Dear Parents, From time to time we experience problems with our relatively ‘open access’ site. Whilst we are proud of the green space and the ability to share this with the community, it does pose security problems. Recently we have been encountering instances of anti social behaviour in the evenings. People are coming up in cars, acting irresponsibly and leaving lots of litter and rubbish. Therefore we will be installing further CCTV cameras and also increasing the lighting on site to deter unwanted visitors. In addition we are working closely with the local police so that we can maintain the benefits of our special campus. Simon Balle welcomes its first reception aged children. I do hope that you are following progress on our weekly blog from the ‘Larch Centre’. We are currently recruiting for non-teaching specialists and a receptionist.

Fun Run Just a quick reminder about the Fun Run this week—let’s hope the sun shines, as everyone is expected to take part. This is the schools main fund raising event of the year and our goal is to raise over £6000, which is absolutely possible with over 655 students and staff taking part. If you are looking to ‘give’ in an additional way, please see the request from our new Primary Phase leader, Ruth Oakenfull. We are asking for good quality learning resources, toys or a donation to purchase a story book for the Primary library!

Obviously at this time of year we are aware of staffing changes from September. We are still recruiting (as I have documented previously, this is the most difficult year to date!) but we do know of certain changes, due to maternity arrangements. Mayor Making It was once again a great privilege to represent the students and families of Simon Balle at the annual Hertford mayor making ceremony, which was held slightly later in May this year because of the national election. Having represented the community for over 17 years it feels that we too at Simon Balle are recognised for the part we play in make this town Hertford a special place. As I walked into the formality of the debating chamber at County Hall, I was welcomed by the fantastic sounds of our own chamber quartet and greeted by many ex parents, ex students and friends of our school. As one could expect, the event is a sombre and formal occasion with reports from the outgoing mayor (after referring to our own concerts) and then a looking forward by the new mayor, in this case Councillor Dr Linda Radford. The reception afterwards is no less joyous and a great opportunity to celebrate this town and the very close community to which we all belong. The Simon Balle community therefore sends Linda our new mayor, the town council, our very best wishes and the opportunity to make Hertford a safe, caring town.

Humanities/Science Trip Reminders

The history and geography departments are running cross curricular trips in conjunction with the science

department which will both take place on Thursday 2nd July.

Primary Phase Update It’s all systems go in the Larch Centre this week. The curriculum is being planned and more furniture has been ordered. I am in the process of finding suitable resources for filling the furniture and I hope you can help! Do you have a loft full of toys that you’ve been meaning to clear out? If yes then you might be able to help us. We are looking for a range of toys and games in EXCELLENT CONDITION. Items such as Lego, Playmobil, Duplo, complete puzzles, books, constructions toys, plastic animals—zoo animals, farm animals, dinosaurs etc. Train sets and trains as well as cars and a car garage would also be appreciated. In fact the list is endless and if you have anything that you think would be useful to a four year old, please let me know. Please can you bring any toys you are happy to donate into the school office before the end of June. —Thank You!

Flo Fyfe—Football Success We are very proud of Flo Fyfe Year 12 who was part of the Arsenal U17s who beat Aston Villa 2-1 to win the FA Cup the other weekend. This is a fantastic achievement and Flo has already represented her country and has also trained with the Arsenal 1st Team. We look forward to seeing Flo progressing her career over the coming years and hopefully representing her country in future World Cups!

HOUSE RESULTS FOR 2014/15 We are pleased to announce that the house with the most points this academic year and therefore the winners are ASHBOURNE. The reward for this is a trip to Thorpe Park on Tuesday 21 July for students who have made a positive contribution to their house. Any house points now awarded will count towards next year's total, so students should continue to strive to receive as many points as possible before the end of term. Although Ashbourne have been crowned winners, it is important to note that there have been many successes celebrated across the school in this first year of the new house and reward systems. To name but a few these include house events, the leadership of the Student Senior Leadership Team (SSLT), House Captains, work in the community, work within lessons from a range of subject areas, and extracurricular clubs/trips/events. We would therefore like to thank all students and staff for embracing the new house and reward systems. Year 13 Leavers’ Ball Prior to starting their final A2 exams the Year 13 gathered at The Manor of Groves Hotel for their Leavers’ Ball. The warm summer weather and wonderful setting of the hotel and grounds provided a beautiful backdrop for this memorable event. The girls looked resplendent in their ball gowns and the boys matched them in their formal evening wear. Many staff joined them for this farewell evening and all enjoyed the fine food and sense of community. The event was a huge success with the students presenting a series of well-received awards based on their years at Simon Balle while enjoying the marvellous cakes kindly donated, baked and beautifully presented by Sue Doyle one of our year 13 parents. Following the meal the students were able to demonstrate their varying degrees of talent as they attempted to ‘look good on the dancefloor’. Many thanks to Sam Stingemore and Julie Calder for their hard work in making this event such a success and also to all the Year 13 students for their input. It has been a pleasure working with this cohort of students - they are clearly passionate about their ‘sense of belonging’ to the school and in their gratitude for the support they have received from their teachers. On behalf of the school we wish them every success in their final exams and for a happy and successful future.

