeBlanc said: “Her intent was to stop the aircraft from taking off. She jumped the security fence, but was nowhere near the aircrafts. The airport staff and the Mounted Police responded right away and apprehended her.”The woman climbed over a 10-foot security fence with angled barb wire around 8:30 am local time, according to Peter Spurway, the airport’s communications vice president.“She was immediately spotted by the control tower. One of our folks was on the area and apprehended her.

Outgoing Kenya Airways Chief Executive Titus Naikuni has been appointed chairman of Rift Valley Railways’ Board of Directors.Naikuni will chair the board which has been reconstituted following a recent restructuring of shareholders that will take effect in November. Commenting on his appointment, Naikuni said: “RVR’s recent achievements and the full funding of its investment and growth plan, demonstrates  that it is uniquely positioned to become a high performing railway network that can spur trade and economic growth in the region.” “I am excited about this opportunity to work with the board and staff to build a robust and efficient rail transport solution which is the backbone of a thriving economy,” he said.Naikuni joined the Kenya Airways as Group CEO in 2003 and spearheaded one of the most noteworthy and rapid expansions of

Police in the Chinese city of Shenzhen have come up with a novel “eye for an eye” method of punishing drivers who misuse their headlights and dazzle other road-users.According to an apparently jovial posting on the official social media account for the Shenzhen traffic police department, “from now on” anyone doing so will be made to stare at the police’s own full-beam headlights for five minutes. It might initially be thought that the warning on Sina Weibo – the closest Chinese equivalent to Twitter – was a joke on the part of the police. It is, after all, punctuated with a large “ha-ha” laughing emoticon. But the post has also been accompanied by a photograph apparently showing the punishment being meted out to a driver. The image shows a man sat on a stool in front of an empty police van with its lights on full, while an officer stands in attendance.

an African airline. The company’s revenues grew threefold to over Sh105 billion, the fleet doubled fleet increased passenger numbers.  The Douala crash in May 2007 that killed all 114 passengers on board along with crew members remains the biggest stain on his reign. Prior to joining the national carrier, Naikuni was

Group Managing Director of Magadi Soda Company (now Tata Chemicals Magadi), the largest producer of soda ash in Africa. He joined the company in 1979 as a trainee engineer and rose to Group Managing Director in 1996. In 1999, he was appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Transport and

Communication as part of a team of experts engaged by the Government to drive economic reforms. “To have such a seasoned and transformational business leader chair the RVR board is a big win for the company”, said Ahmed Heikal, chairman of Qalaa Holdings, the leading shareholders of the rail firm.

Calm in Gaza as foes agree on new ceasefireUneasy calm descended on Gaza late Sunday after another 72-hour cease-fire was agreed as negotiators seek to restore lasting peace in the troubled border. The temporary calm was agreed to allow for negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, Egyptian officials leading the peace talks said.Senior Hamas official Izzat Risheq said Palestinians agreed to the cease-fire, adding that

this would be the last time Palestinians are willing to participate in negotiations.Egypt had earlier asked both sides to resume the cease-fire at midnight local time (5 p.m. ET Sunday) so that they can resume indirect talks in Cairo, as well as to allow for humanitarian help to get to the victims of the fighting.Israel has resisted in-depth talks as long as Gaza rockets continue to head toward its

territory. The rockets have been met with Israeli airstrikes in recent days, dimming hopes of a cease-fire in the Israeli-Gaza conflict that has raged for more than a month.Israeli negotiators left talks last week. On Sunday, Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon said they would not return until rockets from Gaza stop. “We will not negotiate under fire,” he said. However, in anticipation

of cease-fire sticking, Israel promised to send a delegation to Cairo today, according to a source who spoke on condition of anonymity.Palestinians said an Israeli no-show means they are walking away, too.“If the Israelis do not come, we will leave to consult with our leadership,” said Risheq, who is a member of the Palestinian negotiation team. “We gave our demands to the Egyptian

delegation seven days ago. We have not have received any official response yet.”Hamas, the Islamic militant group and political party that controls Gaza, has said it will not settle.“We will not return to the status quo,” it said in a statement on its website. “The resistance will continue in all its strength, and we will not stop pushing for our people’s demands.”

