San LuiS ObiSpOSan Luis Obispo is one of California’s oldest cities - its founding took place in 1772 with the establishment of Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa by Father Junipero Serrra as the fifth mission in the California chain of 21 missions. The mission was named after Saint Louis, a 13th Century Bishop of Toulouse, France. The literal translation for the name, San Luis Obispo, is “Saint Louis, the Bishop.”

Today, San Luis Obispo, a town of approximately 44,000 people, is the undisputed hub of the Central Coast and often finds itself at the top of various magazines “Best of” lists touting such things as

“Best Small Towns” and “Healthiest Cities.” While San Luis Obispo is no stranger to good publicity, the locals are fiercely protective of this rare gem and commonly refer to their good living and unique lifestyle as the “SLO Life.” The city owes much of its vibrancy and energy to the fact that it is also a college town, home to California Polytechnic State University (known locally as “Cal Poly” or just

“Poly”). In addition to providing a constant flow of new people and new ideas to the city, the university is also a key employer.

The downtown of San Luis Obispo is often described as “world class” by visitors, and the Thursday night Farmers’ Market is a “must-see” while you are on the Central Coast. The event attracts thousands of visitors and locals each week. There you will find a bounty of locally grown produce as well as an abundance of good food and live entertainment.

You will also want to take advantage of the many dozens of wonderful walking trails. The vistas found at the top of any one of the local peaks, which are actually volcanic plugs known as

“morros,” will provide amazing views of the area and inspire more outdoor adventures.

This is the part of the Central Coast that locals often refer to as being “above the grade” for the steep climb on Highway 101 between San Luis Obispo and Atascadero. The North County has a distinctive Mediterranean climate and terrain that has made it ideally suited for growing wine grapes. In fact, this region has transformed itself into a destination all on its own as it boasts well over 200 wineries.

Paso Robles, a city that is home to around 30,000 people, has the official name of “el Paso de Robles” which translates from Spanish to “Pass of the Oaks,” but locals simply call it “Paso.” This town of rolling hills has always been known for its hot springs, but in more recent years it has been all about its wine country and fine dining. Be sure to visit downtown for an incredible variety of top-notch restaurants and shopping. And, do not forget to block out an afternoon for wine tasting. There are so many different varietals to choose from and each winery has its own style, so you are sure to find one that you will want to visit again and again.

Templeton, with its quaint downtown, offers easy living among the hills and oaks. A small town of under 5,000, Templeton sits halfway between Paso Robles and Atascadero. Wineries can be found in this area, which can often have the feel of an “old west” town. Templeton is a great place to celebrate the 4th of July with its Main Street Parade and fireworks show, you will swear that you were transported back in time!

Atascadero has the look and feel of a small town. Locals look forward each year to the temporary ice skating rink in the Sunken Gardens. This city of approximately 28,000, takes great pride in its local zoo and lake. Home to many families, including those who commute out of the area to work, Atascadero is a community with strong ties to history and a commitment to progress. The area was originally settled by the Salinan Indians and began its modern existence when it was founded in 1913 by entrepreneur, E.G. Lews.

Avila Beach is a tiny beach hamlet of just 797 people that sits a few miles south of San Luis Obispo. Although Avila still has a working commercial fishing pier and the inland areas have extensive apple orchards, tourism is now the main industry. The Point San Luis Lighthouse, which still stands today, was built in 1890 after a series of shipping accidents. Due to its unique topography, which has the effect of sheltering it from wind and fog, the weather in Avila Beach is consistently among the best in the world.

Shell Beach is usually counted as part of Pismo Beach, but don’t tell that to the locals! One thing to do is to check out the top of the bluffs. Standing at the top of these majestic cliffs will give you spectacular panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. And, if you keep walking down the cliff trail – or, you can use the steps at nearby Cliffs Resort – you will be treated to access to a world-class beach where you can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and surfing.

Pismo Beach epitomizes surf, sand, and sun all summer long. This town of 8,500 pulses with energy during the summer months as visitors fill the local beaches and walk the restaurant and shop-lined streets. Pismo Beach is known as the “Clam Capital” of California and the city hosts its Clam Festival every October with a clam-themed parade followed by a clam chowder competition. Another popular event that is held each year is the Pismo Beach Classic Car Show where those displaying their cars cruise downtown before the big event. There is so much to do for everyone that it’s hard to not have a great time in Pismo Beach!

Oceano is a classic - and now historic - California beach. In addition to all the usual beach activities, this is also prime horseback-riding and kite-flying territory. Off-road and ATV enthusiasts will love Oceano Dunes, an official SVRA where 1,500 acres of natural sand dunes comprise the only park in California where visitors may legally drive vehicles on the beach.

