The HIV/Aids menace that has ravaged sub-Sahara Africa, kill-ing humans and leaving millions of others orphaned, may come to an end by 2030.The hope has been given by the United Nations Aids agency which says in its latest report that there are chances the pan-demic may be brought under control by the year 2030.The number of new HIV infec-tions and deaths from Aids are falling but there is still urgent

A British woman is trying to keep up with the Kardashians in the worst possible way.Claire Leeson has spent more than $30,000 (about Sh2.7million) between hair extensions, teeth whitening, spray tans, clothes and breast enlargement operations. The money is also expected to secure some butt pads so that she can become a lookalike to the US celebrity family members. In the process, she has racked up more than $10,000 (Sh870,000) debts. Why would anyone ever want to do such a thing? Well, her reason is actually kind of sad.“I was told every day that I was the ‘ugliest thing alive’ and I should ‘kill myself. When I left school friends would tell me that I had a resemblance to Kim,” Claire told This Morning. “So, I watched (Keeping Up With the Kardashians) and realised I had the same amount of siblings and that we have the same kind of arguments and things going on. I thought she was so beautiful and I really wanted to be like her.”The 24-year-old, who works as a Kim K impersonator, says the next step in her transformation is to get fat transferred to her butt so it’s more like the infamous Kardashian kurve.“When I get my Kimmy on I feel like I’m unstoppable and untouchable and I feel like no one can stop me and I can make something of myself. I feel strong… and I feel that I have built enough confidence to love myself a little bit more.”

UN predicts HIV/Aids end by 2030

From Page 1Data from South Africa and Ethi-opia which are among the worst affected countries have improved, the agency said.South Africa still reports about 1, 000 new infections every day, re-ports Marcus Low of South African campaign group Treatment Action Campaign. The news may sound like sweet mu-sic to Kenyans who are struggling

with a HIV/Aids prevalence rate of 5.7 per cent. The new report confirms that by the Economic Survey of 2014 which said Aids related deaths have been on the decline. The survey indicates that cases of Malaria which killed 23, 789 people in 2013 and HIV/Aids which claimed 11, 448 lives over the peri-od, have been falling albeit slowly in the last four years. Pneumonia, can-

cer and other respiratory diseases have reported a rise in new cases. Many factors contribute to the improving HIV/Aids picture, including increased access to drugs. The number of men opting for circumcision to reduce the risk of spreading or contracting HIV has also doubled. The report says there have been more achievements in the past five years than in the previous 23 years.

“There is evidence about what works and where the obstacles re-main, more than ever before, there is hope that ending Aids is possible,” the report notes. But while there are some positive developments in the war against the pandemic, the UN agency has warned that the picture is far from rosy.It says fewer than four in 10 people with HIV are getting life-saving

antiretroviral therapy. “However, a business-as-usual approach or sustaining the Aids response at its current pace cannot end the epidemic,” the report says.“If we accelerate all HIV scale-up by 2020, we will be on track to end the epidemic by 2030. If not, we risk significantly increasing the time it would take,” said UNAids Executive Director Michel Sidibe during the launch of the report in Geneva.

The High Court in Mombasa has given the Government one month to conclude investigations against Lamu Governor Issa Timamy over recent killings in Mpeketoni. The State through Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Alexander Muteti and lawyer Edwin Okello had on Wednesday asked the court for two more months for investigations to establish if Timamy was involved in the killings before making a decision on whether to charge him of not.But Judge Martin Muya today ruled that a one-month extension was fair and reasonable.Timamy has been under investigations in connection with the Mpeketoni attacks in which more than 60 people were killed last month. He was arrested on June 26 and arraigned in court the next day but was not charged. He remained in custody until June 30 when he was released on Sh5 million cash bail. The State had, however, requested that he should remain in remand for 14 days as investigations into allegations of murder, forcible transfer of population and terrorism-related crimes are concluded. The case was set for July 16 when the State was expected to tell the court whether they could proceed with the charges. But the State asked for an additional two months to conclude investigations, arguing that there were many incidences and suspects involved.