Stroke victims recover after stem cell doseInfusing stem cells into the brain may help boost recovery after a stroke, according to a pilot study by Imperial College London. Scientists believe the cells encourage new blood vessels to grow in damaged areas of the brain. They found most patients were able to walk and look after themselves independently by the end of the trial, despite having suffered severe strokes. In this early trial, which was designed primarily to look at the safety of this approach - researchers harvested stem cells from the bone marrow of five people who had recently had a stroke.

Drunk driver hits The Rock’s mum

World Wrestling Entertain-ment (WWE) star The Rock (Inset), whose real name is Dwayne Johnson, says his mother, Ata Maivia-John-son and his cousin Lina Fanene were struck head on by a drunk driver last week ... and luckily, they survived. The two were driving home from a fundraiser their family runs every

year -- the Usos Founda-tion Banquet -- when they were crashed into by the alleged drunk driver. Both women were rushed to a local hospital, where Ata was hospitalized for 3 nights. It is not clear what injuries the 65-year old sustained. The Rock post-ed a picture of the crash and his mom’s white Es-calade - the one he bought

her for Christmas in 2012 -was written off. Same goes for the other car in-volved. The Rock tweeted, “First reaction is to find the person who did this and do unrelenting harm to them. But then you realize the most important thing is my family lived through this and we can hug each other that much tighter these days.”

What others said today...

Raila’s bid to secure one million signature: CORD and ODM leader Raila Odinga is sitting atop a storm sparked off by the Opposition’s referendum plan that begins this week with the start of a campaign to collect one million signatures from voters. That bid, announced at CORD’s Saba Saba rally in June, was initially dismissed by the ruling Jubilee coalition’s hawks, but CORD could be the unlikely beneficiary of a furore sparked by governors pushing for their own referendum...

Governors’ strategy to win referendum: Governors have offered basketfuls of goodies for Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) to win support for a referendum to strengthen devolved governments. The sweeteners that governors have offered include car grants, a special fund to run wards and greater legislative powers. Governors view MCAs as crucial players in the push for the referendum...

Ruto targets small tribes ahead of 2017 polls: Deputy President William Ruto is slowly consolidating support among small and pastoral tribes as he prepares for 2017. Although the Deputy President has not said whether he will run for President in 2017, those close to him say he is determined to maintain his support just incase. ‘The Deputy President remains loyal to President Uhuru kenyatta’. says a Ruto confidant...

Governors woo MCAs with ‘gifts’ for support: Apparently realising that the biggest

hurdle to their referendum quest could be mounted by Member of County Assemblies, governors have resorted to wooing them with goodies to melt them into supporting the cause. There had been no love lost between governors and MCAs, with the latter often dangling the impeachment card to control the county bosses...

Orange to insure subscribers Orange has partnered with CIC Insurance Group to launch a mobile phone insurance cover. Dubbed Orange Bima, the package will give mobile subscribers chance to insure their devices against theft or damage.

Phones will be covered for damages up to Sh40,000.The sign-up for life’ service will insure the phone for up to Sh100,000. Customers will pay Sh1 a day using airtime. This is the lowest per-day

rate for any insurance service available in the country.“Insurance policies are important solutions that help cover risk, thereby saving on substantial amounts of money in the event of unforeseen occurrences,” Orange

CEO Mickael Ghossein said after the official launch last week. The package comes as Kenyans are encouraged to insure handheld devices. Though Orange claims to have the most affordable per-day rate, such services are not new.

Mobile phone insurance has been in Kenya from as early as 2011 or earlier. As phone owners can fall prey to loss, theft or damage, insurance can help in replacing the devices or having them fixed by professionals.

