The Government has embarked on a plan that will ensure the construc-tion of 10,000 kilometres of roads in the next five years.Infrastructure Principal Secretary John Mosonik said funds for the project will be sourced from the pri-vate sector in a new annuity model that does not rely on State funding.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was ear-lier today due to officially commis-sion the plan that will allow faster completion of projects.“Sh3 billion has been set aside to kick off the first phase which will include the construction of 2, 000 km,” Mosonik told a media briefing on Tuesday.

The first phase will comprise 2,000 kilometres and is expected to start by December this year. It is set for completion during the 2015/16 financial year.Demand for modern and durable has exceeded supply and the gov-ernment is keen on narrowing the gap in efforts to stimulate produc-

tive sectors of the economy.It is estimated that Kenya has a total of 161,000 kilometres of road network, but only 14,000 or 8.7 per cent, is paved.Urban areas will be the major bene-ficiaries of the project as only 20 per cent of roads will be in rural zones.Contractors will be expected to

design, construct and maintain the roads. Mosonik said this will ensure quali-ty work and eliminate extra costs. “The contractors will guarantee construction quality and undertake post-construction maintenance of roads,” he said.

A police officer has been arrested after he shot dead a reveller following an argument in a bar in Ruai, Nairobi last night. Police and witnesses said the officer went for his gun and shot the victim at close range. The wounded man was rushed to hospi-tal where he died. Police say they are investigating the incident before taking the officer to court.

“Since HIV-1 is never cleared by the immune system, re-moval of the virus is required in order to cure the disease,” says Khalili, whose research focuses on the neuropatho-genesis of viral infections. The same technique could theoretically be used against a variety of viruses, he says.

Equity Bank posted a 21 per cent rise in pretax profit to Sh10.82 billion for the first half of 2014, a rise that was driven by growth in its loan book. The bank’s Chief Executive Officer James Mwangi said that its loans portfolio grew 24 per cent to

Sh186.5 billion, while net interest income rose 6 per cent to 14.02 billion shillings. “When you look at the loan book, it is very exciting,” Mwangi said. Equity, which also has operations in Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan, said its assets grew

to Sh302.92 billion from Sh261.58 billion in the first six months of 2013. The bank said its mobile banking business had also grown during the first half of the year, from Sh2.78 million customers at the end of 2013 to Sh3.04 million customers.

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has entered into a partnership with the Kiambu county government and a US private firm for the setting up of an Aquaponics Research Centre.The deal was signed on Monday and will lead to the setting up of the first ever such centre that is epected to revolutionise fish farming.JKUAT and Agrarian Group (Agrecco International) will establish an aquaponics project at the institution’s main campus in Juja. Sierra Leone doctor dies in fight against EbolaA doctor who contracted Ebola on duty in Sierra Leone has died of the disease, Doctors Without Borders announced on Tuesday. Dr. Sheik Humarr Khan fell ill early last week while overseeing Ebola treatment at Kenema Government Hospital, about 185 miles east of Sierra Leone’s capital , Freetown. He was treated by the French aid group, Medecins Sans Frontieres -- also known as Doctors Without

Borders -- in Kailahun, Sierra Leone, up until his death, spokesman Tim Shenk said. “Dr. Khan was an extremely determined and courageous doctor who cared deeply for his patients,” Doctors Without Borders said in a statement.“His work and dedication have been greatly appreciated by the medical community in Sierra Leone for many years. He will be remembered and missed by many, especially by

the doctors and nurses that worked with him. MSF’s sincere thoughts and condolences are with Dr. Khan’s family, friends and colleagues.” A University of Sierra Leone graduate, Khan worked for that African country’s Ministry of Health and Sanitation, including as head of the Lassa fever program at Kenema Government Hospital, according to the Viral Hemorrhagic Fever Consortium. While in that

latter post, Khan contracted the disease. He had worked with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone, consulted with the World Health Organization/Tulane University on its Mano River Union Lassa fever network and was physician-in-charge of his hospital’s HIV/AIDS program.Khan continued his training in Ghana from 2010 to 2013, before returning to head the Kenema Government

Hospital’s Lassa fever program and becoming a lecturer at the University of Sierra Leone. A new study published in the Jour-nal of the American College of Cardiology finds that run-ning as little as five minutes a day will do. It gives you the same benefits of running or walking for longer.The key is to sustain the practice. Running may in fact be a better exercise option than more moderate-inten-sity exercises for healthy but sedentary people since it produces similar, if not great-er, mortality benefits in five to 10 minutes compared to 15 to 20 minutes per day of moderate-intensity activity.Lead author, Dr D C Lee, from Iowa State University, advised physicians to offer a simple exercise prescription to patients: “15 min of brisk walking or 5 min of running is all it takes for most clinic patients. Exercise is a miracle drug in many ways.”The research followed more than 55,137 adults between the ages of 18 and 100 over a period of 15 years, recording their daily activity, including running.Compared with non-runners, the runners had a 30 per cent lower risk of death from all causes and a 45 per cent low-er risk of death from heart disease or stroke.The benefits were the same irrespective of the distance, frequency or speed, sex, age, body mass index, health conditions, smoking status or alcohol use.Participants who ran less than 51 minutes, fewer than 10km, slower than 10km per hour, or only one to two times per week had a lower risk of dying compared to those who did not run.Those who ran less than an hour per week had the same mortality benefits compared to those who ran more than three hours per week.