A guard is recuperating in hospital after he was shot and injured during a robbery in Karen last night.A neighbour shot the guard after mistaking him for the thugs who had raided a nearby com-pound. The guard was responding to the attack when he was shot.Police say they are already looking for the three-man gang that shot dead a dog before robbing a woman of Sh15, 000, mobile phones and other valuables. Nai-robi police boss Benson Kibue said the gang then escaped without injuring anyone. Police say the dogs had attacked the gang before they shot one of them dead. It was as they were leav-ing that the neighbour who is a licensed gun holder, shot and injured a guard, after mistaking him for one of the attack-ers. Runda residents have threatened to recall their ward representative after he sponsored a motion which led to an order for the removal of road bar-riers in the posh estate. The residents, through their association, are collecting signatures to have Karura MCA, Kamau Thuo, recalled for what they say was lack of consultation. They argue that removing the barriers will have ad-verse effects on security in the area.Moving the motion, Thuo had argued that the bar-riers are discriminatory and hinder movement of vehicles.Other assembly members agreed that such barriers even hinder access by fire engines and police vehicles. The assembly passed the motion and had ordered the county government to remove the barriers within two weeks.

A planned police operation to shut down illegal LPG refilling centres and fuel siphoning and adulteration joints failed to take off after the officers were confronted with an order stopping it.Police and officials from Ministry of Energy had planned to close down the joints across the city but were

shocked to be served with an order stopping them from carrying out the exercise on Wednesday. The plans to raid the places followed complaints from stakeholders in the industry of uninspected gas cylinders in circulation, and petrol being mixed with kerosene and sold

Sinai fire case back in court as KPC snubs talksThe Sh25 billion Sinai fire survivors compensation case may have to be decided by the court after Kenya Pipeline Company pulled out of talks to reach an out-of-court settlement.High Court Judge Justice David Majanja had in March allowed the parties to reach an out of court settlement but such talks have not yielded any fruit. The victims, through their lawyers, yesterday told High Court Judge Isaac Lenaola, who is now presiding over the case, that the company had withdrawn from the talks despite their earlier assurances that they would agree on a compensation. They say that they are now apprehensive that such a deal will ever be reached. At least 109 people died and hundreds others seriously injured in the fire that also led to massive destruction of property. Then Makadara MP Mike Sonko (now Nairobi Senator), who filed the case on behalf of the survivors and families of victims, argued that it was negligence on the part of the company that caused the fire. While testifying in March, Sonko told the court that a Presidential task force had established that fuel from the pipeline leaked and caught fire after engineers failed to repair a gasket worth only Sh1, 000 that had burst at the plant. The victims want the state to pay them Sh25 billion as compensation for the sufferings they went through.

Despite the fact that many Africans face serious financial problems, their stance on eco-nomic affairs is more positive than many others around the world. A recent study by Pew Research, an organisation that collects information about so-cial and economic trends, has shown that overall, Africans, along with Asians and Latin Americans, tend to express more positive views about economic conditions than Eu-ropeans and Middle Eastern-ers. Among the eight African countries included in the study, Kenya and South Africa were the only two in which at least 50 per cent of the population said their economy was in good shape. Opinions

were almost equally divided on this question in Senegal, while ratings were mostly negative in Uganda, Ghana, and Nigeria. “Since our first international poll in 2001, the Pew Research Centre has surveyed 26 African nations, exploring how average citizens across the continent feel about the important issues in their countries and their own lives,” says a spokesperson for the group. The survey, which also covered Egypt and Tunisia, was used to highlight the na-tions’ economic challenges. “In some countries, the share of the public who say they are sometimes unable to afford food is alarmingly high,” said Pew experts.

Respite in Gaza as foes heed UN ceasefire call

Cases of kidney stones up due to global warming As temperatures get hotter due to global warming, scientists have advised that people in areas where its al-ready high should take a lot of water to avoid developing kidney stones. This warning is based on evidence from a recent study which found that higher temperatures signifi-cantly increase the risk of developing kidney stones, hard crystals that are pain-ful to pass and which can cause damage to the organs. Hot weather makes people more dehydrated thus allowing minerals to concentrate and crystalize within the body.“We found that as daily temperatures rise, there is a rapid increase in the proba-bility of patients presenting over the next 20 days with kidney stones,” said study lead author Dr. Gregory Tasian who is a pediatric urologist and epidemiolo-gist at The Children’s Hospi-tal of Philadelphia.Kidney stones usually do not cause permanent dam-age and can be dealt with by drinking a lot of water and taking pain medication. But they sometimes do require surgery to treat, and tend to recur in most people. The study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, exam-ined the health records of more than 60,000 people in several American cities, along with weather records. People were most likely to show up at the hospital with kidney stones three days after high temperatures.

