Tangerang Visit, April 3-7 Once again, Narrandera High School had the opportunity during the last week of Term 1, to host a group of students

and staff from SMAN 1 and 2, Tangerang. This was the third time our school had been involved in a cultural and

language based exchange with SMAN1and 2, and again it was a very enjoyable and successful experience for both

schools concerned. They had travelled from Jakarta on the Saturday evening, and then from Sydney via train and

bus to Narrandera. Several school staff and families were there to welcome them to Narrandera. The group were

transferred back to school where they were introduced to their host families, joined in afternoon tea and then accom-

panied their host families home.

Over the next four days, the Indonesian and Narrandera High School students were involved in a variety of activities

which were aimed at educating our visitors about Australian culture and our school system. On Tuesday they visited

Altina wildlife Park and enjoyed a game of 10 Pin Bowling in Griffith. Wednesday they learned about indigenous cul-

ture with a visit to Michael Lyons as well as attended a sports session learning some of the skills of AFL and netball.

Miss. Hopping also presented an excellent English lesson. Thursday started with a cooking class making laming-

tons, followed by a tour on the common. All students attended normal classes after lunch. A farewell dinner was held

to celebrate the friendship developed between our schools and also our countries. On Friday morning, the Indone-

sian students were able to enjoy some of the Athletics Carnival before their departure back to Sydney and then on to

Jakarta the following Tuesday.

This opportunity for all the students involved, was only made possible by the generous hospitality of our school com-

munity. I would like to thank, in particular, all the families who hosted the Indonesian students, the staff who willingly

offered their assistance and allowed the visitors into their classes, Mrs. McLay, Mrs. Morsanuto and Stage 6 Hospi-

tality students who provided the farewell dinner, Jack Langley, Renae Galvin and Isabella Beaumont who entertained

our visitors Thursday evening, and finally the students who acted as ‘buddies’ during the school day.

TENNIS GALA DAY—TEMORA

On Monday the 27th March Noah Watson,

Brooklyn Hands, Clayton James and Riley Bu-

chanan went to Temora to play tennis. Our

first round was against Murrumburrah in dou-

bles. We played 3 doubles matches and 4 sin-

gles matches. There scores in the first round

of doubles were Brooklyn/Clayton 1-6 and No-

ah/Riley 6-3. The singles matches were Noah 6

-7 Riley 3-6 Brooklyn 3-6 and Clayton 6-7. The

second round of doubles was Noah/Riley 5-5.

It was unfortunate that the game was cut

short because of time. Unfortunately we did

not make it into the 2nd round even though a

lot of the games were very close.

YEAR 9 & 10 HSIE CANBERRA

EXCURSION

From the 27th March until 29th March 2017, Year 9 & 10 went on its bi-annual excursion to Canberra as a part of

their Australian History, Geography, Commerce and Civics & Citizenship course.

We set off bright and early Monday morning at 5.45am, and after a brief stop at Gundagai we arrived at Govern-

ment House for our first visit. The students were treated to a tour of the beautiful house and one lucky student

got the opportunity to sit in the chair that Sir John Kerr was sitting in when he signed for the dismissal of Prime

Minister Gough Whitlam.

Our next visit was to the new Questacon which is situated in the old Australian Mint building and the programs are target-ed towards secondary students. The students were divided into groups and assigned a table where they were given a task to complete such as “feed the dog” . The groups worked well together and it was great to see their problem solving skills (and frustrations) at work. The exercise proved challenging and satisfying at the same time and only some

teams were successful in meeting the target.

Afterwards we visited the National Archives where stu-

dents were able to see the original Bill signed by Queen

Victoria on 9 July 1900 which allowed for the founding of

the Commonwealth of Australia and the enactment of the

Australian Constitution. Students also sat for the Dictation

Test that was used during Australia’s era of the ‘White Aus-

tralia Policy’. Needless to say, not one student or teacher

passed!

After a long day we headed to our accommodation, show-

ered and changed, then went out to Putt Putt where the

students’ golfing skills (or lack thereof) were put to the

test!

On our second day, our visit included Parliament House,

where the students were lucky enough to see Labor leader

Bill Shorten out for his morning jog and had the opportuni-

ty to meet the Federal Member for Farrer, Sussan Ley. Ms

Ley was very welcoming and gave an interesting insight

into her life before politics. Visitors to Parliament House

still had access to the grass roof, so we took the opportuni-

ty to get some great photos of the students.
