A Cultural Compet e ncy programm e Last week Maori Affa i rs Mini ster Pita Sharpl es a nno unced a new Cultural Co mp ete ncy pro gramme under which Teachers will be required to learn the Māori competencies under new rules to be introduced next month. The programme would begin to be introduced later this year and would be in every school by the end of 2012. It requires teachers to study tikanga Māori and te reo during their university studies, training courses and at school. It is good to see te reo competency being recognised as a core part of a teacher’s role. It also recognises that having a teaching workforce with a more in-depth knowledge of te reo and tikanga Māori has a big impact on Māori student mo t i vat i on and a chievem ent. What teachers and schools will need however is solid resourcing and ongoing professional development. It’s important that any training in te reo and tikanga Māori is backed up by regular opportunities for teachers to enhance their knowledge and skills in the classroom. This initiative will undoubtedly pose challenges for teacher education institutions as there is a shortage of fluent te reo teachers generally. At a school level we welcome details on exactly how the programme would work in practice and just how cultural competency would be measured. An invitation to attend an On Line Safety Seminar The Link Learning ICT Cluster of Schools – of which our school is a part, is offering parents/caregivers an opportunity to learn more about Cybersafety. You are invited to a presentation on the subject to be held on Tuesday 21 June 7pm at the Honest Lawyer, Monaco Are you worried about your child’s safety on line? Come along and discuss issues around cyber safety and how to keep yourself and your children safe on line. This presentation will provide practical advice to help you address the ten most pressing cyber safety issues. Our thoughts go out to the Christchurch people who have been doing their best to get their lives back on track after the September and February quakes. One family had only just returned to Christchurch on Saturday and now this … If they return we will welcome then with open arms. In the meantime we hope that new damage is only minimal and that they and others will be able to continue the rebuild. Matariki Matariki continues to be our focus this month and children are engaged in a wide range of activities as they learn about the significance of this event. Kahikatea have a great display in their corridor and children from other syndicates have been taking part in more active pursuits. If you get a chance later in the week or even early next week you might like to call by Totara Syndicate classrooms and view thei r f l ax/raupo kites. (Some pi ctures on p age 2—Ed .) Dental Clinic Dental services based at the school will cease from the end of this week. Services for our children will take place at a new ‘super clinic’ located in Franklyn Street. We don’t know when that will start but I expect to receive notification when the operational details have been worked out. The new procedure will mean parents/caregivers having to make their own way to appointments and then return their c hildren to sc hool. The General Election … … is less than six months away – enough time to become informed on some of the issues facing the education sector. Early Childhood Ta sk forc e The Early Childhood Taskforce was set up by the government to advise on value for money in early childhood education. The task force’s report is at odds with curre nt gov ernment a ctio ns. Whil e the government continues to argue that early childho od s pendin g is unaffordable, the report clearly states that early childhood education must be considered a priority even in times of fiscal c onstrain t. The report also recognises how essential quality early childhood education is and recommends improvements to teacher qualifications, group sizes and ratios; something upon which government has moved in the opposite direction. In the past year funding has been cut to more than 2,000 services, the target for having 100% qualified teac h ers has been abandon ed, profess i onal development for early childhood teachers has been cut, support for teachers in training and new graduates has been reduced and group sizes have been radically increased. We playedEnner Glynn Bullets and won 26 to 6.The Celtics werecalling each other, passing well, shooting baskets andrebounding exceptionally well. The whole teamdeserves player of the day but Gyung shone with hisblocking, rebounding and passing. Well done Gyung!!

Inter School Cross Country
Last week a team of 49 year 5 and 6 students attendedthe Inter School Cross Country Championships held atBranford Park. Schools attending were Hira, AucklandPoint, Hampden Street, Clifton Terrace, Victory and St
Josephs. Conditions were extremely heavy underfootafter the recent heavy rain. Teams raced over achallenging 1.5km course through different terrain. David won all his three games ( singles,doubles, mixed doubles).
Thomas won 2 singles games and doubles.The Nelson team performed extremely wellbeating Marlborough 18 matches to 14.