Year 10 Art Trip to The National Art Gallery On Tuesday 9th June the two GCSE art classes went to the National Art Gallery in London. After an event-ful journey with a quick coach swap at the beginning, we finally arrived at the gallery at 11:30. When we arrived we split into our classes and were given a guided tour of the gallery. 10D looked at ‘Surprised!’ by Henry Rousseau, ‘The Large Dort’ by Aelbert Cuyp and ‘Water Lilies’ by Claude Monet. Our tour guide helped us understand the context and inspiration and helped us think about the deeper meaning behind the three paintings. After a short lunch break, we ex-plored the gallery in small groups taking pictures of paintings that we liked and filling in our small booklets that we had been given. Everyone (students and teachers) enjoyed the day and were inspired by the art works they had seen. Students are now looking at ways to incorporate the skills they saw in the paintings at the National Art Gallery in their own work. We would like to thank Mr Trueman, Mrs Freeth and Ms Osterburg for taking us out to the gallery.

Year 8 Visit The Globe Theatre To start the day, we lined up outside reception in our form groups and were allocated to our coaches. The journey to the globe lasted around 1 ½ hours. Having enjoyed the view of the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, we then walked to the Globe and sat outside near the River Thames and ate our lunches. After that, we went to the souvenir shop one group at a time and looked around to see if we wanted to buy anything.

Before we went into the theatre itself, we were told some of the history about the Globe, including how it burned down during a performance when a cannon set fire to the straw roof. When we walked inside, everybody was overwhelmed and excited to learn more about the Globe Theatre and Shakespeare. Before we knew it, we were whisked off to a drama studio for a workshop on ‘Romeo and Juliet’. This was a fun trip for us and our drama skills have definitely improved. Overall, it was a great day and we widened our knowledge of the Globe Theatre and its history.

Golf opportunity for Simon Balle Students Brickendon Grange – Student’s membership We have been fortunate enough to have obtained a Golf deal at Brickendon Grange for our students. New Junior members pay only £20 for one year’s membership (usually £165). The club has a good record for developing junior players and has excellent practice facilities to support improvement. All junior membership are dealt with by PGA Pro Andy Clapp who is contactable on andy@bggc.org.uk or 01992 511218. He is also able to help with any children who might want to learn to play golf and then hopefully go on to become members on the deal.

Science News

On Thursday 4th June a group of Y7 students attended a seminar aimed at Inspiring Girls In Science held at

St Josephs in the Park. The seminar was for over 100 year 6 girls from many of the local primary schools.

At the event were a number of inspirational female scientists including a civil engineer, aeronautical engineer,

bioengineer and pharmaceutical chemist. The scientists spoke about their jobs to the girls and how they

achieved their ambitions. This was then followed by the students visiting a carousel of workshops. One of these was run by our Y7 girls who, with the help of 2 young female undergraduates studying science subjects, supported the Y6 girls in making the tallest tower using spaghetti, straws and jelly babies. The event was highly successful and hopefully may be the first of many such future events.

Brain Bee 15 budding neuroscientists from year 10 are travelling to UCL for the English Regional Brain Bee Challenge on Friday 12th June. This event was established in 1998 as a live question-and-answer neuroscience competition, designed to educate students about our most powerful computing machine – the human brain. At this moment, there are nearly 150 local Brain Bees across the world in over 25 countries. Students are asked to prepare for this challenge by reading and learning from a 60 page document about neuroscience . The level of information in this document contains information that is extremely complex, often of

degree level detail. This event is hosted by University College London and sponsored by the British Neuroscience Association. We wish them luck and will let you know how they do.

