"Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong" by Terry Teachout(Houghton Mifin Harcourt, $30)

Reviewed by Larry CoxTo say that Louis Armstrong had an impact on American

music is a little like stating that Picasso dabbled in art.Armstrong, one of the greatest musicians ever, was born

in New Orleans just before the turn of the last century. Helearned to play the cornet in an orphans' home. He leftthe Crescent City during the early 1920s and settled inChicago, where he joined King Oliver's band. It was hisinventiveness that set him apart, and eventually establishedhim as an international star.

In a highly readable newbiography, author and WallStreet Journal drama criticTerry Teachout draws ona cache of important newsources unavailable to previous biographers to bring Armstrong, the man

behind the legend, intosharp focus, perhaps for therst time.

Armstrong, one of themost inventive, improvising soloists in jazz, cut a seriesof recordings during the early years of his career knownas the "Hot Fives" and "Hot Sevens." These historic cutsremain as crisp and relevant as when they were rst issuedmore than 80 years ago. Armstrong was more than a jazzmusician, however. His unique voice was recognizablethroughout the world and it, too, helped dene and expandAmerican jazz. He had the musical punch to knock eventhe Beatles off the top of the charts.

What gives this biography legs is its almost sweepingnarrative that squarely places both Armstrong and hismusic in context. Some of the more fascinating aspectsof this book detail how he came close to being rubbed outby the Chicago mob, the real reason why he broke rankswith President Dwight Eisenhower, and the facts behindhis marijuana arrest in 1930. Teachout also manages todelicately sort out Armstrong's complicated private life.

This is a rst-rate biography, and tting becauseArmstrong deserves nothing less. Like his music,Armstong's life story is inspiring and an absolute joy.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are a lunchtimefavorite. Although Dr. George Washington Carver inventedmore than 300 uses for the peanut, the invention of peanutbutter isnt on the list of his accomplishments. The rstU.S. patents for peanut butter were issued to MarcellusGilmore Edson of Montreal, Quebec, in 1884 and J. H.Kellog in 1897.

Edson created his version of peanut butter by millingroasted peanuts between heated surfaces until the peanutsreached a uid or semi-uid state and a consistencylike that of butter, lardor ointment. Health andcereal guru J.H. Kelloggcalled the pasty substancehe created nut butter.

Making a peanut buttersandwich using organic

products is an easy wayto create a healthy lunch.Peanut butter contains highlevels of monounsaturatedfats and resveratrol, whichhelp to protect againstthe risk of cardiovasculardisease. Peanut butter is packed with protein and containsvitamins B3 and E, magnesium, folate and dietary ber.

Recently, there have been some concerns about peanutallegeries, especially among schoolchildren. Many schoolsnow have a peanut table or forbid trading lunches atschool. Check your schools peanut policy before packingyour childs lunch.

Theses recipes for Apple Peanut Butter on CinnamonRaisin Bread and Grilled PB&J Sandwiches are great forbreakfast, lunch or as an after-school snack. Changing thetype of bread you use for your peanut butter sandwiches

adds variety and more nutrients. Some children preferwhite bread, and now white whole-grain wheat bread isavailable. White whole-wheat bread is made with the whole grainand an albino or white variety of wheat. The albino wheatis lighter in color and has a sweet, mild avor.

You can make the Apple Peanut Butter sandwiches thenight before and store them, wrapped, in the refrigerator.Grilled Peanut Butter Sandwiches also make a deliciouslyeasy to make breakfast or snack.

Apple Peanut Butter on Cinnamon Raisin BreadWhen sliced apples are exposed to air they start to turn

brown from oxidation. Dip the apples in a mixture of waterand a fresh lemon juice to keep them beautifully crisp.

    1 small organic apple

unpeeled or peeled, cored and sliced or shredded1/2 cup organic peanut butter2 tablespoons organic honey

8 slices whole-grain cinnamon raisin bread

In a small bowl, mix together the peanut butter andhoney. Spread about 2 tablespoons of the peanut butter

onto one side of each slice of 4 pieces of the bread. Placean equal amount of the sliced or shredded apple on top ofthe peanut butter. Place the remaining slice of bread on

top of the apple to make a sandwich. Serve immediatelyor wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. Makes 4

    sandwiches.Grilled Peanut Butter and Jelly

    Paws Cornerby Sam Mazzotta

To Your Good Healthby Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Catch a Chill, Catch a Cold? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My friend and I have anongoing discussion about how we catch colds. I believethe only way is by being exposed to a germ. My friendagrees, but also says you can become chilled, and thatresults in a cold. Please settle this once and for all. L.G. ANSWER: The only way to catch a cold is to meet upwith a cold virus. But lets kick this around a little while itlies there quivering.