Kenyans spend about 10 per cent of their salary on transport every month. A study compiled by PLOS One researchers Djesika Amendah, Steven Buigut and Shukri Mohamed revealed that lower, middle class and upper middle class Kenyans spend a 10th of income commuting.

l Those earning Sh50,000 a month spend Sh5,000 on bus fare and other forms of transport. These include taxis, Tuk Tuks and motorcycles while those earning Sh10,000 use about Sh1,000 on travel expenses.

l The study titled, ‘Coping Strategies among Urban Poor: Evidence from Nairobi, the scholars discovered that if a person’s income rises, their spending on transport also goes up. A person who normally walks to work starts boarding vehicles as soon as the amount of money they earn goes up.

l A similar study by researchers from Egerton University showed that those with an income of Sh30,000 to Sh40,000, usually college graduates, spend Sh100 a day on transport. This is still about 10 per cent of the monthly salary.

l The Egerton study indicated that since income determines a person’s transport budget, most Kenyans live closer to places of work to ensure less expenditure on fare.

Scangroup, Africa’s leading marketing services provider, has announced a 151 per cent growth in its pre-tax profit for the first half of the year helped by a jump in interest income. The advertising firm, which also operates in Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda, said pre-tax profit grew to Sh253.85 million from Sh101.16 million in a simi-lar period last year. The growth, ScanGroup said in a published financial statement on Friday, was boosted by inclusion of Millward Brown, its new subsidiary market research firm, into the Group’s per-formance results.ScanGroup said it grew

interest income almost five-fold to Sh110 million from Sh20 million in the review period. These profits were lifted by a one-off payment from Cavendish Square Holding, a subsidiary of British firm, WPP, which raised its stake in Scangroup last year to 50.1 per cent from 36.6 per cent. The advertising firm’s earn-ings per share rose to 0.42 shillings from 0.02 shillings.“The Group has reported significant growth in rev-enue and profit during the first half of this year. This is expected to continue during the second half of the year with further improvement in operating profit margins,” the company said.

Wine fraudster Rudy Kurniawan, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail and ordered to pay $20 million (Sh1.8 billion) for his role in selling millions of dollars worth of fake wine. The 37-year-old con artist, who operated in the US has also been ordered to pay $28.4 million (Sh2.5 billion) in restitution to victims, who include billionaire William Koch. Mr Kurniawan is the first person ever to go to jail for selling fake wine in the US.2012.

Fish in rice field helps improve farmer’s yieldTony Odero, a 40-year-old father of two has been growing rice and rearing fish in the same plantation, a move that has led to an unexplained increase in his rice production. His yields are higher than other farm-ers who only plant rice.By examining Kenya’s Yala Swamp, a Chinese study has confirmed that cultivating rice and fish together stops disease, increases yields, and cuts the need for both fertilisers and pesticides. The Yala Swamp farmers, near Lake

Victoria, have grown fish and rice for decades in the same flooded paddy fields. Their crops are rarely attacked by common rice diseases such as sheath blast, which is responsible for some almost half of rice losses in the country. “We just thought rice in this area had been blessed,” says Odero. Now science has found a logical ex-planation for their mysterious yields. A six-year study conducted in China found that when fish were introduced into flooded paddy fields, farmers

used less pesticide and fertiliser for the same amount of grain as in con-ventional farms that only grew rice. The study explained that Tthe fish provide a source of fertiliser from their droppings, eat harmful insects and help to circulate oxygen around the rice field. In 2008, half of the rice in Kenya’s Mwea plantation was destroyed by the rice sheath blast. Mwea supplies most of Kenyan rice mainly as Bas-mati and Pishori rice.Using the method, farmers can there-

fore make substantial savings, which typically represent up to 70 per cent of their total cost of production.During planting, Odero builds dykes on the outskirts of the rice fields. This aids in keeping the fish in their own area of the rice fields and enabling vegetable cultivation around other parts of the field. “It hasn’t been as easy as it sounds. There were times when the fish would choke, because we didn’t know how to tend to them,” explains Odero.