GSK Work Experience The following Year 10 students have successfully been offered a work experience placement at GSK Ware dur-ing July. This is an excellent opportunity for our students to gain an insight into the working life of scientists at GSK.

Book Reviews from Staff and Students Here are a few ideas of books that parents may enjoy reading alongside their children. All books mentioned are

available to loan from our school library. Esio Trot by Roald Dahl Esio Trot involves tortoises and a man who fancies the lady downstairs. The lady downstairs has a tortoise and she wants it to grow. So the man upstairs comes up with a plan and gives the lady a poem which helps, or does it? Find out more by reading it! It has a good story line that will show you the world of the man upstairs and the lady downstairs. It is by one of the most well known and best writers of all time - Roald Dahl. Give it a go! BL4.4 (Lucia Devonshire-Helps 7L) Listen to the Moon by Michael Morpurgo

Listen to the Moon is a really great Morpurgo book and is full of action, sadness and love. I would recommend this book for people who like other Michael Morpurgo books as the writing style is just the same with all of the wonderful detail. After or before read-ing this book I would recommend Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo. BL5.9 (Oscar Collins 7B)

The Time Riders: Day of the Predator by Alex Scarrow The book ‘The Time Riders: Day of the Predator’ is a very intense and adventurous read. I

enjoyed this book because it had lots of interesting vocabulary and it was a never-ending,

great battle for survival. If you are into fantasy, adventure, action and science fiction, then this

book is the right choice for you. But do not forget that this is the second book of the series so

you are going to need to read the first one ‘The Time Riders’ BL5.6 (Albert Rachi 7L)

The Maze Runner by James Dashner The reader can expect to read a book with action, tension, excitement and lots more- it's a book which makes you feel different emotions for so much happens. BL5.3 (Anna Beaven 8R) 1984 by George Orwell

A fascinating work of advanced literature with hints of historical facts from 1945 (the time when the book was written). Also included in the book is a romance between the main character (Winston Smith) and his lover (Julia). The reader will have to expect mysteries, plot twists, betrayal and romance. And finally, the reader has to expect a lot of secrecy in the plot and between all the characters in the story. BL8.9 (Matteo Tontodonati 9A)

Cuckoo Song by Frances Hardinge This is a superbly crafted story that twists your imagination like a contortionist and takes you on a dark, chilling ride over the snowy roof tops to meet the Besiders. What if you discovered you weren’t the real you, but a very good copy? Where is the real you and would you save her, even if you didn’t know what would then happen to the fake you? A story of magical menace and human emotions that I could relate to. Read it! BL6 (Mrs N Gjoka-Gibberd) Y7+

Apple and Rain by Sarah Crossan This book is written rather like a Jacqueline Wilson novel with a main character in

challenging family circumstances. Another Carnegie shortlist book with a grandparent as a

key figure in this emotional read. It is debatable whether it is as ‘realistic’ as the blurb claims.

A fairly new author in the book world who writes in a variety of genres. BL 3.8 (Mrs S. Pear-

Music News We will soon be saying goodbye to our Year 13 musicians although you will see below that there are still plenty or performance opportunities coming up this term. However this is also a time to plan for the future and this week we have had fifteen Year 7 and 8 students who have started learning the clarinet, flute or saxophone with Mrs Taylor. They are learning in groups so they can see how great the instruments are, and we hope that they will continue learning after the initial lessons. We will keep you posted with their progress along with a group who will shortly be starting brass lessons with Mr Nunn. Any other students who are interested in learning an instrument in September should speak to the music office. Tickets are now available for our Summer Concert on 7th July – see poster below. We also have our Rock School gig on Thursday 9th July. PE NEWS

Sports Leaders Since January the whole Year 10 cohort have been following a sports leadership course in their 2 PE lessons.

The course included, organisation of groups, communication, health and safety, warm up activities, relay

activities and creating original games and enforcing rules. During lessons they practised this on each other

and then in groups of 4 had to create a lesson aimed at primary children in years 3-6.

