The River of Learning Program has been running at Maclean High School for 9 years and has been so successful that in 2015 the school was awarded the prestigious state wide Nanga Mai award for acknowledgment of Yaegl history and culture.

This year, for the first time, Uncle Ron Heron conducted a smoking ceremony in the school assembly area in front of the whole school. The school community values its close parnership with the Yaegl Elders and looks forward to many more wonderful River of Learning Clebration days.

Year 8 Viking Class! Year 8B recently took a Scandinavian excursion back in time, re-creating Viking weapons, houses and longships.

They made fierce warriors, and enjoyed getting into the Viking Spirit. Well done 8B!

Open Netball Zone Finalists The Girls Open Netball team played in the first 3 rounds of the CHS knockout at Goonellabah Sports and Aquatic Centre on Thursday 24th May. A forfeit from Casino in the first round meant we were fresh for a spectacular win over The Rivers College 47-14.

Next we were up against Alstonville in the Northern Rivers Zone Final. A good start kept us close in the first part of the game but, with a couple of injuries and an obvious height descrepancy across the entire court, the Maclean girls went down fighting.

Thanks to all team members and carers for your efforts and support.

QUILT RAFFLE The Maclean Patchwork & Quilters have done it again, by creating a stunning contemporary raffle quilt which will be drawn at this year’s Clarence River Arts festival. The Festival will take place at Maclean High School over the weekend of 13th to 15th July. Named ‘Tranquil-ity’ the quilt is a large queen size and the $2.00 tickets are on sale at Ferry Park Gallery, Maclean. It will be displayed in Grafton and Yamba before the festival so watch out for it and grab a ticket or two.

Have you got your Patchwork & Quilting entry forms yet? You can download the form, as well as the other sections, from www.clarenceriverartsfestival.com.au or pick them up from Ferry Park Gallery.

Year 9 CommerceShark TankYear 9 Commerce recently took part in a Shark Tank task, where students were required to work collaboratively to come up with a product concept for a new or improved item, and then ‘sell’ it to a panel of judges. Students came up with some fabulous product concepts, and the panel was impressed with their creativity and business acumen. Well done Year 9 Commerce!

Careers Update White Card Training

Working in events, on construction sites, at music festivals or in sale yards all require you to have a White Card. Our most recent White Card course offered students in Years 10 - 12 an opportunity to gain this highly sought after qualification, in turn, opening up not only opportunities for part time work but also apprenticeships and work experience.

Careers Classes The Basics! Tax File Numbers, Unique Student Identifiers, Resumes! Years 9 and 10 have started collating their basic ‘I need these to adult’ documents. In the coming weeks students will rock up at home with completed TFN forms to take to the post office and maybe a request for their medicare details so they can get a USI. If you have any questions contact Miss Fisher in Careers.

Australian Defence Force Gap years, rugby, beep tests and work experience were hot topics during a recent visit from the Australian Defence Force. Those attending the seminar were given an insight into not only life in the armed forces but also entry pathways and preparation tips. We currently have several students at Maclean High School who are part way through their application process and have already undertaken interviews on the Gold Coast and we’re excited to see where this career pathway takes each of them in the future.