Rhinoviruses are responsible for many colds. This virusis passed from one person to another most often via thehands and ngers. An infected person invariably will havevirus on his or her hands and ngers. If that person touchesanother persons hands or ngers, the virus is transferred. All the second person has to do is touch his or her nose oreyes and the virus has found a new home. (The drainagechannel for tears siphons viruses into the nose.) Its also possible to spread a cold through sneezing or coughing, but thats a secondary route.

Many colds are preceded by a body chill. Thats partof the infection symptoms, and that might be what your

friend refers to.Once a virus lands in a persons nose, the time till the

development of cold symptoms is short eight to 12 hours.Runny nose, nasal stufness, scratchy throat, cough andsneezing are typical symptoms. They peak in 48 hours and aregone in about one week. A person is most contagious duringthe rst three days of symptoms, when nasal discharge is athigh volume and when it contains the most viruses.

If by chilling your friend means being in a coldblast of air or getting your feet wet in frigid weather andshivering as a result, she has a slight point. That kind ofchilling constricts the noses blood vessels and decreasesmucus production. It might, therefore, permit cold virusesto mount a more effective attack and can contribute to theease of catching a cold. All the same, without the virusthere is no cold. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 34 and have beenjogging for 10 years. I do it year-round.

Ive noticed this winter that my knees feel stiff before Irun. They dont hurt during the run or after. Could this bea sign that Im getting arthritis? B.C. ANSWER: Its not likely that at age 34 youre comingdown with arthritis. Its more likely a weather thing.Cold weather thickens joint uid. That makes joints stiff.Warming the uid by exercise relieves the stiffness. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: As a calorie counter fromway back, will I lose weight if I eat 1,500 calories a day?How about if I eat 1,200 calories one day and 1,800 thenext? K.T. ANSWER: If you burn more than 1,500 calories a daybut take in only 1,500 calories, you should lose weight.

You can still lose if one day you take in slightly moreand the next day slightly less. You can count the caloriedecit over a weeks time. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individualletters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible.

Readers may write him or request an order form of available healthnewsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Indoor Pool Reeks o Chlorine Q: My parents moved into a condominium complexfor retirees that has an indoor pool. The pool just reeks ofchlorine all the time, and I dont think its healthy. Whatcan I say to the condo management to get them to reducethe amount of chlorine in the pool? I worry about my dadsbreathing. Larry L., Omaha A: Tell them basically what youve told me. Themanagement may try to reassure you that the levelsof chlorine are safe or that the odor of chlorine is to beexpected in an indoor environment. And they may becorrect a mild chlorine odor is not unexpected around aheated pool in an enclosed area.

But if the odor of chlorine is irritating or overpowering, the manager may want to check with the maintenancecrew to make sure their pool maintenance procedures areeffective. Indoor pools need extra attention, especially pools

used by many people. The pH balance needs to be monitoredand quickly correctly. The pool area needs to be adequatelyvented so that gases emitted during the chlorination processexit quickly and fresh air comes in.

Swimming procedures may need to be reviewed, along with maintenance, if an acrid smell or cloudy wateris noticed. Swimmers should rinse off before climbinginto the pool; the condo association can remind residentsof this.

So, communicate your concerns to management, andencourage your parents to communicate the problem attheir next condo association meeting (or do so by proxy iflegally allowed). Swimming is supposed to be an enjoyableexperience, not an hour of eye-watering misery. HOME TIP: Achieving pH balance is critical to poolhealth. High pH slows chlorine/sanitizer activity, whilelow pH speeds chlorine activity but may lead to strongchlorine odor and an acid feel to the water. Road Warrior Ambrose Has Loty Goals

Marcos Ambroses achievements have been somewhatobscured.

Juan Pablo Montoya is in the midst of quite a breakthrough. Drivers with road-racing backgroundshave seldom fared well driving stock cars on ovals, andMontoya made the 2009 Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Ambrose is another ex-road racer who has shownconsiderable progress, but his achievements have beenovershadowed by Montoya, the Colombian who competedsuccessfully in Formula One before turning his attentionto NASCAR.