There was a brief respite from the violence in Gaza early today after both sides in the latest Israeli-Palestinian conflict heeded a UN call for a temporary ceasefire. The UN, through its humanitarian agency United Nations Relief Works Agency, yesterday requested a five-hour cease-fire to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.“Factions of the resistance

have agreed to accept the offer of the UN regarding a ‘field calm’ for five hours from 10 am until 3 pm local time Thursday (today) for humanitarian needs,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zhuri said.Israel had already accepted the proposal to hold fire at least for that duration. It however warned that the military would not sit idle if attacked.“Should the humanitarian

window be exploited by Hamas or other terror organizations for the purpose of launching attacks against Israeli civilian or military targets the IDF will respond firmly and decisively,” the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement. An effort to permanently stop the killing stalled Tuesday when Israel resumed airstrikes after a brief, one-sided cease-fire brokered by Egypt. Hamas

leaders rejected the deal. They said they had not been consulted, and that the deal did not address their demands for greater freedom for Gaza’s 1.8 million residents.“The initiative is no longer acceptable, and there is no basis for the continuation of this initiative,” Zhuri argued.Anger is rising over civilian deaths, including those of four boys killed as they played on

the beach. Palestinian officials said the boys, ages 9 to 11, died on Wednesday when a shell from an Israeli gunship exploded near them at the Al-Shati refugee camp in north Gaza.An Israeli official said the shelling was another example of Hamas using civilians as human shields, intimating that the boys had been left to play near a rocket launcher.

Hair care industry’s Sh20b value

newsbriefs

ALL-SMiLeS: Hair-making professionals at a salon in the Village Market. The hair care industry in Kenya is worth Sh20b, according to research by L’Oreal east Africa, a subsidiary of global beauty and cosmetics giant, L’Oreal.

farmers to earn more from caneSugarcane farmers will reap more from the sale of product to factories once the Government sets pay on cane content.Speaking during inspection of irrigation scheme in Sony and Sigowet, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Felix Koskei said the Government has allocated Sh1.4billion for the purchase of weighing equipment.

By January, he said, all fac-tories in the western region will have been fitted with the machines that measur the sucrose content. This will be a departure from the past when no mea-sure of sucrose levels was taken. Payment was based on old weighing machines. He said the Government will also supply farmers with quick maturing seeds.

M-Pesa agents to offer other services

M-Pesa agents can stock other services to supplement earnings, Safaricom says. The telecommunications company lifted exclusivity restrictions on agents who were not allowed to run oth-er cash transfer or handling services.Director of Corporate Affairs Nzioka Waita said the agents

have been informed of the changes.Agents with high floats and transactions will receive higher commissions.Agent banking that has been adopted by most financial institutions is one of the avenues M-Pesa agents will exploit to boost earnings.

Kenya’s hair care industry is worth an estimated Sh20 billion. This is hardly surprising because beauty products are the number two item in spending priorities for women after food. L’Oreal East Africa, a subsidiary of global beauty and cosmetics giant, L’Oreal, says the hair care sector is booming.L’oreal East Africa Managing Director, Patricia Ithau says the industry has been driven up by demand for weaves. An increasing need for chemicals, such as relaxers, treatments and oils are also contributors to the growth.Ithau says hair relaxers that are available in Kenya account for Sh4 billion of the market value. Other products, such as treatments, oil, sprays and weaves account for Sh16 billion.Salon hair care saw its fastest growth in 2012 when the sector’s value increased by 10 per cent, another report from global research group, Euromonitor, shows.

“This is because consumers opted for salon services since they offer quality services at an affordable price,” says a spokesperson for Euromonitor. “In addition, the staff in salons are qualified professionals who can give consumers advice about hair maintenance.”The report says the leading players within the hair care sector were Revlon Ltd, Haco Industries Kenya Ltd and Alberto-Culver Co with their beauty products controlling 9 per cent, 7 per cent and 5 per cent of the Kenyan market respectively. The industry has encouraged the growth of beauty schools, training hair stylists and providing hundreds of employment opportunities every year.Ithau says the steady supply of customers is a sign that the industry will prosper as women spend 12 per cent of income on personal care. These include beauty products and clothes.

Construction of an oil pipeline to deliver fuel from Mombasa to Nairobi is set for later this month, the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) has announced. The pipeline is expected to help reduce dam-age to the Nairobi-Mombasa highway as there will be less need for fuel tankers on the

roads. The new 450km pipe line will replace the existing smaller one, which has been operational for the past 36 years. “The key objective is to replace existing Line 1 with a pipeline size to meet pro-jected demand for petroleum products in Kenya and the

East African region up to 2044,” said a spokesperson for the KPC. The cost of construction has doubled to Sh43 billion since 2012, when KPC made an initial estimate of how much money the project would need. Zakhem International are the main contractor.