Arroyo Grande, known by locals as “A.G.,” is the largest of the “Five Cities” (the other four are: Shell Beach, Pismo Beach, Oceano, and Grover Beach) with a population of nearly 16,000 people. Widely considered a great place to live, Arroyo Grande boasts a wonderful downtown historic Village area, which is great for a nice meal and a lazy afternoon exploring the eclectic collection of shops. A.G. is one place you will definitely want to explore while on the Central Coast.

Grover Beach, originally called “Grover City,” a town of 13,000, voted to change its name to emphasize the proximity to the ocean in 1992. Locals simply call it

“Grover” and love it for its easy living and relaxed lifestyle. This place has its own flavor and character with plenty of families calling it home.

Nipomo is as far south as you can go in San Luis Obispo County and has a rich heritage of agriculture. This city of 12,600 is home to many families and commuters to various parts of the Central Coast, including its much larger neighbor to the South, Santa Maria. Attractive home values and a strong community make this a desirable place to plant roots for many area residents.

Ron’s nuRseRyRon’s is not just a nursery, but a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere where you can find that one special item. Whether it be a seasonal gift or an unusual houseplant, you will find it at Ron’s where they specialize in all plants, trees, succulents, vegetables, and fruits for the garden. You will also find that homecare product, and even that sought after personal care item you desire for yourself or the one you love. Ron’s has gone green in its recycled and refreshed discoveries and one of-a-kind furniture or metal pieces.

On the Central Coast you will find a stretch of coastline that time has forgotten. “Classic California” is how these towns are often described, each with its own unique character and flavor.

Cambria, known for its “pines by the sea,” is a picturesque little hamlet nestled on the north end of the county. In addition to the spectacular coastline (be sure to visit the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk), Cambria features gourmet restaurants, fine wine tasting, historic architecture, and beautiful art galleries in its “East” and “West Villages.” This small town of just over 6,000 serves as an inspiration year-round to local and visiting artists and photographers. Be sure to check out the unusual sand at the public beach area at Shamel Park, where you will find millions of tiny pebbles of unusual jasper, serpentine, and other minerals. And, don’t forget to visit Hearst Castle, which is just a few miles north on Highway 1 near the unincorporated community of San Simeon. This is a “must see” attraction that draws nearly a million visitors each year.

Cayucos has the look and feel of a true beach town. Budget Travel Magazine put it on its list of ‘America’s Coolest Small Towns’. The days are long and the pace is slow. A great place for family vacation, young kids are free to roam without a worry or a care. Walk the beach and come up through downtown where you find some wonderful antiques, as well as other treats. This is the place for a lazy summer vacation and in this town of 3,000 or so people, there’s not much else to do but enjoy yourself. This town, like so many others on the Central Coast, has a rich Chumash and Spanish heritage, in fact, the name Cayucos derives from the Chumash word “cayuco,” which is the Spanish word for the type of canoe the missionaries saw the Chumash use to fish in the waters there.

Morro Bay is an old-time fishing village combined with an eclectic artsy vibe. There is no place quite like it that we know. Morro Rock is a spectacular site that can be seen from all parts of this town of 10,350 people. While there, we recommend that you drive to the top of the Morro Bay Golf Course in the Morro Bay State Park on the south end of town. There you will find a trailhead for Black Hill, where you can take a short walk to the top and begin to get your bearings. Also, do not forget about the great shopping and food to be found by walking the Embarcadero.

Los Osos (or the “Valley of the Bear”) is usually combined with neighboring Baywood Park for counting the population, which comes in at around 16,000. The town is located on the water at the south end of the Estero Bay. The history of Los Osos dates back as far as 1200 A.D. with the discovery of an ancient Chumash Native American archaeological site (known as “Los Osos Back Bay”) near The Elfin Forest, which is something you will want to be sure to see while you are in the area. A beautiful boardwalk trail will lead you in and out of the rare and incredibly interesting natural preserve.

I create contemporary stoneware pottery to use and enjoy everyday, pieces designed to make you smile and help make ordinary moments special. Most pieces start on the pottery wheel and evolve into forms etched with drawings and designs reflecting the Central Coast – the rhythm of the sea, patterns of pines needles, and changing colors of rocky coastline and grassy meadows. antiqueS & cOLLectibLeSDuring this time of plasma TVs and plastic bits of technology it is hard trying to find that personal and different item that will not go out of date. This is part of the reason antiques have remained so valuable. Rich in history, high-quality, often hand-crafted, antiques give the buyer a unique item to cherish and display.

If you are new to antiquing a good place to start is with home furnishings. A piece of antique furniture can date back hundreds of years depending on the durability of the material and the condition. You’ll often find that antiques are kept in a family for generations. Because of this, you may find mint condition furnishings more readily available than you might think.

