HAMLETLate in Term 1, Year 12 English Advanced students and selected students from the Year 9-10 Drama class were fortunate enough to be able to see a performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet, at the Casula Powerhouse Theatre in Sydney.

The performance was an unorthodox reinterpretation that still employed the Elizabethan English language of the time. The audience was seated on stools flanking the stage, with the stage set on the same level, allowing the actors to move amongst the audience members. This was a simple, yet engaging, way to stage the drama, causing the audience to physically move to follow the action.

The students seemed quite energised by the performance; the bus was alive with rich, meaningful chatter about various elements of the narrative, the performance and staging for at least an hour or so afterwards. And rightly so!All conducted themselves in the mature, respectful and responsible way that we know we can expect fromKandos High School students. As well, all of them sang beautifully on the bus. Kind of :)

YEAR 7 TECHNOLOGY MANDATORYYear 7 have been busy developing their skills including researching, designing, planning and preparing a dish based around the humble potato. The results were fantastic, and the Food Technology room smelt delicious. The students have been focusing on learning how good nutrition affects wellbeing, concentration and application to everyday health and tasks including school. These skills are essential to life and I encourage parents to allow their children to continue to develop their culinary skills at home. They may even surprise you with a great dish, however, the process is more important than the end-result! Keeping these skills active will help them become capable adults. Congratulations year 7 on your outstanding progress.

OPEN TOUCH

Kandos High School took open boys and open girls touch teams to Mudgee on Friday 4th May to compete in the regional knockout carnival.

Both teams came up against a tough Forbes team in the first round.

The boys were unfortunately beaten but the girls had a draw against Forbes, which pushed them into a drop off. Most of the girls had never played a drop off before, however, they rose to the challenge and beat Forbes in a nail biting drop off.

The girls then had to face Mudgee High, who had a much older and experienced team than Kandos. The Kandos girls were beaten by Mudgee, but played well and put pressure on Mudgee during parts of the game. The girls also lost their third game against Parkes High.

The boys had a disappointing loss in their second game, playing well but unable to finish off their tries.

All students displayed great sportsmanship and represented their school with pride.

STUDY SKILLS HANDBOOK NEWSLETTER ITEM FOR MAY

What do you do when you get a disappointing assignment mark?We all have times when we think we have done brilliantly then get an assignment back and are really disappointed instead. You could just feel really bad, or you could try these steps:

1. REVIEW AND UNDERSTANDThe first step is to work through the feedback and work out what went wrong.

- Did you not meet the criteria?- What feedback were you given from the teacher?- Do you understand the feedback?- Can you work out why you got the mark you did?

If you don’t understand why you got the mark you did, it is ESSENTIAL you ask your teacher for further clarification. Otherwise you will keep making the same mistakes.

2. CHALLENGE OR ACCEPTOnce you understand what the issue was, you can either accept it, or challenge it.ACCEPT: If you feel now that the mark was actually fair enough, then it is time to move on. There is no point beating yourself up anymore about your disappointing mark.Instead you need to treat this as a learning process, the people who are most successful in life don’t let their mistakes get them down, they see them as a learning opportunity where they can improve and make sure it doesn’t happen again. However, if you really think your mark was unfair and you had met all of the criteria, you can talk to your teacher and politely explain your point of view and ask if they would reconsider your mark.

3. LEARN AND CHANGEThe only way to improve, is to work out what you did wrong, then try and fix it.It is actually a really good idea to re-do part of the work and re-submit. Not everyone has the commitment to do this, but if you do - then wow - you will really see the benefit in your results. It might just be a case of re-doing a section of the assignment and asking your teacher to review it.But if you don’t have another go, you won’t know whether or not you have really taken the feedback on board. Some students let a bad mark get them down and start to think they are not capable of succeeding, so they don’t try to address the issue, make similar mistakes again and just feel worse. Don’t be that sort of person! Learn from what you have done and have another try.Another good thing you can do is to ask to see other students’ work who received top grades for their assignments - to evaluate what was missing in yours or how you could improve yours next time.It would also be a great idea for your next assignment to show your teacher a plan, or a draft early on, explaining how you think you’ve met the criteria, and seek feedback well BEFORE handing it in.