Sameer Africa Limited, a Kenya-based compa-ny in the manufacture, importation and sale of tyres, was last week’s loser with a 17.11 per cent stock price decrease from Sh7.60 to Sh6.30. Sameer has recently is-sued a profit warning for the year ending Decem-ber 2014, as it predicts that its net earnings will decline by more than a quarter (25 per cent) from last year. 0The dip in earnings is

mainly due to the company’s one-off gain last year of Sh255.3 million that was booked from the sale of land.Sameer is also trying to grow its export sales and enter new regional markets, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa and Djibouti in order to reduce the company’s decreasing market share in Kenya.

Home Afrika was last week’s winner with a 20.90 per

reported a 25.4 per cent profit drop (to Sh80.6 million) in the first year of its listing at the NSE according to analysts at Sterling Capital.Nevertheless, the property developer has plenty of new projects coming and is relying

on Migaa Housing, its flagship project which is to be completed in 2016. With the Migaa project, Home Afrika has so far, recorded Sh1.5 billion in sales. In 2013, the company recorded revenues of Sh650.6 million up from Sh348.6 million in 2012. Home Afrika plans to implement at least 10 new projects over a span of 5 years. Overall, the upcoming projects are valued at Sh20 billion.

White is for the bride, don’t wear it to a wedding

A good bra and underpants are the foundation of what one decides to wear but most women hardly pay any attention to them. A survey conducted by ConsumerReports, a product review organisation, showed that matching bra and underwear is not a priority for most women. At least 58 per cent of the women said they never or rarely match bras and panties.Finding a way to wear matching bras and panties every day can be a challenge. Most women admit that what they wear underneath will depend on what they wear at the top. For example most tend to pick their bras depending on what top they are wearing; a white bra for a white top or a demi bra for a lower-cut top. Matching your bra and underwear gives one a boost of confidence. How one feels underneath will reflect on the outside and you will feel great the whole day. You will also feel sexier. Matching bras and underwear enhances your body’s natural beauty, it streamlines your body and makes you look taller and slimmer. One way of doing this is try buying complementary underwear for every bra bought and vice versa, before you know it, all your underwear and bras will be matching.

Wearing white to a wedding is considered a major offence to a bride, especially if she is one who values tradition. It may seem like an old-fashioned rule, given the time and age where tradition is not valued as much but it is the bride’s day to stand out and she does that by being the only one wearing white. The thing about white, is that it is a standout colour. In the day, it reflects in the sun and shines in one’s eyes, at night, it is visible no matter how dark and in a crowd, it stands out, drawing all stares towards you.

Even if the bride opts for a different colour for her gown, as a guest, you are not permitted to gpr for white. If you really have to, then the noble thing to do is “ask for permission” from the bride and make sure she is truly okay with you wearing white -chances are she will not be. But even if she approves of your choice, other members in the party will give you the evil eye for attempting to steal the spotlight from the bride. The only exception to this rule, is if it is a themed wedding whereby all the guests are requested to wear white.

Match your underwear for confidence

Wedding gown shopping mistakes that brides make

By Lisa Ang’iro

Sunday was a day to remember for 13 couples who wedded in a mass ceremony at the Shree Cutchhi Leva Patel Samaj community hall in Nairobi West. The mass wedding, the Samooh Lagna Mahotsav, is an annual event organised by the Shree Cutchhi Leva Patel Samaj (SCLPS) community. Participating couples come from all over the continent.Approximately 8000 people from various communities attended the wedding.Mass weddings are a cost saving

option for couples and the community plays a key role in making the day a success. “We have been doing this for 20 years now, and it is to help couples save on costs for their weddings, “ said Dhirajlal Ratna the Vice Chair of the Shree Cutchhi Leva Patel Samaj community. Well-wishers chip in with money, food and gifts for the couples. ‘’It is a way to help others in our community and people make pledges as soon as the dates for the next Lagna is announced,’’ said Ratna. In the 20 years that the Lagna has taken place, 280 couples have been wedded.

