Dear Friends,It is with great pride that we report on the success of theCentral Connecticut Coast YMCA in 2013. With a strong senseof mission and purpose, we celebrate our achievements in theareas of youth development, healthy living, and socialresponsibility. Making a positive impact on the lives of thosewe serve is the inspiration for all that we say and do. Animpact report sharing how we do this and the difference thatthe Y makes is also presented in this Annual Report.

We would like to use the next few sentences to recognize andthank the greatest asset held by the Y – our volunteers. Sinceits founding in 1884, volunteer leaders have been the heartand soul of our movement. All Ys are led by volunteers servingon Boards and are supported by volunteers working withimportant programs and services. Volunteers also worktirelessly to raise funds through the Y’s Annual Campaign sothat we can welcome all regardless of ability to pay. In 2013,995 men, women, and children donated 30,055 hours of theirtime at the Central Connecticut Coast Y. Those are incrediblenumbers, but it is the spirit, commitment, and expertisebrought by our volunteers that allows us to make such apowerful impact on so many lives.

It is with deep appreciation that we thank our Y volunteerswho enable us to build healthy spirit, mind, and body in all whowe serve.

Sincerely,

Jon Leckerling David Stevenson, Ph.DChair, YMCA Board of Directors President/CEO

MAKING A DIFFERENCEIN OURCOMMUNITYWith a special focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, in 2013our Y served 87,000 kids, families, andadults in twenty five towns and cities includingBridgeport and New Haven.

Character development is at the heart of the Y’smission, and the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility were modeled andtaught to 32,000 youth in 2013. Throughparticipation in programs including child care, youth sports, summer camping, and Youth inGovernment, character was built and positivevalues were reinforced.

Defined as the difference in academicperformance between low-income kids and theirmore privileged peers, the educationachievement gap begins early in life for manychildren. In 2013, the Y made great strides inclosing the gap for 1,230 low-incomechildren through the our 8 school-readinessprograms, 38 after-school programs and 10summer camp programs with a special focus ondeveloping reading and writing skills. Thisrepresents an increase of 15% in the numberof children served as compared to 2012.

The Y has been teaching kids how to swim andbe safe around the water for decades. In 2013,7,441 children participated in Y swimminglessons and water safety education programsrepresenting an increase of 13% as comparedto 2012.

Overweight, obesity, physical inactivity, andpoor nutrition affect most in our community.About one in four of our neighbors are pre-diabetic, and many do not realize the serioushealth consequences of leading an unhealthylifestyle. In 2013, 46,304 youth and adultsparticipated in health, wellness, education, physical activity and diabetes preventionprograms and services. This represents anincrease of 34% in the number served ascompared to 2012.

Chronic homelessness is a challenge faced bymany families and adults, particularly inBridgeport and New Haven. With a large teamof social workers and an inventory of 415apartments, the Y continues to serve as thelargest provider of affordable and supportivehousing in the state. In 2013, the Y and ourpartners reduced chronic homelessness by12% in Bridgeport and New Haven.

As a source and resource for affordableprograms and services, $2.8M in financialassistance was provided to 5,691 financiallydisadvantaged kids, families, and adultsenabling participation in important Y programsor services.

A special thanks to our partners, donors, staff, and the 995 committed volunteers whodonated 30,055 hours of their time to helpthe Y fulfill its mission.