Businesses should have strategies to reduce rent costs

Rent is one of those fixed costs that business owners have to meet without fail.In a study on small business-es in Kenya, experts from the International Finance Cor-poration, say once a business is up and running, the owner knows how much money he/she spends on it in a week, a month and sometimes, even a year. As such, the amount

spent on fixed charges like rent and utilities becomes predictable. For those leasing a stall or a business premise, paying a landlord months in advance is a possible way of securing a discount.Fatima Sayid, a business ana-lyst for the IFC, says in order to reduce the money spent on rent, it’s vital to plan and strategize for your lease. This

will help you make a wise choice regarding whether to go for a short-term or long-term lease. “To arrive at an appropriate decision, you need to make projections about two main possibilities. You need to forecast the future situation of the com-mercial premise rent market and the performance of your business,” Sayid says.

ABC’s new money

transfer product

ABC Bank customers in the diaspora can now transfer money from their banks to any M-Pesa account in Kenya in real time. This follows the launch of a new money trans-fer product by the bank.Shamaz Savani, the bank’s Managing Director, said the new product, Bank or Business-to-Customer (B2C) transfer, allows customers to transfer funds through the

bank’s internet banking plat-form. The product is available to domestic and diaspora customers. Savani said the move is part of the bank’s growth and expansion plans. Last month, ABC signed an agreement with Post Bank to help its customers access its services through Post Bank outlets. “This is crucial for ABC Bank as it is key in the strategic direction we have

been pursuing for the last couple of years,” Savani said. “It reinforces our determina-tion to increase and improve our channels to provide more touch points for our custom-ers to access our services,” The new service comes at a time when twice as many adults are using their mobile phones for financial services (11.5 million Kenyans) compared to those who still

prefer banks (5.4 million people).According to the latest Fin Access National Survey, the use of mobile phone financial services has more than dou-bled to 62 per cent this year from 28 per cent in 2009.With the Account-to- M-Pe-sa option from the service, customers will use either an internet banking web plat-form or a mobile application

freely available from ABC, to carry out these transactions. The amount of money sent or received is determined by M-Pesa transaction and daily limits, just like an ATM. The service is offered in partnership with Safaricom. However, in order to use the service, they must have an account with ABC and be registered for its Internet Banking service.

You need to forecast the future situation of the com-mercial premise rent market and the performance of your business,” Sayid says.

two moved in with a cousin in Ongata Rongai, Nairobi, where she set up a Sh500 grocery store to fend for the children. Her vegetable sales flourished especially because her prices were lower than those of competitors.

The fruits fetched Kerubo handsome profits and in six months, her stock grew to Sh10, 000. On a good day, she makes more than Sh5, 000 and at least Sh4, 000 when sales are poor.

Tattooing has gone to the extreme, so extreme is it that some body modification enthusiasts are transforming their bodies to look like animals. The late Daniel Anver, an Amer-ican, held the Guinness World record for the most permanent transformations to look like an animal—a female tiger.Anver claimed the body trans-formation were highly spiritual and were inspired by his cultural traditions as a Native American.

At the age of 23, he had his first tiger stripe tattooed onto his body and since then he underwent a series of modifications including tattooing almost his entire body.He had his upper lip surgically split into a cleft, his ears pointed and earlobes elongated. He had sub dermal silicone implants on his cheeks to change the shape of his face and to facilitate the wear-ing of whiskers and flattened his nose through septum relocation to resemble a tiger.

He got numerous piercings on the upper lip and cheek, where the feline whiskers can be inserted. He also removed all of his teeth and replaced them with fang in-sertions, which he sharpened and also got eyebrow implants as well.In addition to all those modifi-cation, he regularly wore contact lenses and an artificial robotic tail to make him into a “complete” tiger. Tragically, he committed suicide in 2012.

2. On the right lens of the sunglasses, the logo, LV, is inscribed. Fakes ones have nothing inscribed on the sunglasses.

3. The lenses of the sunglasses have a black to grey gradient colour. Fake ones either have no gradient or a purplish tint.

4. The strip at the top of the sunglasses should be etched with the Louis Vuitton logo, LV, starting with the LV and ending with the LV. It is never cut out that is; only one L or V.

The cold season is upon us and if there is one outfit that will get you through the chilly spell is the hoodie.Hoodies are the foolproof clothing when it comes to warmth and comfort. But if one is not careful in selection, it is easy to end up looking like they are just from bed.Fortunately, there are lots of stylish ways to make them work as part of a fashionable wardrobe, creativity is all it takes.Hoodies work well with colours. For example a grey or black hoodie calms down bright or bold colours. Bold

coloured hoodies brighten up dull colours like grey or brown. Therefore, consider the colour of the hoodie and the outfit you are going to match it with. Hoodies with zips at the front enrich an outfit better than simple hoodies, even one with motifs. This is because they draw attention to the outfit especially if the hoodie is left open. For example a zip up hoodie worn with a dress makes one look like a tomboy but yet so chic. One can choose to wear a scarf over it for extra warmth or play with some

accessories, when the hoodie is not zipped up.There is also the option of layering it up. This is the best way to make the hoodie look less athletic and more chic. If the hoodie is light, it’s easy to layer it under a jacket. One can even wear a cute pullover under the zip up hoodie or a favourite matching blazer under it.Be careful when layering up outfits because there is the risk of looking scrappy. Choose items that properly complement the look.