Ambrose a native of Tasmania, an island off thesouthern coast of Australia drove touring cars inAustralia before giving the States a shot. Touring cars areshaped somewhat like American stock cars, but are moretechnically advanced.

In his rst full season of Sprint Cup competition,Ambrose nished in the top ve four times and nished17th in the point standings. He nished second in WatkinsGlen, N.Y., and third in both Sonoma, Calif., and Bristol,Tenn.

It was a wonderful year for me, said Ambrose. Itwas a year that was either going to work out how it has, orI was going to pack my bags and come home.I needed to have a breakout year. When you get to the Cuplevel full-time, you really have to make an impression, andI think I did that.

Ambrose said his next goal is win a race and contendfor the Chase.

He hopes his success will draw other Australians to trytheir hand at NASCAR.

I think raising awareness of Australia and Australianracing in the U.S. is working really well. People are sayingMarcos Ambrose ... where did he come from? ... Beingan Australian in NASCAR has worked out great.Ambrose stressed, though, that the transition hasnt beenan easy one.

I took on a huge challenge, and I didnt expect it towork out, he said. As it did, I started to see blue sky infront of me, and Im just having a good time.

On the race track, it took a lot of time to actually gainthe respect from my peers, and I got picked on for quitea while, but was able to hold my own, and I didnt stepout of line too much whilst I was trying to learn and get tothe front. ... It hasnt been any master plan; its just beenkeeping to the fundamentals. Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston(N.C.) Gazette since 1993. Chase Those Winter Blues

Theres one sure-re way to get through a cold winterand ght the blues: Think spring. This is the perfect time

to start planning for warm weather. Here are some ideas:

Plan a garden, whether that means pots on your balcony,a bigger space in your yard or a spot in a communitygarden. Send for catalogs and lay out your plans on paper.

Meanwhile, a green plant or two in your living spacecan help you think spring, as well as cleaning the air. (Ifyou have pets, be sure that you can put the plants wherethey cant get to them.)

Design the perfect cruise or vacation. Check online forinformation, but go through a local travel agency, as itssafer than ordering anything online. For adventures closerto home, ask the senior center if it is planning any localtrips.

Investigate warm weather volunteer work, such asassisting with Habitat for Humanity. Not all of its workinvolves heavy lifting.

Meanwhile, staying active now is a good way to ght

any depression while we get through the winter. Thinknew.

Look for new places to walk: malls, local high-schoolgyms, other neighborhoods.

Study something new. Check a local college to see ifthere are classes you can audit. Find a new author andborrow books from the library. (Reference librarians lovethe question, What do I read next?) Check classes inpottery or stained glass and get a head start on next yearsChristmas gifts.

Join or start a group that exchanges recipes, readsselected books, does photography, plays with animals atthe local shelter or rents weekly videos.

If theres a hobby youve wanted to try, winter is a goodtime to start. Take advantage of all the information on theInternet, either on your own computer or one at the library.

    Dollars and SenseBy David Ufngton

Vietnam-Era Veterans ClaimsWhenever the 10-year Census is done,

multiple federal agencies negotiate in advanceabout what questions are to be included. Theyall want specic information. After the Census isnished, groups and agencies have access to theinformation, which they study and use to makepolicy.

Little would one expect that the answers tothe long form of the 2000 Census would be usedto form opinions about why there are increasingnumbers of claims by Vietnam-era veterans.

But sure enough, a study was done of theanswers to the disability questions on the Census, the work questions and those about incomeas well. And their determination was that theincreasing rate of claims by Vietnam-era veteranshas to do with changes in the rules and level of

education. With Agent Orange, for example, they say that

the number of claims skyrocketed after it wasdetermined that AO exposure caused diabetes. There were no claims in 2001, but thousandswithin a year after diabetes was determined to beservice connected.

The biggie is claims for Post-Traumatic StressDisorder. Researchers contend that claims andpayments for PTSD among Vietnam-era veteransare soaring, and that it has to do more with loweremployment opportunities than actual illness. They point to low-educated men who havemore nancial incentive to come up with anillness and le for compensation. Between 1995and 2005, the number of claims doubled.

Further, they say that there is a decrease inmental-health visits of 82 percent once an IU

(Individually Unemployed) determination ofPTSD has been made.

Policy changes, researchers say, andincentives are the real causes of the increasingnumber of PTSD claims.