You just got engaged?Congratulations! Now you can start planning and shopping for your wedding. Wedding dress shopping is one of the most fun things about planning a wedding. Sometimes it can be stressful if not planned out properly. There are a few factors to consider before going out to shop for that dream dress. Timing is key when shopping for your dress. If one shops too early before

other details like the date and venue are hashed out, it can be a recipe for disaster. If for example you are getting married on a beach you will need an appropriate dress for the ceremony. If the bride does not time her shopping for dress well, she may not get her dress on time or might lose out on a great dress because some need to be ordered early from the designers. It is best to shop for a dress six or seven months prior to your wedding to

allow for enough time for ordering and alterations. Consider your budget. Do not try on dresses that are way above the price you are able to pay. When a bride tries on such a dress, she will most definitely fall in love with it. That would mean breaking the bank to get the dress and that will cause a ripple effect all through your wedding budget leaving you in debt. When brides go shopping they tend

to bring an entourage of family and friends along with them. Entourages are not bad, but considering there are a lot of opinions in one room, it can be overwhelming. Bring only one or two people with you when dress shopping. You do not need to bring all your cousins, high school and college friends or people you met the other day in the lift. Keep your entourage small and you will find your dress a lot quicker.

gogirl

Last year I discovered that my man was cheating on me with an ex-girlfriend. Before I left him, I made some investigations and caught him going out with the girl. I was so pissed off I didn’t want to see him again. Two weeks later, he looked for me to offer apologies

but I did not give him the chance. He has been bothering and begging me to forgive him and asking me to give him another chance. I still love him but I can’t trust him anymore. A part of me wants to let him in but the other hesitates. What do I do?

A: This is not a decision someone can make for you. You are in the best position to know what you want for yourself. If you choose to take him back, you must be ready to forgive and move on. You will have to overlook his past philandering ways and start afresh. But before you do so,

you should be convinced he loves you as much as you do or more. Let him prove he is worth your love and time. But if you can’t handle his antics anymore, make it clear to him that what you two had is over. There is more to a relationship than just love.So what will it be?

touchspot

Imagine sitting alone in a bar sipping a drink when a waiter baffles you with a glass of fine wine from a gorgeous lady. you have never met. But when you look in her direction, she responds with a soft, pow-erful wink.“That is so sexy and attractive. I love it when a woman cuts to the chase and flirts with me, especial-ly if I like her,” says Peter Waweru. Other people find it outrageous for a woman to strike the match. Times have changed and so have traditions. Yet there are those who still feel that men should chase. Dr Chris Hart, a relation-ship expert says basically, men compete to be chosen by women. “When a man and woman’s eye meet across a room’, he’ll watch for her reaction and only walk over if it’s inviting.”He also notes that women want to see the guy pluck up his courage and prove he can approach her.Perhaps people don’t know that initiating the game doesn’t mean throwing yourself at someone. All that is needed is a signaling eye contact and maybe a slight smile. Grace Njeri believes making the first move, makes the woman’ look desperate.

Should a woman make the first move?

Catherine Ndereba has successfully represented Kenya in long-distance races since 1994 when she joined the Prisons Training College in Ruiru.Ndereba, who was born on July 31, 1972 in Nyeri, has produced outstanding results on the track, settling for bronze, silver and gold in her career. Ndereba first represented Kenya in the 1995 in Seoul, Korea, setting a personal record of 31:35 in the 10 kilometre race, settling for bronze. In 1996 she came second in the US Track and Field’s World Road Running Rankings. Runner’s World magazine and Road Racer of the Year by Running Times named her the road Runner of the Year. She won gold in the Boston and Chicago marathons in 2000, with the Chicago race the fifth-fastest ever at 2:21:33. She also conquered Boston and Chicago marathons in 2004 and 2005.The year 2001 was a success year for

her. She set a world marathon record of 2:18.47. The following week, she won the Avon Global Championships 10K in 31:02 in Budapest, Hungary. The following year, Ndereba finished second behind another Kenyan, Margaret Okayo in Boston marathon. The year 2003 saw her clinch the athletics World Championships. Ndereba won bronze the following year at the Olympics in Greece. The also finished third in the Beijing Marathon in October 2011. Among other titles and graces of medals, she has been nickname ‘Catherine the Great’. A mother of one girl, Jane, was recognised as the Kenyan Sports Woman of the Year Awards in 2004 and 2005. Former President Mwai Kibaki crowned her with the Order of the Golden Warrior in 2005. She lives in Nairobi with her husband Anthony Maina.

