DuetoHazel&Christinenotbeingtheretogatherchildren,Tim&Martywerereferredthroughfivedifferentpeopletofindanyonewhocouldassist,eventuallyEricaCDEPworkervolunteeredtodrivethebus,&helproundupthechildren.(Wesuspectthatthechildrenmayhavebeenledtoexpectthattheywerecomingtoaperformanceratherthanaworkshop). Thegirlswereshy&mixedasagroup.Oneolderwomanhelpedtranslate&encourageparticipationatfirst.Girlswerenotalldressedappropriately.Attemptstoteachsomersaults,cat&mouse&balancingwereonlypartiallysuccessful.Theyallsaidnexttimetheywouldwearshorts&afterawhilewedecidedtocontinuetheactivitiesbymakingstars.Thisactivityprovedtobemoresuccessfulasitencouragedconversation&workingtogetherincloseproximity,i.e.gaffasticking,passing,helpingholdtheconstructions,tellingnames&showingphotos&tellingthemwhywewerethere. Tim&Davidwereleftatsea,&decidedthatmakingstarswouldbegood.Initiallytheboysjustwatchedintently,butdidnotparticipate,untilonestarhadbeenmade,thensomeleft&othersbegangaffering.Theolderboysweredistractedbutthenhelpedmakethestars.Whenthegirlsreturnedtheboysleftexceptone,whoplayedtapes.Othersreturned&wedidsomerapdancinginthestoreroom(asmallerseparateenclosedspace).Aneedformoresetmaterialbecameobvious. R.A.T.Estudentsdidnotparticipateinrehearsalorshowwhichhadbeenplanned.SeveralUmbakumbapeoplewerepresentbutdidnotparticipate. SHOW Costumeswerehandedout;notonlydidtheworkshopparticipantscametocollectthembutkidswehadneverseenbefore;blackandwhite. CollecteddrumsticksandstartedbeatingthedrumfirsttomusicwhilewaitingforGuy,thenintorehearseddrummingpatternsasothersjoinedinforthebeginningoftheshow.Theenergywasfocusedandcharged.Therewereabout60to80kids.Theymovedintorehearsedshow,beatingthesticksontheground,clandance,clanpuppetmardigras,battlewithspirit,Amarrangabanddance,“jump”bow“jump”. Halfthekidshadregularlyrehearsedwithus,aquarterhadbeenonceortwiceandtheotherquarterwehadneverseenbefore.Thisaffectedtheclarityoftheshowbutnottheenergy‐itfeltstronglylikeacommunityevent. Theshowwasquiteextraordinary‐between10and80performers,evenwhitekidsjoinedin.Somuchforrehearsals.Alargenumberoftheperformershadneverbeentoonebefore.Simplisticstructuresaccommodatedtheirjoiningin.Everypuppet,prop,stick,costumeswirledaroundthecourt.Wecouldhavehadevenmore;stillperhapsitwouldnothavebeenenough.Aftertheshowteachersandschoolprincipalhelpedinbreakdown.EveryoneseemedpleasedthoughwehadnodirectfeedbackfromMurabudaorthecommunityelderswhomighthavehadsomethingusefultosay.Tim:Well,wemadeabout200peoplehappyandgaveabout60peopleapositiveperformanceexperience,achievingouraimsandthecommunity’s.RobertAmaguladidthediscoandtwobandsplayed.Marty,Guyandmanyschoolstaffdidtheirbit.Inaveryhighdegreeofdifficultyrating,wescoredwell.David:Show‐time:Thereweremorepeopleinvolvedthanweexpected.Morethanthosewhousuallygotoschool.Thechildrenbehavedasexpected‐ieolderchildrenweretooshamedtoparticipate;childrenwehadneverseenperformed;performersflockedtightlyaroundus;detailwaslimited,performersfollowedwhatwedidasamob.Itwasgoodtonoticethatkidswehadworkedwithfollowedbetter.Itwasononehandastrugglewithsomepeoplehavingnoideawhattheyshouldbedoingandjustgettingintheway,butitwasasIexpectedinitially.AudienceseemedOK.Manyintheircarsanddeepintheshadows.Impossibletogaugethenumber.Itwasatreatforthewhitepeopleofthetown‐manywhoseemednevertohavehadawayintoAboriginalactivity.Aftertheshow,bands“Amarrunga”and“PoisonWhisky”played.RobynLaidlawsaid“Well,youhadmuchmoreactivitythenthebands!”IenjoyedPoisonWhiskywhowereverytight.Audiencelikedthistoo.ItfeltstrangetobedancingwithLanceasweweretheonlytwomaleadultsdancing.Ithinkwehavedoneanalmostimpossiblething,withallthedeathsandalmostaninexistentsupportfromthecommunity.Thefeedbacksofarhasmainlybeenfromwhitepeoplewhothoughtitwasanamazingthing.TheyhavetroubleengagingAboriginalpeopleininterestingactivities.AmarrungaBandplayedwiththeirbacksmostlytoaudience.Carspinningaroundatendwasbothexcitingandscary.Thedangerelement.Oneladycrossingtheovalattheendwasangryaboutsomethingandwasshoutingthingssuchas“Gohome,youwhitecunts”.Itworriesmethatifyouconnectthatwiththecardrivingandhaveanangrypersonbehindthewheel,thenitwouldbeeasytocausemuchheartache.Martytoldofatimeacardrovestraightthroughthebandequipment.Zhodi:8.30pmcame,costumesweregivenoutandeveryonecollectedthedrums.Thedrumbeatsbeganinperfecttiming.Itwasdark;therewerekidsaroundeverydrum.Anticipation,enthusiasm,