CAREER

Online studies experienced a low start in Kenya mainly because of limited support colleges have given the sector. But Kenyatta University has dared to invest and lead the log in funding the search for the education. The step is expected to help decongest a university that is already having double intakes. The

KU Digital School of Virtual and Open Learning offers diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The new boundaries are proof that universities are initiating projects that seek solutions to problems. A recent report by the Kenya Education Network (KENET) says public and private

universities are investing not more than 0.5per cent of their recurrent expenditure on ICT facilities.KU’s bold step is a demonstration that if intrinsic attention is given to online classes, they can be a success. During the launch of the programme, KU Vice Chancellor Oliver Mugenda

said students will seamlessly interact with lecturers. But they are likely to face challenges involving conservative academicians who may not be conversant with technology. The university should help dons adopt and feel free to interact with students for better results.

KU sets example for others by investing in online studies

The naming of writer Okwiri Oduor as the 2014 Caine Prize for African Writing winner signifies the potential lying in Kenyan minds, but has been little exploited. After emerging the finest in the continent, she has not only demonstrated that a woman can lead, but literature can also be rewarding.

Ms Oduor, who was named on Monday at Bodleian Library in Oxford is Sh1.5 million richer for her short story, My Father’s Head. She joins predecessors from Kenya Binyanvanga Wain-aina and Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor who won the award in 2002 and 2003 respectively. The awards, which recognise writers

below 40 years, may be the last ones if the current generation remains drowned in sheng’. The language has been blamed for dismal performance in Kiswahili and English in national exam-inations. Writers will not win using a retrogressive language that can hardly conquer Africa or the world as the trio have

done. The advent of technology has become a recipe for the youth’s failure. They are drunk with movies, games and non-ed-ucational materials. They cannot even replicate the movies they enjoy with creativity. In her sto-ry, Ms Oduor expresses loneli-ness and the trauma that follows the death of his father. The prize

presiding judges described the story as a ‘moving and emotion-al, yet controlled’ narration. She is tackling an emergency issue in the contemporary society to show that losers have their aftermaths amplified in their hearts. Literature is an arrow that no terrorist or armed forces can shoot down.

This drink is not only delicious as it was originally intended to be, but has had thousands of variations that are fun to explore.Prep Time: 3 minutesTotal Time: 3 minutesyield: 1 Cocktailingredients:½ a glass of tequila1 fresh slice of lemon¼ glass of lime juicePreparation:rPour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.

Movies, obviously cost lots of money to make and it is easy to see why by looking at the amount of ‘wastage’ in the making of some flicks. Here are some films whose making involved an incredible destruction of cars.Transformers 3The third movie with alien robots, made popular by Michael Bay (watch The Texas Chainsaw Massacre of 2003 and see his capabilities in movie production) is “crowned” at this time as the movie

with the highest number of cars destroyed. The movie counts a whopping 532 cars destroyed in the course of creating light moments for the audience. It is true, however, that these cars were not functional, so the producers did not have to spend so much to destroy them in the most devastating scenes in the movie.Fast & Furious - Furious 6 No less than 300 cars were destroyed in the sixth film of the saga “Fast &

Furious” - which is a quarter of the 1,200 cars destroyed in all 6 films so far. This follows the decimation of 260 cars in Fast Five. It’s estimated that every 37 seconds of the whole Fast Furious productions that run for 554 minutes, a car is destroyed. With the rising expectation of Fast & Furious 7, featuring last acts of Paul Walker before he perished in an accident, it is not yet known how many cars will be destroyed. Vin Diesel, the main character of the Fast series, is simply ‘The Destroyer’.

Die Hard: A Good Day to Die Hard: The fifth film in the series “Die Hard” best of them all according to many movie analysts performed by Bruce Willis, attracted primarily by the spectacle of the 132 cars destroyed, most of them supplied by Mercedes-Benz.In total, in these movie has been involved about 650 car accidents, the costs of these scenes were estimated at $11 million (Sh957m).