How marriages generate space for the ‘side dish’ “I am not happy in my mar-riage,” “I will leave them for you,” and “I am staying with them only for the children.” These are some of the lies a cheating spouse will tell their ‘side-dish.’ A research by Associated Press, Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, shows that 41 per cent of married people had cheated on their spouses. However, they will not leave the spouse for the one they had cheated with. They not only want the excitement of sex with another person but also need the stability of marital home life. A study by Ruth Hous-ton, an infidelity expert and the author of the book ‘Is He Cheating?’ showed that only three per cent of cheating spouses divorce partners to marry the ‘side dishes’. When they do, the marriages have a high failure rate of between 75 and 90 per cent. If they cheated with you, there are

high chances that they will cheat on you because having an affair is their solution to marital problems.Take the example of Marina Wheeler, the second wife of British MP Boris Johnson. While Johnson was still married to his precious wife, he impregnated Wheeler (his then mistress) before leaving the wife to marry Wheeler. Two years later, he was in an-other affair and was cheating on the earlier mistress with another. When you marry a ‘side dish’, there is a vacancy that is created. The thrill of an affair; the secret liaisons and romantic weekends are all gone. All that is left is a “dull marriage” because of lack of excitement. An affair depends on a mar-riage. It needs the marriage to look good, in comparison that is; if the passion in a marriage is gone, an affair can fill the gap.

Heartbreakers do not mind the pain they inflict in their partners. They go and seek to return to the same relationship in spite of the agony their partners went through when they departed. It happens once they run around and find no solace in their new catches.Christina Perri says in her ‘Jar of Hearts’ lyrics that the hurt

heart learn to live on without the partner after wallowing in agony. She says the resentment that has developed cannot allow him back. Her heart has moved on too. She gave him all he wanted, but he let her down, shredding her heart. He is longing for what he was given freely, but never reciprocated. Things have now changed. He

cannot get her again. She wants his heart to catch a cold, to feel the pain he has already inflicted on her too.Her love has grown to hatred. She hates the first time they met, kissed, and she surrender her heart to him. She has now grown too strong for him. She cannot fall into him anymore. Because he has earned the brand of a heartbreaker.

NEW SkiPPEr:Arteta has been named new Arsenal captain following Thomas Vermaelen’s transfer to Barcelona.

gLorY girL: cherono is determined to win the 5,000 metres race at the African Championships finals tonight.

Arsene Wenger has named Mikel Arteta Arsenal captain following Thomas Vermaelen’s transfer to Barcelona. The Spaniard helped guide the Gunners to a comprehensive 3-0 win over Premier League champions Manchester City in the Community Shield. He has been handed the armband for the pending season with Per Mertesacker as his deputy. Arteta, 32, enters a third full season at the Emirates and previously captained Everton under David Moyes. Asked who would take over from Vermaelen as captain, Wenger said: “One: Arteta and two: Mertesacker. Arteta will be captain and Mertesacker vice-captain.” Outgoing skipper Vermaelen joined Luis Enrique’s Barca for Sh2.8billion on Saturday, bringing an end to his five-year association with Arsenal. Wenger praised the 28-year-old: “I allowed Thomas Vermaelen to leave before the end of the season. He was not playing regularly, he behaved

outstandingly and with dignity.

It’s difficult to keep that kind of player at the top level if he doesn’t play regularly.” Wenger will look to find replacement for Vermaelen in the transfer market but admits it will not be easy to sign a quality defender before the window closes at the end of the month. The Arsenal boss also considers new signing Calum Chambers as a natural centre-back after he was impressed with the 19-year-old’s display against City. “You look at Vermaelen, there were two huge clubs in for him and they had a look and could not find anybody better,” Wenger added. “If I can find another one I will do it but it is not easy to find. Maybe a guy who can play in two or three different positions will be

better for us. “I see Chambers as a centre-back. I saw him there when I bought him. He was outstanding today for a 19-year-old, it was very promising. It’s impressive because he does not have a long history in this position. If all goes well, he has a good career in front of him. He can challenge both centre-backs and that is what we want.”