In April and May all groups visited either Morgans, Abel Smith, Hertford Heath, St Josephs or Hertingfordbury

primary schools to deliver their session. These were hugely popular sessions enjoyed by both Simon Balle and

primary students. Our leaders were fantastic and a higher than normal amount of distinctions have been

awarded. These will be given to the students in assembly soon.

County Athletics League

Simon Balle had another tough round on Monday against Verulam, Hitchen, Edwinstree, Freman College and Highfield schools. The positions going into Round 5 U14 Boys – 4th – 227pts (4pts off 2nd) U14 Girls – 9th – 153pts (3pts off 6th) U16 Boys – 6th – 195.5pts U16 Girls – 7th – 191pts A top 8 finish will guarantee a final place in the plate final and a top 4 finish will guarantee a place in the cup final. Performances of the day came in the following age-groups; U14 Boys: Jean Nwahba threw a personal best of over 12m to win the Shot Putt and complete 5/5 wins so far. His brother Albert won a closely contested 200m race as well. U16 Boys: Alex Washbourne and Jacob Fenwick had excellent races over the 100m & 1500m respectively. Morgan Swift finished 2nd in the Javelin and displaying great team spirit ran the 200m. U14 Girls: Fine performances from Trixie Wraith in the 1500m and Julianna Glinkowska in the 200m. Louise Reily—double medallist—300 hurdles and high jump On Saturday a squad of Simon Balle School’s elite athletes competed in the Hertfordshire Athletics Championships at Hemel Hempstead. The performance of the day came from Louise Reily who won the 300H as well as finishing 3

rd in the

High jump. Morgan Swift (Year 9) threw a pb of over 36.07m to finish second in the Javelin, an excellent performance. Jean and Albert Nwahba were competing in the Year 8/9 competition and performed very well. Jean finished 5

th in the Shot Putt &

8th in the 300m, whilst Albert won bronze in the Discus and was a finalist in the 200m. George Jones jumped over 4.50m in

the Long Jump, whilst his sister Lily was just 8cm off 4th in the Triple Jump and will be eligible for this age-group next year.

in the Pole vault. Eleanor Bayford (Year 8) finished an excellent 6

th in the Shot Putt.

The Year 7 girls in their first County championships competed with distinction. Trixie Wraith won bronze in the 800m, Elsa Barnfather ran well to finish 6

final, Niamh Hartnett & Julianna Glinkowska finished 6th and 5th in the Long Jump as well as competing in the 100m & 200m

respectively. Well done to all athletes and we now look forward to the upcoming District Championships on Friday 26th June.

Cricket News Y9 Cricket The Y9 Boys beat Richard Hale in the 3rd Round County Cup Cricket by 29 runs. This was simply an outstanding achievement. The last two years they have bowled us out for below 50. SBS scored 120-4 off 20 overs Max Lawrence 52 Not out and Sam Jones 40. In the field it was an intelligent and tactical master class from captain Max Lawrence. It was a superb team performance with everyone contributing. The boy’s face St Georges in the 1/4 final on Tuesday 16th June. In the District Cup the boys beat Chauncy afte chasing down 133 and scoring 138-2 with 4 overs to spare. Y8 Cricket The Y8 Boys played John Warner in their first game of the season last week. The boys were first to bat, however only scored 89-9, John Warner then won with 8 wickets to spare. The boys now play Broxbourne in their final District match, having received the match from St. Mary’s School.

Year 7 Cricket SBS vs Beechwood - County Cup

The Year 7 Cricket Team recently played Beechwood School in the County Cup. There was some excellent bowling on display as Simon Balle bowled first. Alex Bartlam and Aiden Read collected wickets as Beechwood set a target of 101. Matt Bartlam had an excellent innings of 31 for Simon Balle who pushed hard and batted out the 20 overs falling 6 runs short in the end. The lesson learned was to ensure that wides are minimised in the next game. SBS vs Turnford - District Cup On Monday 8th June, the team started their District Cup campaign with a resounding win over Turnford. Freddie Welch and Owen Hedge starred with the ball - Owen taking 4 wickets in a maiden over! Euan Begg hit the winning runs getting SBS off to the best possible start in this cup competition. They will now take on Leventhorpe and Richard Hale over the coming weeks to see who makes it into the semi-finals.