SPORT CHANGES IN THE OFFING

THURSDAY, JULY 17, 2014

Antonio Conte has quit his Juventus coaching role even after signing a one-year contract extension in May, the club have confirmed. The coach guided the club to a third consecutive league title last season and seemed to bring an end to the speculation surrounding his future in May when he pledged his future to the club until summer 2015. But the 44-year-old has made a U-turn by handing in his resignation on Tuesday. “I have decided to terminate my contract with Juventus,” Conte said in an interview on the club’s official website. “When did I make this decision? I have matured with time and my feelings led me to make this choice. It may be more difficult to keep win-

ning with Juventus.” Is he was interested in taking over the Italy national team? “I’m thinking now of the decision that I have just taken,” he replied. “An enormous thank you for what you have given to me as a player and as a coach. I have always been close to you. I want to say that the journey taken in recent years has been historic. “I want to thank all my players who have allowed me to win and have helped me to grow. I thank the club that has always been close to me, I thank Andrea Agnelli who support-ed me and I thank the staff and all employees who have worked with me to make this a winning Juventus. “What will I do? I’ll think about it tomorrow.”

The Kenya team to next week’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, was on the verge of boycotting the games had the government not acted quickly to pay the team’s allowances. The country will be represented by 195 athletes in the July 23 to August 3 championships in United Kingdom. The athletes had demanded their full pay upfront before departure “as the Government had failed to reward the athletes to the 2013 World Crosscountry Championships in Poland and the world track and field championships in Moscow.”Team captain Ezekiel Kemboi raised the issue with Sports Minister Hassan Wario when the minister visited their training camp at Kasarani last week.“There have been instances before where athletes are not paid allowances in full or part of it after major events. We want that erased going forward. Athletes demand better,” said the steeplechase champion who will be the team captain. But Commissioner for Sports Gordon Oluoch said during an Athletics Kenya send-off dinner on Tuesday night in Nairobi that the Government had settled the allowances for the Rugby Sevens, judo and shooting teams who left on Sunday without pay. “We want to assure the rest of the team that they will receive allowances in full before travelling to Glasgow at the end of the week. There should be no cause of alarm,” he said.

Jet-lagged forward Allan Wanga was available for selection few hours after arriving from Sudan as Kenya played to a disappointing barren draw with Burundi on Tues-day at the Nyayo National Stadium. The El-Merikh player was a second half cameo in a team that had five rookies in what could be the last build-up to Sunday’s African Cup of Nations qualifier against Lesotho. The player, who signed for the Su-danese club recently in a deal worth Sh8million, said he was happy to play for the national team as they prepare for the crunch away match.“The two matches ahead of us are important and that is why I had to come direct to the team on arrival. The magnitude of the match dedi-cates so,” he said.“We so much want to be in Mo-rocco next year that means getting favourable results against Lesotho to qualify for the group stages. That is the dream of every player in camp,” said Wanga.Wanga scored in his debut for El-Mereikh as the Sudanese top league resumed last Thursday. His strike saw his side edge out El-Ahlil Atbara 1-0 away.“I am liking my new club… the atmosphere is just great. The fans came out in large numbers and give the team a lot of support,” he said.Wanga hopes to lead El-Mereikh to even greater heights this season starting with the Cecafa club championships to be held in Kigali, Rwanda, next month.

The head of Fifa’s anti-rac-ism task force has voiced his disappointment at the failure to appoint staff trained to record discriminatory abuse in the just concluded World Cup in the wake of a series of contentious incidents.Fifa did not take action over offensive chanting by Mexican fans, racist chanting at matches involving Russia and Croatia, or “blacked up” fans who were pictured at the Germany v Ghana game.“There is no reason why someone should be entering the stadium clearly display-ing their intent. We at Fifa and the local organising committee should be doing a much better job,” said Jeffrey Webb, the Concacaf president and also a member of Fifa’s executive committee. He said a proposal to have three officials at every match trained to spot and record evidence of anti-discrimi-natory behaviour had been knocked back by Fifa and the organising committee.Webb said the proposal, made in March, was one of the “top priorities” of the task force precisely because of the sort of incidents that had happened in Brazil and that the failure to implement it was “very unfortunate”.Piara Powar, the director of European anti-racism network FARE, which helps operate a similar system for Uefa, said that a detailed proposal had been worke-out with Webb’s office.

