    Donna's Day:

    Creative Family Funby Donna Erickson

Apple Crisp With a Berry TwistThere is something about fall, with its cooler days and

the abundance of juicy apples, that brings out the baker inus all. Brisk breezes and rustling leaves almost seem towhisper apple crisp.

Measure, stir and bake this mouthwatering apple dessertusing autumns apple harvest and colorful, juicy frozenblackberries. In this recipe the steps are not only simple, but also mixed with play! Every member of the family willwant to be part of the preparation, not to mention the tast-ing when it comes out of the oven!

    APPLE BLACkBERRy CRiSP

Filling:5 apples or about 4 cups when peeled and sliced1 cup frozen blackberries, thawed slightly1 cup granulated sugar1 tablespoon ourJuice from one lemon

Topping:1 cup all-purpose our2 cups quick oats2/3 cup granulated sugar1 tablespoon brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamonPinch of salt1/2 cup melted butter

    1. To make the crisp, peel the apples. If your children areskilled at using a vegetable peeler, make peeling the applesa game. Start at the stem, and peel in a spiral motion. Tryto make the longest strip without breaking it. If your kidsare competitive, theyll have the apples peeled in no time!

    2. Cut the peeled apples into 1/4-inch slices. While youare at it, for a surprise, cut an apple in half widthwise toreveal a star design in the middle. Place the slices in a

large bowl. Add slightly thawed blackberries, sugar, ourand lemon juice. Combine and spoon into a medium-size8-inch-by-11-inch baking dish.

    3. For the topping, in another bowl, stir together theour, oats, sugars, cinnamon, salt and melted butter. Mix

lightly until crumbly. Sprinkle this topping mixture withngers over apples and berries. Press lightly.

    4. Place in preheated oven. If you have a window onyour oven door, let the kids keep watch to observe whenthe fruit juices bubble up through the browned topping. That will be the clue that the apple-berry crisp is done, about 30 minutes.

    5. Serve warm with a dollop of whipped cream or ascoop of vanilla ice cream and a sprig of mint on top. Thengive yourselves a standing ovation! Extra idea: Add a teaspoon or two of leftover berry

juice to the whipped cream. Swirl it around to create a pur-ple marbled effect, and then spoon on top of each serving.

Are Strays a Threat to Housecats? DEAR PAWS CORNER: We have several apparentlystray cats that can be seen wandering the neighborhood in

the early morning and at night. Im not sure where theycame from, but there is a large stand of pine trees and scrubbehind our subdivision. Im afraid to let my cats out evenduring the day, as I worry they could come in contact withor be attacked by one of these strays. What can I do? Gary in Tampa

DEAR GARY: Contact your local animal-control ofceabout the stray cats. They may be a colony of feral cats cats that have lived their entire lives apart from humans. Ifso, they most likely cant be socialized. This is an ongoing problem in Florida, particularly, as fe-ral cat colonies grow in suburban areas. And yes, it makesgoing outside somewhat dangerous for your housecats. If possible, keep them indoors at all times. If you have ascreened enclosure, they can hang out there, as long as thescreen has no holes that would allow them to escape.Keep your cats immunizations up to date, as diseases likeFIV (feline immunodeciency virus) and rabies are com-

mon among feral cat populations. If one of your cats isattacked or you see it in contact with a feral cat, take yourcat straight to the vet.

Now, it is possible that animal control will not trap thecats wandering your neighborhood. Or, they may catchthem, yet youll see more cats turn up. What some animalwelfare groups are doing since shelters are full already is trapping the cats, having them spayed or neutered

and given immunizations, and then releasing them backto their colony. The hope is that fewer breeding cats willreduce the feral population.

capture this upcoming season.Q: I loved the TV show Lost and have been wonder-

ing about the man who played Saw-

yer. He is such a good actor. Do youhave any info on what hes doing

now? Janet R., Newark, Ohio A: The handsome Josh Holloway,42, has been keeping pretty busy since

Lost ended last year. You can seehim again soon on the big screen inMission: Impossible Ghost Proto-

col. In the movie, which hits theaterson Dec. 21, Josh plays Trevor Han-away, a member of Ethan Hunts (played by Tom Cruise) Mis -

sion Impossible force, along with Ving Rhames and AcademyAward-nominee Jeremy Renner.

Q: I really liked your idea a few months back of havingBeth Littleford (of Crazy Stupid Love) playing JamesSpaders wife in The Ofce this season, but now I hearMaura Tierney has been tapped for the part. Is that true? If

Q: I am heartbroken that Fox has canceled AmericasMost Wanted. Ive watched the show since the beginning,

and I am so proud of all the good John Walsh and his crewhave done to get those dirtbags off the streets! Is there anaddress for Fox that we can write to, hopefully to changetheir minds? Gertrude T., via e-mail A: I have good news for you, Gertrude. Lifetime Televi-sion recently announced that it has picked up John Walshstop crime-ghting show, which will return for its 25thseason later this year. While there is not an exact airdatescheduled as of this writing, keep an eye on this columnfor updates as I get them. Also, check online at www.ce-lebrityextraonline.com as December gets closer for my ex-clusive interview with John Walsh about the resurrection

    Josh Hollowa

so, what do you think about that? Holly T., via e-mail A: While Maura is no stranger to comedy she co-starred on News Radio from 1995-99 she usuallyplays the straight (wo)man, which is exactly what JamesSpader needs, now that we are getting a better idea of whathis character, Robert California, is like. So now I makethis modest proposal: How about we cast Beth as Rob-erts Scranton mistress? Her offbeat and hilarious senseof humor, along with her improv skills and deadpan hu-mor, would make her the perfect secret lover for the newboss, as well as an excellent foil for the rest of the cast. Are

you listening, Paul Lieberstein and crew? Q: I really like the reality/survival series, The Colony,on the Discovery Channel. When will the third seasonstart? Jane R., Philadelphia A: According to a Discovery Channel representative, currently there are no plans to bring The Colony back in2011. Ill keep checking and keep you posted as I learn anymore details for 2012.
