SAN FRANCISCO DONS BASKETBALL - PAGE 2

HEAD COACH REX WALTERS A new era began April 7, 2008 when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kan-sas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running and entering his third season on the Hilltop, every player on the 2010-11 roster was recruited to USF by Walters and his coaching staff. San Francisco has added talented size and versatile perimeter players from outstand-ing prep programs and all look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. San Francisco made strides during the second year of its rebuilding process under Coach Walters and showed its resiliency by posting a solid showing in a much-improved West Coast Confer-ence. USF closed the league campaign on a tear, winning four of fi ve highlighted by a thrilling 81-77 overtime upset victory against No. 13/8 Gonzaga. The Dons seized a 72-70 road overtime win at San Diego the next time out and then swept the fi nal homestand of the year against the Lions and Pepperdine. San Francisco posted its third and fi nal overtime triumph in a 71-68 cliffhanger at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara. San Francisco posted its best league record (7-7) and fi nish (fourth) since 2007. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Wil-liams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall, won back-to-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have fi ve children: Addison (14), Drew (12), Riley (9), Gunner (7), and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008.

USF SET FOR WCC ACTION: San Francisco opens the 2011 West Coast Conference season when it travels to the South Bay to take on ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara Saturday, January 8, 2011 at the Leavey Events Center. The 206th meeting between the two teams will be televised on Comcast SportsNet California and broadcast live on Green 960, the home of Dons Basketball. USF took a 71-68 overtime victory in its last trip to Santa Clara and looks to open league play with a victory for the fi rst time since 2007.

DONS IN WCC OPENERS: Since the start of the 1986 West Coast Conference season, USF owns a 10-15 record in league openers and is 4-10 in con-ference debuts away from War Memorial Gym. San Francisco tackles Santa Clara in the WCC opener for both teams Saturday. The last time the Dons and Broncos met in a league lid-lifter, SCU posted a 64-53 triumph at the Leavey Center (1/9/04).

MICHAEL WILLIAMS HEATS UP: Sophomore guard Michael Williams is off to a torrid start to the 2010-11 season and leads the team in scoring at 16.1 points per game on .506 (39-77) from 3-point range. The Southern California native made the game-winning free throws in USF’s 83-81 overtime win versus Colorado (11/20/10) and turned in a career day in the Green and Gold’s 50-48 overtime triumph against Montana (12/12/10), scoring 23 points with 13 rebounds in 42 minutes. Williams turned in a career-high with 26 points in a 69-57 win against Hampton (12/30/10).

USF DONS SIGN MARK TOLLEFSEN FOR

2011-12 CAMPAIGN The University of San Francisco men’s basketball team is proud to an-nounce the signing of 6-foot-9 forward Mark Tollefsen from Danville, Calif. Tollefsen, a senior at San Ramon Valley in Danville, signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) today on the fi rst day of the early signing period. After signing seven players last year, USF will sign just one player this season. “Once Mark makes the transition to the collegiate game, you will see a young man that understands how to play the game offensively,” USF head coach Rex Walters said. “He will guard multiple positions and will be used a lot of dif-ferent ways. We are very excited to get a young man that comes from a great program and great parents.” The Bay Area product played a key role in San Ramon Valley’s 28-4 season last year. The Wolves shared the East Bay Athletic League title with De La Salle and played its way to the CIF Division I Northern California semi-fi nals where it lost by three points to De La Salle. Tollefsen averaged 9.2 points and 7.3 rebounds last season for the Wolves shooting 54 percent from the fi eld and 45 percent from behind the arc. He also av-eraged 5.4 offensive rebounds a game. “Mark is a long/lean athletic hybrid forward,” Walters said. “He’s a very skilled passer, that can handle the ball, shoot with range and can play three to four positions on the court.” Tollefsen played for the Lakeshow 17 AAU team this past summer, with his team winning the San Francisco City Tournament championship.

“We’re thrilled to be able to showcase WCC basketball to such a large audience during the conference season,” West Coast Con-ference Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich said. “This is an exciting time to be a part of the West Coast Conference. Not only are we coming off one of the best years in con-ference history, we once again have one of the top television agreements in the country thanks to our partnerships with Comcast, Cox, ESPN and Fox.”

Once again, the West Coast Conference has worked with partners Comcast and Channel 4 San Diego to create a regional syndication package for a number of WCC games. Most games will be broadcast live in the markets of both participating teams, including fi ve of the top 55 markets in the nation: the San Francisco Bay Area, Sac-ramento, Portland, Seattle and San Diego. The Comcast games will air regionally on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, Com-cast SportsNet California, and Comcast SportsNet Northwest.

games to a national audience.

The regional telecasts kick off Saturday, January 8 when USF visits Santa Clara in a game televised on CSN California. That same night, Portland visits Gonzaga (FSN Northwest), and Saint Mary’s travels to Pepperdine (Prime Ticket).

Last season, four West Coast Conference teams appeared in postseason play for just the second time in league history. WAR MEMORIAL GETS A FACELIFT

During the Summer of 2009, USF Ath-letics honored a remarkable past and prepared for the next generation with a major renovation in War Memori-al Gym. Among a number of improve-ments was the fi rst fl oor replacement done since the arena opened in 1958-59. Along with the new hardwood fl oor-ing, the gym is sporting a fresh court design and a new coat of paint from fl oor to ceiling. The wooden bleachers on the ends of the court were replaced, and new lights were installed.

Upon entering War Memorial Gym, fans will notice a number of other changes, starting with new entranc-es with to the arena, new retired jer-seys hanging above the court, as well as new NCAA and conference champi-onship banners, celebrating the legacy and tradition of USF’s basketball and volleyball programs.

Prior to the 2010-11 season, new lights were added to the facility to further en-hance the fan experience.