Uruguay are in line to host the World Cup with Argenti-na on its 100th anniversary in 2030 Despite serial biter Luis Suarez shaming his country in Brazil and President Jose Mujica calling the FIFA hierarchy ‘old sons of bitches’, Uruguay are favourites to host the finals in 2030.With the United States already earmarked for 2026, following Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022, that makes 2034 the earliest possible date for England to have any hope of staging its second World Cup. FIFA are acutely aware that Uruguay have not staged the finals for almost a century,

even though they have won the World Cup twice and reached the semi-finals on three other occasions. The difficulty of taking the tournament back to the land of its inaugural hosts and winners — in 1930 — is that Uruguay is a small country with a population of only just over 3.3 million. That is where Argentina come in. The concept is for Uruguay’s neighbours to be co-hosts. Although FIFA have always expressed some resistance to joint hosting, a precedent was set by the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea. In fact, a

successful two-nation event in South America would be more bad news for England. While the tournament is due to return to Europe 20 years from now, FIFA are conscious also that Holland, three-time finalists, have yet to hold the finals. However, the emergence of Belgium as a competitive nation encourages the pros-pect of those two neighbours being given the honour.FIFA also await China, with its huge population and massive commercial market, declaring they are ready. The economic muscle of China could hold sway.

Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has resigned after their dismal exit at the FIFA World Cup on home soil. The Brazilian national team’s build-up for the 2014 World Cup, in which they eventually finished fourth after losing to the Netherlands in Brasília, was a “joke.” For 2018, it’ll be the “real deal.”The worldwide soccer schedule and the fact that

they were hosting the World Cup meant that Brazil played very few official matches in the four-year cycle leading up to 2014. They played just nine official games, five in last year’s Confederations Cup and four more in the 2011 Copa America. In assembling the side, former head coach Mano Menezes, and later Luiz Felipe Scolari, had to rely

primarily on friendly match-es, where the intensity of the game just isn’t comparable. In their preparation for the World Cup in Russia in four years’ time, the “Seleção” may have the chance to play four times as many official games. That will be because of two main reasons: The first being the fact the team will once again have to compete in South American qualifying,

something they were exempt from as hosts. That in itself will involve 18 games against their continental neighbours. The second reason comes down to competing in an additional Copa América, to be held in Chile next year, Brazil could play up to 12 games across these two tour-naments. They still have the chance to be involved in the Confederations Cup in Rus-

sia, to be held in 2017, should they take continental hon-ours in Chile next summer. Taking all that into account, the “Seleção” could play 35 official matches between now and the next World Cup.Before that, Brazil will also play some friendly matches in what remains of 2014. There are currently three in the di-ary: Colombia in the United States, Turkey in Istanbul.

Louis van Gaal finally started work as new Manchester United manager on Wednes-day morning. He put players through paces as he gets to know the club’s Carrington training ground. The 62-year-old declined to take a holiday after the Netherlands’s World Cup campaign and has gone straight down to business in Manchester, a matter of days after the Dutch finished third in Brazil. And with double training sessions planned and fines for tardiness and indiscipline, the former Bayern Munich boss is set to run a strict regime. He aims to transform the club’s on-pitch fortunes following their seventh-place finish last season. The Dutchman will be given little time to get used to the new surroundings. Van Gaal and his squad, minus those involved in the latter stages of the World Cup, are set to jet

off to Los Angeles on Friday to begin a US tour. Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and new signings Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw will be among the travelling party as the Red Devils face LA Galaxy on July 23 before taking Roma, Inter and Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup.On return to Manchester, Van Gaal will oversee his first home game against Valencia in a final pre-season clash on August 12, before the Red Devils host Swansea City in their Premier League opener on August 16. He is expected to ramp up United’s transfer activity with further signings expected to join Shaw and Herrera, who the Dutchman recruited prior to his arrival. The likes of Angel Di Maria, who is expected to leave Real Madrid, and Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal have been strongly linked.

Mercedes have confirmed Nico Rosberg has signed a “multi-year contract extension” with the Silver Arrows. The German tops the standings ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton heading into his home grand prix at Hockenheim. “It has been a difficult road to get to where we are now, but everybody kept believing and, thanks to the fantastic support from Mercedes-Benz, we are now leading the way in F1,” said Rosberg. “There is competitive tension between the two but it can be handled. That might

no longer be the case were Mercedes to risk taking on another superstar alongside Hamilton, such as Fernando Alonso or Sebastian Vettel. The next question is whether Hamilton, whose contract runs out at the end of 2015, will sign a new deal himself.” The former Williams driver joined Mercedes in 2010 and has taken six victories, 17 podiums and eight pole positions with the Silver Arrows. He has won three times in 2014 and leads the championship by four points ahead of this weekend’s German Grand Prix.