Yr7 Boys Calypso Cricket Champions! On Wednesday, Year 7 & 8 teams went to Sele School for the Calypso Cricket tournament. Year 7 - The Year 7 team were in scintillating form all day. Matt Bartlam retired from each of his innings in the group stage and final by scoring 25 runs in each game and was our man of the tournament. In the semi-final they had to chase down 53 and won the game on the very last ball with Aiden Read scoring the winning runs. In the final, they were put in to bat first and posted an impressive target of 55 which John Warner could not reach. This made Simon Balle the Calypso Cricket Cup Champions 2015. Well done to all the boys who played.

Year 8 - The Year 8 team got themselves into the Shield Final and managed to chase down a target set by Chauncy to win! Finlay Cattermole excelled with bat and ball and was the man of the tournament. Well done to the boys who recovered from a slow start to pick up some silverware. Year 9 – The Year 9 team powered through the group stage winning all of their games, helped by lots of boundaries from Sam Jones and Max Lawrance. Aeron Phipps and James Rollins chipped in well with the bat too but in the semi-final the bowling attack couldn’t quite contain Broxbourne who posted a high target which the boys could not reach. In the 3rd/4th place playoff

the team worked brilliantly together to ease to victory and claim a more than respectable 3rd in the tournament.

Year 10 – The Year 10 side started off in excellent fashion finding lots of boundaries while beating, Sele, Chauncy and Richard Hale before losing to John Warner. There was impressive wicket-keeping on display from Alex W and many runs scored by Dan H and Rees C. This allowed them to progress to the Cup semi-final where they met eventual winners Freman College who were too strong. In the 3rd/4th place playoff Simon Balle faced John Warner again and due to some excellent work in the field they managed to take enough wickets to win and take 3rd place overall in the tournament. Girls Calypso Cricket Champions! Congratulations to the Y7/8 girls who won the District Calypso Cricket Tournament on Tuesday beating Broxbourne in the final. The Y9/10 team also performed very well also reaching the final losing by only 2 runs

Hertfordshire Girls Super 8 Cricket Competition

This week the Y9 and Y10 girl’s cricket team completed at the district Calypso cricket competition at Sele School. The girls were runners up at the competition missing out by 2 runs in the final. They then played in the county Super 8 Cricket Competition on Wednesday over at Bishops Stortford Cricket Club. The girls won their pool group winning all matches against John Warner, Onslow St Audreys and Herts and Essex. The girls then went on to beat Queenswood in the semi-final and the girls then met Herts and Essex again in the final. The girls improved with each game and were brilliant in field and in bat. Player of the match went to Emma with some excellent bowling coming in for the last over and some great catches in the field. The girls now go on to represent Hertfordshire on 8th July at Springfield cricket club in Essex.

The Y7 and Y8 team went to the County Super 8 competition on Thursday. The girls were excellent and played brilliantly winning their semi final to make it into the final against Herts and Essex. The girls put up a good fight against a very good team but lost in the final. The girls were runners up in county which is a great achievement.

Rounders Y10s beat Sheredes 20 and a half to 8 and a half, getting them all out in 5 minutes for half a rounder in the 1st innings. Y9’s had their tournament they had a close match against John Warner but won against St Marys. Unfortunately an excellent performance from Presdales meant that the girls just missed out on progressing further.

11th June 2015 SBS GOLF DAY 2015- Panshanger Golf Club - Sponsored by the SBS PSA Dear Parents/Carers & Students, I would like to invite you to the fifth annual Simon Balle Golf Open on Wednesday 15th July, at Panshanger Golf Club. . Last year we had 40 students, parents and staff playing in the competition and it was a huge success. This will again be another opportunity to get together as a school community. The tournament will be split into two categories, a Student’s Stableford competition and a Parents & Teachers Stableford competition. In addition, there will be a longest drive and closest to the pin competition for both categories. There will be one parent or teacher partnered with three students for each fourball. We will be playing 18 holes. It is advisable that you have played golf on an 18 hole course before. The competition will run from 2.00pm. The price for students will be £15.00 and £20.00 for adults. This includes green fees and prizes. Any monies raised from this event will go to the SBS PSA and their project of providing the school with new minibuses. If you would like to take part in the SBS Golf Day please complete the reply slip below and attach a cheque made payable to Simon Balle School or cash and return to the Finance office by Monday 6th July 2015. Final details will be sent out with tee off times and tournament information nearer the time.