There are many chances for a person to buy antique furniture by hunting down an antique shop. Antique furniture can come in many forms but most commonly they are a set of drawers, desk, or a bookcase. These items are usually manufactured from heavy oak and show signs of wear over the years. They can be refurbished easily if a person is knowledgeable in the art of restoration.

The most interesting and exciting activity you can do with antique furniture is determining its age. With the abundance of information available right at our fingertips, it’s quite simple to research antiques on-line. You may discover an enormous amount of history about where it came from, who created it, and even where the item has been so far.

Antique furniture is one thing that never seems to go out of style regardless of where in the world it is found. And don’t forget about it’s utility. Part of the fun of antique furniture is not just its display, but it’s usefulness for storing all of our precious possessions.

If you like perfect weather, tasty cuisine, award-winning wines, picturesque beaches and breathtakingly beautiful hiking trails, then you have found your perfect destination. No matter what your preference, you can find the perfect place to call home in San Luis Obispo County’s eclectic selection of cities.

Cambria’s lovely village boasts of its artists’ colony and supports an impressive selection of fine restaurants, specialty shops and art galleries. Towering Monterey pines frame the dynamic coastline along its unique Moonstone Beach Drive, where semi-precious agate and jasper stones can be found along in the sand.

The California beach town of Cayucos is a haven for surfers and fishing enthusiasts, and locals enjoy a host of antique shops, restaurants and taverns along its “old California” main street. The long, uncluttered white sandy beach is home to the Cayucos pier built in 1875. Cayucos is a great place to slow down, relax, and enjoy life the way it is meant to be.

Morro Bay is unique in having one of California’s largest and most productive commercial fishing fleets, which provides area restaurants and fish markets with the freshest of seafood. Harbor side Morro Bay offers visitors a large variety of unique shops and restaurants – along with the most with magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean, Morro Rock and the Morro Bay estuary.

Once inhabited by California Grizzly Bears and Chumash Indians, Los Osos/Baywood Park has become a community where nature still prevails. From the moment you enter the “Valley of the Bears” you enter a truly enchanted part of the California Central Coast.

The city of Paso Robles is an eclectic mix of past and present with a commitment to preserving its small town charm. A vibrant downtown area is filled with boutiques, antique stores and eateries all surrounding the beautiful city park. The dominant feature of Paso Robles is the flourishing wine industry of more than 170 wineries and 250 vineyards.

Templeton has retained much of its historical character. Surrounded by rich agricultural land and hilly ranges with clusters of oak trees, the town is home to many horse ranches. It’s also one of the county’s main winemaking regions.

A diverse blend of colorful history, rolling hills dotted with majestic oaks, a quaint lake park zoo, vineyards and a thriving downtown, Atascadero offers visitors an artful blend of business, history, agriculture, landmark architecture, arts and culture. Atascadero is just two miles south of the

historic Santa Margarita Ranch, the site of Savor the Central Coast, a gourmet food and travel festival.

San Luis Obispo is home to historic Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and the world-famous Thursday Night Farmers’ Market. Tree-lined streets, a charming shopping district, and historic buildings comprise the delightful downtown area with its array of stores, outdoor cafes, coffee houses, and galleries.

Avila Beach boasts perpetual sun and the warmest beach in the county. Avila offers a recently renovated beach side retail district, whale watching tours our of Port San Luis, a beautiful golf course and natural mineral springs baths in redwood tubs which dot the tree-covered hillside.

Pismo Beach preserves the spirit of early California with 23 miles of unspoiled sandy beaches including Pismo State Beach Park, dramatic rugged coastlines, and the 1,200-foot Pismo Pier lined with fishing enthusiasts.

Located two miles east of the Pacific Ocean, surrounded by farms, flower-fields, and wineries, Arroyo Grande, California maintains a distinct village character throughout its vibrant downtown shopping and dining district. Spanning the downtown Arroyo Grande Creek is a rustic swinging bridge. It’s a favorite avenue for pedestrians to reach the “village,” a cluster of historic building museums, antique stores, gift shops, upscale boutiques and restaurants.

Diverse recreational opportunities are offered in and around Grover Beach. Activities like dune hiking, fishing, clamming, golfing, horseback riding, wine tasting and off-road vehicle riding are just some of the activities awaiting you.

Oceano enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year! The terrain is made up of gently rolling hills and sand dunes, lush foliage and vineyards. There are lots of things to do in the area, but the biggest attraction is the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. Here the dunes are recognized as being the most extensive coastal sand dunes in the state.

The name Nipomo is derived from the Chumash Indian word “Nepomah”, meaning “the foot of the hills”. The quaint community is nestled in the foothills with a variety of scenic views: acres of avocado and lemon orchards, sand dunes bordering the ocean, and stately rows of eucalyptus trees.