Kenya commercial Bank (KCB) made two wins in two after beating Home-boyz RFC 21-5 to take the Safaricom Dala Sev-ens on Sunday at the ASK Mamboleo Showground in Kisumu City. That was their second series triumph on the bounce after the Kabeberi 7s honours last week.Philip Wamae spotted a gap in the Homeboyz defence, exploited it and scored under the posts with Ken Moseti convert-ing for a 7-0 lead.Edwin Salamba stretched KCB’s lead, finishing off Jacob Ojee’s spadework with Moseti converting for a 14-0 half time lead.Mike Wanjala’s uncon-verted effort brought the scores to 14-5 for Homeboyz who were the Kabeberi 7s winners last season.A try by Oliver Mang’eni and a conversion by Mo-seti rounded up the score as KCB won first Dala Sevens title since 2006.KCB coach Curtis Olago was full praise of his squad after putting on a gallant show for a second series win.“Credit goes to the boys. As I said last, we the series is very tough, we need the same spirit in the subsequent legs in Mombasa next week and Nakuru a week later,” he saidThe bankers beat Reso-lution Impala Saracens 10-0, building on a 5-0 half time lead despite being denied possession for large spells, to romp to the final with Darwin Mukidza and Fabian Olando crossing the try line. Homeboyz reached the decider with a 19-7 win over Top Fry Nakuru with their semi-final all square at the break.

Louis van Gaal (pictured) has wasted no time in revolutionising Manchester United on his arrival at Old Trafford. The Dutchman has bought exciting new additions to the fold in Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, with more new faces in the pipeline.During the club’s successful pre-season tour, the new manager admitted there would be several casualties of his squad revamp.‘You have to give the player a chance to make a transfer when I see that his prospects to play are

not so high. You have to say it in advance because it’s too late after August 31. I will tell payers after the tour.”Marouane Fellaini: The Belgian was United’s sole signing last sum-mer, and his mediocre performanc-es in the middle of the park became synonymous with David Moyes’ dismal reign. Javier Hernandez: ‘Chicharito’ has an impressive goals to games ratio in a United shirt, but his detractors suggest he needs more to his game. He’s well behind the likes of Wayne

Rooney and Robin van Persie in the pecking order. Who’s interested: Juventus and Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Tottenham and Southamp-ton are just some of the clubs to have expressed an interest.Anderson:The Portuguese has failed to live up to his reputation, with a torrid spell at Old Trafford rife with injury. With no pre-season form behind him, by now he is well down the list of Louis van Gaal’s midfielders.Who’s interested: Clubs in Portu-gal and Brazil have shown interest

but little else. His displays on loan at Fiorentina did little to impress. Anderson may be difficult to shift.Nani: The mercurial winger has had a career of ups and downs at Old Trafford, but it may finally be time to move on. Who’s interested: Juventus, Inter Milan, Valencia and Arsenal still rate the Portuguese winger despite his inconsistency. Shinji Kagawa: Sir Alex bought the hotly-tipped Japanese playmaker in from Borussia Dortmund to revolu-tionise the Red Devils’ attacking.