Magaret Rotich has ditched Telkom Orange for Kenyatta University in the Kenya Hockey Union women’s league after winning a scholarship from the institution. The celebrated forward will expect-

ed to join the Thika Road-based in-stitution in September from Orange where she has been for six years. “I haven’t decided what I’ll study but I may go for education,” said Rotich. The scholarship appeared in

an ad in local dailies and urged tal-ented students to apply. She applied and was accepted.Rotch, along with Pauline Naise of USIU-Africa, had attracted the in-terest of the German club who have

been closely monitoring their form at the national team camp. The duo first attracted the eyes of a German coach, Guart, who is in charge of the two national teams preparing for the World League One

tournament to be hosted at the City Park Hockey Stadium in Nairobi in September. Last week, Rotich topped in the beep test conducted the City Park hockey stadium scor-ing an impressive 12.3.

Wade stays around to restoke fire at Heat as James returns homeDwyane Wade will stay with the Miami Heat to aid the club he helped to three NBA titles in rebuilding after the loss of superstar LeBron James.Wade, who opted out of his contract last month just as James did, sent a Twitter mes-sage ending any speculation he might follow James out of Miami. “Home Is Where The

Heart Is My Home,My City,My House. Hashtag HeatLifer,” Wade tweeted. It’s a boost for the Heat who also retain Chris Bosh who was courted by the Houston Rockets among others but chose to stay with the Heat for a reported five-year deal worth Sh10 billion. By opting out of his prior contract, Wade gave

the Heat more money to spend on talent to replace James but ensured greater salaries in future years.“Dwyane has been the fran-chise cornerstone for this team since the day he arrived 11 years ago,” Heat president Pat Riley said.“He has shown his commit-ment to the Heat many times

over the course of his career and has always been willing to sacrifice in order to help build this team into a champion.“This time is no different. I am ecstatic to have him back in the fold and I am confident that Dwyane, as always, will be leading this team as we look to contend for NBA champion-ships.”

Gor Mahia last evening beat Nakuru AllStars 1-0 to go six points clear at the top of the KPL table. Cameroonian striker Simon Pierre scored the only goal of the match in the 10th minute with a clinical striker from 18 yards to add more woes to the relegation-threatened side.

The match at the Nairobi City Stadium was a sweet revenge for K’Ogalo who lost 2-0 to the newcomers in the first leg. Tusker FC have 31 points. “Scoring a winner and my debut goal couldn’t have been any sweeter.  I feel the love from the fans,” said the

former Karaturi Sport player. “I want to build my career in this amazing club with a huge following. I am ready to fight for a place in the team.” K’Ogalo were without the Ugandan duo of Godfrey Walusimbi and Geoffrey Kizito who are international duty with the Cranes.

HEaDinG baCK HoME: Lebron James is returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers after a stint with the Miami Heat.

Last season, the Miami Heat made their way to the nba Finals for the fourth straight season.

LeBron James startled the sports world by announcing that he’ll be returning to Cleveland, Ohio rather than resigning with the Miami Heat. When James initially opted-out of the final year of his contract with the Heat, it was generally interpreted as a power play to restructure the team’s contracts and attract some fresh talent. But as days went by without Miami succeeding in securing any firm commitments to add major new help, rumors grew that James was considering a return to his original team. Now it has happened. Here are the reasons why.The Cavaliers are about as good as the HeatLast season, the Miami Heat made their way to the NBA Finals for the fourth straight season. The Cleveland Cavaliers, by contrast, missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season. But despite those divergent fortunes, the currently constructed rosters of the two teams are about equal in quality. In other words, the Heat were a lot better than the Cavs solely because the Heat had LeBron James and the Cavs didn’t. Add LeBron to the Cleveland roster, and the team is just as good. Except Cleveland, unlike Miami, has some young talent on the roster.

LeBron has extremely deep ties to Ohio. Personally, I like Cleveland. So much that I once proposed relocating Silicon Valley to the North Coast. But most people, given the choice, would rather live in Miami than in Cleveland. So to understand the move, you need to understand that James has deep personal ties to Ohio.He grew up in Akron, not far from Cleve-land. And he went directly from playing high school ball in Ohio to playing profes-sionally for the Cavaliers. His wife is also from Ohio. He has no real personal or fami-ly connections in South Florida or anywhere else other than the Cleveland area.If LeBron wins in Cleveland he’ll be a heroThis is probably the most important consid-eration. When James decamped for Miami, he had aspirations of building a historic dynasty that would rival the Chicago Bulls teams that Michael Jordan led in the 90s or the Boston Celtics teams that dominated the NBA in the 1960s. It’s clear by this off season that it isn’t going to happen. The James-led Heat mini-dynasty had an impressive four-year run, but not a historic one. Even if he won another ring there over the next three years, it wouldn’t substantially change his legacy.
