It was fantastic to see our students all participating during the day and being sun safe in their swimming shirts/rashies. Check out our page of photos of our day. Thank you to our wonderful student leaders in the school who worked hard assisting and keeping our younger students safe during the Early Childhood part of the Swimming Carnival. Maruchel, Sophie, Lachlan, Cooper, Amity and Kayla worked non-stop both in and out of the pool. Thank you also to the other students and staff who worked hard both before and after the carnival, setting up, to ensure such a great event could take place. This week we are holding our 3 Way Conferences between teachers, parents AND students. The teachers have been very busy compiling all the assessment data that they have on students, as well as conferencing with each student on their learning goals for this year. At the 3 Way Conferences students will have the opportunity to share this with their parents and then for all parties to agree to the goal/s. This continues our work on developing our students into being assessment capable learners, who can identify their own learning journey and understand what this journey looks like. If you have not been able to book an appointment with your child’s classroom teacher this week, I encourage you and your child to make an appointment for another week. At our school we aim to create a safe and supportive school community for everyone. Sometimes, it can be difficult for parents or carers to know what to do when their child talks to them about bullying. You are an important part of our work to prevent bullying and to respond effectively if it happens. Stopping bullying involves everyone. If your child talks to you about bullying: 1. Listen calmly and get the full story. Your calm response is important to allow your child to tell you all about the situation. After they’ve told you their story, ask questions to get more details if you need to: who, what, where, when. Although you may feel some strong emotions about your child’s experience, try to keep calm to avoid more distress to your child. 2. Reassure your child they are not to blame. Many children blame themselves and this may make them feel even worse. You could say things like, ‘That sounds really hard to deal with. No one should have to put up with that.’ or ‘I’m so glad you told me. You should be able to feel safe at school; that’s not fair at all’. 3. Ask your child what they want to do and what they want you to do. A critical part of your response is to avoid jumping in to solve the problem. While it is natural to want to protect your child, helping them to find their own solution is a better option. It helps them feel they have some power in the situation. 4. Visit www.bullyingnoway.gov.au to find some strategies. The website has tips and ideas for different bullying situations. One idea is to practice strategies at home to help your child feel more confident. 5. Contact the school. Your child may be reluctant for you to do this, so discuss the idea and reassure them that the school would want to know and is able to help. Make an appointment to meet with your child’s teacher and, if you need to, ask to talk with the principal. Contact the school immediately if you have a concern about your child’s safety. 6. Check in regularly with your child. Keep the conversation going. It can take time to resolve issues, so check in regularly with your child about their experiences and their feelings. Your ongoing support is important.

Road Safety has been brought to my attention last week, with members of the public voicing their concern with

the number of incidents which people have witnessed.

Cars not stopping for students at the crossing

Students not stopping and checking roads before crossing on their bikes

In this weeks newsletter I have included a brochure on Road Safety, I encourage parents to read this with their

children. I have also asked teachers to cover Road Safety in lessons over the next few weeks. With the

beginning of work happening on the Childcare Centre across the road which will disrupt the normal flow of

traffic, it is especially important that we all be reminded of our responsibilities as road users.

Just a reminder that the last day of school for students this term is Wednesday 1st April, 2015. Teachers

will be participating in a Visible Learning Foundation Day workshop at Angurugu on the Thursday 2nd April.

2015 Swimming Carnival by Red backs Sports Captain Maruchel Snell

On the 13th of March, Alyangula Area School hosted their 2015 Swimming Carnival. Redbacks vs Scorpions.

The event started at 8.30am, although, Sports Captains, School captains, middle school students and teachers went

to the pool at 6.30am to help set up the event. At 8.30am the Transitions, Year 1 and Year 2 started their events. The

little kids all enjoyed themselves very much, both teams did their best in every race, and cheered for their teams

throughout the event. There were 6 students who helped with the little kids, they swan beside them and encour-

aged them to do their very best right through to the very end of the race.

At 10.30am the little kids races had finished. Mrs. Jefferson announced the scores for both teams. Redbacks were

winning by almost 200 points.

There were heaps of parents that supported their kids and also teachers who supported their house teams.

Redbacks were in front by 200 points but they still had the whole day to keep it up. It was up to the Year 3 to Year

9’s to win the carnival.

After the freestyle, breast stroke and backstroke activities were done there was a twenty minute lunch break. After

lunch they continued with the relays and team events. By the end of the day

everyone was exhausted.

Mrs. Jefferson announced the winners which were Scorpions. Redbacks were upset

to hand over the trophy to the scorpions, but the Redbacks sports captains were still

pleased that everyone had tried their best, and were sure that they would take it

back next year.

After the announcement, Mrs. Jefferson gave everyone a bit of free time in the pool

while the adults packed up.

By the end of the day it didn’t matter who had won or lost, just that everyone had fun.

Youth Leadership Forum

On Tuesday 17th March four students represented our school at the Anindilyakwa Youth Forum. Our representatives were Michael Gill, Amity Pearce, Dayron Pascoe & Rexelda Durilla. These students were fortunate enough to travel to Umbakumba to participate in the Forum in conjunction with students from Angurugu, Umbakumba and Milyakburra schools. The Youth Forum has been designed to offer leadership development, communication and engagement skills. These students will meet regularly and be the voice of their peers raising ideas for the preparation and planning of the One People One Voice festival to be held later in the year. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and thought it was a worthwhile opportunity.
