Touch Rugby State Championships
Last week, a group of our students and one student from Angurugu travelled to Gove to represent our
Eylandt in the Touch Rugby State Championships.
Lachlan Connell, Daniel Connell, Cooper Sandy, Joe DeLange, Ethan Fitzsimons, Kyle Petith and Hudson
Dungey all helped form the basis of the Arnhem Groote Team.
While we did not win a game, the boys competed very hard and had a couple of close matches against
Arnhem Gove and PARRS and kept a very tough Alice Springs squad (who eventually won the
championship) in check for over half the game.
These competitions are not all about sport. They were a massive learning curve for the boys as they tried
to understand what it is like to compete against the best kids in State. They learned what it is like to be
disappointed and have success, sometimes in a very, very short span. They learned how to take sport
seriously and come together as a team – and what it truly means to be supportive of one another.
Because of their teamwork and the way they demonstrated sportsmanship, our team was awarded the
‘Spirit Award.’
Another positive to take away from this tournament is that Kyle Petith and Lachlan Connell were both
acknowledged for their fantastic individual efforts. Kyle was recognised as one of the top 20 players in the
competition, just missing out on the reserve squad. If Lachlan wasn’t leaving us to travel to Tonga, he
would be travelling instead to Perth for the Touch Rugby National Championships in October and
represent the NT squad against all the other states. Because of this recognition, Lachlan and Kyle got to
play in a squad game competing against the other 20 best players from the NT. They played admirably
and Kyle even got the game’s first try! It is a massive accomplishment for Lachlan and Kyle and our small
school. Well done, boys!
