Cool Drinks for Hot Days Baby,it’shotoutside!Therecentheatwavehasincreasedtheneedtoreplenishyourbodyandavoidheatexhaustion.Sweatingisthebody’swayofnaturallycoolingitself.Keepinmindthatyourbodyisactuallylosingfluidsasyousweat,so it is important to replace them.Watermakesupabout60percentofyourbody’sweightandisanimportantpartofmanybodyprocesses.Besideshelpingtoregulatebodytemperature,waterispresentineverycellinthebodyandhelpsprotectsomebodytissues.Wateralsohelpstotrans-portnutrientsandaideswiththeeliminationofbodilywaste. By the timeyoubecome thirsty, youmayhave alreadylost2percentofyourbodyfluids.Milddehydrationiswhenyou have lost 2 percent to 5 percent of your bodyfluids.Symptomsofmilddehydrationincludethirst,drymouthandthroat,rapidpulse,lowbloodpressure,weaknessoralackofenergy,andreducedquantityofurine.Whenthereisafluidlossofmorethan5percent, thebodyhasseverereactionsthatincludepaleskin;bluishfingertipsandlips;rapid,shal-lowbreathing;weak,irregularpulse;andconfusionordis-orientation.Itcanresultinshock,seizures,comaanddeath. A person who burns about 2,000 calories should getabout 8 to 12 cups offluid per day. (Mostwomenburnlessthan2,000calories,whilemenworkingoutsidewouldburnmore.)Thatmight sound like a lot to drink, but itdoesn’t all have to come from drinkingwater.Many ofthefoodsweeatcontainahighpercentageofwater,andthat counts as a portion of the 8 to 12 cups of neededfluid.Hydrating foods such as celery, cucumber, lettuceand summer squash are 90 percent to 95 percentwater.Grapefruit,strawberries,broccoliandtomatoare90per-centto94percentwater,andmilk,yogurt,eggwhites,fruitjuices,applesandcarrotsare80percentto89percentwa-

Keep in mind that the thirst mechanism can becomeweak in senior citizens, so theymayneed to implementawayofassuringtheydrinkenoughwater.Somepeoplefillapitcherwithsixorsocupsofwaterinthemorningandmakesure that theydrink theentirecontentsby thetimetheygotobed.Attheotherendofthelifespanarechildren,whooftenignorethirstcues.Itisimportanttoas-suretheyaredrinkingenoughfluids,especiallyifthey’replayingoutdoors.Agoodgaugeofhydrationisthecoloroftheirurine.Adark-yellowcolorisanindicatortheyarenotdrinkingenoughfluids. Thisyear’sthemeestablishedbytheWorldAllianceforBreastfeedingAdvocacyis:“TALKTOME!BREASTFEEDING–A3DEXPERIENCE.Thefocusisontheimportanceofconnectionbetweenmotherandbaby(2-dimensions)aswellasthethirddimensionofsupportfromthehealthcareprovider,friend,familymember,orcitizen. Know Your Pet’s ‘Safe Area’ DEAR READERS: I recently received a report fromtheUniversityofMissouriaboutadognamed“Sugar,”aCockerSpanielwhowasbadlyinjuredinthetornadothatravagedJoplin,Mo.Whenherownersgrabbedherandranforthesafetyoftheirbasementshelter,“Sugar,sensingtheincreasedfearofherowners,becamepanickyandboltedbackupstairstoherown‘safearea,”aspotunderoneofthebeds.’With the tornado almost atop their house, theownerscouldnotleavethesheltertoretrieveher. Sugarsurvivedthetornado,althoughshewasbadlyin-jured andhad lost useofherhind legs.Veterinarians attheUniversityofMissouriper-formed emergency surgery tocorrecttheinjurytoherspine.Aftermanydaysofphysicalre-habilitationandtherapy,Sugarisrecoveringwithherowners. Inadditiontothisencouragingstory of recovery, what caughtmy interest was that Sugar’sownersknewexactlywhereshepreferred to hide when some-thingscarywashappening.Thisdoesn’t seem like much, butknowingyourpet’s favoritehidingplacescanbea lifesav-ing advantage in an emergency.With Sugar, unfortunately,thiswasnotthecase,asshewasfoundseveralblocksaway.Therewasnothingmoreherownerscoulddowithoutputtingthemselvesinmortaldanger(somethingelsethatisimportanttokeepinmindinanemergency). ANSWER:Broken-heartsyndromeisforreal.It’sare-centadditiontothecatalogofillnesses.Japanesedoctorsfirstdescribed it, andcalled itTako-tsubocardiomyopa-thy.Cardiomyopathyisaheartillnessthataffectstheheartmuscle,nottheheartarteriesorheartvalves. Theclassicalcaseisonewhereapersondevelopsse-verechestdiscomfortprecededbyphysicaloremotion-al stress.The emotional stress couldbe theunexpecteddeathofalovedone.AnEKGshowsapatternthatrep-licatesthepatternofaheartattack.Theheart’sfunctionis greatly compromised.
