Compare how the theme of identity is presented in ‘Half-caste’ and ‘No Problem’ Throughout the poems ‘Half-caste’ and ‘No Problem’ the theme of identity is effectively showcased through the poets’ experiences with racial prejudice and how society has shaped their identity. The poets’ identity is expressed through the poetic forms of these poems. ‘No Problem’ by Benjamin Zephaniah is a dramatic monologue with a strict A-B-C-B rhyme scheme. For example, ‘problem...taunts...brunts...stunts’ is an example of where how the rhyme scheme helps to create a consistent rhythm, relating to the oral form of dub poetry. Dub poetry originated from Jamaica, showing Zephaniah’s use of incorporating his Jamaican background into his poetry. The audience is constantly being reminded that
he is ‘not de problem’ through the rhythm created, allowing the audience to reflect on their preconceived ideas from his race. Similarly, Agard uses a dramatic monologue to address his experience with being called ‘half-caste’. However, his identity is also shown through the poem as it is split in half, representing how he is biracial but also how people see him as ‘half’ a human being as he is ‘half-caste’. The derogatory term ‘half-caste’ was used to refer to those with a mixed background, with the root of the noun ‘caste’ meaning pure. Agard was often called ‘half-caste’, being treated with ‘half’ of the respect he deserves due to his identity. By using the idea that he is ‘half-caste human being’ with ‘half-a-hand’ it implies how immature society is by treating him in this manner, however it also may refer to how many biracial people feel like they are half a person as they do not conform to a single race. Agard successfully communicates his message to all readers, allowing some readers to relate to the experiences of being mixed, but also allowing others to reflect on their attitudes towards biracial people. Therefore, the theme of identity is seen through the unique forms of these poems which mirror the poets’ backgrounds. The theme of identity is showcased through the poets’ anger of being treated in a prejudiced manner. Half-caste employs a refrain which demonstrates Agard’s resentment behind the offensive term ‘half-caste’. The direct address used in ‘Explain yuself’ bluntly addresses the reader, confronting the issue of racism directly. As it is constantly repeated throughout the poem, it creates an argumentative tone, questioning why people use the offensive term. There’s a sense of irony here as Agard understands that people call him ‘half-caste’ because he is biracial, but he

challenges them to why they choose to use a derogatory term instead of being respectful. This voices those who have gone through the same experience as Agard, but it also allows the reader to question themselves and why they use ‘half-caste’. This is somewhat mirrored in ‘No Problem’ where Zephaniah utilises the refrain of ‘I am not de problem’, but instead of having a questioning undertone like Half-caste, it appears to be in protest of the prejudice he has received. The adverb ‘not’ opposes the racial stereotypes, speaking against the racism and unfairness of society’s treatment towards black people. The repetition comparably links to the refrain in Half-caste, where it creates an argumentative tone, but one could argue that repeating it elucidates tones of distress and pain from being seen as a ‘problem’ in an injustice system. The audience can clearly understand and feel the anguish not only the poet went through, but also people of colour and the detrimental toll they experience from being in a narrow-minded society. By speaking out against racism, both poets illustrate the multitude of emotions, from anger to suffering, that their identity and racial stereotypes cause them. Identity is also explored through the ideas and stereotypes produced by their race. In Half-caste, Agard interestingly compares biracial people to how ‘picasso mix red and green is a half-caste canvas’. The nouns ‘red and green’ may refer to Guyana’s flag colours, linking to Agard’s background. Alternatively, the juxtaposition between the two colours also reflect how he is a part of two contrasting cultures, but they are still ‘mixed’ at the same time as they both contribute to his identity, creating a ‘half-caste canvas’. The reader is surprised at how ‘half-caste’ is being used as Agard seems to undermine the term by applying
it to art. As well as this, Agard’s biracial readers are able to relate to this experience rather than feeling like an outcast in society as they are seen as a ‘half-caste canvas’ rather than the offensive term ‘half-caste’. On the other hand, ‘No Problem’ discusses the limiting racial stereotypes society places. This is directly addressed when he states ‘yu put me in a pigeon hole/ But I am versatile’ to show how restricting stereotypes can be. Zephaniah similarly uses juxtaposition between the noun ‘pigeonhole’ which refers to being categorised and constricted, and the adjective ‘versatile’ which denotes to being all-round and flexible, to break out of the stereotype, in parallel to how Agard uses juxtaposition to break out of the term ‘half-caste’. Zephaniah subverts the stereotypes rather than complying to them, demonstrating to his audience that they do not have to confine to society’s expectations, and instead, break out of these expectations instead, leaving the audience with hope. Identity is presented through changing society’s perspective of their identity and standards. The theme of identity is showcased through stereotypes, experiences of racial prejudice, and the poet’s incorporation of their backgrounds. Agard effectively portrays his anger behind the derogatory term half-caste through criticising those who use the term, but also through undermining the offensive meaning behind it through applying it to common scenarios to almost ridicule the term. Zephaniah similarly expresses his anger, but also breaks stereotypes to show that identity should not be conformed to a limiting expectation.