Arsenal fans’ abuse is just stupid, says Nasri

Nasri calls arsenal fans stupidManchester City midfielder Samir Nasri says the abuse he receives from Arsenal support-ers is “stupid” as he prepared to take on the Gunners in Sunday’s Community Shield showdown. As expected, the French play-maker got more flak from the north London club’s supporters on Sunday as Arsernal prevailed 3-0 to lift the FA Community Shield. The Man City man has got the vitriol ever since his big-money switch to the Etihad in 2011 - with many believing the move was financially motivated. But Nasri has hit back at the taunts ahead of Wembley’s show-piece, claiming he was never in love with Arsenal and that he left the club to further his career. “I just think the abuse I get is stupid. I’m not an Arsenal fan,

I am not from London,” the 27-year-old told reporters. “To be honest, we are players and we are just looking at what are the best interests for us and our careers. “When Manchester City came for me it was the best choice to come here. Since coming to City I have won trophies and I have a better life so I am really happy about everything. “If the fans can’t move on it’s too bad. I am not trying to have a problem with that. They do what they have to do and they love their club. “They see that as a treason or that I betrayed them but it’s not that. I’m not like that. I just look what’s best for me and that’s what Bacary Sagna did, what Emman-uel Adebayor did and what Kolo Toure did.

JUBILANT: Manchester City’s Sami Nasri celebrates a goal. He said it’s stupid for Arsenal fans to keep abusing him for leaving the club.

silverware, Arsenal have now won two trophies in four months and Ramsey is convinced his team are destined for more success in the coming season.“The atmosphere in the camp is great. We want to

play here every week!” Ramsey said.“I have just become a lot more composed in front of goal, realising I have more time than I did in the past.“We have prepared well and it paid off as we came out 3-0 winners. They couldn’t get near us for the first 25 minutes.”Giroud’s brilliant 30-yard effort was the pick of the goals, but the France striker claimed he was slightly fortunate to have scored from such a distance.“I felt I could shoot, I was a bit lucky but I did what I really wanted to do and scored,” he said.“I think we will be stronger this year. We are getting better and better and I think we will do very well

Sources say the former Gor Mahia tactician was involved in a heated argument with players after the match after he blamed them for showing a poor attitude. The source said the club top management reached at decision to send the Croat packing after a meeting which lasted for almost five hours. after winning the league unbeaten and hammering Yanga 5-0 on the way to the title.Logarusic signed a new one-year contract three weeks ago. The contract included terms that he had to change how the team played and win the league this season after they finishing a disappointing fourth place last season. Angaza hold JMJ as Copa finals kick off

Samuel Eto’o’s 2012 pledge of establishing a soccer academy in Kenya has begun taking shape with the construction of the institution’s facilities at the site in Laikipia.Construction of the academy, which will provide facilities and training for 40 youngsters

to develop their football talent while getting an education, started in in January 2014 and is set to be complete by the end of this month. The facilities include a 1,500-seat stadium. One of the unique features of the field is that it has been designed to

sit on a giant 1.5 million-litre water reservoir expected to be recharged every rainy season.“On the playfield are porous tiles to allow water to pass through to the underground reservoir,” said David Turn-bull, who designed the stadi-um. The project including

the stadium will cost a total of Sh42.5 million. The Kenyan academy is one of the three the Cameroonian, who has played for Real Ma-drid, Barcelona, and Chelsea among others, is constructing across Africa, with the others in Cameroon and Gabon.

Champions JMJ Academy were held to a surprise 1-1 draw by Angaza Academy of Central as the 2014 edition of the COPA Coca-Cola national finals got under way at the World Hope Centre in Kawangware this morning. After a goalless first half, Mark Ochieng’ put JMJ ahead in the 60th minute before Victor Kamau replied for Angaza three minutes later. A total of six matches will be on the cards. Coach Shaban Baraza will be disappointed with the draw against unfancied Angaaza after expressing confidence that his will start well as they target Saturday’s finals.

Nairobi’s Beijing Raiders and Cherangany Starlets of Rift Valley were due in the field next in the first girls’ match of the day.Last year’s losing finalist’s Kisumu Lakers start against Tharaka Young Stars, a match the lakeside outfit are heavily favoured to win. Debutants Nairobi’s Kibra Queens and Shinyalu Girls from Western will clash in the second Group ‘A’ match before the Group ‘B’ match between Nyamira Ladies and Maragwa Queens at 2pm. Kitale Youth will play Young Muslims from North Eastern in the last game of the day at 3.15pm. The final will be at the City Stadium.
